i'm harris faulkner. an american hero who struck fear in the hearts of our enemies. gun down, he was trying to help. chris kyle, a retired navy seal sniper was fatally shot along with another man this weekend at a texas gun range. police say the suspect a former marine turned his weapon on those other men. tonight, we're learning more about that man, the suspect, 25-year-old eddie ray ruth. a veteran who reportedly suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder now facing multiple murder charges. molly line has been following the story for us. american hero known as the u.s. military's most lethal sniper and another man both killed at the rough creek lodge roughly 50 miles southwest of fort worth texas, yesterday. texas authorities believe eddie ray ruth of lancaster shot kyle and his close friend chad little field shortly after 3:00 in the afternoon fleeing the lodge area in kyle's stolen pickup truck. he was a dedicated corporal in the marines who had been deployed in iraq in 2007 and served in haiti in 2010. currently listed on reserve duty. a motive for the shooting remains unclear. but ruth apparently suffered from ptsd. according to friends, kyle may have taken him to the range in an effort to help him cope and ruth turned on the two men, shooting them at close range. after the murders, texas authorities say ruth drove to his sister's house and told her and her husband what happened at the gun range. they called law enforcement who went to ruth's home to make an arrest. ruth fled but caught after a short pursuit and automatic handgun recovered at his home. >> harris: kyle, a true american patriot had appeared on fox news not long ago. >> exactly. he had made several appearances here on the network. he always talked about love of country and duty he felt to several service members. kyle was a best selling author of the biography called american sniper published by harper collins which is owned by the same parent company as fox news channel. the story he wrote, the details here are of his 150 plus kills of insurgents in iraq. he also helped create the cares foundation, a nonprofit that helps soldiers recover from post-traumatic stress syndrome. he was known to take fellow veterans as therapy. here is one of his clips from "fox & friends." >> you have to show respect. that flag is red, white, and blue. the red stands for the blood the guys have spilled. not just the guys here in iraq, afghanistan, but all through our history. you are not going out purposefully trying to kill people and rack up numbers. you are going out to try to save americans. >> kyle was also a family man, he leaves behind a wife and kids, harris? >> i'm not going to speak about confidence. he could be my boss. >> harris: steve centanni live with the news from d.c. right now steve, his supporters trying to stem the tide against hagel, what are they saying? >> well, leon panetta the current defense secretary defended hagel saying it was partisan politics that led to the fierce questioning by members of the armed services committee on capitol hill. listen. >> it's pretty obvious that the political knives were out for chuck hagel. >> this was totally part shan? >> what disappointed me is that, you know, they talked a lot about past quotes but what about what a secretary of defense is confronting today. we just did not see enough time spent on discussing those issues and in the end that's what counts. >> well, panetta says hagel should have been questioned more about issues like the war in afghanistan, the turmoil in the middle east and the looming budget cuts that could severely impact the pentagon. instead, hagel was criticized for his past statements on iran, israel and the u.s. nuclear strategy. harris? >> harris: well, steve, after what you could call a rather bumpy confirmation hearing to say the least, what are hagel's chances at this point? >> well, as it stands, at least 12 republicans do plan to vote against hagel. his confirmation, even though is he a republican himself. only two have said they would vote for him at this point. and they are mike joehand of nebraska anded that cochran of mississippi. many are predicting hagel will be confirmed. >> i think for a cabinet office, 51 votes is generally considered the right standard for the senate to set and at that level, i think he makes it but i don't think he makes it with a lot of room to spare. >> senator blunt is among those planning to vote against hagel citing too many inconsistencies, harris? >> harris: you know, stif with that margin that he mentioned the 51 votes you wouldn't need very many republicans to vote in favor, nevertheless. thank you very much. >> okay. >> in alabama, prayers for a little boy held hostage and for the bus driver tonight. first, the 5-year-old child being held inside an underground bunker for a sixth day. police still keeping in constant communication with the man suspected of kidnapping the child off a school bus after killing the bus driver. and today the funeral for that bus driver. hundreds of people gathering to say good by to 66-year-old charles albert poland jr. his flag-draped coffin wheeled in the start of the ceremony then friends sang songs in his memory. the eulogy given by the superintendent of the school district where he worked. poland was driving that bus last week when police say jimmie lee dykes board it and demanded two children. he blocked and tried to keep him from reaching those little ones when he was shot several times. the sheriff keeping his remarks focused on poland. >> today is going to be a tough day for our family and please give them the peace to be able to do what they need to do in their time of mourning. >> jonathan serrie live for us tonight in midland city, alabama. jonathan, so much heartache in that community tonight. >> indeed, this bus driver was so well loved by people who knew him and strangers have grown to respect him because because of his heroics on that school bus on tuesday. by all accounts, charles chuck poland loved his job and his passengers. on hot days he provided cold water. on holidays he provided gifts and last tuesday he gave his life to protect the students who rode his bus. >> he he put his life before his kids that were on the bus. i think that's one of the biggest things you remembered for being a hero and saving those other kids. >> after the service, poland's funeral procession was led by members of the patriot guard riders. and fellow drivers who drove their school buses with black ribbons tied to them. harris? >> harris: what more are we learning about the suspect in this case? >> yeah, jimmie lee dykes remains in communication with authorities through that pvc pipe that serves as a vent from the surface down to his underground bunker. he is also allowing authorities to send comfort supplies to that 5-year-old hostage. today, authorities tell us they delivered a red hot wheels car and some cheese-it crackers to that little boy in that underground bunker. the line of communication remains open but the hostage standoff continues. harris? well, listen to this. authorities telling us now the bus did not belong on that road. there is is only a 10-foot height limit there. so obviously the bus was too tall to fit underneath that bridge they say the driver who was not injured failed to heed the warn science that were posted. we now know what killed a new york city mom who vanished in turkey and turned up dead in istanbul. she died from a blow to the head. she is 33 years old. a mom of two was vacationing in istanbul by herself. her family in new york city heard from her for the last time on january 21st. the same day she was supposed to come home but never did. police already taking a number of people in for questioning as they have discovered her body. we have been reporting last night as many as 11 now each more than that still waiting for autopsy results. but they say it's clear a head injury caused her death. family friends today attending a prayer service in her honor in new york. lisa enforce of our fox affiliate wnyw. what is the latest on the investigation. >> questions. there has been no arrest that we know of so far in this case: mystery man with whom the mother of two had corresponded. who she had planned to meet that day that she disappeared. at a bridge there. he he told authorities according to published reports that he never actually met her that day. that she never showed up. so there is a lot of questions now about what happened from that point on until the point where her body was found. and the police chief as you mentioned in istanbul said she had a blow to her head there are also reports that she was also stabbed, that her ipad and her phone were taken but that her personal jewelry, a watch, a ring, some other jewelry that she had on was not removed from her body and that in fact, her body may have been moved from another place she may have been killed at one location and then moved to where her body was found. and it's looking as if they have questioned up to about 15 people so far, including a couple of women. and if this follows traditional police investigations, what they are probably doing at this point is piecing together a time line, trying to come up with her whereabouts from where she was when we last saw her in that surveillance video of her at the mall, sitting down to have a meal to the time that she disappeared. now, also istanbul, you have to remember, according to authorities here in the united states, law enforcement officials is a city that has more than 500 surveillance cameras. there is probably a lot of surveillance video that the istanbul police have that we haven't seen yet. reportedly thousands of hours. they have a specific task force of 28 police officers locally who are poring through that moment by moment. i think we are going to be hearing a lot more this week about what happened. >> lisa, such good details that you are giving us there as we flash forward looking ahead at what this might look like. you obviously have been covering this story. you have learned so much about this mom. i know the family lives out on staten island here in the new york area. what more you can tell us about her? >> a very devoted mother by all accounts and not just her husband. her husband stephan worked for the trans sit authority. different shifts throughout the day. according to family and friends that i spoke with, i was in their living room last sunday at this time and, according to the family and friends i spoke with, they arranged their lives around their two boys. this was not a mom that let the dvr player. she home schooled them, taking them on trips. trying to give them as much educational opportunity as she possibly could given their limited means. here was a mom according to her best friend she told me that before she went on this trip she had actually laid out clothes for the boys to go to school so that the household and their lives would be as undisrupted as possible. so it's really tragic and by everyone's account she lived for those boys and she was a very very involved hands on mom. >> harris: you know, one of the questions that's coming up to me from viewers at least and i don't know if we will be able to answer this tonight is why she was vacationing alone in the country of turkey i'm sure that will perhaps come out in the investigation. >> it definitely will. i spoke with her best friend who was supposed to go with her on that trip. she said at the last moment she simply could not afford the trip. i also asked her husband i said you know, a lot of people are wondering how could you have let your wife who has h. never been overseas before go on a trip like this he said you know what?
