that is the subject of this evening's talking points memo. writing in this coming sunday's "the washington post" former new york "times" editors howell reigns accuses fox news of sabotaging obama care and waging jihad against the obama administration. raines writes: >> bill: are you kidding me with this? is this a joke? standards of fairness at the "new york times" and other liberal media organizations? come on. right now liberal columnists at the "new york times" outnumber conservatives 10 to 1 throughout the newspaper. that sounds fair, doesn't it? mr. reigns himself is a committed left-wing guy who surrounded himself with like-minded people in his shorten you're as editor. it's a journalism that is hypocritical here. is he forced to resign his position at the "times" due to jayson blair scandal where found to be a majorrist. coverage of iraq. you may remember the "new york times" ran a series of articles saying saddam hussein did indeed have weapons of mass destruction and was dodging u.n. inspectors. largely because of that reportage the wmd scenario that president bush used to invade iraq was accepted by the mainstream media. i mean, if the liberal times was saying it, but now incredibly, howell raines is casting himself as the keeper of the journalistic flame. writing, quote: it is a matter of fox turning reality on its head with endless repetition of its uber lie, the american people do not want health care reform. unquote. oh yeah? well, who is the real liar, mr. raines? >> i believe that we do need health care reform in this country. i believe there are a lot of people who can't afford health insurance. and that the insurance companies, because i have to deal with them. i'm an employer. and i have ---i'm self-insured. it's a pain in the butt to deal with them sometimes they are trying to hose you. >> absolutely. >> bill: sending you all of this crap that they don't have to to wear you down. >> right. >> bill: i think most americans want health care reform. oh, now, the factor is a signature broadcast of the fox news channel and we have covered the obama-care debate carefully and with fairness, as have most of my colleagues. as far as raucous commentators are concerned the following fnc people support obama care alan colmes, juan susaneth atlantic. that's just a partial list. what's going on here? it's simple. howell raines is finished. the "new york times" is bleeding. the elite media in general has lost enormous power. in the meantime fox news continues to rise. there you go. that's the memo. now for the top story tonight we invited howl reigns on. he is hiding. i don't know if he has a disk. if he is, he is under it we are left, ladies and gentlemen, with bernie goldberg who joins us now from miami. >> come on. i think this is frustration and anger that health care reform may go down on the part of mr. raines who, to use his own phrase, is an uner, left wing guy. a zealot. but i do concede that there are people on this network who don't want obama care. i haven't heard anybody saying they don't want health care reform but they don't want obama care. what say you? >> well, i'm not sure, frankly, bill, that we should be taking howell raines seriously. here is a guy who is clearly, clearly a left-wing idealogue who is trying to portray himself as the conscious of american journalism. after he was unceremoniously canned at the "new york off. when matt drudge was just taking off, and he could have said, look, i know there are people out there who think we have a liberal bias. i'm going to make sure we don't in the future if we ever did. i know there are people out there who think that we don't share the values of half of this country that we treat liberals one way and conservatives in another way. and i'm going to make sure that doesn't happen. he could have done that. instead, he chose to take a hard left turn. and now to your point. i think that howell raines and my pal dan rather would like to put the genie back in the bottle. i think they want to go to a time before fox news. they want to go to a make believe mythical time when, in their crazy view, there were no biases, reporters were just reporters without agendas, but what they really want, bill, is they want to go back to a time where nobody challenged them and in howell raines case he wants to go back to a time when as the editor of the mighty "new york times" he could call all the shots. >> bill: that might be all subliminal that they want to do that. i think there is a more important thing in play here. the "the washington post" has given this guy raines on this coming stownd print this nonsense. it is nonsense. if raines was sitting here i could carve him up and he knows it. why? why is the "the washington post" doing it? why is raines doing it? what do they want to accomplish? raines wants to rally the mainstream media. almost like the battle of the bulge. the war is over. they lost. he wants to rally the remnants of the left-wing mainstream media to come after fox news and is using the health care debacle as a means to do that. that's why the story is important. and the "the washington post" is giving him the fuel. is fueling up his tanks. that's what the post is doing. >> right. yeah. well, listen, what he says in the post article is just the stuff that he says probably three times a week to his liberal pals at cocktail parties. the post, shame on the "the washington post." >> bill: shatter. shame on the "the washington post." >> shame on the "the washington post" for publishing -- this is why. for publishing an angry rant. are you ready for this? >> well, i think that first of all america will be the republic we adore and pledge allegiance to. america in the fundamental sense of what it means to be a democratic republic will not change. but the complex of the country and for the first time in human history will become darker. of that there is no doubt. there this is a demographic reality. >> bill: it has to play out in a political and social way. it has to play out in a political and social way. >> and economic way. >> bill: i don't know about economic because i still think that there is no difference among people, americans, in their drive to succeed. i don't think there is a difference. >> i agree with that particularly among latinos that i know best. but opening vast new markets for entrepreneurs in this country. look at russia. compare the united states with our first of all driven by immigration and now more recently by native births and the vast majority of hispanic babies for example are citizen-born now compare that to russia where they have had no influx no energetic population moving. in russia went from 148 million people during the height of the soviet union to 141 million. it's down 7 million people. the population is aging. our population, but for the new immigrants and the latino population is this bubbling up of these youngsters would be aging also. who would support social security, for example? as we. >> bill: there is no doubt that the minority groups are going to be a driver of the economy. i don't have any problem with that. let me throw some stats at you and see how this is going to play out. okay? crime. this is an amazing stat. 28% of those incarcerated are black. but, -- arrested, i should say, black. 69% are white. so whites dominate the arrest sheets far more than their population. you always hear the cops are picking on the african-americans. but whites are arrested way higher than african-americans. >> i think in those issues. >> bill: isn't that interesting? >> yes, of course it is. but in crime and punishment , i don't think the country will be meaningfully affected. the law says that rich and poor alike cannot steal bread or cannot -- >> bill: all right. what about births to unmarried women? this is a dismantled african-americans 70%. latinos 50%. whites 26%. now, that has to impact american society. it has to. >> as i wrote, i think that that aspect of our social society is devastatingly negative in its impact. the fact that half of latino children are born out of wedlock is a horrible, horrible thing. >> bill: but 70% for african-american. >> less educated. and i think that they are extolling a virtue that doesn't exist. >> bill: what's that? what virtue is that? >> that you can have it all. that you can have children. >> bill: and responsibility. >> entitlement programs. particularly if you are not married and there is no personal responsibility. >> bill: both you and i know that this is a devastating statistic. all right? it's devastating. >> how does it play out? here is the point that i think that you are missing with all due respect. when you have this -- these newcomers or this new groups that now become from minority to majority, they will mature, in time. they will become. >> bill: you think these stats will come down. >> they will come as traditional. for instance, latin american people latino people, hispanic people in this country inherently socially conservative. they go to church. they want their kids in the boy scouts. i think as the population matures goes down. i think if you will compare they similarly went through some of these antisocial behaviors. >> bill: that doesn't explain the african-american intrusion. >> that's an issue that we have to talk about role models and we have to listen to our president who extolls the virtue of family values. >> bill: to me, that is the game changer if anything. you you are a sage. we know that. >> we will come to the middle. i guarantee you. >> bill: if it doesn't, we are all going to live at your house. >> yes. >> bill: directly ahead, a follow-up report on tom hanks saying there is racism embedded in america's wars against jandz and radical islam. the wife of a powerful sentenced to jail on corruption charges. coming right back. this is onstar reporting a stolen blue chevy tahoe, south on i-75, near exit 5. we're on it. onstar, we may have that tahoe. ok, i'll flash the lights. we got it. it's in the cler. i'm sending a signal to cut the power. we got him. mr. ross, the police have recovered your tahoe. >> bill: factor follow-up segment tonight, as we have been reporting actor tom hanks has produced a miniseries about the theater in world war ii. some reason he has injected racial politics into the promotion for the film. >> the pacific is now coming out where it represents a war that was of racism and terror. and what it seemed as though the only way to complete one of these battles in these small specks of rock in the middle of nowhere was to, i'm sorry, kill them all. and does that sound familiar to what we might be going through today? so is there anything new under the sun? >> bill: it's hard for me to believe that mr. hanks thinks racism played a part in the japanese situation or the current war on terror. we have invited mr. hanks on the factor. he has declined. joining us now from mountain view california a teacher who teaches university of virginia. you had to kill them all in the japanese theater because they wouldn't surrender. the code was you don't surrender. you fight to the end. so you had to kill them all or you would be killed. surely a guy like tom hanks knows that so i don't know what he is getting at. i don't know what the point is. do you, professor? >> well, i think what mr. hanks might be doing is something we historians called presentism. that is looking at the past through the present. and it usually doesn't yield very clear thinking on either level. >> bill: presentism. >> presentism. >> bill: he is looking at the world war ii theater based upon what's happening today. even with what's happening today he is if a lacious. if a lacious. if anybody thinks that the war on terror is racist driven they are out of their minds, professor. we were attacked by the jihadist for no reason at all. zero reason. they killed 3,000 people on 9/11. we have replied to that it's not racism. if any group in the world had attacked us, we would be doing the same thing to them. white, yellow, red, it wouldn't matter. >> what mr. hanks' statement leaves out is a huge amount of context that the war in the pacific, like the war on terror unfolded in a agree owe political context and it happened after surprise attack, which really radically changed the way americans thought about war and their willingness to engage in war. >> bill: here is how bad it is, professor. we have a couple of million muslims in the united states. they haven't been, by and large, bothered. there hasn't been -- very few incidents, okay? but this is what upsets me about this whole thing. so you have got this guy hanks, who has some power. he has got power. he is on all programs. he won't come on the fox news channel, which in itself tells you something because this audience here is by far and away the largest audience and it would watch, this audience, his miniseries. they are interested the fox viewers in that. but he won't come here because i believe this guy is so left-wing driven now that he is just a loon. although i could be wrong. there might be something here that i don't understand about him, which is why i brought you on. now, presentism or whatever, i mean, there has got to be something driving. this go ahead. >> well, what i think is too bad is that he missed one of the most interesting parallels between the pacific experience and what's happening today which is after the pacific war, we embarked on our first attempt at successful attempt at nation-building. that's really what we are doing today in afghanistan and iraq and a 10-part series on nation building in japan, why it was successful. what we did right. that would be a real contribution to understanding some of the issues we're dealing with in the present day. >> bill: okay. i think this hbo miniseries is a contribution because it shows the heroism of americans and what they had to deal with in the pacific theater and they don't teach that in high schools. you know. >> that's right. >> bill: dopey kids coming into your classroom now in the university of virginia. i'm not denigrating and spielberg is involved with this miniseries, too. >> yes. >> bill: these are very, very talented men ohio think are doing a good thing with these presentations. but it's hanks himself that bothers me. because he has power. people listen to him. go. >> i would say that the parallel between the soldiers' experience in world war ii and what's happening now, i think that is important to draw out. and i think to the extent the series does that, it is making a real contribution. the other parallel here that i would point to is the element of the surprise attack. the analogy between 9/11 and between the attack on pearl harbor. so, both of these are really the instigating cause of the war, rather than the way hanks is describing it as some type of culture clash, and really leaving out the instigating effort or instigating incident that precipitated us joining the war. >> bill: do you believe there was an element of racism in our strategy to defeat the japanese? and/or our strategy to defeat the jihadists? do you believe there is an element of racism in this strategy? >> i think the driving factor is a bigger tactical considerations in the war. that is regaining the pacific and hemming in japan which was trying to expand imperial empire. in today's context, trying to eliminate safe havens for terrorism. i think that's the driving motivation. now, what happens on the ground, how it plays out, that's much harder to comment on, but i don't think it plays the kind of role that hanks is saying it does. >> bill: we appreciate it, professor, thanks very much. plenty more ahead as the factor moves along this evening. dan rather a bit upset over his obama watermelon analysis. we will take a look at that glenn beck on why he gave the loopy congressman massa so much time on his program. we hope you stay tuned to those >> bill: lt. colonel ralph peters has been listening to the debate. i want to get his debate on it he is the author of the brand new book "endless war." i highly recommend. i finished it today. so what do you think is behind this hanks thing? >> historical ill literacy. apart from his commendable interest in world war ii. tom hanks has no idea what he is talking about. and even -- bill, even the nonsense about our war on terror being racist, bill, al qaeda comes in every color in the rainbow. there are black, white, red, yellow, and brown al qaeda members. so, it's just absolutely silly. but back to this whole issue of hollywood liberalism, always seeing imputing horrible motives to the united states. we are always the bad guys. i would love to see mr. hanks and mr. spielberg make an honest film about the bataan death march. >> bill: to be fair to spielberg and hanks, this miniseries, by all the accounts and all the reviews is an homage to the american soldier. it is a tribute. so it's not anti--american. >> no, not at all. >> bill: it shows the bravery. young people need to see this by the way. as i said, they don't learn about it in school anymore. so i applaud hanks and spielberg for putting this stuff out. but what i don't get is why hanks wants to inject racism into two wars, japan and the war on terror where racism clearly does not exist. we had to kill the japanese, as you well know, because the japanese wouldn't surrender. period. they wouldn't put their arms in the air. and if they would kill you. and then the jihadists, if they were thys, burmese and they had attacksed you, we would be doing the same thing to them. you have got to kill them. they won't negotiate and they won't stop. what is it about that simple thing that tom hanks doesn't understand? >> well, i think there are several things. one, for these kind of people, the past is always somehow magically better and today it just stinks. it's just like that. i do believe mr. hanks and spielberg their interest in this is commendable and band of brothers was terrific. that's great. but then when you get to the idea that while today's soldiers are not as good or not the greatest generation or we are racist. it's just crazy. in fact, ironically, the really interesting contrast, rather than parallel between world war ii and the pacific and the battle against terrorists, islammist terrorists is that in the pacific we responded to savagery with ruthlessness of our own and we won. in the war against terror, we have responded with lawyers. and we are not doing so well. >> bill: that's an interesting point. let's get to your book "endless war" you are tough on the afghan theater. you don't believe we are waging the war properly. secretary gates was over there it looks like the marjah campaign has been successful. pakistan has stepped it up against the taliban in that country. you address all of these things in a very negative way in your book. i'm wondering if you see now that maybe the strategy we're employing will lead to some good both in afghanistan and pakistan? >> well, bill, the book takes you from jihadi victories in the middle ages to the turning of the tide to afghanistan. and i have never questioned whether or not our troops can accomplish their mission. there is no question the marines and the brits and our army guys in support could do marjah. that's not the issue. the issues are, one, what happens now? >> bill: no, i know that but the strategy -- seems to be optimism according to gates about the strategy. and pakistan. >> bill, there was optimism about vietnam in 1965 and 1966. >> bill: you are still down -- >> look, our military -- i don't want to leave afghanistan. i want to concentrate on killing our enemies. that's al qaeda. >> bill: but i don't want you to be a racist though? don't be a racist, colonel? >> i will kill al qaeda in any color they come in. >> bill: upset tom hanks if you keep talking like that. >> the developments in pakistan are encouraging. there is a reason it's happening. pakistan is now busting the al qaeda guys and taliban guys they can't manage because pakistan sees a deal coming. they know obama wants out. karzai is looking for advantages with iran, pakistan. we are going to see a grand bargain in the next couple years and we will be the ultimate guys on the outside. >> bill: colonel, thanks very much. the book again is endless war. when we come right back, glenn beck gave congressman massa a full hour to explain himself. does beck regret it? what? >> bill: do you think there was more importance to the story than an out-of-control guy? was there more there. >> what he was claiming over the weekend, yes. >> bill: that the obama administration was out to get him. >> not only out to get him and there was bribery and everything else. i said look, so then you have details on this? you have facts? absolutely i do. you are willing to expose those things? absolutely. i got nothing to lose. >> bill: the reason that i didn't -- and this is absolutely true. the reason i didn't have anybody call the guy and he told you that i didn't call him. >> yeah. >> bill: was because guys like that, troubled guys like that, i don't really want to have anything to do with them unless they have power over our lives. unless they are doing stuff -- >> that's what i said at the beginning of the show and at the end of the show. >> bill: you admitted to the folks this guy is a total waste of time. >> absolutely. i said they beginning of the show you have to ask him do you believe him on this subject? do you believe him on this subject. the next question you have to ask do either of these effect your lives? no. it does if he was talking about corruption and had evidence. >> bill: now, something that does effect people's lives, what they eat and the government increasingly wants to regulate what you eat and the beck meister is objecting to that roll the tape. >> i do not want the government controlling my diet. i like being able to decide whether to face myself with doritos and sit around the house and eat all day. it's my choice. there is a place in new york city. you have got to come to new york city and do the town with me because i know all the good stuff is they make double fried cherry pie. ummm. this is good. now, it's been banned. too many fats. you know, may i just say, this pie was made for you and me >> bill: you were arrested right after that for eating that pie. >> they took me away in calorie cuffs. >> bill: i'm going to play devil's advocate here. i want you to have all the twinkies and dingdongs that you want. >> you are a god among men. >> bill: say you do that you sit at home and eat your twinkies and dingdongs all day long. you don't have any money because you have been spending it on twinkies and dingdongs. you are 45 and have the heart attack. you have to go to the hospital and have a heart attack. you don't have to pay for it i have to. >> i have private insurance. >> bill: i'm talking about people who don't. his mind is on the cherry pie. >> i'm listening. don't mention cherry pie right now. >> bill: the guy doesn't have any money. >> yeah. >> bill: he eats himself into a heart attack. >> right. >> bill: they take him to the hospital. >> um-huh. >> bill: they will treat him. you will pay for it and i will pay for it. >> no. you are missing the part, no, you are missing the part. he can't afford health insurance. is he working?
