>> welcome to this special edition of "hannity. tonight we are looking back at what was one wild year. 2009 brought us a new president and we saw tea parties all across the country and there was no shortage of scandals in washington, hollywood and yes even the world of sports. tonight we cover all of the issues and much more. joining me in the next hour is frank luntz who brought us one of his famous focus groups. he is going to share their thoughts on the last 12 months and turn our attention to the top economic events of 2009. we have the main question we want to ask, out of this audience with one of you voted for barack obama? >> 12. >> how many voted for john mccain. >> 12. >> split. just like america. >> not quite. actually barack obama's approval rating is falling off. we will get to that in a second. >> i was going to say we need one more obama person because he got a few more percentage points. we were saying the last few days the recession is over. you are the american people. by show of hands how many believe the recession is over? one. one individual. why do you think it's done? >> by definition the recession is over the way you define recession, by employment it's not over. >> none of you think it's over? >> we haven't created enough jobs. most of the jobs we have created are in the public sector. we need private jobs. >> why not? >> i think it's slowing down. we are not increasing jobs as much as we could. but i think that a lot of the indicators show we are getting better. >> let me ask one question on this related issue. the president said if we passed the stimulus we would face a catastrophe or a disaster. unemployment would not go above 8 percent. if we didn't pass it it might go to 9 percent. now we have double digits. what does that tell but the president in terms of confidence? >> he is out of touch with reality. maybe the aids are telling him the wrong facts. 10 percent is lower than what it is the there are people unemployed. 18 percent is the real number i think. >> has nothing to do with what the president is saying it's what's happening on wall street. unless the corporations get on board and decide to bring more jobs to the economy then -- >> can i stay with this for a second. the president did say if we passed his plan unemployment wouldn't go above 8 percent. now it's double digits. is that a false promise? was he overly optimistic? >> can't dictate what wall street is going to do but he is trying to stimulate the economy on his own. >> did you support cash for clunkers yes or no? >> no. >> how many of you did? how many did not. aren't you frustrated with what obama is doing in the economy? >> no, not at all. that's not statistically significant. >> we have obama speaking to house democratic conference so we can roll this tape. let's roll it. >> you get the argument this is not a stimulus bill it's a spending bill. what do you think a stimulus is? that's the whole point. seriously. that's the point. >> i have to ask you about the spending. when it comes to washington spending how many would say you are mad as hell and you are not going to take it any more? 72 percent of americans overall express their anger and it's one of the reasons why only 33 percent think their kids are going to have better quality of life than them. >> that is frightening. the government didn't keep his promise? you don't trust the government to get us out of this. >> i think we are told what we want to hear and not what will actually happen. who has a crystal ball to say it won't go above 8 percent. >> we should be using tarp money to reduce the federal deficit. >> the government doesn't have any money it's the tax payer's money. economically flawed. any spending bill is taking money out of the people's pocket. they spend money we don't have so they are taking it from future generations. >> didn't the president say that in his campaign? >> i want to defend the tax payer plan. >> it's not the tax payer's money it's china's money. >> now we can't go to the chinese because we need their money to fund our debt. >> we don't have enough people in government who know what the real world is like. we have too many professional politicians who never made a payroll never run a business and are clueless. >> we all remember rick santeli from cnbc. this became a pretty famous spot this past year when he said this to the president. >> this is america. how many of you people want to pay for your neighbor's mortgage that has an extra bathroom and can't pay their bills? raise your hand. president obama, are you listening? we are thinking of having a chicago team party in july. all of you capitalists that want to show up at lake michigan i am going to start organizing it. if you read our founding fathers people like benjamin franklin andever son what we are doing in this country is making them roll over in their graves. >> i want to know who has kids here. about half of you. aren't you afraid for your children? aren't you awe frayed you won't be able to afford what we are taxing them. >> i won't have money to raise them well. >> i would like to have my own money to pay for my own child's education not somebody else's child. >> some people think that's selfish that you are talking your own money. what about the people who are hurting out there? >> healthcare is going to cost us trillion dollars for the next ten years what will happen when my daughter is old you ha enoug? >> if due care of somebody else's health problems when you have h1n1 and other problems you are going to pay for it. you can't ignore the fact that your neighbor is doing well. >> are you willing to take care of her? >> yifr one should stand on their own. >> i want to go back to the confidence issue joe biden made this comment very specifically even if they got -- even if they passed this bill they didn't get it right. >> if we do everything right, we do it with absolute certainty we stand up there and make really tough decisions, there's still a 30 percent chance you are going to get it wrong. >> did they get it wrong? >> ax absolutely. >> how many think they got it wrong? how many of you voted for barack obama think they got it wrong? you are an obama vote tore. what did he get wrong? >> i think he seems to not really take a stand. this is what i am going to do. he believes both ends of the spectrum he wants to to be right. >> got it wrong why? >> overly hospital -- optimistic. >> he is ee piecing to everybody he has to go to democrats what is what we have to do. >> i think he's in a tough situation. he's the first black president. he's under a microscope. >> is that an excuse? >> yes. >> you think it is an excuse. >> i do. >> why it matter what his race is in terms of his leadership ability? >> because he is under a microscope because he is a blackman. >> didn isn't every president ua microscope? >> no. >> how many people think esz under a microscope more than any other president? >> absolutely. >> how many don't believe that? >> why absolutely? >> he knows he is making history, he's the first af ca - african american president. he has to be a paragon of ideas and change. >> do you think the media has been unfair to barack obama? maybe. >> maybe. >> were the other obama people here. there's one person. >> you would support it? >> i don't like the concept that you say it's socialism. what about reform? don't you believe in reform? >> i do. >> why are you calling it socialism? >> tort reform, medical savings account tax credits but not blowing up the best system in the world. >> i would like to see insurance available across state lines. this is something that the democrats have stofed at continuously. >> everybody is missing most basic point here. that is that none of this is constitutional. the government does not have under the constitution, the right to be doing this at all. >> do you guys agree with this? how many agree. i want to see a show of hands. >> the obama people here he got elected on passing healthcare reform. >> he has to get the democrats to say i am in favor of single payer option like they have in canada. there should not be one person in the states who does not have health insurance. >> you want the government to take it over? >> just like it huz duz for medicare. >> it if it's so important why s it take four-years to get there? why don't they start acting now? >> remember the town hall took place a lot this summer. one woman made a lot of national attention was katie abe grams. she then became a guest on this program right here. but you may remember this from this past yie. >> i don't believe this is just about healthcare. it's not about tarp, it's not about left and right. this is about the system attic dismantling of this country. i am 35 years old i have never been interested in politics. you have awakened sleeping giants. >> you are going to bankrupt this country you and the democrats and you are making a mistake. >> let me respond. i don't understand your mentality. what do you think you accomplish by yelling? how many disagree. hands up high. not many. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. i guess the question i have is when you watch this you brought up tort reform, medical savings is another, tax cuts or tax benefits for people who can't afford their own insurance plans. how many are frustrated these other ideas haven't been discussed? even obama supporters. who is over age 50. do you want to be on medicare? would you if you had that option use it? >> no. >> it's terrific for my mother. people on it getter rific healthcare. >> who else is over 50? would you be willing to go on medicare. would you? would you? you might. would you. >> i want to ask you a question. i know you guys have gotten video. what i want to know is whether you all would want this type of answer rather than what they are fighting for. let's roll that out. >> i am chris vay founder of u.s. preventive medicine. are you tired of the bickering over methcare? i am. my dad died of colon cancer at age 1. everyone has their own story and i do, too. shouldn't we provide a prevention plan that can help prevent illness in the first place and give direction so problems can be found earlier. the prevention plan the right care at the right time and the right price. >> the idea of prevention what believes that is important? this is the private economy not the government. if this is the private economy offering a pension plan who believes pef ven prevention is important? why? >> if you stay healthy you wlb healthy later. how much can it cost to cover the basics. >> you are one of the youngest people here but you still believe in prevention? >> save a lot of people money. why someone in an urban area who can't afford to go to pcp every year can't afford to buy vitamins and other things like that. >> it would cost the government less in the long run if we focus on prevention rather than on those who are sick. let me ask this question. how many of you do not have confidence the government can pull this off well? >> i don't know why they spent so much time with the funeral. >> is it possible there isn't anything else the media chooses to do of substance and they pick this and it's sensationalism and people will watch it. >> he was a good musician about 20-years ago. he was a pedophile. i don't know why we ha everyone wrapped up with him. that kid is not even his. >> we do have him in that interview, that infamous interview where he sleeps with other people's children in bed tucks them in and gives them cookies. does any adult act like that? raise your hand if yes. who says not? >> she had to get her book out ready for publication so she could make some money. >> why do you disagree? >> they in people going and doing little lawsuits one after another after another frivolous. >> hundreds of thousands. >> hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees. >> that's not the issue. the issue is she is trying to get herself taken seriously. i can't believe we lev live in a country that would take her seriously. >> why would you ta not take he seriously? >> she is from alaska. she didn't sit in reverend wright's church for 20-years did she? >> you want to say something? >> she had worse than he had? >> barack obama? >> we have to take a break. when we come back we are going to ta take a look at foreign poy issues and blunders of the year. moments that encapsulate obama's first moments in office. here is our most outrageous video of the year, remember him, rob blagojevich maintaining his innocence right here on this show. >> haven't done anything wrong. you never ever in any conversation never intended to violate any criminal law. >> you are on a speech. you are giving me a bumper sticker in a speech. >> i don't believe anybody had any intention of violating criminal law. >> we are looking back at some of the highlights some low lights of 2009. president obama sold himself to america as somebody who would change the country's image on the world stage. after a year in office one of the president's most memorable foreign policy moments we look at the president's most recent decision and announcement on afghanistan. >> as commander-in-chief i am determined that it is in our vital national interest to send an additional 30,000 u.s. troops to afghanistan. for 18 months our troops will begin to come home. these are the resources that we need to see the initiative while building the afghan capacity that can allow for a responsible transition of our forces out of afghanistan. >> by show of hands who supports that to send 30,000 troops? who voted for obama and still o opposes it? tell me why? >> in the back. >> wish he had given that speech a year and a half ago. it's no different now. >> george bush announced it? >> i do agree with you he said things in that speech he hadn't said before. you tell your enemy you are leaving i think that's a bad policy. >> i think you are right. i have supported obama but i feel afghanistan is another vietnam it's a no win for us. i don't think it would make sense to say we are going to leave. when we do that the game is over really. >> the whole speech was nothing but appeasement. he was trying to appease the left and the right. >> he appointed himself. general mcchrystal wanted 40,000 troops he gave him a third of what he wanted. >> three quarters. >> three quarters. >> -- there's the feeling that those on the right won't give him a break won't say anything good about him no matter what he says. he resigneds i will say something good. >> that was a good see significance. but his qualifying was pour. everybody is calling this another vietnam. it's only another vietnam if they make the same mistakes. he's making the same mi mistakm. >> he was asked for 40,000 troops he committed to 30,000. then he gave the stipulation of when they were coming home. >> bush got us into that mess to begin with. >> this is a very important point. >> bush responded appropriately. >> (talking over one another) >> they said they support it. >> hold on one second. if you got a -- from the federal government a note that said they want you to serve in afghanistan, is there any one in this seat that would not go? you oh wouldn't go? even if the president said to you i want you to go? why? >> i do not believe in war. >> at all? >> no. >> obama just said in his speech in order for peace there has to be war. there has been war throughout history. >> let me go to another thing here. we have quite a controversy when the president bowed before the saudi sing -- king. remember this video. >> this president bowed before the saudi king. i think it's the best argument i have seen for an american energy policy to use cole, ethanol, oil, natural gas, nuclear power, solar, wind, let's have american energy and not bow to anybody verses bowing to a saudi king. i can't image a better symbol for why we need an american energy policy. >> how many agree with newt? how many disagree. we are broken into the same categories. why? >> first of all remember when bush went to saudi arabia years ago he's walking around the block holding his hand. i don't know what's worse bowing or holding his hand. >> he was helping the king. >> we have been reduced to second class citizens. >> i think the bow and the handshake epitomizes obama. he want to be this and that. that's it. >> i also think we to recognize the cultures of the other world. not say we are the world's best. >> you know what i think is a bigger issue. we have more oil, more natural gas, more coal in the united states in anwar offshore in the 48 states and we continue to be dependent on foreign oil. how many would like to hear them say we will drill for refineries and oil and natural gas? how many agree with that? how many are against drilling in our own country. you want to continue to import oil? >> until that time, until that time shnt we be energy dependent? >> how can we drill against them. we can't. >> probably our oil. >> they are drilling sideways going into our oil. >> the point is this shows a lack of foreign policy and shows the rest of the world we don't know what we are doing. >> we will get to that. stay right there. coming up we cannot talk about 2009 without talking about the president's first year in office from his beer summit to his poor choice in one czar after another. we will have our studio audience reacting. we are almost at our mos outrageous video of the year. the president on his worldwide apolog apology tour. >> we have to acknowledge potentially we have made some mistakes. that's how we learn. in america there's a failure to appreciate europe's leading role in the world. there have been times where americans show errors and dismiss it. >> i would like to think that with my election and the early decisions we made that you are starting to see some restoration of america's standing in the world. sean: so far we have >> we have highlighted some of the most memorable events of 2009 from tea partieds to tiger woods. we are going to take a close ir look here's a question he raised through out the year. is barack obama a socialist? >> he said it himself we need to spread the wealth around. that is one. tenants of socialism. >> day number 29 of socialism you can believe in. >> earlier this week we heard the world's best sales man and associates address the nation. >> it's one big down payment on a socialism experience. >> i think most americans agree with me. >> by show of hands how many do you think barack obama is a socialist? >> do you think it's a productive way to have political discourse? >> i think so. look what he has been doing to the economy. he wants everyone to chip in and help everyone else out. >> what's wro wrong with the dialogue. >> the question is do you think that's a proper way to engage? that kind of label is loaded with -- ool ue voted for obama you thought he was a socialist. >> i didn't know. i didn't know. >> socialist newspaper welcoming him as a new member. he joined the socialist party himself. to call him a socialist is a stated fact. >> you voted for obama you think he is a socialist? >> i voted for obama with 51 percent conviction. voighted for him i am a mccain fan. i took a leap of faith. >> you wouldn't vote for him again? >> no. >> yes, ma'am. >> i think he's the first one who has actually stepped up and said wealth is very unevenly distributed in this country. he's trying to address that. i don't think there's anything wrong with that. >> that's the point. >> it's government's job to create that. >> we believe in freedom and that is individual responsibility or do you think this should be an equal result society? how many of you think it ought to be about we share the wealth? >> it is not either or. >> you need to have a combination. that's part of small b democracy. >> we pay 50 percent you live in new york? >> i live in new jersey. >> new york and new jersey you pay some of the highest tax rates in the country, 50, 55 percent of your income. is that fair or is that too much? >> i don't have a problem paying the taxes if the money is used effectively. >> is it? is it? >> my issue is i am concerned it is not used. this is where you are republican or democrat. it is not necessarily used well. >> czars have become a big issue. the radical appointments hold dren and january jones for example. let's roll the tape. >> jobs for urban youth. giving urban youth meaningful dignified pathways out of poverty. this is no longer about business opportunities for rich people or consumer choices for affluent. it's about jobs for people. >> how is the republican partyable to put things through?
