[ applause ] well, this last week has been a tough week in some ways for me. recent headlines from an interview that i had from a speaking engagement at the college of new jersey. here is one of the headlines. from the student newspaper said, "huckabee rips steele, romney and lgbt activists." from this publication called "the perspectiperspective." from that, before the week was over, the "associated press" was saying, "huckabee likens gay marriage to incest and polygamy." oh, let me tell you. this has been one of those weeks where i have come to understand once again why a lot of people, mra particularly conservatives, have a real problem with the mainstream media. this story went from a college paper to a bunch of pluggers and then all the way to the mainstream media. one problem, a lot of people never bothered to check out what was said. i challenged that publication who did the interview. put the unedited tape out there for the world to see. well, they put an edited version. that didn't have all of it there. it was a real lesson in terms of what happens in the world of new media. let me mention a couple of things. the interview was going to be a simple interview. the young man doing interview was focussed on same-sex marriage. i made clear my position, which is the same position of barack obama, hillary clinton and joe biden, that marriage still means one man, one woman for life. we shouldn't change the definition of it. and i mentioned that the burden of proof is not on those of us who believe in tradition of marriage but on those of us who wish to change it. once we have changed the definition to something that it never meant before, then we just need to remember if somebody else says i'd like for my lifestyle or my belief system to be accommodated, there is no ending. i did not say same-sex marriage was the same as incest or drug use or whole host of things i supposedly said. i said once you change any definition of an institution, in order to accommodate particular lifestyles, then people with other kind of lifestyles have every right to say will you accommodate mine as well? my lesson in all of this was we need to remember that in the day of world -- in the day of new media, you are your own editor. just because you read it on the internet, just because someone said in a blog, it may not be 100% accurate. i know that will come as a big surprise to you. now, because i challenge the accuracy and voracity of some of the information, a lot of people say you shouldn't have taken on the young student. let me tell you something. if you want to play big league baseball you have to be willing to not only take your shots on the mound but also at the plate. he threw one at my head and i'll say this to any reporter. when you throw a big fastball at my head on purpose, don't be surprised if i charge the mound. that's just the way it's going to be. that's my view and i welcome yours.
