>> what's left. >> trace: to blizzards, to nightmarish floods. >> i have no place to live. >> we lost everything. tonight, a look back at disaster on an unprecedented scale. but just into fox news, a major development in the case of a gunman accused of shooting a soldier. i'm trace gallagher in for shep and fox news has now confirmed that the man accuse of shooting a army specialist during a welcome home party is in custody. he surrendered at a sheriff's station not far from san bernardino, california where the shooting took place. family members say specialist christopher sullivan is in critical condition after the shooting. he had only been home for two days. relatives say he had been recovering from injuries he suffered during a bombing in afghanistan and he was at that welcome home party when witnesses say his brother and another man began arguing about football. >> he went to defend his brother and the guy pulled out a gun and shot christopher twice, one in the buttocks and one in the upper -- in the neck. and christopher will never be able to walk again. >> trace: he will never walk again. an american hero wounded in afghanistan now paralyzed in california. police say this man is the suspect. reuben ray jarado he is now behind bars. what are you hearing tonight? >> trace, the san bernardino police department has confirmed to me in the last half hour that the primary suspect in this hearing ray jarado did surrender in chino hills, he has since been transferred to the san bernardino police department. we don't know what his demeanor was when he was surrendering. he will remain in custody there when the officers determine whether he will be arrested and charged. no word on his demeanor or what he said. the primary suspect in this tragic shooting is in custody tonight. if he is arrested and charged, a court appearance could take place as early as next week. back to you. >> trace: what more do we know about christopher sullivan's condition. >> he is he in critical condition in a local hospital. is he waiting for two bulls to be removed. his mother suzanne who has been at his bedside since this tragic shooting. her son is hanging in physically. he is on 100% life support. he can move his head from side to side and respond through blinking and nodding. apparently he was able to ask what happened to him. the family did tell him. he asked why and then closed his eyes, trace? the soldier's family, anita, how are they holding up. >> the mother suzanne has spoken openly about the fact that the family is having a very hard time dealing with this. christopher is the oldest son in a single parent home. according to the "l.a. times," he always made it his duty to support the family, off sending home his entire paycheck from the army so his mom and his siblings would have enough money for food and clothes. and think about it to survive a brutal attack like he did in afghanistan that killed six fellow soldiers only to be tragically injured at home is a lot for any family to take. tonight they are hoping for justice. >> trace: and at christmas time. anita vogel live for us in los angeles. police in texas working to figure out why a man dressed as santa massacred his family. according to officials in the dallas area suburb of grapevine, the family had just finished unwrapping their christmas gifts. that's when cops say a relative in a santa claus costume opened fire and then killed himself. the family's neighbors left struggling to understand. >> quite terrified that this could happen less than 25 feet from where you sleep. >> there hasn't been any crime in this complex that they know of, not even a break-in. so to hear something like, this it's just shocking. >> police say they responded to the home after someone called 911 and hung up. when they arrived, cops found four women and three men dead. one of them the shooter. we're told the victims ranged in age from 18 to 60. officials say they won't release the victims' ids until autopsies are complete. and a fox urgent now and three people are dead after a medical helicopter crashed in florida. about an hour south of jacksonville. it killed the pilot as well as two members of a transplant team from jacksonville's mayo clinic, including the team's surgeon. that's him right there on the left. we're told the team was on its way to retrieve a heart from a transplant at the time. >> we have set a perimeter around the crash site and the f.a.a. should be here shortly to do the investigation. we have got our investigators on site. we have had an helicopter up in the air to take aerial photographers of the scene. until the f.a.a. gets here we are kind of on hold. >> trace: the national transportation safety board also on hand to figure out exactly what caused that helicopter to plummet from the sky. ryan smyth from waws action news in jacksonville live at the scene in clay county, florida. ryan, we understand this was supposed to be a pretty routine trip. >> trace, that trip attempting to stabilize in the end claimed three lives. that helicopter crashed in these woods behind me about 150 yards back. and i can tell you it's still a very smoky scene here as multiple fires erupted burning through about 10 acres following the crash. deputies discovered the wreckage around 12:30 today. two mayo clinic employees along with a pilot were on their way to pick up a heart at the university hospital. now that heart cannot be used because its liability has expired. i have learned tonight that this area is covered with thick woods which i'm told is owned and operated by a local hunting club. and deputies now say that the f.a.a., a team from miami is on their way tonight to begin the investigation as to what caused this chopper to crash. trace? >> ryan smyth from waws fox 30 action news there in jacksonville, ryan, thank you. well, fox news is america's election headquarters and we are now just eight days from the iowa caucuses. the first in the nation presidential contest. one that could set the tone for the months of campaigning ahead. now that christmas is behind them, the candidates are ramping up their campaigns again for a final push to secure support before the caucuses. the latest real clear politics poll average shows texas congressman ron paul in the lead in iowa. he is in a statistical tie with the former massachusetts governor mitt romney. and the others not all that far behind. it's also worth pointing out all this fussing and fighting is over support from a tiny fraction of the country's population. but that population does have a decent record of at least predicting the overall outcome because since 1976, the winner of the iowa caucuses has won the republic nomination half of the time. carl cameron with the news live in des moines, iowa. carl, set the stage for iowa's big moment if you will. >> hi, trace. well, eight days from now if the first in the nation caucuses will begin. this has been a much quieter caucus campaign than anything we have seen in the last 35 years. despite all of the hundreds of town hall meetings. the millions of dollars of attack ads that have been running. despite all of the campaigns that's been happening, it's been substantially quieter. contest anywhere from 120 caucus goers. in a state of 3 million that's a tiny slice. explains why the candidates work on their get out the vote efforts. still ba banter back and forth a and call one another names. take as back seat to trying to find people. 120,000 people divided in a seven candidate race means any candidate could potentially win with as few as 40 or 50,000 votes, trace. that's not enough to win a mayor's race. this is a tremendous effort. the caucuses take place at 7:00 p.m. a week from now. when that happens, each campaign will have five minutes to give a speech. that will take an hour. then the folks who show up will have to do write in for their choices. it's laborsome process. those who could do show up to get the word out wins the race. >> trace: romney and paul are in a battle for first place. >> they are. these are the two candidates who campaigned and competed in iowa before. ron paul and mitt romney were borat on in the ballot. he romney came in second place to mike huckabee in that race. he has maintained a large percentage if not all of the support he had four years ago. for mitt romney this could be a surprise. he spent a tremendous amount of time down playing expectations in iowa. and the apparent fall by newt gingrich in the polls and his lack of organization means romney could do well. ron paul on the other hand has very, very strong support. both with younger voters and the colleges and universities across iowa as well as with seniors no make up -- hot 65 is the median age for caucus goers. ron paul does have strength there as well. >> trace: what about the huckabee supporters this time around, carl? >> david lee miller live in new york tonight. david lee, thank you. important agreement in the works between the united nations and the iraqi government to relocate thousands of iranian exiles. they are part of a group that's giving the united states valuable intelligence on iran. that group is known as the m.e.k., its members now at a refugee camp outside baghdad near iran's border. secretary of state hillary clinton praised relocation plan saying it could include a temporary stay at camp liberty. the former military base near baghdad. interesting descontinue nation while the mek has helped the u.s. in the past, it is on the state department's list of terrorist organizations. we are also hearing reports of a rocket attack on the camp hours after the agreement was announced. jennifer, what you can tell us with this group?
