commandering lead over the challenger baker dwind to a one-point margin in the latest "boston globe" poll. presence of a third candidate complicates the race but one of several contests the republican governors association has in its sights. >> i will be disappointed if we don't get at least 30 republican governors out of the 50. california is a very close race, where meg whitman leads by a point or two and trails by a point or two. if you take pennsylvania, ohio, michigan, wisconsin, illinois, iowa, they all have democratic governors today. and every one either the republican is ahead or the race is too close to call. >> reporter: state legislators will spend next year redrawing the state congressional district line, process in which 39 governors place on direct roll. sometimes wielding veto power. >> if one party controls both houses of the legislature and the governor, they're in position to redistrict house seats in states with numerous seats. in a way that tends to benefit the party. >> the dga is on offense and we plan to win. >> the democrats are parlaying huge contributions from public sector labor unions, even as the republicans rely on corporate donations like the $1 million contribution news corp., the parent company of this network made to the r.g.a. and they point to state like maryland where incumbent democrat mark nomally is favored to win the rematch with the former governor urlech. and new york from cuomo has a large lead over businessman carl paladino as cases where democrats are succeeding in making all politics local, not national. >> the postmortems of this election were written this summer before the voters were engaged. the voters are paying attention now. the movement toward democrat we're seeing of both of that engagement and the electorate desire to reward results. >> reporter: the importance of the government races and the redistricting process through the final two years of president obama's term is hardly lost on the white house. accordingly, democratic sources confirm to molly line today that the president will travel to boston on october 16 to stump and raise money for governor patrick, his friend and former harvard law school classmate. bret? >> bret: thank you. now to senate races and probably the most unusual one in the country in alaska. the current republican senator is battling old allies in the g.o.p., the democrats, the tea party, and even the alphabet. correspondent dan springer reports on a host of challenges for lisa murkowski. >> reporter: the tea party express took to the airwaves in anchorage last night to raise money for republican candidate joe miller so it can fund more commercials like this one. attacking the g.o.p. incumbent lisa murkowski who lost in the primary and is now running a write-in candidacy. unlike in the primary when she all but ignored the tea party, this time murkowski is fighting back, calling the ad vile and filled with lies. >> lisa murkowski and her campaign is not going to sit back and let the lies go unchallenged. >> reporter: the commercial accuses murkowski of trying to bully her way to the ballot after he lost the primary. >> then she tried to manipulate the libertarian party. >> reporter: in a letter to a tv station she urged them to not run the ad and then have lawsuit if they did. >> it's my purpose to give all sides and give equal access to all candidates who want their message broadcast to the people of alaska. >> reporter: the tea party express that promised to spend at least $100,000 on the alaska race stands by the ad. >> no, we are not playing dirty politics. we're focussed on joe miller and now we're under attack. >> reporter: rasmussen report had miller with a 15-point lead over murkowski and 16-point advantage over mcadams. the mayor from cisco while raising money has yet to get much traction. another poll shows a closer race. conventional wisdom going in is murkowski in the race would split the republican vote to the benefit of the democrat scott mcadams but one pollster says something else is happening that murkowski is doing very well among independents and democrats because she is convincing them she is the only one to stop joe miller. everyone acknowledges that is a difficult race to poll because the best-known candidate isn't even on the ballot. bret? >> bret: dan springer live in anchorage tonight. thank you. delaware republican candidate christine o'donnell is trying to assure voters she is not a practitioner of the black arts. she said 11 years ago as a teenager she dabbled in witchcraft. now she is doing damage control in her first ad campaign since her primary win. >> i'm not a witch. i'm nothing you've heard. i'm you. none of us are perfect, but none of us can be happy with what we see around us. >> bret: linda mcmahon was hoping to work magic monday night and put a dent in a ten-point lead by democrat richard blumenthal. it was if first showdown of a debate double-header in the state. chief political correspondent carl cameron is in hartford again this evening. >> reporter: trailing in the polls, connecticut republican u.s. senate candidate linda mcmahon established herself as the aggressor before the debate with richard blumenthal by launching a new attack ad on her opponent's claims of having served in vietnam. he apologized again on stage. >> it was not intentional but that's no excuse. >> reporter: eneither candidates made a knock-out punch or made a major gaffe. blumenthal said mcman opposes minimum wage now. >> that's a lie. you know it's a lie. i never said it and it's in your ad and boy that's just wrong. take it off the table. >> reporter: predominant issue is jobs and the economy and that sparked the most heated exchange. >> i know about how government can help preserve jobs. >> government, government, government. government does not create jobs. it's simple how you create jobs. entrepreneur takes a risk. >> i am not going to be an entrepreneur as a senator. >> reporter: tonight's debate is the governor's office for connecticut. both sides play to it aggressively. >> foley took over the largest textile mill and laid off workers and drove the company to bankruptcy. he pocketed $20 million. >> stan malloy say he created job bus the official records says they lost 13,000 jobs since 2000. misrepresenting tom foley's record and caught in a lie about his own. >> stanford democratic mayor malloy has a slight lead in the poll over tom foley. the governor's office is up for grabs because republicans incumbent governor jodie rel is stepping aside having said in the 2006 bid she would not seek re-election this time. with half a dozen democratic incumbent governors considered at risk across the country, here in blue connecticut, democrats hope to buck the trend. dan malloy may be one of the few exceptions with an opportunity to oust a currently republican seat and whip it for the democrats. bret? >> bret: we should point out carl is moderating tonight's debate and that will be streaming live at 7:00 at foxnews.com. good luck. we'll see you later. >> reporter: thank you. >> bret: california democratic gubernatorial candidate jerry brown may have broken the law in a visit to cuba in 2000. there is a report that brown then the mayor of oakland shared mojitos and four-hour limousine ride with fidel castro. his travel was reportedly arranged by a former c.i.a. double agent considered a traitor in the u.s. that may have violated the law mandating american citizens use government authorized travel agency when going to cuba. brown's office insists the trip was legal and a newspaper article at the time reported that brown was given clearance by the state department. although fox has not yet been able to iptndependently confirm that. let's get perspective on senate races from brit hume. good evening. >> hi, bret. >> bret: start in nevada, brit. this race is really heating up, obviously. you have sharron angle, the republican out there with a lead in the latest fox poll, a lead that is 49% to harry reid 46%. that's within the margin of error. what strikes you about the poll? >> the interesting number is none of the above, 1%. i'll explain in a moment why 1% of none of the above is important. this is a race in which neither candidate ranks well with the voters. if you look at how sharron angle is regarded by the voters you see 53% of nevada voters think she is too extreme. so you think how can she be ahead? well, look at harry reid's job approval number in this same poll. harry reid disapproved of by 56% of voters and the same number when asked the question has he been in office too long, the same number, here it is, 56-40% say yes, indeed, he has. go back to 1%. the option, none of the above is actually on the ballot in nevada. >> bret: someone could walk in and say not harry reid -- >> they may not like reid and may not like ankle and they will vote for none of the above. that's a real threat to angle's candidacy. the number is down to 1%. may be the key number. the lead in the margin of error, one of the biggest threats to her campaign has been removed if the undecided factor or the none of the above factor has decided almost nothing. >> bret: turn now to west virginia. the senate race there, the incumbent democratic governor joe manchin is trailing the republican opponent john raese. joe manchin is very popular in west virginia. >> exactly. it makes this race a puzzle. how can raese be up five points when you look at the job approval rating for the incumbent governor joe manchin running for the senate. look at this. 66% approval rating. this is a state with association with president obama is a burden. his job approval rating in the state is terrible. 65% disapprove. people were asked why would they vote in west virginia as far as the administration policies. 60%, fully 60% said they were going to be voting to express opposition to the policy. that number explains why joe manchin, a popular governor is down in this race. >> bret: thanks as always. we will tell you why the national football league is getting involved in a senate campaign. that's later in the grapevine. straight ahead, the latest intelligence >> bret: in international headlines, iranian officials say a western plot to sabotage the nuclear reactor is responsible for a computer worm that attacked laptops of several employees at the plant. the foreign ministry said the alleged plan will not stop or delay nuclear activities. five explosions have rocked southern afghanistan kandahar district in the past two nights. at least two explosions today killed at least eight people, wounding 22. three blasts targeted a office monday killing two afghan officers and woulding several others. afghan and nato forces are engaged to drive out militants from the area. man who tried to detonate a car bomb in times square last may has been sentenced to life in prison. pakistani immigrant faisal shahzad said today in the hearing, "the defeat of the u.s. is imminent." also today, french police arrested at least 11 people in sweeps against suspected islamic militant groups. catherine herridge is here on the latest connection between the threat in europe and intelligence in the u.s. >> reporter: multiple sources confirm to fox on sunday a joint bulletin by homeland security and f.b.i. sent to the local and state law enforcement in connection with a threat picture in europe. at this time, the intelligence is focussed on western europe, but a u.s. connection or target has not been ruled out. sources say the bulletin cites three previous attacks in europe, including the madrid commuter bombing in 2004 where operatives stuffed bag packs with explosives, a similar attack the following year where london buses were hit and glasgow bombing in 2007. current and former intelligence officials say small attacks like these are part of the emerging threat picture. with confirmation that the drone picture intensified with drones to ramp up the agency's fire power among the afghan boarder with pakistan, long-time operative kashmiri and his connection to the plot are under the microscope. he worked with headly who did reconnaissance work for the mumbai commando style attacks in 2008. according to the court can papers, kashmiri backed similar attack on the danish newspaper that published cartoon of muhammad with body of a dog. "kashmiri told the defendant he could provide manpower for the operation. he told headly to meet with the european contact and relate instructions it should be suicide attack and think should prepare martyrdom videos beforehand." the attack never happened but the intelligence community is focussed on kashmiri because he is plotting beyond the region. >> there is concern that there may be teams active in europe and still may carry out some operation. >> tonight an investigative report in a leading pakistani newspaper is focussing on a group called the islamic movement of uzbekistan. they say at least five german hi jaddists travelled to the tribal area of pakistan in march to train with the al-qaeda affiliate. the report says the three men and two women are part of the european threat stream. bret? >> bret: we know you will follow it. thank you. a former traitor at one of france's elite banks has been ordered to pay the firm more than $6.5 billion with a "b," in damages. he was convicted of forgery, breach of trust and unauthorized computer use for covering up trades worth ten times that much. at his annual salary around $37,000 a year it would take him more than 175,000 years to pay that off. we will have the amazing story of an american who saved 22 fellow soldiers in afghanistan. that's coming up a bit later. up next, the white house warms to the idea of solar power again. >> bret: service-oriented companies grew slightly faster. they're the prominent job generator. stocks rebounded today. the dow was up 193-1/2. the s&p 500 gained 24. the nasdaq picked up 55. the administrator of the $20 billion b.p. compensation fund for gulf oil spill says it has been inundated with questionable documentation, inflated claims and cases of outright fraud. meanwhile, members of the federal panel investigating the initial explosion say rig owner transocean is blocking efforts to get critical documents and an important witness. the effort to make america less reliant on oil behind a symbolic gesture today. at the most famous address. white house correspondent mike emanuel reports on a push to reenergize the alternative energy movement. >> reporter: the obama administration announced it's putting solar panels on the first family living quarters. >> they're reliable, ready to install in homes throughout the country. >> calls the white house a simple of freedom, democracy and -- >> it should also be as symbol of america's commitment to a clean energy future. >> reporter: solutions such as solar energy, critics say, don't make economic sense. >> obama's projection of the cost of solar electricity show it's four time expensive as conventional forms. the higher cost of energy is not good for consumers business or the economy. >> reporter: white house solar energy history dates back to 1979 when president carter had a solar water heater installed for west wing offices. he's remembered for wearing a cardigan sweater and asking americans to save oil turning down the thermostat and driving less. president reagan removed the solar panels when the roof was being repair and oil prices plummeted. then president bush brought back solar power for mansion and heating water for the white house pool. since take office, president obama toured facile theties like this to make case or clean energy economy to fight climate change. cap-and-trade appears to be dead in congress, particularly since margins are expected to change in the mid-term elections. he told "rolling stone" that "climate change has potential to have devastating effects on people around the globe and we have to do something about it." when asked if he would be willing to throw the weight of the presidency behind this effort, mr. obama said, "i'm committed to making sure we get an energy party that makes sense for the country and help us grow at the same time as it deals with climate change in a serious way." some experts suggest the president may make the symbolic move hoping to appease his base but say the solar effort is not a serious attempt to address climate change. bret? >> bret: mike emanuel live on the north lawn. thank thanks. the townspeople of king, north carolina, are drawing a line in the sand and contesting city-order removal of the christian flag from a veterans memorial. chad tucker reports while the residents are fighting city hall, it tonight, never quit. stand up with us. despite the battle, let's win it together. >> they voted to take down the christian flag after the aclu and another group threatened the city with a lawsuit. a lawsuit estimated to cost two or three hundred thousand dollars to defend, that's money the city does not have. >> aclu would bankrupt the city. if there were a court case, we could not pay it. >> throughout town, the christian flag now flies. almost everywhere. from businesses to homes to vehicle. local stores trying to keep stock. this is as veterans keep around the clock vigile over the temporary christian flag now flying at the veterans memorial. >> how many more god-given privileges are we going to have taken away from us, not only in this city, but in this country before we stand up and say enough is enough? >> that was chad tucker, of fox affiliate wghp reporting. speaking of flags, the n.f.l. is throwing one at a veteran democratic senator. we'll explain in the grapevine. former top democrat has advice for president obama about his teleprompter. >> bret: now some fresh pickings from the political grapevine. the n.f.l. is flagging wisconsin senator russ fiingold latest political ad that uses unauthorized clip of randy moss pretending to moon the green bay crowd in 2004. feingold says the moss celebration and others are similar to how his challenger seems to be declaring victory prematurely. polls show republican ron johnson with a lead over feingold. the n.f.l. says the league did not license the footage and contacted the senator's campaign about removing it. a former presidential democratic candidate is blaming president obama's teleprompter for recent struggles he has had connecting with voters. walter mondale who was also vice president under jimmy carter says he uses these idiot boards to read speeches in television and i think he loses the connection he needs emotionally with american voters. mondale by the way lost the 1984 election to president ronald reagan. mondale picked up 13 electoral votes winning only d.c. and his home state of minnesota. finally, italy's prime minister is getting flak for an off-color joke he made on his 74th birthday last week. the head of rome's jewish community joined the vatican newspaper and others blasting silvio berlusconi for his quip about jews, money, and the holocaust. berlusconi sort of apologized, maintaining what he said wasn't a sin or an offense, just a joke. the bad taste was in those who published it. this is not the first time berlusconi's mouth got himself in trouble. he described the president-elect obama once as young, happenedsome and even tanned and has joked about hitler returning to power. back at home on a much more serious note. wednesday, president obama will in the races in october than we spent in all of 2006. make no mistake about it. the d.g.a. is on offense. and we plan to win. >> 37 governors races across the country this election season. and they are verier important. to tell us why, break down a couple of the races, let's bring in the panel. stephen hayes, for "weekly standard." mara liasson, national political correspondent of national public radio. syndicated columnist charles krauthammer. mara, let's start why they're so important. >> governors races are incredibly important. especially two years before a presidential race. governors are the field from which presidential nominations are taken. a lot of governors become the nominees. this year we have a lot of contested races, races that might switch from "d" to "r" in very important electoral states in the midwest, florida and california. big electoral prizes. governors control a lot of the elec central political machinery in their states and they can really help or hurt a nominee. >> bret: redistricting for congressional districts also happens coming up. steve, you have in some places state legislators that would change hand and the governor's office depending how it shapes up. >> absolutely. it's governing and redistricting and policy of 2012. and we look at things from the national perspective but if you talk about the states with a severe budget crisis, how governor approaches these can set the political environment for the election in 2012 in a crucial way. >> bret: look at a couple of races. at the bottom of our list is ohio. that race, john kasick the republican, former congressman and former fox news contributor has a lead over democrat ted strickland. there you see it. it appears to have closed in the latest polls a little bit. but this race in ohio important. the president, the vice president had visited there 18 times in the past 18 months. >> they have been there so often that either of them could take out a driver's license in ohio. ohio is critical state. if you are a democrat, you probably can't win the presidency if you lose ohio. presidency election six years ago hinged on ohio. so they know it. it's interesting because obama and the vice president as you say have been there. in the polls, about the how people want to vote in the governorship. they asked independents, likely independent voters who are going to republican heavily would obama visit increase or decrease your chance of supporting the democratic nominee strickland? increase 6%. decrease can 39%. so it gives you an index of how much the democrats do not want to nationalize this election. and how it may not actually help to have obama in the state and wisconsin, in the senatorial race. russ feingold won't be seen within 100 yards of obama. >> bret: although he went to on the last one. >> he had to. after sitting out the couple of them, it's obvious and it looks bad. generally speaking you want a local race. with kasitch in the latest poll he has a nine-point spread. it looks to me like states like ohio and michigan, midwest, which are hurting economically, i think the democrats have a really, really tough road. >> bret: i should point out these are the real clear politics average of polls, the recent polls. new polls may have moved races a little bit. go to florida, and this race is interesting down there. rick scott is the republican nominee. he appears to be opening up a lead. he is spending a lot of his money on the campaign against democrat alex sink. >> this is funny. this is a potential pick-up for democrats. they were hopeful about florida, electoral state. rick has the party in a divisive primary tend democrats are hoping that some of the wounds wouldn't be heal and alex sink has a chance. sink is doing well. close race, closer than people thought. it seems that scott has pulled ahead. but sink has been making a run for it. i can't think of another state in the country where a democrat has a chance to pick up the governorship. >> bret: talk about the white house wanting to focus on one race. florida, when it comes to presidential possibilities, when you talk about electoral votes -- >> you can't think of anything much more important than that. >> bret: than florida. turn to california, steve. we have seen a lot of news and meg whitman under fire for the housekeeper she hired. now today, a story out about jerry brown possibly going illegally to cuba and drinking mojitos with fidel castro. his campaign had this response. makes me wonder if meg knows she is not running for governor of florida, from his press secretary. saying it was not illegal trip. but accusations are flying. >> it's amazing when you look at the serious budget crisis in california we are having a debate over a nanny and a potential trip. if you look at the last week, analyze a week, meg whitman's campaign is flown offstride. they spent time not on the offense and state of california where she made a good case on her own behalf. so instead she is talking about the nanny and now we may talk about trips to cuba. >> in san francisco, having a beer with fidel is a plus. >> bret: turn to new york. interesting race there. the real clear politics average in new york has andrew cuomo with a lead. 14 points over paladino, the republican. what about this race? >> paladino at the beginning of the general election had an outliar poll which showed him six points behind. then he had a meltdown on camera with a reporter. that enforced the image of a guy who is not contained, slightly out of control. it didn't help him. not sure he can recover. this is after a heavily democratic state. cuomo is heir to a political dynasty. the father was governor. he's been the heir apparent. this is one state that it will be really hard. rick lazio, paladino opponents among republicans was taken off the ballot. he was on the conservative line. had he stayed on it, it would have split the vote a little bit and might have had an effect in a close election. he's now off the ballot and it looks like it's not close anyway. >> bret: four weeks is an eternity in politics. and what looks like a blow-out in the making, rick snider is up by 21 points thanned is the average of recent poll over the democrat. michigan has a high, high unemployment rate there. >> i don't think any democrat thinks they have much of a hope. michigan is like new york state. michigan is interesting because it's one of the states in the midwest, we could have put pennsylvania in the same category and ohio. these are important, very important region for democrats. the great lakes region. where they built the presidential hopes on the electoral votes. looks like one democratic governor after another is falling. >> snider is interesting candidate because he is running as a businessman. he was a successful businessman. he's not unlike rick scott in florida or ron johnson in wisconsin. an interesting prototype saying this is what we did in business and why we'll succeed in government. >> bret: he says he is one tough nerd. log on to the home page foxnews.com/specialreport for a web exclusive by colonel solar panel, climate change legislation? >> i think the solar panels are symbolic of what the white house is trying to do. in some way it's symbolic of what the white house intended, it's good and we should do this. in some ways it's symbolic in the way the white house didn't intend, they cost more. the white house was pressured by environmentalists a month ago to do this. they licial reacted coolly, didn't agree to do it and after an outcry that most didn't hear but those on the left heard louded clear, the white house caved. i don't think it's much more complicated than that. looking forward, the president wants this to -- he wants to drive the policy debate on energy. he has lost that opportunity. he didn't do it initially. he didn't do it well initially. i think it's far more likely we'll talk about drilling in anwar this time next year than we will be talking about cap-and-trade. >> bret: mara, legislatively cap-and-trade is dead. >> yes, and he doesn't say it wasn't. in other words he's talking about doing something. he even said to "rolling stone" maybe we do it in smaller chunks. i don't see solar panels on the white house as being anything signalling something wrong. as a matter of fact george w. bush had solar energy at the white house. the republican policy on energy used to be everything. do everything, drill, have nuclear, do green energy. let's do everything we can to reduce our reliance on fossil fuel. there was a time, i think cap and trade proved to be the wrong way to go. but there was a time when people thought there could be a compromise if you put all those things together. >> bret: on the rolling stone interview, he also said this -- "it's hard to make progress on issues in the midst of a huge economic crisis, because the natural inclination around the world is to say it may be a huge problem but right now what is really a big problem is 10% unemployment and what is a really big problem is our businesses can't get loans. that diverted attention from what i consider to be an urgent priority." >> i hope it's acknowledgment the economy has to come first and next year his legislative agenda puts economy number one at all times. >> bret: is this a tough message, this quote, charles, for moderate democrats ahead of an election in november? >> it is. obama has done the op to is it of putting employment and the economy ahead of the issues. on drilling for example. he imposed moratorium on drilling in the gulf that was destroying what was left of the gulf economy and it's gratuitous. it's not helping us in terms of cleaning up the air. it's simply harming our industry. he reverted, remember, he made a small opening before the spill to have a slight relaxation of the moratorium on drilling in the atlantic and pacific and in alaska. of course, all of that is retracted as a result of the gulf spill. he took advantage of that. he's going in the opposite way. our problem is that we are -- it's a national security issue, and it's also an economic issue. we are shipping a third of a trillion dollars overseas on imported oil, which we don't have to do because we have oil here. but democrats have insisted for two decades and more i'm not drilling. that's anwar and alaska, national petroleum ereserve in alaska, drilling on the coast. natural gas and nuclear energy. this administration democrats are wedded to a policy of solar and wind, which are sweet and nice, and theoretical but they're extremely uneconomical. >> bret: so you're pro-solar panel on the white house? >> i'm not against it. it's a nice accoutrement but not solution for energy problem. >> bret: that's it for the panel. stay tuned for a weather report unlike any other. >> bret: finally tonight, television news is fast-paced. you have to be on your toes because sometimes the camera comes on without warning. so when local news teams head to their weather centers, sometimes this happens. ♪ >> this is eyewitness news, the news leader.
