bill o'reilly hope to see you next time the spin stops here because we are looking out for you. ♪ ♪ >> sean: the republican party is rising in america. even with recent gop gains it appears democrats are turning a blind eye to this unmistakeable moment. they are sticking to their tired talking about points about how republicans don't have a strong leader and infighting could split the gop vote. but on politicsdaily.com, democrats are ignoring the cold hard facts. in recent months the gop has scored several victories in new jersey, virginia. we saw elects of mcdonnell and cristy. in massachusetts a republican elected to the senate in that state for the first time since 1972. there's evidence that suggest this trend will continue. according to a poll president obama now holds only a five point lead over republicans on the economy, health care reform and terrorism. since the spring and summer the president's lead over republicans on those issues has dropped dramatically. a 37% decline on the economy. 28% decline on health care. 21% drop on fighting terror. with difficult times ahead for democrats it is not surprising that some of their strongest members are running scared. yesterday's news out of indiana that evan bayh would not seek a third term stunned democrats. today he was asked what his plans are for the future. >> i'm gonna what we call in indiana in basketball i'm going to play until the final second ticks off the clock. then think about what is next. if i could create one job in the private sector by helping to grow a business that would be one more than congress has created in the last six months. >> sean: that sums up how ineffective the president has been by putting americans back to work. carl rove is with us, welcome back. >> thank you sean. >> sean: listen to that last line if i could create one job in the private sector that would be one more than congress has created in the last six months that's a strong repudiation. >> yeah, you could probably say created in the last year. we are approaching the anniversary of the stimulus package. recent polls show that it was 9% of the american people think the stimulus package has helped create jobs. >> sean: why do you think he's so angry? maybe i'm reading too much into that seems there was a lot of anger behind that statement that he was taking a shot at the leadership of his party. we are told he didn't inform harry reid. what do you think he was saying there? >> we've had an interesting drama play out here. news reports say he informed the white house some number of days ago that explains why when dan coates said he was going to run to regain his seat in the senate the democrats unloaded everything they had on him. i think it was a last-ditch attempt by the white house to say we are going to keep him from getting in the race. you evan bayh stay to hold the seat that your father once held. there's a lot of anger there. there's a moderate centrist. he has been dissed by the white house on things like spending and deficit reduction. also passed over for the vice presidential nomination. we had the young senator from illinois who picks the old geyser from delaware in joe biden and evan bayh got passed over. >> sean: i call him the old geyser and worse that's nothing. you brought the karl rove board with you tonight. you did a little analysis. you compared the numbers from '94 leading into that election to today and found some interesting -- go ahead. >> this may be another reason why evan bayh bailed out. if you look the right direction 24 today 23. president's job approval in '94 today 52. congressional approval 32 in '94 and it is 26 today. reelect congressman 32 then, 36 today. not good. generic in the ballot two points for the republicans tied in the gallup today up to eight points in rasmussen for the republican. which party do you trust more in february at the same time 14%, -- 14 point advantage for the democrats today six point advantage as you pointed out earlier. democrats net favorability was four points for the democrats favorables outnumbered their unfavorables by four points today the republicans are even. what we've got is a set of numbers that eerily look like they did in 1994 when the democrats lost eight seats in the senate and 54 in the house. i think they are on the way to losing as many as nine seats in the senate based on the candidates that are in the rays today if you include massachusetts. >> sean: i announced on my radio show today i have a new book coming out. conservative victory defeating obama's radical agenda. one of the chapters i wrote was about to be or not to be, do we need a third party? president reagan answered that question in '74 and '77 his answer was reneed a new republican party he used that term. are you concerned, michael steele met with the tea party people today -- are you concerned about the tea party movement breaking off like apparently they may be doing in nevada? >> yeah, i am a little bit. because in nevada they could be the spoiler that reelects harry reid. there's a bigger problem for the tea party movement it becomes less effective the more political it becomes. i'm going to write my column about it this week in the "wall street journal". i think the tea party has come on to the american scene with huge power and influence because it has been an political democrats, independents and republicans together concerned about deficit, debt, spending and the power of government when it becomes identified as the appendage of one party it loses some influence, independents and democrats tend to be lessen enthusiastic about being part of it. if it becomes a political party it splits the vote concerned about these issue us a and probably elects more who don't agree with tea party members. biggest influence as a philosophical movement that holds the feet of all politicians to its fire and holds every one accountable like the pro life and second amendment rights movement did by having allies and friends in both parties. >> sean: the president is trying to entice the republicans to be part of this health care summit, deficit reduction group. are the republicans being set-up? is there danger if they participate in what the president is trying to get them to do? >> of course there's danger. there's bigger danger if they don't par 'tis is about politics. -- don't participate. this is about politics. the president met in a bipartisan meeting on health care march 5th of last year now february of this year before they have their second meeting so this is clearly politics. they ought to be ready to blow the whistle on misstatements by the president. they ought confidence that comes from knowing they are win the argument and use this to layout their vision as american people say those are good ideas why haven't we heard about them before? here with us stuart varney and former white house press secretary dana perino. do any of you smoke? >> no. >> sean: do any of you drink? >> yes. >> sean: i can give you the milk if you prefer. >> i'm lactose intolerant. >> sean: poisoned you with -- it is funny. taxing gummi bears and sour patch kids, they are taxing food. >> people are getting nickeled and dimed to death. they overspend in the good times, create new programs, expand entitlement programs in the down times they have to either cut spending or raise taxes. in some ways they come up with this cockamamy things i love they are going to tax yoga classes. a tax on personal hygiene, yoga and on the bags. all i can imagine is those are really stressed out people who are carrying armfuls of groceries. >> what you are surrounded with sean are items which we consume. they are all being taxed this is a consumption tax at the state level. wait for it, it is coming to the federal level. they have to gain money from some place. they can't tax income much more it is going to be a consumption tax. >> in is not a tax on the rich. -- this is not a tax on the rich. >> no everyone. >> sean: isn't this a backdoor way, i'm not going to raise taxes. he's agnostic about his promise. >> of course it is. it is going to be a value added like in europe, national sales tax, gas tax, a tax on consumption which we all pay to raise massive amounts of money. it has to happen. >> the president has a serious problem in a cbs poll only 12% of americans believe they got an income tax cut under the president's plan. the reason i think they feel that way is because in their pocketbooks they are getting nickeled and dimed. >> sean: is the federal government and economic policies are so bad it filters down to the states state coffers are suffering. >> that's how you got the nebraska deal the cornhusker kickback. >> the reason they are going up at state level because the state cannot afford the lavish pensions they promised. at the federal level we are spending up a storm the treasury is empty, these deficits are growing, they are now a major political issue, they've got to get revenue from somewhere they can't tax income any more it's got to be consumption. >> i disagree i don't think they will pass one this year. >> it is coming. >> not this year and not next year if republicans do well in 2010. >> i think we agree cap and trade is dead. built into the budget is the assumption we get cap and trade and get 600 billion dollars worth of revenue for the government over the next 10 years. we are not going to get that, we have to tax consumption to get it. >> sean: california is near bankruptcy. there's an article in the "new york post" new york state tax revenues implode in the wake of taxing the wealthy. new jersey the star ledger, residents fleeing, high tax new jersey they removed 70 billion dollars in wealth from the state of new jersey. i mean, these states, -- the few people that are left they going to nickel and dime them every loose cent they have? >> you have to pay consumption taxes it is not like income incomes that you can avoid by moving or putting income into a different year. you consume anything it will be taxed. you pay that tax, you can't run. >> sean: in new york, i'm not a smoker somebody on my staff is answer i offered him a deal to quit. okay this is $10 a pack in new york. my father used to send me to get him a pack i was 50 cents, not long ago, i'm a young guy. the point is, people how do they function? [ talking over each other ] >> for example, tax the cigarettes more so they can help pay for health care. but it doesn't go to health care. basically putting up taxes on the people they are are -- they are trying to help. supposed to be a green tax, baloney it doesn't do anything for the environment. >> sean: stuart i'm going to save you five cents next time you go to the store. >> what a guy. >> sean: this is what the tea party movement is about we are throwing tea in the harbor, people aren't taking it any more, are they? did you say all these things? >> i tell you what, let me paint you a picture media likes to cut off what you are saying they didn't go on with the full sentence. i said the rest of the sentence in a paragraph after, let me paint you a picture here. it took nine years to get custody of my son. i got custody of my boy six months prior to me meeting barack obama. all i had in my thoughts were i got custody, great job, i'm about to make payments to my boss to buy his company, i was living the american dream. so yes, john mccain and barack obama in essence screwed up that life. screwed up my life that is going overboard a little i was very much looking forward to that life. but i embrace what has compromise way. i've been able to get out and encourage americans to get involved and take responsibility to being an american because there is a responsibility being born in this country civic duty is a real thing. >> sean: back to this statement thank you out of barack obama, which turned out to be a -- pretty i guess interesting moment, because it was a preview of coming an attractions that reveals his philosophy. you stepped into that you decided to ask him the question. you decided to go out on the campaign trail with john mccain. so i just want to make sure you don't think mccain ruined your life you made these decisions freely on your own, right? >> yes, freely on my own. it is important that americans get involved and go further. gone back to my life once i asked that question media wouldn't allow it. it didn't happen. it closed down my business for two months after that because media was following me everywhere. the last thing a housewife wants is for me to show up on nbc when she is in her house robe it doesn't work well that closed down the business. it gave me the opportunity to get out there and and ask americans to get educated on the facts what is going on. get informed about the decisions they are making and the people they are voting in. i went around with john mccain because it was the lesser of two evils to be frank. i'm not afraid to say that john mccain exactly doesn't represent true conservatism, he does represent republicans but not true conservatism. >> sean: he certainly frustrates me i've battled with him on campaign finance, immigration reform, the gang of 12. we've had a number of issues. do you now not support him? he's up for reelection in the senate are you supporting him? >> absolutely not. john mccain is off of washington. he's a career politician. he's had ample tunes to fix things and get thing -- opportunities to fix things and get things done yet here we are. he's the face of what is being done in washington. i'm not picking on mccain we need to get rid of those of those guys who are career politicians. >> sean: you supported him for president. he's been strong and solid on the war. i do agree with him on enhanced interrogations. he's been a strong advocate against earmarks. is it just those issues that i mentioned earlier or you really think he and all the incumbents should go? >> well i think he and all the incumbents should go. he's of washington he's disconnected from mainstream america. our founding fathers didn't intend for people to get elected and then continue to stay. they expected them to serve a term or two not pass laws that are going to affect them when they go back to the private sector. there's no checks and balances because these guys discovered a gravy train and have jumped on it the, damn the taxpayers is what it comes down to that's the stuff i see. >> sean: does that mean you will run yourself? help me out here. >> i know it's worst than that she runs out the door apparently points the gun at someone going by in a car and then runs down to the local ford dealership and sticks the gun in someone's chest and says, "i need a getaway car my husband is coming after me." if you accidentally shot your brother do you run out and threaten one or two people with a gun and then demand a getaway car? none of this was mentioned in the police reports. >> sean: all right, now connects delahunt to this, did he have the active role in covering this whole thing up? >> well, sean since this has happened, you've been following the reports in boston. the current police chief in braintree is pointing the finger at the former police chief. the former police chief is pointing the finger at the state police. the state police are pointing it back at the braintree cops. and delahunt is pointing the finger at everybody else. first he says, i don't remember this case. now he says, well i barely remember it. he's in the mideast so he's not answering any questions directly in front of cameras. he's letting his aides, first his congressional aide now former first assistant did district torn they are doing all the talking for him. by the -- district attorney, they are doing all the talking for him. new developments tonight the current district attorney also a democrat issued a statement saying the police and the district attorney's office 23 years ago had probable cause to arrest this woman amy bishop for assault with a dangerous weapon, carrying a dangerous weapon and unlawful possession of ammunition. that's another strike against dell hadn't from his fellow democrat bill keating. >> sean: you know the politics of massachusetts as well as anybody that i know. by the way, i want to thank all the people in your state and you and every other talk show host up there the scott brown victory did save the american people from health care. >> it was our pleasure. >> sean: what a shock, but it was a great victory. were you aware of this case prior to this or because of the shooting did this come to light? >> only because of the shooting did this come to light. you know you mentioned in your taped piece that dell hunt is saying he may not run. i think in this kind of climate even in massachusetts when a democrat says i don't think i'm gonna run it means i'm not gonna run. the state senator on the cape which is in the district has already announced he's running if delahunt isn't. there's a kennedy in the shadows. there's a kennedy in waiting. joe ken did -- joe kennedy, iii may seek the seat. sean sun is that a likely possbility or rumor? >> i think that it possibly could help the democrats. there's too much divisiveness in this country. we have republicans splitting off, democrats who aren't happy with obama we need to come back to our party's centers and agree on issues. i don't agree with you that the republicans should stay out of helping this country by going to obama's meeting. >> sean: you know how they can help the country? defeat pelosi, reid and obama >> show up for the issues. you cannot show up for the issues and say we were locked out. >> sean: wait a minute. nancy pelosi said they've already decided they are going to use reconciliation on health care. >> there are more issues, for example nuclear energy, a huge issue in in country. something that the republicans and the republicans and democrats need to agree on. >> sean: how about drilling? how about building refineries? expanding coal mining. >> you have to agree to drill. you can't say we don't really believe in the -- [ talking over each other ] >> i'm just noticing that tim pawlenty, republican, right, former governor of minnesota, right? he's saying that republicans need to present a legitimate alternative when it comes to an issue like health care. it is not enough to simply say no. >> sean: on the republican website in fairness they've been pushing their agenda it is there in writing on -- [ talking over each other ] >> it is disingenuous. what you hear from republicans is we need to have insurance sold across state lines. these things have been around for years when republicans were in charge of congress, when they had a republican president and they never got passed. >> you can't buy insurance across state lines today. >> i'm saying republicans didn't do it. >> it will save a lot of money. i'm on a statin i take one for high cholesterol. i used to be on an insurance plan and paid $15 for co-pay what. i went in and it cost me $139 maybe it is not so good. i went home checked online and switched to another drug and it got to $40 a month now i'm on generic drug. i had information, i know more about cholesterol today than i ever did. i save. that's just me. >> there's so many stories everybody has a story about health care, everybody has a story about their appointment in the system to not show up and be angry -- >> sean: you are repeating yourself. barack obama shut the republicans out for a year. he didn't list don't public. he tried to ram everything down the people's throat. he failed as a desperate pr move now i will invite you after you defeated me on the ideas. >> you are saying you are not going to show up. >> sean: i'm telling people, you know what i want people to do? >> sean: no. >> he prosecuted over 300 alleged terrorists in this country. >> sean: if he was following what bush did wouldn't he have interrogated the guy who tried to blow up that plane in detroit? >> no richard reid wasn't. >> isn't the obama administration is trying khalid sheikh mohammed here? >> isn't it the bush administration that tried -- i was going to say harry reid, >> that would be good. >> that tried the shoe bomber. none of these people under the bush administration were charged and tried in military court. >> sean: are you trying to make the case that barack obama is tougher on national security? >> i could make the case. >> there's a difference between tougher and appeaser. he not an appeaser. he's trying to figure this out. and the republicans are screaming and crying about it instead of giving an answer. >> sean: he's closing gitmo, ending enhanced interrogations. he's apologizing for america. he thinks he can talk with ahmadinejad. >> let's look at afghanistan, let's look at iraq. george bush wanted to set a deadline, barack obama is doing it. afghanistan president bush said, we want to go after taliban, who has sent additional troops approved more drones. he talked about closing gitmo, so did president bush the difference is obama set a deadline but he hasn't been able to keep it. >> [ talking over each other ] >> you said there is no way he's as tough as president -- >> sean: i think he's weak and he sends a message of weakness to the world. look at the way ahmadinejad and -- >> the saber rattling going on now. >> you think we are weak on iran? >> sean: i would not hold israel back from defending themselves that the annihilation that iran is promising. >> i wouldn't do that either. there's a young movement in iran that wants to topple the current regime. why aren't we helping them? >> i think we are. i don't think we want to do it in such a everybody knows. >> i would do it in a way that we understood that if you keep this up and supporting hezbollah and all these terrorist groups by proxy you people won't have gas, they will be walking. >> that's the kind of sanctions we want to put in place. when you say let israel go right at them. ever think of consequences, domino? >> sean: when israel took out those facilities in iraq and experienced worldwide condemnation through the prism of history it was the right decision, wasn't it juan? >> i'm just saying be aware of world war three. >> sean: do you want al-qaeda and ahmadinejad and iran having nuclear weapons?
