it has been an unbelievable sequence of events here. . that after the horrific massacres, now, there's another shooting, and we caution that the early numbers are often miss leading because the system -- misleading because this is an unfolding events. the gateway bldg, 17 stories tall, a fairly new building, lots of different businesses are housed there. that is completely surrounded. police are looking for the armed suspect believed to be quite dangerous, wearing a blue shirt and jeans. we do not know the color of the genes, but we can tell you this much -- two are dead, according to the "orlando sentinel." eight have been injured, but those numbers may change. it is unclear the extent to which the injured have been able to get out of the building, how many others may still be trapped inside, and the whereabouts of the gunmean. jeff it is unclear whether he is in the building or whether he was able to flee the area. martha: a report came across the wires that someone identify this person as someone who used to work in the building. those reports are unconfirmed. we have seen that kind of situation unfold in the past. we do not know of that is what we are looking at here. it may be something very different from that, but at this moment, police are searching all of the buildings, including gateway, and as gregg was pointing out, there are a number of businesses based in this building. this is an ongoing police situation in lockdown as they try to find the person who did this. you can just imagine what it is like in the surrounding area. lots of people at work, lots of people milling around, a lot of people heading out for lunch in the middle of the day. swat teams have been deployed and are acting in this orlando shooting as well. orlando, welcome. good afternoon to you. it is not a good afternoon for the folks of orlando. >> right, as you were saying, this manhunt continues. we do not know whether it is a suspect or suspects, but we do know that police have got a lot of work to do. this 16-story building is huge, about 229,000 square feet, and as you were saying, it is at the height of the date for a lot of these people. it is a friday. across the street from this large high wise -- high-rise is a starbucks as well, and we know there's a lot of people congregate around there. of those areas to get in out of downtown orlando, all congested. police working as many angles as they can't, but you cannot go in and try to find this person. there are multiple law- enforcement agencies that have already arrived. apparently, there have been ambulance bernie's that have been seen trying to approach the building, but apparently, it looks like they may have been stopped. police have to make sure that it is safe to go in because they do not know if it is a suspect or suspects. they start to the people up there to save these folks, try to find these victims. who knows what will happen at that point. we do know this much. we have reached out, as harris has done as well, to try to make contact with the people on the ground. law enforcement and public information officer is there in orlando all busy, all trying to get information. martha: just looking down here at some of what we have crossing wires, and there's a report coming up the bodies were found. we know there are two people confirmed dead at this point. bodies found on the eighth and 10th floor. anybody in the area listening to this i'm sure is very nervous about anybody they might know who work in that building. there are a number of different companies in these buildings, and i'm sure people are trying to reach out and make contact, but this is what is coming across right now -- the local media is reporting eight to 10 shots. >> they are reporting but is on the eighth and 10th floors. we are hearing as many as eight people shot. there have been agencies reporting that two people have been killed a lot of disinformation could turn out to be incorrect. it is just like listening to a police scanner. you have to be careful what you put out there. they're still trying to make contact with people on the ground, but we believe based on what a lot of other agencies are putting out, we got the number correct right now. trace: among the things the swat teams tried to do first of all is not just try to secure the perimeter so that the gun man cannot get away, assuming he is still within the vicinity -- gregg: among the things the swat teams try to do first of all is not just try to secure the perimeter so that the gunmen canada away, but also get to the people who have been injured, who has survived, and it is a very difficult thing to do. we have seen it before. they usually approach two different ways -- on the ground and from the air. they got down on to the rooftop, and they move in sort of a concerted effort, keeping in contact with one another. >> here is the concern, though. you are correct. police, law enforcement have a big job ahead of them right now, and part of problem, as we have seen in the sorts of shootings, they cannot just let people start evacuating because you do not know if the shooter or shooters have mixed and mingled their way into that crowd, so why we cannot see pictures specifically of what is going on, it is a common police procedure as much as they possibly can to try to ferret these people out of that building securely and make sure they are not armed and make sure as much as they can at that point that these folks were not involved in this shooting again as you are reporting and as we have heard. it appears that there may have been 1 per cent in a blue shirt dressed in blue jeans that walked into the building and began shooting. again, preliminary, but you have to take into consideration again that police cannot just go in there bully. we know they will not. that is not smart. that is not how they do things. it is really methodical, and it is that part about being methodical that makes this so hard for the families that know they have people who work there, people who have friends inside that building or people who work around that area. police cannot just go in willy- nilly and start looking. they have to be methodical. this takes time. it is a 16-story building. it is the height of the day. people are busy, and in that area, the congested is bad, but the point is to try to find this person or persons who have committed this act. martha: orlando, thank you very much. can we open wofl and see what we are hearing? >> to stay in there, stay down, and be quiet. again, if you have loved ones in this building, and you cannot get a hold of them, it is because they are told to stay down, be quiet, and not to move. when we get more information, we will let you know. we do have information coming from the latest news conference that can just a few minutes ago. i am reading this as i pass this along to you. sees as about the suspect, "if i knew where he went, we would be taking him down." we had different units following with that it would this is involved. she also says she is not going to release who the suspect is until a positive identification of who they are looking for. they are wanting to make sure they are very careful and not giving out wrong information to go off of in again this very fluid situation. she said she does not want to confirm status of the victims, and she will say that have multiple victims. emts confirmed that eight victims have been found, and i would say that is about 45 minutes ago. since then, we have are that that two of those did not make it. most of the initial building, they said, was cleared. traffic in the area obviously impacted, but we do know from calls coming in to our station, people are still inside this building and being told to keep quiet and stay down here and hopefully, if you have people inside the building, they have their cell phones nearby, in a situation like that, you duck and run for cover in do not think about grabbing its own. you just got an update. we received some of that back here at the station. tell me what the latest is from the scene. >> we got an update with a surgeon from the orlando police department, and she is so adamant about putting the word out that security is paramount at this point in time because again, the shooter is still either on their lives or inside the building. the call came in around 11:00 a.m. that shots were fired. they responded to the calls. basically, they are trying to trace where the shots came from right now. they have multiple shots throughout this building, and i are just trying to trace their shots, and hopefully, by tracing those shots, that could possibly lead them to wear the shooter may have escaped from or where the shooter may be right now. they have deployed their active shooter scheme, and there are multiple victims. so what is on the scene. they are still trying to secure various areas, and sgt barbara jones again said they are trying to i did a suspect. i did ask sergeant jones about an account that one of the witnesses had told me, what of the witnesses who was coming out of the building. she told me that she actually knew pretty sure was. she told me that it was someone who actually worked in the gateway center before. i do not know how long the person had worked there, but that person actually knew who the shooter was. i do not know if there was some talk every allegation going on or what, but the person was very familiar to the people inside this building. i asked barbara jones about that, and she said they cannot confirm or deny that right now because they are still trying to aideed who the suspect is. as of right now, all exit ramps in and around i-4 near orange avenue are closed -- they are still trying to id through the suspect is. i have been given an update. right now, they are telling me that the majority of the building is clear, but they still have some people inside, and they are taking every precaution possible to move these people out safely because they have no idea where the shooters. i did ask sergeant barbara jones if they think it is one shooter or two shooters, and she said they think it is just one person at this point in time. we are working right now to bring you live pictures, and we should have a live picture for you all to see actually what is happening down here on ground level of orange avenue in about the next five minutes. as soon as we get that, we will bring it to you, and we will continue to bring you the latest information. >> thank you. recording they're just a block from the scene, watching what is happening. the police do not know if the shooter is still inside the building, outside the building, or escape from the area entirely. in a situation like this, you can be in years of police. if you have family members in this building possibly talk to, and formation of what they saw and what they heard, you can call us at the station. the number at our newsdesk is 407-741-5027. you can call us if you have talked to friends or loved ones in this area. if you are just joining us for this breaking news coverage, we want to give you an update of what is happening. martha: we are watching this with our friends at wofl, and they are giving us a lot of good information on the ground, but the latest is they believe that the shooter is either on the loose or still inside this building. they have been able to clear a number of florists in the building according to the reports we just got on the ground. they seem to be focused on most of the activity having happened on the eighth and the 12th floor. i want to stress that usually in this sort of situation, what you see is the shooter taking his own life or the police taking that shooter out. in this situation, i want to be clear that this sure is still out there and possibly still active. that is why the police all wanting to make sure the continues to be made very clear. there are also early reports just from a few moments ago that people were barricaded into some of the offices, that there was even a cell phone call that got out from one of those offices, and a woman said there were basically barricading themselves in there, and they were very scared, and she managed to get a phone call at that point. she communicated that they were ok, that they were safe at that moment, but they i had been told that the shooting took place possibly on the fourth or eighth floor, and i hesitate to name these lawyers, and want to keep stressing that we do not know exactly where this activity took place. there does seem to be a focus on the 12th and eighth floors, but this is very early information, and i know that anybody who knows anybody in these buildings must be very nervous about that. gregg: it has been reported not only by the "sentinel" newspaper but also by wofl, two dead, eight wounded. those numbers may change. it is still early. the wood is coming out of the building said she knew the shooter, he worked at the gateway center. the majority of the building has apparently been cleared. some people remain inside, and the latest information we are getting now is that at least one news organization is saying, quoting the sheriff's department, they are looking for a male wearing a light blue polo shirt and jeans. orlando salinas is standing by. orly, what more can you tell us? >> we just heard our affiliate there in orlando talking, and the police department said, "if we knew where the suspect was, we would be taking him how." that is a pretty bold statements. they obviously do not know where he is. one of the things about technology, everyone has a cell phone, and as you are reporting it as we are being told by police, you still have a handful folks, victims, who are in that building, and it indeed family members are reaching out to try to confirm and make sure that everybody is okay, those phones are ringing in somebody's pocket or someone's purse, and it that suspect is still in that building and he is on the run and trying to hide, the last thing you want to do if you are barricaded inside is to have your phone ringing and let this guy know that you are nearby. we do not know whether or not this has become a hostage situation. we have no idea, but the last thing you want to do is give somebody the opportunity, so if there is something to be learned, you probably do not want to be calling anybody right now to find out where they are because you do not know. martha: for anybody who may be in there, it is a good idea to turn them off so you do not draw attention to where you are. that is a good point. harris is also getting new information. what are you hearing? >> i was trying to get some good information on what we see in the middle of our screen. i have been able to listen to the orange county sheriff's department scanner, so you may be able to hear that in the background. they have officially -- you see just a few cars on interstate 4 -- officially shut down in both directions now as they try to cordon off this area. that is significant because before, they had only done one eastbound lane. we do not know what that may indicate, but that affects far more people now than first were affected in this downtown area of orlando. could speak to the issue of where their searches concentrated right now. you see just a few cars as they tried to unplug the on and off ramps because those people have been sitting math. they are now releasing some of those cars and people can get out of the way, and have officially shut down i-4. gregg: "orlando sentinel" newspaper has apparently been in touch with people who are still inside. according to the newspaper, they barricaded themselves inside and received little information from law enforcement about whether it is safe to leave. one woman inside the building said that there are bodies of more than one floor. "we've got everybody in one office with the door barricaded with a chest of drawers. there are about 20 in here. we are scared," said the woman who was still inside the building. she asked that her name and business be withheld for obvious reasons. she is still fearful. she says they are watching television trying to see what is going on, but they really do not know. they are scared. there a safe right now, but they are scared. officers with assault rifles are looking for the suspect -- blue shirt, blue jeans. many have their weapons pointed at the parking garage. again, according to the "orlando sentinel" newspaper. obviously, and very heavy police presence there. i-4, which runs east and west, has been shut down. we are also learning that one of the schools nearby is the only school so far locked down, the edge water high school. that suggests that authorities are not ruling out the possibility that the shooter has escaped the building and could be seeking refuge elsewhere, and one would hope not a school where hostages might be taken. martha: one thing that is hard to know is what information the police are giving out. it is possible that they may have a better handle on where this person is then they are letting us know. at this point, we just do not know. in terms of motivation, which is the question, and it is also the question we have been asking ourselves with the fourth good situation, what is the motivation? what makes somebody do this? it is interesting that the local reporter we just heard said that she did talk to a witness who said that she knew who he was, and it appeared that other people know who he was, and that he had worked in the building. if that turns out to be the case, it would mean that we are dealing with sort of a workplace situation shooting, the likes of which, unfortunately, we have covered many times gregg: disgruntled employees often return to the workplace where they feel they have been ill- treated or maybe perhaps they have been fired. after all, there is a great deal of joblessness out there. we learned more about it today. sometimes, that is the motivation. other times, it is simply a deranged individual. gregg: we have sought -- martha: we have someone on the phone who works there and does not want to be identified for obvious reasons. thank you for talking with us. everyone is trying to figure out what is going on. what can you tell us about what happened? >> earlier today, we were notified by people who were working in the office that there was a gun man in the building, and to lock ourselves in our offices, so we got all of our employees into one office and barricaded the door and just waited there and monitored the news to see what was going on, so we were following along with the news, and about 15 minutes ago, the swat team into our floor and evacuate us. martha: that must have been very scary. and the swat team came in, i'm sure you were frightened. >> we were pretty confident it was then because we have been hearing on the news that they were coming up floor by floor, so we knew they were on their way. martha: what floor were you on? >> we were towards the top of the building. gregg: can you tell us what other floors may have been involved? hang on just a minute. let's listen to police. >> we believe it is only one shooter. his name is jason rodriguez. date of birth is 9/28/1969. we believe that the vehicle he may be in is a 2002 nissan suv, silver in color. the tag we believe may be on the vehicle is delta-119 uniform- access -- delta-199-uniform- xray. >> barbara, do you know anything about him? >> if this date of birth is 928 of six -- 9/28 of 1969. i have a picture that i had sent out to two groups. we are asking the public if they know who he is, if they know where he is. i would consider him armed and dangerous, and i would ask that you call your police department or crime line at 1-800-423-tips. we are still in the process of thoreau researching perimeter area buildings. as i spoke to you earlier, i cannot even confirm that the initial building is completely searched yet. we cannot just think he is gone. but i am putting out the picture because if he is out of the area, i'm going to need the other guys in the community to help us. the motive in the shooting is still not determined because this scene itself is still a -- the scene itself is still active. as you can imagine, a lot of officers -- orange county, fire. a lot of information coming in. i can confirm that he is impossible -- i believe he is a former employee. but whether that had anything to do with it, i do not know. i do not know the name of the business. 1000 legion place. >> what can you tell us about injuries at this point? >> i do not want to confirm the status of anybody. obviously, there are families that will need to be notified of the fact that their loved one was involved in this incident, so until i get confirmation that people know that their loved one was involved -- somebody was reporting that there is 17 victims. that is not correct information. it is below 10, but it is multiple victims. right now, i can tell you -- about how many victims would you say? without confirming the status. >> at this point, we have transported 52 ormc. the status is unknown -- we have transported five to ormc. their status is unknown. i was here when the court house, when they had the shooting there, but it was not to this magnitude, obviously. what i'm saying is that we transported five. >> anybody dead that you know of at this point? >> not that i know. i would imagine we are talking about the five that we transported. we have one patient that was a chest pain patient that refused transportation. >> are you going through the building still looking for employees who might be called out in the office? >> we are not. opd is completing a floor by floor search. they are still working on it. >> did the patients come to you, or did you have to go to this office? >> in a couple of the cases, we had to go get them. once they clear the floor for us and indicated that there were victims, we had our units go up and pick up the victims and bring them down. we had two victims that came out of the building, and one victim had come out and run to the leaked out circle area, and that is where they picked him in the that is where they pick him up. i cannot tell you what their condition is. >> have they said anything like this was an ambush or they saw him coming out anything? >> i have not spoken to any of our guys to know. >> did you there is security in a building that initially stopped -- tried to stop the man as he came inside? >> i do not know. to my knowledge, none of them at the hospital are deceased. >> or any of them a security guard, or arctic -- word of people who work in the building? >> i do not have the occupation of any of those that were injured and transported. >> was anyone to seize on the >> scene > i'm not aware. i do not know. >> that is the latest update from here. the situation is still very far from over. again, we are going to take you back to the building so you can see exactly what we're talking about. if you have ever been downtown, it is right there next to the sheraton hotel. plenty of business folks and tourists stay for basketball games for the magic and things like that, so this could have been a much worse situation. this happened just around the lunchtime hour. right now, the chief cannot confirm whether or not there have been any deaths, but we are hearing at least initially that there may be two dead. you heard the chief say that these people, some of them, they cannot even get to. they had to go up and get to them before they could get down to get help. right now, we do not know what kind of motive. we know that some of these people at least were surprised by this shooting. again, we are hearing the shooting on the fourth, eighth, and 12th floor of this building. that is the case, the suspect had plenty of time to get through this building. we do not know if there is security in that building. we do not know of these were just employees. you heard sergeant jones said that he was a former employee, but we do not know yet which office building he was in. we do not know what the motive was, if it had anything to do with that. right now, looking for that man, as you know, who they do not know if he is in this area here, if he had taken off in a car, it he is still in the building because we know that bldg has still not been cleared. that building could still have more people in it, even more victims. this situation is still developing, and we will bring you whenever we can from here. martha: our correspondent for the local wofl down there. we just heard from sergeant barbara jones, who immediately identified the suspect that you now see on your screen. this is jason rodriguez. they believe this is the man who is the shooter. they do not know where he is. they said he was driving a 2002 nissan, a silver suv. the plate on that is d119ux. they want everyone in the area to be looking for this vehicle. he was born september 28, 1969, so he is about 40 years old. there is the place that they are looking for. one of the law enforcement officials said they transported five people to the hospital. he said to his knowledge, none of them were deceased. we did get earlier reports that there were two people to see. as is often the case in these situations, it takes a little while for the actual status to come out. gregg: early reports are inherently unreliable. you heard the police sergeant saying less than 10 and 5 transported to omc, which is the orlando medical center, and one of them may have been simply chest pains related to the stress associated with what was going on inside that building. 16 stories tall, but the floors affected the most appeared to be the fourth, eighth, and 12. it is still not entirely secure. police, as we learn, still searching the building, and indeed, they are searching perimeter buildings there. there is one school that is on lockdown that we mentioned just a moment ago, and obviously, there is concern that this is a man who is armed and dangerous, as police have described him. he could do anything. he could shoot additional victims. he could take people hostage to try to escape, but we know this much so far -- he is a former employee. the motive is unclear. he could have been angry with somebody inside who is not related to his employment. he could have been angry, a disgruntled employee associated with his employment. we do not know whether his employment had been terminated, but often, that is the case, somebody who is angry in the workplace returns with a gun. martha: as you rightly point out, this story is ongoing. they are looking for this man in his car, and in the past, we have seen where someone goes to one location and then they go to another location, and in many instances, it is just a fact that i often take their allies in this process as well. whether or not that is the way this will play out, we have no way of knowing. we have seen similar situations that went that way, so it is a very urgent situation that they apprehend this man because he may be on his way somewhere else. gregg: they are trying to locate, no doubt, his family or friends who can tell them something about him. whether he is rational, irrational, under treatment, and whether he is angry at other individuals. we have seen it, as you point out before, that they go from one location to another as if they have a list of enemies, and they are going to exact revenge. sometimes they do that. they tried to get as much information on the suspect. they know who he is or who they believe he is. martha: no doubt they are trying to get a family member to get in touch with him. a lot of times, they want to establish some kind of communication. that would be the best case scenario to figure out if they can get someone to talk obviously, we do not know his whereabouts at this point, but what a crazy sequence of events we have been reporting over the last 24 hours. you think about this for a good shooting, horrific -- gregg: and sometimes they come in waves. martha: that is true. there's a question of some -- whether or not someone is about to crack. by hearing about another similar situation. gregg: and then decides they are going to do the same thing. they are often referred to as perhaps copycat crimes. not necessarily, it may be a misnomer, but they do seem to happen in waves. there you see the white seen. the ambulance still on the scene, and the parameter has been barricaded off. martha: obviously, they are working on all of the roadways around orlando. it is a busy city center, as you can kind of get a feel for, and we will see later shots, and you see the wider area as well as also being locked down. they are moving traffic very carefully. they are moving this car, a niece and -- nissan 2002. i doubt, there are people who are watching this, especially in the florida area, will probably recognize this man, no this situation. we do not know if he has a family, we do not know what his personal situation is, but this is a life changing moment, not only for the people lose lives were perhaps taken, and we are waiting for more confirmation on that, and certainly when it on the floors of this office building today, and you just wonder what happened when this man woke up this morning, and what caused him, if indeed he is -- this alleged suspect, at this point, walked into this building and opened fire? gregg: jason rodriguez is his name. there is a picture. if you know anything about him, if you could contribute any information, immediately telephoned police. may be driving a 2002 silver nissan as you the -- suv, license plate d119ux. i believe we still have someone who was inside the building when the shooting unfolded. are you still with us. give us your name one more time, and tell us -- okay you do not want to be identified. tell us what happened as you first learned that there had been a shooting. >> we were first notified by an office next door to ours that there was someone within the building with a gun. we did not know that anyone had been shot or that there was a shooting, just that there was a man in the building with a gun. we were told to stay in our office until we were told the coast is clear, and then we started watching the news. we all huddled in one office and turned on the news and found that there had been a shooting and that the suspect was still at large, so we just hunker down. we moved a file cabinet in front of the door. we locked the door. we look out the windows to see the police surrounding the building with the swat team, so we knew it was a serious situation. martha: i'm sure you like everyone else in this country have what stories like this unfold on television. what goes through your mind when you find yourself in this situation? >> honestly, it was very surreal. it was like -- is this really happening? you are right. you hear about these horrendous things on the news, and when it comes as close to home, you suddenly realize you are in the middle of it, it is a producer real feeling. i had not felt that level of feel in an -- that level this year in an awfully long time. martha: did you call anyone or were you afraid to do that? >> i immediately started sit calling them members and friends to let them know i was all right. we knew the police were here so we did not call 911, but we did they were surrounded the building. we were just in lockdown mode. gregg: do you know jason rodriguez? the epiphytes aspect by police. i do not know if you are close to a television set, but we have his picture on screen. do you know him? >> i do not know him. i am not in front of a tv, so i cannot see the photograph. gregg: martha: the police are talking again, so we are going to get to them. >> if you have an employee that was working at that business, and metals -- i believe it was reynolds' and smith or smith and reynolds. i am going to ask that if you have a loved one who was working there, if you could please go to the baptist church at college park. it is on edge water. 1900 atwater drive -- 1900's edgewater dr. >> we have heard that that is an engineering firm. do you know? >> i'm not going to confirm anything about the kind of business. i gave you the information. you can do your own research on what kind of business that is, but i do need, if anybody wants to reach out and wants to get information, that is a family member, to go to that particular location. we have people on-site to assist you with all your needs as it relates to what happened at that particular business. >> do they need to bring anything in particular? >> id would be fine, but i'm sure there are people there that will note with the employees are, and i just -- we did need people to just go there, and we will have offices there able to help you. >> are you doing this for identification purposes? >> we need to be sure that -- we are trying to keep people together so we can share with them and he briefed them on what we know that happened. >> [inaudible] >> i don't know. that is just the name of the business, i was told. >> any sightings of the gunmen? >> not that i know. i'm just saying that right now, we have several aspects we were working on. as information becomes available, i will release it to you, but right now, i have not been given any information. >> has everybody been cleared out of that building? >> once again, it is still active, and for our purposes, we are still working every angle of this investigation. >> how long will those people be there? had they been in touch with their loved ones? >> i do not know. there is different people doing it, and right now, i just need the public to look for that person, give us a call if you see him, and right now, if anybody work in that particular building -- and there may be multiple businesses in there, so i'm just asking if anybody work in that building, that if you need to find out what happened, we have people that are going to assist you. >> no doubt this man is armed and dangerous. a description you can give of what people to do? >> i do not know. i have not been given a force for discussion, but people that do things like this often times will change their shirts. as soon as i can find out, i'll give it to you. >> [inaudible] >> i don't know. one shooting is too many. when you have a guy going into a business on a friday where people are trying to make an honest living and does something like this, i mean, it happens. we just got it. it is just one of those things that we have to do everything we can, and we need your help because we need to get that guy in custody. >>, you can tell, was a discussion of employee? did he had a vendetta against the boss? -- from what you can tell, was this a disgruntled employee? >> in the end, when we are completely done with the investigation, we will know what the facts are based on witness testimony and evidence. that is what an investigation is. but right now, this is still considered active. >> i cannot tell you how many, but you have a large perimeter. you have motorists. we have the knowledge that the sheriff's office assisting us. we have the fire department. we have various chaplains. we have all the resources that the public gives us to protect our public and then to provide them the support that they need in the end, and hopefully, in the end, our tragedy can be soothed some what knowing that we have got the guy in custody. >> are you concerned that he will hook up with someone else? >> we are always concerned about that. the thing is we have to find a guy, and we have to find him if he is in this direct area. we have to find him if he is in that building or another building around the area. whether he is still in the area -- we are certainly going to get sidings. we have plenty of units, and we have the assistance of the orange county sheriff, also, so it is all about everybody working together and trying to get the guy in custody, and that is why we view -- why we need you and the people watching the news to participate in making this community safer. >> could you have gained access possibly from a parking garage? >> you're asking me a lot of details. i am never going to release any specific details because i cannot confirm them. >> [inaudible] >> it is just 1000 legion's place. i do not know if that is the only business, but 1000 regions place, if you have a loved one that worked at that address, i would ask that you would have them go to the church, and we will do some intervention there with the resources that we have and try to make the transition to what happened the best we can. it is just a sad day. >> [inaudible] >> i do not know. i have not looked. i am asking that you stay out of this area. you need to exit before you try to go to idaho or eased down. anything north of colonial drive and around magnolia gardens, orange avenue, and to and including weather, and the surrounding areas. you probably need to stay out of that traffic corridor. >> do you have any information about those injured? >> there is multiple victims, and like i said, as soon as i find out and confirmed, i will let you know. gregg: sgt jones referring to for the very first time murders. there have been reports that said there are two dead, multiple injuries, and there he is, the suspect still at large, armed and dangerous. 40-year-old jason rodriguez, who may have been driving a 2002 nissan suv, a silver one, d119ux. the building, known as the gateway center, 16 stories tall is still not entirely secure. perimeter buildings are also being searched in case this gunmean has taken refuge there. mode of undetermined, but the sergeant did mention what appears to be an engineering firm, which i believe was on the eighth floor, which apparently had some of the victims. you were looking at their website? martha: reynolds, smith, and hill's, billed as an engineering company, architectural services. it is possible they could have been on multiple floors, so it looks like a fairly large company, and it is possible they may have been on more than one floor perhaps. we do not know yet if you work for this company, but that is certainly an idea that is in play here as we watch all this unfold. let me bring in a local wfla radio reporter in the area. talk to me a little bit about what you are learning their son the location? >> what we are learning -- there is some the location? >> what we're learning now is basically every gut -- everything you guys heard. we're looking for a hispanic male named jason rodriguez, who is apparently wearing polo shirt and jeans and a still on the run. the building has not been secured, and all the local schools and highways have been locked down. martha: they got the picture is fairly quickly. i would imagine there's probably cameras in the building as well. let's go back to sargent johnson again. >> obviously, i do not know. i will get that updated. i will let you know if i'm going to confirm if any of them are fatalities, but six victims. please do not put out 17. it is 6. i'm getting that from the fire department. i like to be as accurate as i can so the people watching that have loved ones are not -- 6 is way too many, but that is the information i am getting. >> can you tell us the severities of the injuries? >> i'm going to get into that. once i find out and can confirm any deaths, i'll get into that. >> greg fox has confirmed one death. >> we have six shooting victims, and not going to confirm if any of them had died until my investigators tell me and confirmed the death of any of them. >> with the victims came outside? >> i do not know. i do not know how they ended up shop. once again, the details of how the gun and get in -- those all investigated details that will be part >> of the investigation > [inaudible] -- will be part of the investigation. >> [inaudible] >> i do not know if they are employees. >> [inaudible] >> i only know what i just told you because i have not been back to get updates. i'm not going to confirm that any buildings are completely cleared at this time. what i will do is when we do clear the buildings and the scene begins to open up, and we break down our inner and outer perimeter, i will update you with that and let you know that we have cleared our perimeter, the internal and an external parameter, and we are continuing the investigation, but right now, we have an inside and outside perimeter >> > you cannot confirm at this point if anyone has died? >> i will not confirm any deaths at this point, just that we have six victims of the shooting, and i got that from the fire department. >> as for this family members, we know you preventing college park. is there a number at all? we know this is being broadcast nationally now -- >> these updates are coming fairly quick and fairly furious. they are trying to get as much information out. some of the concern here is about the public. there are at least six victims that were presumably inside that building. we are hearing that the gunmen actually did make it inside that building. we do not know if that means into the parking garage or if that actually means through those front doors or a back door, but there is some word that these victims were kind of ambushed by this suspect that we know now could possibly be wearing blue jeans and a blue shirt. they cannot confirm whether there are any deaths. opd really trying to get the information out to this family members, trying to ease this as much as possible. folks, this is the mayor's staff that has just shown on scene right now. i'm assuming that that means that the mayor may be coming down to try to address this town. carson, can you tell me, is the mayor on his way down? >> the mayor is here, and he will be making a statement shortly. >> the mayor coming down here to try to address this. this has become such a huge involvement here in downtown orlando. all of the firefighters, all of these police officers are in this area right now, not only trying to keep anyone else from being shot, but also to ease the pain for any of the family members. what we do know is many of the buildings around here have been evacuated. they wanted to get everyone out of this area. all long marx street, the buildings have been evacuated. we also know that lake highland prep school, which is a private school just down the road here, that school is still on lockdown. all of the kids there, so far so good. everything is safe there, but we know that at school for now is on lockdown, as are several of the buildings are down here. they really need people to stay at this area. you cannot even get down in this area, but you need to stay out of this area. there is just too much activity, these officers really trying to bring this guy in. we will bring you more as soon as the mayor does our rights. martha: we have to remember, this guy could be anywhere right now. he could be in any neighborhood, and where he had the time to get at this point, and at least to continue to be the main focus. we do know that there are victims, which has been established. tragic day in orlando, fla., on top of what we have been covering in for good. a couple of days for what appears to be this kind of snap in the criminal mind, carrying out these heinous acts. this one, jason rodriguez is the alleged suspect here. he is about 40 years old. who knows what his story is. that will all become clear in time, but the main point is that he is out there. he is armed. he is dangerous. we do not know where he's headed. there is no doubt in my mind that police are trying to contact family members and trying to lock that anyone who might be connected to him, any place he might want to go, and it remains to be seen whether he will be around at the end of this day. gregg: and your point is well taken. where would you go? oftentimes, if you are on the run, you might go to a place you know, or sometimes an individual you know, a friend or family member, and no doubt police are trying to zero in on that. an interesting bit of information we just got in the last bit of commentary, she said six victims, and she would not confirm whether any of them have actually died, although we know, and you heard it as we did she referred to murders in a previous news conference. let's return now to a fire department spokesperson who joins us on the telephone. thank you very much for taking a moment on a tragic day. what can you tell us about the victims if at all? >> we had a total of six victims that were transported to ormc. their status is still on known. staff is actively working to try to save the lives of the victims. gregg: do you have any debts? >> we cannot confirm that at this time. gregg: what can you tell us the fire department has been doing at this scene? >> the fire department at this point, what's the victims were transported, we are basically standing by to see if any additional victims are located -- once the victims are transported. gregg: what can you tell us about the events that have unfolded over the course of the last three hours now? >> obviously, there is a lot of people coming from all over the place down to the scene, and we are trying to keep people from coming in and clogging up the same. obviously, just a hectic day in orlando. there's a lot going on, still a lot of unknowns. at this point, we are just trying to do what we can to console the families. martha: i also understand that the fbi is on the scene. we have news, wire reports to that effect. i'm curious about the building itself, whether or not there is cameras. do you know how he entered the building? are there any videos that exist of his coming and going? is that how you able to identify him so quickly? >> we cannot disclose the tens of the investigation. they are still being looked into. at this point, we do not have the information available. martha: how did they find him so quickly? >> that is a question i cannot answer. at this point, i'm not aware of the affirmation that they have. gregg: we do know that police are searching perimeter buildings beyond just the gateway center. is your department on standby to assist if the need arises? >> we are. we have multiple units on the scene standing by in case more victims are located. martha: do you know if this man worked for this company? >> that information has not been released yet. martha: all right, we are going to continue to watch this, and we hope we can get back in touch with you. gregg: if you get any additional information, please let us know about that. schematics, or when the fire department spokesperson. thank you. -- keith maddox. martha: we are asking all sorts of questions, and he made the is the sum and may not know the answers to others, but the reason is this person is still out there. any information they put out, they have to assume he is hearing as well. one can hope that they have some indication of where they're looking for him, but at this point, we just do not know, and if he is out there and he can't see any of this, the police and everybody in that area would want him to turn himself in -- if he is out there and can see any of gregg: this by the way, if you have any information in a season rodriguez, please telephone police. a scrap of information might be helpful as they search for him. he is a man familiar with this building because he is described by at least one witness at the scene who came out of the building safely, and he had worked there or still works there. so this is a man who knows the building inside and out. he could be secreted inside the building, which is what authorities have not declared this a secure building as of yet clear. martha: appellate, nissan a pathfinder and the xterra, so if you see a 2002 nissan, it could be either one of those. phil keating, who covers the area extensively, is on the phone with us now. what can you tell us? >> this building, and right across the street is a sheraton hotel. it is adjacent to interstate 4, which is a very busy corridor going from tampa on the west of the way up to daytona beach on the right. all lanes of interstate four are completely closed off to traffic. even people across the street at the sheraton hotel are not allowed to leave that building right now. as the cops are now searching floor by floor for the suspect, people are barricading themselves still inside the offices. whether the gunman is still in the building at this point or is long gone in his car, detail still extremely sketchy, people are still very much on pins and needles. orlando police telling anybody in the orlando area who has a loved one that works in that building to go to a nearby baptist church to a group of their -- group of there to try to get information as to the health and safety and well-being of their loved ones, so that nobody from the public comes rushing from the building and crowding at the scene. now a massive search for this gunman. six people shot, multiple shooting inside an office building. reports are that it was the offices of reynolds, smith, and phils -- and hills. reports we are receiving is the former employee there who may have been fired for performance issues. certainly a common factor when you have office shootings around the country. typically, they turn out to be somebody who was disgruntled for some particular reason. gregg: the other bit of interesting information is the fbi has now got involved. while there may not the federal jurisdiction, they often serve our and advisory capacity. as you likely know, because they have highly trained psychiatrists, psychologists, hostage negotiators, people who are able to diffuse a volatile situation with somebody who is armed and dangerous, and the hope may be that this man could be located, and that he could be taken peacefully before any more victims fall to his weapons. we do not know what kind of weapons he has, it is a bar for handguns, and so forth, but the fbi is now involved in obviously providing advice and will take over some jurisdiction if they need to. martha: i was just going to say no doubt his picture was probably picked up by some camera. they were able to make a cross- identification with his license. it looks like this is probably his license picture. and quickly identify what kind of car he had been driving here also possible that a camera had picked up a car coming and going because they seem to be fairly confident that he is in this kind of car, so my guess is that they have a lot more information about probably time clock on when he entered and when he left if they had that kind of video surveillance which moves to buildings like this certainly have. -- which most buildings like this certainly have. >> this certainly has all kinds of potential development possibilities here. if and when he is found, what kind of location he is in, the guy is obviously armed and dangerous, has already shot six people at this point. that is when suddenly you could have a hostage situation unfold. whether they can get this guy where they are able to deal directly with him and not have bystanders' nearby, that will certainly be ideal for the orlando police department or whichever law enforcement department and of finding this guy because again, this happened more than an hour ago. he certainly could have driven away and be several miles away, or he could still be in the building. police have not ruled that out at this point. gregg: all different kinds of law enforcement -- enforcement agency's converged together, and all provide information. disseminate information quickly, and i also have all kinds of surveillance capabilities. let's listen in to the local reporter. >> there are staying there swat team has been called in to look for someone inside those apartments. we do not know yet what they have found inside. we do know they are on seen at an apartment complex looking for this suspect. no word yet on if they have spotted that vehicle. they said even here, they do not know it he was writing his vehicle year. nobody in the area actually saw the vehicle. they just know that it is registered to jason rodriguez. right now, opd swat team has headed to an apartment complex, taking to look to see if that's suspect may in fact be inside. id. gregg: the local reporter telling us something new, and it is not unexpected, by the way. the first thing they would do is find out where jason rodriguez lives, the shooting suspect, and it would converge on the apartment complex to see whether or not he had gone home. it would also converge on relatives' residence is to see if he is there. anybody who would give refuge to the shooting suspect. martha: top of the hour now. 2:00 on the east coast. we are covering it breaking news story for the second time in as many days. it is a shooting story we are sharing with you. we are going to bring you details on that as we get them, but today the story is out of orlando. you are looking at the gateway center on the left side of your screen. this is the site of at least six victims who were shot, we believe by the man on the other side of your screen, who you just saw, jason rodriguez. he is believed to have been an employee of the landless, smith, and hill's, a company located on at least a couple of floors in the building -- are of reynolds, smith, and hills. we also know that there are at least six victims. we are still waiting for confirmation as to whether or not any had died. we are waiting for information. he is said to be wearing a light blue polo shirt, jeans, and possibly driving a 2002 nissan as you be with tag d119ux. if you recognize this man or know anything about him, please call police right away because they are in the middle of a manhunt, and report we just got is that police were going to -- was that the swat team was going to an apartment building. whether that is going to be something or whether that will be a dead end, we do not know yet, but we will continue to bring this to you as it unfolds. gregg: law-enforcement officials said in a previous conference that the motive in this case is undetermined. those are her words, but the fact that he is either current or former employee of public engineering firm reynolds, smith and hill in that building invites the question whether he returned to the building to exact some kind of revenge or to vent his anger at perhaps the way he was treated there by individuals relative to his employment or whether he had a beef with somebody who worked in the building and brought a gun inside the building, which is why many buildings have metal detectors and high-tech security before you can enter the building. we do not know what it was at this particular building, but it has not been fully security. they are still searching the building because the suspect knows the building well, having worked there, and he could still be hiding someplace inside that building. they are also searching perimeter buildings as well. in fact, he may have just gone to another building to hide from police. they have, we now know, a swat team has gone to his apartment building or a apartment building that he made frequent. he might live there. it could be some relative or friend who lives there, but they have gone to that location as well, and we would like we expect other locations to be visited by law enforcement. martha: and once again, this is an ongoing situation. there is a manhunt underway, and as we were saying, having covered too many of these stories, often, you find this person going in the direction of a place they know, family members, and no doubt, police are trying to get in touch with all the family members they can. it could be that this man is holed up somewhere and hiding. it could be that he takes his life, as we often see in these situations as well. >> just pulled up along the crime scene tape. nobody has gone in and out of that, and it is possible they are going to start removing things from that building, and i are trying to block our view, and it could just be because that is a better vantage point, but they have moved friday to block the views, at least of the camera's right now. if it is empty. nobody has gone in or out, but we are watching closely. we are also told that the mayor will speak in just a few moments. he is being briefed right now by orlando police. we have not yet seen the chief in this area, but we are told she is a press of this situation and is very close. again, we have confirmed at least one person is dead, shot inside that building. gregg: wofl now confirming everyone's worst fears, that indeed, they have confirmed at least one death, although again, i come back to what sergeant jones may have inadvertently said when she referred to murders -- plural. she will not confirm any deaths, at least she did not confirm any in her least -- to last brief news conference, referring to six victims. wofl now confirming at least one. there may be more. i have to think that thought it was a mistake and revelation, but perhaps an accurate one when sgt jones referred to murders as well. again, there you see the building. it is not fully secured yet. the gunmen could be inside, maybe not, but jason rodriguez, a hispanic male, 40 years old, who could be driving a nissan suv, silver, d119ux is the license plate. if you know it, if you have seen him, if you have any information that might be helpful to police, you are encouraged to contact them. martha: this is the great the way of finding what the location looks like. it is very close to a highway. very possible that he could have caught on their if he did leave this location in a car. it's it is an area that has lots of clothes release, highways all over the place, and they are searching for him actively -- is an area that has lots of clover leafs. it is not that easy to get away with this many police and fbi are searching for this man, and the patterns of a kick in, going to replace you know, seeking some kind of refuge. this man is clearly despondent, clearly disturbed, and who knows what he might do, and he is armed and dangerous, as police have been telling us. gregg: and desperate. desperate people will engage in a rational behavior. the fbi has joined in this now, and they have extremely -- they are extremely s -- experience i had it to individuals who can firmly -- verbally deal with a suspect who may be a danger to others or himself. obviously, you do not why hostage situation, but if he is that dangerous, he is that desperate. martha: we are going to also when his story, what happened to him at his workplace, why he may have targeted a specific people, if indeed he did. there's a history here, and the frightening thing is that everybody has had situations at work where someone gets let off or something happens, and it is the last thing on somebody's mind that it will end up in this situation. we're watching a woman earlier who said their work barricading themselves with file cabinets against the door. the scary thing, but this is unlikely it will happen to anybody, it has happened all across this country. over the past 15 or 20 years. gregg: sometimes, it is the most innocuous of transgressions that occurs in a workplace where somebody who is perhaps emotionally on edge, psychologically disturbed, and that becomes the so-called trigger. both figuratively and literally in this case, armed with weapons, at least one gun. in an open fire, at least one victim, according to wofl is dead. martha: they pale in comparison to what the man is doing now. according to our research folks, they have been working on his past. it says in december to dominate, for careless driving the fines, he paid them off. and that is in his history that we can find so far. gregg: no recorded evidence of offenses related to violence here. martha: usually, people said they had no idea he was capable of this, seems to be living in normal life. gregg: there, you see helicopters flying above the gateway center. i would not imagine it would be secure for a long time. it is easy to hide in a building. there are no synchronies anywhere. as we learn in the real murder case, in which the victim had been murdered, a student in a related yale office building, her body had been hidden in a panel in one of the floors, and it was not discovered for several days. even the search dogs could not locate the body. martha: as we said, wofl is reporting one person dead. we do expect to hear from the mayor of orlando. that is expected to happen in about four minutes. as soon as that gets underway, we will take you right there. police encouraging and one in the area to please stay away, for a number of reasons. is blocked off as they do this investigation. also, for your own good, but we do not know where this person is. he could be anywhere, so people need to be attuned to that act. gregg: they have locked out at least one school, although we did hear reports of multiple schools being locked down. that is one of the things that you hear people there, go to the local schools nearby, take refuge, and you secure those places are locked out until the area is clear. obviously, that worries the parents, but they should take some solace in the fact that they are in lock down, and they are likely being protected by law enforcement as well. some of the other buildings, apparently, are on lockdown, too. we are getting word that those other buildings have not been secured by police. as well as an apartment connected to the gentleman on the right, the shooting suspect in this case. jason rodriguez, 40 years old, who was at large, his motive for the shooting and determined. martha: a sad story will watching today and a nervous one as well as he is on the list somewhere and police are trying to track him down. we are continuing to keep an eye on this. i want to bring in right now a forensic psychologist. >> thank you for having me. it is a very sad situation. martha: it is. we are sitting here, and unfortunately anyone in this business has covered many of these situations. talk to me a little bit about the psychology. what kind of person does this? >> what we know about these situations and indeed the one at fort hood as well is that people that he eventually go over the edge and commit these heinous acts have had a buildup of sad situations over time. they have had disagreements with co-workers, poor performance evaluations, writing or spoken to people about the beating of violence -- or believing that violence is ok. over time, that builds up to a point where they go over the edge, and something usually triggers it. they may lose control and do something very heinous as this. gregg: are these individuals who suffer from some mental disease or defect oftentimes? >> oftentimes, they are, but very often, it is more a deficit in their ability to cope with the frustration and activities every day. many of these people have had trauma in their lives, which has been so overwhelming that it has not allowed them to develop good coping, so when they get overwhelmed, they do something that is totally out of the ordinary, abnormal, inappropriate, rather than a coping with whatever situation comes up that you and i might just take in stride. gregg: we often hear the familiar refrain from family and friends that they did not see it coming. that he seemed so gentle and kind. on the other hand, we do hear people say you could see this coming. >> right, and i think what happens is one group of people may see little signs and think it is not so bad, and another group of people say they see a few signs, that was not so bad, but looking back on it, you see if they put it all together that it was really serious, but not every part of the system has the whole picture, so they thought that part of the picture was not so bad. martha: thank you very much. we are about to go to a news conference moments from now. who knows what is going to turn out to be? this man situation and circumstances that drove him to this. there are, as i said, a lot of previous situations you can compare to, but jason rodriguez's story, if indeed he is the killer, and there is reason to believe that he is -- his story is his own, and we are going to hear throughout the afternoon. sot teams have been deployed and are active in this situation that was ongoing. it is a little lockdown on the entire area. there is a sheraton hotel across the street. those people are being held as a way to find out where we go from here. we will hear in a moment from the wofl reporter on the scene. she has been giving us great coverage on the ground. we are also waiting for the mayor to speak moments from now as well. gregg: we do have a spokesperson from reynolds, smith and hill, the firm that was inside the building. mr. jacobsen, can you tell us whether the shooting suspect was employed by your firm? >> he was not currently employed. he had worked for as previously. his employment was terminated two years ago in july of 2007. gregg: in what capacity did he work for your firm, and why was employed meant -- what was his employment terminated? >> he was beginning engineer, and he was let go because his performance was not very good, and he worked for us right at one year, so we gave him a one- year trial. he was let go. gregg: was he angry about his departure? >> we never heard from him in over two years, so it was quite a surprise. gregg: had he appeared in the workplace before since his termination? >> not that i know of. gregg: do you have any explanation as to why this happened? >> i wish i did. the fact that he was let go over two years ago just makes it very mysterious. gregg: were any of the victims employees of reynolds, smith and hills? >> our information is yes. gregg: can you tell us how many >> we do not have that information. and number were hit, but we do not have the extent of their injuries. gregg: was this on the eighth floor? >> yes, that is where our offices. gregg: what information did you get from surviving employees? >> their the ones to call our corporate offices in jackson. they advised us that the individual came to the office with a gun and they tried to talk to him, and he started shooting. gregg: what did he say? >> that information i do not know. i'm sorry. i wish i had more information, but i do not. gregg: i know, and mr. jacobsen, we appreciate your indulgence. did he specifically target individuals, or did it appear to be random? >> i do not know what he was going there for, but he has hit a variety of different people, so i do not know. the office leaders were not there. martha: mr. jacobsen, first of all, my sympathies to you and everybody at your company. this is probably the most horrible day any of you imagine what happened, and we are sorry for the loss and the injuries that have been incurred here. all right, i just want to ask a quick question -- was his superior, the person he worked for in the building? >> no, he was not. martha: hold on, it would. we appreciate it. let's listen in. >> i'm going to interrupt the thought your cheek just a minute because he is saying that that patient has nothing to do with the shooting here in the building, but i am getting confirmation out sideofd that the shooter has been arrested -- confirmation outside ofd that the shooter has been arrested. jason rodriguez presumably in custody. we are trying to ask barbara jones more about that, but we think now that the shooter has been put into custody. you can see right now the mayor and orlando police chief on their way over here to address the situation to see if they can confirm that this situation has in fact been brought to an end, but we are getting confirmation now that the shooter has been arrested. just to update you guys -- >> [inaudible] martha: all right, as you just heard, big headline right now is that the shooter has been arrested, which has to be a tremendous relief to the police and fbi and ground in that area that they were able to apprehend this man, and we have to confirm this, but hopefully before any more damage was done. we will find out very shortly when this news conference gets under way, i would imagine, where he was taken in and whatever else they know about what his motivation might have been in this case. gregg: and how he was taken in. was there a gun battle? did he willingly give himself up without such? what is his condition? and, obviously, the answer to the question that everyone wants to know -- why? why would you do such a thing? why would you enter the former place of your employment, terminated two years ago, suddenly returned to reynolds, smith and hills and open fire? it is inexplicable. it is irrational by anyone's sensibilities. there, you see the mayor and chief of police, i believe, who i do not know and cannot identify. but there is the mayor of orlando, who is apparently going to be addressing the media that has gathered near our wofl cameron, the camera we are using. we may hear right now. let's listen in. >> as you know, cheese demmings --chief demmings is here and the mayor of the city. >> obviously, we have had a tragic incident here in the city of orlando, and first, our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and the members of their family. there were six victims. i will let the chief report a little more on that. secondly, this was a model response by the orlando police department, and their supporting agencies. the gunman has been apprehended so the community is safe. that is the important thing to know now. opd responded within one minute of the 911 call and was immediately on the scene. a lot of people have been impacted, but opd and our residents have been extremely cooperative, and this was really a model of how to respond to an incident like this year and i want to turn it over to the key to give you some of the facts. >> we have five that were victims of the shooting. we have one that was -- started having chest pains, and we do have one confirmed death. >> do you think that was the target? >> there are still a lot of details we are sorting through. it was such a tragedy to occur, aspects -- especially after the shooting in texas yesterday. a lot of details we need to sort through, but we are proud to say the swat team has apprehended the suspect. he was located at his mother's residence, and he is in custody. >> can you tell us about the apprehension? how did it go down? >> we received information that he may be in the area of his mother's residence. we sent some officers and our swat team out there. they confirmed -- they had intelligence information on him. they were able to see him through the window, and asked him to come out. he did. he was arrested without incident. >> did you try to commit suicide? >> we have not heard any details like that. i'm sure there was a lot more information that will be coming in. >> what was he doing? >> can we talk about motive or why he did this? >> i really wish i knew the motive. our investigators will be working around the clock to try to figure out why he did what he did today. there are still a lot of details we will try to have to sort through. >> where the fatalities of former employees as well? >> we have not identified the person that is dead, but there is one confirmed fatality. >> after talking to people in this building today, can you give us an overview of what might have transpired that you know at this point? >> are around 11:00 today, we received a call of an active shooter in the facility behind us. all units responded. as the mayor said, they arrived with a minute, which was a very quick response. their first concern was the preservation of life and to rescue those who may be injured. they began a building search of each of the floors. i believe there are 18 clauses in the building. we are just trying to locate exactly where the shooting occurred, what the conversation was before that, to talk to building security to get their information, and the investigation continues. >> what was his demeanor? did he seem like he might have been blacked out? -- whacked out? >> officers did not make contact with the gunman when we initially responded. the information we received about his demeanor is coming from witnesses that the detectives are in the process of debriefing right now. >> did you just a shooting or did you go to the location of the business? >> we are talking to security to find out how that happened. >> did security tried to stop him? >> was there another person to give them up, or was this can police work? >> the call came in, and our intelligence units have been out here since 11:00 trying to identify who the is, receive the call information. we started looking for his vehicle, started working on information from his cell phone, and through all of that, along with crime line tips that started coming in, we were able to find out his location and subsequently arrested in. >> did the police departments are to look into his past? >> of course. i have not been briefed by our intelligence officers as of yet. >> are you confident that he acted alone? >> we are confident of that at this point because the brief intelligence that i am aware of was that it was one lone gunmea. >> [inaudible] >> that is correct. one fatality. five wounded. >> [inaudible] >> not to my knowledge. any more information you want to add? the cheap from the fire department can add about the victims -- chief of the fire department. >> everyone we have checked on at the hospital in stable. we also have one medical condition related to the incident, and the patient has been treated and is also in stable condition. we have one victim with novara's when the crews went in. under the project and aopd because the building was not secured at this time -- under the protection of opd. we got them out of the building, got him immediately treated and sent to the hospital during the medical records for the paramedics were here on the scene to assist as an absolutely making sure that everything went well. at this point, everybody is stable. except for one no code no vitals. >> when will we get identification of the person? >> we want to make sure that the family -- no, there have not been any notifications. you can imagine how family members feel who have relatives working in this building. the person has not been identified, nor have any notifications been made. i do want to mention in response, not only from the orlando police department, but from the orange county sheriff's department, and i believe every federal, state, and local agencies find it and came to our aid today. it has been a long day, but it was a wonderful collaborative effort to identify the suspect. >> the people who were evacuated -- are they now cleared to go home? >> our officers are put in a process for those persons who we believe were not related at all, did not witness anything, we are in the process of trying to release them. >> [inaudible] >> she lives in an apartment complex. i do not have the exact address. >> did she called police in a chance? sometimes i guess the situations, relatives will turn relatives in. >> she may have. there were several calls received, and she may have been one of them, but i cannot confirm that at this time. my understanding is that in 2007 -- and i cannot confirm this information -- he was terminated from the business. >> no idea of some specific was the target or if he was just as a bundled at the building? >> is does not appear based on the information i currently have that he was targeting any specific person. >> [inaudible] >> what i have been told is that it was a handgun. i'm not certain of the caliber at this time. >> meier, this is your city. you have been here a long time. can you talk about how this shakes a city? >> certainly, it impacts the city and its residents when you think it cannot happen here but it does. but on the bright side, the response from opd and ofd and the other law enforcement agencies to contain this to immediately captured the bad guy, and to cordon off the situation -- i think the citizens can be proud of the police work that has been done here today. >> how did you feel after hearing about it? >> i heard from the chief very quickly, and that was wendy -- it was an active site, and they did not know where the shooter was, our immediate thought was what was happening in the neighborhoods. my son, for instance, goes to like thailand, and they were in lockdown -- martha: -- lake highland. martha: we can tell you the adjacent gonzales has been taken into custody. he was at his mother's house. jason rodriguez, thank you very much. it unfolded much as we have seen some things in the past. we do not know if his mother called in his presence there, but they said he went in without incident, and he has now been arrested. one person dead, five others wounded. it sounds like they are in stable condition, and hopefully, they will pull through this core of the situation. that said, there is still another unfold in fort hood story, which we have continued to follow four years since it happened exactly 24 hours ago, and this is the scene at the pentagon where we are watching. you can see the senator from texas and the other senator from texas all gathering for a moment of silence to remember those who were lost at fort hood. shepard smith will be joining us and we'll talk was about this portion of the story as well. shepard: debt has been a difficult day for all the representatives on capitol hill as they tried to do two things it wants. it has been difficult while they are working on this health care debate and now, this absolute tragedy at fort hood, and certainly, fort hood is a place that has seen much more than its share of tragedy over the years, and now, they are coming together to mourn those who were lost. as we try to get to the bottom of why this happened, and warning signs, it now appears from all the reporting we have seen overnight that the warning signs were there. martha: you know, i'm just looking to also a report that has come through from the "washington post." we get ready for this moment of silence, and the sergeant and mark todd, army civilian police who were able to stop this shooter, and the remarkable story of their courage as this unfolds. we are now learning that mark todd took off his belt and wrap it around munley's thigh where she had been shot. one point, they were afraid he was starting to be loved, and they were able to taken down. he is still alive, and hopefully, he'll be able to answer some questions during in meantime, the mourning process for those lost. we are still learning who was lost in this horrible tragedy that unfolded among people who were on their way to fight for our country in iraq and afghanistan, and your heart goes out to these families. never did they expect to lose their son or daughter in this way. shepard: there are a lot of things we do not yet know. i want to avoid speculation, but we know for a long time, the word was that the suspect was dead, and during that time, they were able to interview people, and you have to run through your mind was sort of advantages that might have given them with people believing that the suspect was dead. secondly, this was a graduation ceremony. 150 people graduating. how many video cameras were rolling as this madman came in and began shooting up this graduation ceremony? how many children watched it? how many video cameras were confiscated by the military? how much of the picture will they be able to tell? i would venture a guess that this might have been, given the information we have, the most video tape and documented incident of its kind in the history of this country. time will tell. we are 10 seconds away from 24 hours to the moment since the shooting began. a moment of silence on capitol hill. let's listen. >> [inaudible] shepard: and the moment of silence and come 24 hours to the moment since the gunman went on his rampage in fort hood, just adjacent to killing, texas. lots of investigating to be done. suspect in the hospital, we are told. in stable condition, we are told. the suspect and a police officer, who from what we are told, was in a shootout with him was injured as well but is also expected to survive. now, to get to the bottom of who knew what and when and how to prevent something like this: fully from happening again. continuing coverage throughout the afternoon. thoughts and prayers and back down to you. martha: absolutely. thank you very much. you'll be back in a little while as we continue our coverage of the horrific events that took place at fort hood and try to answer the questions about why. we are learning more about this suspect and what was on his mind. he clearly, as he expressed to others, did not want to go to afghanistan, where we are told he was going to be deployed shortly. bill hemmer is on the scene there in fort hood, texas, and has been providing coverage throughout the day. we are waiting for a news conference where we may learn some more. >> yes, indeed, we are. first responders and also the colonel on the dais on the post behind me -- a colonel and base behind me. this is one of the best opportunities we have to get information. we had a briefing this morning when the sun was coming up about 7:30 local time, and that is when it was confirmed by the military that he was to be deployed by the military to afghanistan. we do not know when, but the suggestion is by the end of this month, which would be three weeks from now. the details of the shooting itself would blow your mind. he was in military fatigues when he had these two handguns flailing inside the area. the deployment area where soldiers get ready before the ship out to iraq or afghanistan. i am told by a colonel year -- here that 500 people have been gathered. this is an area about half a city block large. the shooting first started on the inside, and that is where they dropped this man, where you describe this female officer responding within five minutes of the first nine want recall -- the first 911 call. the mind wanders. we are about to get more details on the facts of what they experience. martha: it appears according to this "washington post" report that we have on our wires that he was fleeing the building, as you mentioned, so he was leaving that area where there were some 500 people gathered, a and asshepard pointed out, no doubt video cameras rolling, supposed to be a happy ceremony -- as shepard pointed out. suppose to be a happy moment for these people as they would head to afghanistan and iraq to protect our country. a horrific scene of what happened. when he went out, and he was stopped, they thought that he was beginning to reload, and who knows where he would have had it from there. but, bill, as we get ready to hear more about this, also the details coming out about his clear disgruntlement with the military. he was trained by the united states to be in a position he was in. it is a sad situation we are learning. >> two things to add on that. local media reporting that in the neighborhood where he lives, at his apartment before he came to the post yesterday, he was giving furniture away to neighbors. he was also giving away, k to theoran -- also giving away copies of the koran. also, this guy is in the hospital on a ventilator, and investors -- investigators have not been able to ask him his questions, and with four gunshot wounds, we do not know how long it will take to revive him. we had more than 30 people injured overnight last night, and one of the injuries turned so bad that we added it to our total of deaths. martha: just to correct it, we know that the shooting happened in to local area that was just outside of this graduation area. we're talking we should go out to the army secretary and chief of staff. i'm not sure if this is in speaking right now. if you guys could fill me in. >> had the chance to go to the processing center, received a full break from a variety of law enforcement agencies -- a fullbrie brief. local police, texas rangers, and others were working seamlessly together, and we so deeply appreciate that. after that, our party traveled to darnell to hear from the medical staff as to the condition of those who have been wounded and who are still in treatment. we had the chance to visit those in the intensive care unit and on the general board, and thereafter, to go visit with a grouping of those who are processing these soldiers through the processing center at the time of this very tragic incident. we thereafter went to one of the chapels, had a chance to meet with a 36 engineer brigade. a group of soldiers that had an extraordinarily tough day amongst so many soldiers that had a tough day. yesterday, four killed. 11 wounded. we tried to do our best to talk about how the army family will stand with them. obviously, our thoughts, our prayers are particularly with those of the fallen, the families of the soldiers who were killed. the soldiers and the families of those who were wounded in action. these are soldiers who were preparing to do what they love for the country that they loved. we wanted them to know, and we want america to know that the united states army, the united states government stands ready to provide them every possible assistance -- not just today, not just through the weekend, but what will undoubtedly be very challenging times ahead. i want to give a special thanks and word of admiration to the first responders, those who came when the word went out within minutes of the shots being fired in the center, and those soldiers who utilize their battlefield live-saving training in the building as the situation was still unfolding to save lives, and we were told that those actions did indeed save lives. and thanks to the medical personnel and professionals add darnell, those who work at scott white and metroplex and others who have done just an incredible job pitching in and helping the fort hood community respond to those challenges as well. i want to say thank-you to the president of the united states, the vice president, secretary of defense, all of whom have been personally involved with this situation from the first minute. -- the first minute we were made aware of what was happening in texas and at fort hood. as secretary of defense told the chief and myself, every possible resource, every possible form of support will be made available to the soldiers, the families of the command staff here at fort hood. the army family is strong, but a great source of that strength is what we derive from each other. in times of crisis and challenge, how we hold each other straight and how we make a difference. we are going to provide every necessary resourced to ensure that those in need have what they need, those in need are taken care of. the full source of the army stands behind the general, his command staff. i have to tell you, from my perspective, they have done an incredible job responding to an incredibly difficult challenge. most of all, we want the soldiers and the families here at fort hood and across every army facility, everywhere in the world to know this is a time for the army family to stand together. this is a time where armies -- for armstrong to mean what it says, and this is a time to know that we are working every moment to ensure that their safety and security is met to the highest possible degree -- this is a time where army strong means what it says. >> thank you, mr. secretary. it has been, frankly, an honor to a company secretary to talk to the victims, their families, and the care providers. i will tell you candidly -- this was a kick in the gut. not only for the fort hood community, but also for our entire army. the secretary and i are here to ensure that fort hood has the resources they need to mount a sustained response because this is going to take a while, and we want everyone to know that the full resources of the army and the department of defense are behind the men and women of the fort hood community. i will tell you that across the army in the last 24 hours, i have asked the guard leaders to come together behind the victims, their families in need for good community. i have asked them to examine their treasures and take appropriate action. i have asked them to keep their soldiers informed and not rush to judgment until the investigation is completed. and i have asked them to stay focused on a mission. as i said, i have full confidence in the team here, given the response that i have seen, and i have full confidence in a local community and the state and federal agencies that have fallen in here to help the men and women here. unfortunately, over the past eight years, our army has been no stranger to tragedy, but we are an army that draws strength from adversity. and hearing the stories of courage and heroism that i heard today makes me proud to be the leader of this great army. i heard stories about medics who were sitting in a graduation in the building next door, hearing gunfire and running to the sounds of the guns because they knew there would be wounded in their caps and gowns. i talked to a young private who was sitting in his pickup truck in a parking lot, who heard gunshots, went back after his buddies, and with the help of others, drag four badly wounded individuals into his pickup truck and drove them to the emergency room, saving their lives. i talked to numerous soldiers who were wounded, giving first aid to their fellow soldiers. i am very proud, not only as a member here at fort hood, but our whole army. we will greet as a family, and we will maintain our focus on our mission is g we wouldrieve as a family -- we will grieve as a family, and we will maintain our focus on our mission. we will not be able to give information on this aspect of the crime scene, so with that, we'll take your questions. >> do you believe that this was a wake-up call to the nation that the army is simply too small to carry out the tasks given? have a suicide rates that are off the charts, the soldiers under great stress, is this a signal that the army does not have enough to do the job? >> i don't think so. i think it is way too early to make a judgment that is that pronounced. there is no question that we are stretched, but you mentioned the size of the army. we are 40,000 soldiers larger than we were 2 1/2 years ago. 70,000 soldiers larger than we were five years ago. and the development of the army that has taken place over the last five years, finally, has put us in a much better position. way too early to make a judgment as significant as you are suggesting. >> in light of that, and lot of funding has been earmarked for stress-related treatment programs, but several of those items are not online yet. is it time to accelerate? and what is going to be done to move it faster? >> we have been trying very hard to understand the effects of stress, understand the causes of everything from domestic violence to suicide to other crimes and other filings. our problem is not so much a matter of resources as it is answers. for example, the army has just entered into a five-year longitudinal study on the causes of suicide with the institute of national mental health. that is going to be an ongoing effort to better understand what drives people to do desperate things. from my perspective, after 17 years in congress and 17 years on the house armed services committee, you are always concerned about resources, but for the moment, we are concerned about developing the answers that are necessary to apply those resources in an appropriate way to try to make a difference, and that is the challenge right now. we have a suspect. we have terrible crimes that have been alleged. we have to understand what caused that suspect to act in the way in which he did and to derive from that programs that can make a difference and hopefully alleviate the opportunity of that occurring in the future. >> can i tell you about a program, a $125 million program that is online and is available and is being used by soldiers today? it is called a comprehensive soldiers fitness and it started on october 1. there is an online survey that soldiers can go online and take, and thousands have already done it. it connects them to self-help models, and the program is a long-term development programs to help them build resilience to given the strength to deal with adversity that they will be confronted with over the next several years. the other thing, on monday, 150 of the sergeants and family members will be at the university of pennsylvania to make them master resilience trainers. it is our goal to have this in every battalion size unit in the army. we are moving forward on the program that will help our soldiers and family members to deal with the challenges ahead. >> [inaudible] is it possible that the dangerous signs were overlooked? >> way too early to tell. i know that is part of the investigation, and another will a very hard at that. i know that she was one of the first responders that was there and was wounded. >> [inaudible] >> we did not meet with her. what i was told was she was one of the first to arrive on scene and to take the suspect under fire, so she probably saved a lot of lives with her action, but i do not specifically about what she did. >> [inaudible] >> that is part of the investigation. what we have right now is a joint lead investigation between cid and fbi. one of the critical questions of that process is what does the evidence suggests, and what will the evidence supports with respect to prosecution in one respect or the other -- what is the evidence suggest and what will the evidence support? we have not been informed of any formal charges having been levied, and it is a matter of investigation solely at this point. >> have any other persons of interest in identified so far? >> there is only one remaining suspect at this point. that may change, but right now, there's only one. >> a short time ago, it was said that it cannot be ruled out that others may have been involved. how concerned are you that other soldiers army wide may have participated? >> i would not want to speculate on that. the fact that there may have been other soldiers involved is something the investigation will uncover. to extrapolate that across the rest of the army, and does not prepared to do that. >> [inaudible] do you have a program right now where you do supervise the conduct of soldiers who might be becoming particularly radicalized? >> there are programs. i don't know. i think this may come out a little later in the course of the investigation, but there are programs that can monitor that. we also have programs to build resilience in our care providers. that is something that we have been working on for the last couple of years. i'm sorry. right here and then back over here. >> [inaudible] >> as i said earlier, with respect to suicide, we are enormously concerned. that is why we are initiating a groundbreaking program. much of the credit, i might add, is the vice chief of staff with the institute of mental health to try to understand the dynamics and the forces. and also has great ability into the general population. what i said, neither here nor there politically, but what i said during my confirmation hearing, the five-year study is too long in terms of providing its answers. and really in a very unique way, to their credit, the institute of mental health has said that they are going to provide reports on a regular basis so we can monitor what they are finding, and at their guidance, if there are answers and responses and programs we need to implement in the interim, we are going to do that. so we take this very seriously when any time one of our own takes their like bardera on hand. b --y their own -- by their own hand. >> [inaudible] >> i would not say i fear it, but one of the reasons i told our leaders to keep their people informed and not rush to judgment or speculate until the investigation comes out is i do worry slightly about a potential backlash, and we have to be real concerned about that. >> [inaudible] >> any time you have an investigation of a crime scene, you keep open all possibilities. i think the senator was responding in a very accurate way as to how law-enforcement agencies approach a crime scene and say we do not know what we do not know. and having, as i said, gone to the readiness center, matt, and being greeted by cid, fbi, texas rangers, d zeroes, -- our own des and others, they are being pursued vigorously, but at this point, as far as i know, we do not have anything that supports -- the points to this specific piece of evidence that suggest what you're saying. >> [inaudible] >> there is a total of about 20 different units that were affected in one way or another. i do not have that. you can get that from the public affairs folks. >> there was a similar incident two months ago in baghdad. there was talk at that time about addressing that. do you think that that was sufficient, or do you think that was not quick enough? >> the baghdad situation is a very serious one. that investigation has provided some guidance. those individual pieces of guidance are being implemented across the army to try to ensure that what happened there would be far less -- you cannot ever guarantee anything -- but far less likely to happen in the future. the particulars of this instance from what we know now and what we know in baghdad are substantially different. in iraq, you had a soldier who gave some signals. there was opportunity and availability to try to relay that up the chain of command. there were failures of cell phone systems, etc. here, as far as we know, you have an alleged act or who did not reach out. in fact, who did not do a lot of things, so i do not think there is a parallel there, but there are similarities in that we want to take every step necessary to ensure that these kinds of instances do not repeat themselves. obviously, we risk sounding ridiculous to say it, but take it seriously so it never happens again. >> nevertheless, the threat is no longer just from the outside. it is from the inside as well. what can you do about it? can you do anything? is there anything you can do to prepare yourself for? prepare yourself for?
