>> certainly, we know that the purpose of terrorism is to have an impact broadly, socially, and economically and religiously and during the holidays there is a great opportunity to have the impact when people travel and they are gathered in public places like in malls and airports and around transportation centers. so, we certainly need to be more careful around this time because otherwise it could be an opportunity for someone would wants to do harm to do a great deal of harm. >> it seems we are paying more attention to it, the obama administration appears, we remember what happened last year with the underwear bomber on christmas day and it seems this is an attempt by the obama administration to be out in front on this and say we are hearing chatter about potential problems with the thermoses and we want to put it out there. >> absolutely. that is the best thing they could do. and i am happy it is doing it. this is a reminder we have successfully managed to travel home to be with our families and friends for the holidays, we are very fortunate that the measures that are in place are working so it is not just the people who are keeping us safe but also the policies that are keeping us safe so we have to be grateful for that during the holidays. >> we are learning about india being on high alert look for the terrorists there, four terrorists after the high alert after a suspected terror plot was busted there coming from pakistan. this is speaking to the problems and the world right now with al qaeda being the nest of vipers hidden in all kinds of locations. specifically, pakistan with the united states not being able to infiltrate in pakistan and getting cooperation from the government there. >> yes, it indicates there is a big problem because the threat in mumbai as i understand is actually not even from al qaeda but from the army of the pure that is also based in pakistan and operating in pakistan. so it indicates that we have problems with pakistan and it could be saying you are not welcome here but it is not doing enough to get the groups out of the country. >> this is a problem as we are going to head to the bases this morning in afghanistan and talking to some of the troops there as they celebrate christmas. this is a problem, of course, spilling into afghanistan and our relationship with pakistan, and is the obama administration in your opinion doing enough to strong-arm pakistan in clamping down on terrorism? >> unemployment is up. i think the way obamacare was handled was poor. and there should have been more bipartisanship as far as what was really needed in the bill and now law. >> for the record it only took two people before president obama's name was mentioned. >> reached the deep end of the pool with housing and i am tired of being surrounded by empty houses, the police came two days ago and evicted homeless people living across from my house and we did not know about it. it is scary. >> good year, november 2nd gave me hope that 2011 will be better >> good year or bad? is 2010 the end of being decent? >> i don't think so. i think people thought when president obama got in office that everything would change right then and there and they expected immediate change but when everyone gets in office you have to battle that, you have to get used to the way the country is running and we as a people need to pull together and be there for one another and stop worrying about the government trying to fix everything. >> my frustration is that i continue to write letters to congressional people and senators and i get no responses and it started to continue throughout the year. i agree with the other gentleman the elections gave me a bit of hope but my business went down, my expenses went up, and we are starting to pay $3 for gas again. >> the thing is, president obama got elected by promising he would fix everything immediately, and we all agree that cannot be done but that was his promise and a lot of the people did not vote before showed up to vote, watched the result and said, where is the change? >>guest: we kept that out, and now you can have both. this is just the southwest corn and we driz ill crunchy onion rings on ton and bake it in the oven for 15 minutes. >>clayton: do you mix it? or just put the soup on top? >>guest: it goes down and we have onions in it already so it goes down and it is that simple. i want to talk to you, also, on the roast we have delicious greens, and when you cook, rather than just cook vegetables in water, add some flavor, salt, pepper, butter, and we, i like to add chicken broth or vegetable broth. >> i have tried that and it does taste better, you fit it in the broth? >>guest: that was the size of the card. these were the gift cards sent to members of congress and diplomat corps and other heads of state. this is the 19826 the reagans and this was so unique because it was called christmas eve at the white house and mrs. reagan liked this because she said on christmas eve she would be up with the light on in the upper window there, and wrapping gifts and getting ready for christmas morning with the family and this, too, would be to members of congress and the diplomatic corps. >> do they say merry christmas? happy holidays? >>guest: it changed from time to time. the very first one was with the hoover administration, but coolidge was the first to do a proclamation but all of them during the official years were merry christmas and then more politically done as "happy holidays." >>clayton: my favorite, teddy roosevelt, you have a card from him? but you say the hoover administration was the first? so the roosevelt that was ... how did you get that? >>guest: that was informal and i have another informal of president taft and the others were done through the first lady's office and that started with hoover. but throughout the time christmas cards were popular at the turn of the century, and prior to that, everyone was just doing nice verbal greetings. >> and you bought some of them at auction. what is the most you have paid? >> is she the only american who feels that way? are others fed up? >> the presidency is not over and there is a battle over president obama's library. two cities are duking it out for the honor. >> and we have increased airline security and a new set of t.s.a. guidelines. >>clayton: how do americans feel about the security? we have a pollster testing the pulse of the nation. a lot of people are traveling this morning, frank, at least over the course of the week for the holiday, what did you find doing your research and polling with the individuals of how they feel about air travel? >>guest: we asked the american people as part of a survey, what you thought about freedom in america today. and the results were startling and it is my number one findings of 2010. we asked the public, are you more or less free than five years ago? only 13 percent feel themselves more free. and 53 percent feel less free than five years ago. and part of that is the reaction to what has been happening in washington. and the feeling we do not have control over our lives. and one more stat, americans are more afraid. than in the past. we asked them, if you feel a sense of hope? or fear? and 69 percent look at the conditions for the next generation with fear. only 28 percent look at that, rather, 26 percent look at the next generation with hope so you have the negativeness going on in america today and in that context we asked the public, you are traveling over the holidays, what do you think of the t.s.a.'s approach, what is happening to you at the airports? and what you are about to here are dramatic sound from americans reacting to what they think of the t.s.a. we will listen. >> i think they should be more selective on would they pat down little old lady whose rosary goes off in security? no, be selective. there is a certain type of person that is more likely. >> are you suggesting profiling? >> yes. >> yes. >> yes. >> by a show of hands how many support profiling? if i said the word "racial profiling," how many would support it? so, profiling is okay. but not by race. what do you think profiling is? >> you have the gentleman, the guy on the plane who got on as a senior and then in mid-flight, a young man is what he was so you cannot say because this is an older person you need to go through the screening if it helps our safety. >> that word "racial," add that word and that is what profiling is. yes, there is age component and gender component but there is a racial component and the moment you add that word the public gets nervous and does not want to acknowledge it but they do not like the way the t.s.a. is handling it because they do not feel average americans should be harassed. >>dave: frank, okay, you are not feeling as healthy as you were a year ago but next you asked people about their responsibilities over the rights and what did you find? >>guest: in looking at t.s.a., the question becomes, what is more important to you as an american? your rights? or your responsibilities? going back to the study, we will look. the american people by a narrow margin, 55 percent to 45 percent think citizenship and how we behave at americans is more a responsibility than a right and the whole issue of whether our rights are being taken away from us by washington will be the great issues in 2011. and i have another stat, whether you think you are citizens of america? or citizens of the world? and this is one of those where if you are republican you are absolutely "i am an american citizen," and 64 percent of john mccain voters said that and only 30 percent of obama voters say that, this is one of the great debates we will have in 2011, the responsibility of an individual? >> the president needs to stay out of the water because there is rough surf, a lot of waves so it will be unsettled at the beaches. otherwise, rain-wise looking good, and it will be quiet with a couple of showers and next week, not sure if he will still be there but a system will bring in heavy rain across northwest parts of the area. and otherwise, wet coast for us, we have another cold front moving eastward, and this will produce more rain across southern california and we saw that crazy rain and the mudslides and that is the last thing we want to hear but for christmas, it will be rainy, along with gusty winds and 60 miles per hour ahead of the system. guys? >>guest: absolutely. it has been a subdue christmas celebration compared to past christmases and that is partly because the christian community here is living in fear. al qaeda has issued threats to target christians if their homes and in their churches following the october attack on a catholic church that left 50 dead. they did carry out the masses across the city and across the country. iraqis went to mass today and there were no christmas trees, no christmas lights, and santa claus did not come out. it was a subdued affair. and security was beavered up around the churches to make sure that worshipers were safe inside their churches. >> is there anything else the government can do in this capacity to protect all of the folks that would like to show their spirit on this day? >>guest: well, the government has beefed up security around the churches and the prime minister maliki has ordered his commanders across the city take personal responsibility for security at the churches. but the problem, then, is the homes are unprotected. the christians would live in communities across the city really cannot have soldiers outside of their homes, al qaeda has targeted christians at home in the past, so, yes, they can protect the churches but, no, they cannot protect the homes. >> we have u.s. troops over there, how do they spend the day? >> let's not leave the audience with the implication that we're bailing out the unions, again, let's not put the blame and shoulder of blame on the unions. this is a lot more. you have the private sector that has 1.2 trillion dollars, sitting on their books, hopefully with the recent tax cut package they're both, obama administration and the republicans step to the plate and provided, you'll see greater hiring for the banks, who also are experiencing, along with corporate america, the highest profits. you'll see greater lending, that will stimulate the economy both in the states and nationally as a whole. >> and again. >> let's not lay that on the unions. >> we don't-- >> and hang on to a lot of cash. >> and jump in here, who then do we-- how do we fix this if we're not blaming this on the unions and turn our backs on the states. how do we fix it? (laughter) >> that's-- >> it's almost funny. >> and there must be issues behind that because i don't think i'm going to fight either of you when we scuffle here. >> i don't know. all right. let's check with maria outside with a look at the forecast and she's got santa with her. >> hi, guys, out here with santa claus and it's cold, but he does have something to tell me that does make me feel a little better. how does this compare to the north pole? >> well, i can actually be wearing shorts. this is balmy weather here. it is cold you and-- >> that doesn't make me feel better. >> well, just, it's a lot warmer here. >> so it's-- >> so it's cold out here and he's saying it's colder in the north pole and santa claus, one request i want for christmas and i want to get some snow. >> i'll tell what you, i'm going to be working very hard and probably, or possibly tomorrow we'll bring that snow for you. hohoho! >> i think i'll get some snow in new york city coming up tomorrow and also i have some good news for you clayton, santa claus is actually a phillies fan so you know. >> wow! (laughter) >> all right, guys. >> i already knew that. >> i'm not buying that, santa is a red sox fan, it only makes sense. after every christmas meal you wind up with leftovers, no need to eat dry turkey. we have some delicious recipes to spice up your table scraps, if you will. we're back with tom griffith, executive chef and director at campbell's culinary institute. after the second day they're tired of eating the same thing as the night before, but maybe reinvent some of these ingredients? >> and it's a great chance for chefs to be creative. turkey pot pie is just a real, real common sense one. and it's very easy to make and i have the ingredients to make one for you, but thought about doing something special and using the same ingredients, the turkey,pot pie, the dough and filling make eppanada. >> quickly. what is the filling? >> it's carrot, celery and onions and died up turkey from the roast turkey and we chose to use swanson aggressive, clearly a favorite. and to pepperidge farms pie crust and i think that works better than puff pastry and cut out the little circles, kind of fun to do. want to try one? >> i will indeed. wrap them up and show us how it's done. >> roll them up. and then just use a fork. >> and how long are we going to bake these? >> in the pre-heated often. 350. eight to ten minutes until they're nice and brown. >> eight to ten minutes and this is about a spoonful on each one and kind of like my burrit burritos. >> look better than mine. >> i'm an aspiring chef. >> and pot pie, onions, olives, and with the roast turkey rolls where you have the roast turkey and platter roll and things like prime rib. i would take probably like french onion soup and heat it up in that and make hot sliders and cold sliders, either way. >> and throw the cranberry up on there to spice it up, i like it. >> and cranberry with turkey and roast beef. >> sounds good. you've got to have cocktails. >> got to have some bubbly. >> what would the morning program be without them. we have mimosas, perfect with left overs. >> what's in a blaney. >> yes, clayton, i will bring you one. >> it's cranberry juice with cranberries and mimosa is orange juice and i brought you a christmas present. >> you brought me a christmas present. tell us what. >> it's in the bag here, but inside of it, i collect mortar and pesttell, and i brought each one of you. >> that's excellent. >> and this is a limited he edition soup. golden harvest tomato soup. we have three colors, yellow orange and this is rosemary pesto, it's delicious. >> we'll try that. thank you for being here. >> we should toast. >> merry christmas to you and clayton and ainsley. >> and got the good alcohol-- >> thank you. >> do you believe in angels? and have you ever met one? well, carly did at age 18. she was diagnosed with cancer. a month before she passed away, she says she met angels which in turn comforted her during her battle with cancer. her story and others like it are chronicled in a new book, encountering heaven and the after life. joining us now is the book's author, dr. jim garlo and tim, whose daughter carly had an encounter with the angels and first of all, very sorry to har about your daughter's passing, but i wanted to find out how she described the angels? what were the stories she told you? >> well, her first encounter was the most extraordinary. the angel. she described it as a beautiful, glowing right with incredible warmth and the angel actually reached out and touched her on the top of her foot. and she was so excited and it was just, it was just such a blessing. and after that. she actually had several encounters with angels and i asked her once to describe them to me and she said that they were mostly children there of all ages, mostly children and they were of different races, they-- and she really enjoyed it. incredible amount of comfort. >> how beautiful. doctor, in your book, i know you've talked to a lot of people who say they've seen angels. any common denominator between all of the stories? >> one of the common denominators, we tend to think of the middle aged pictures, for example, cherubic, and little girls. >> exactly. >> the we found a guy leroy in indianapolis and he saw two guys who took him on herly motorcycles and one in fort worth attacked by a gang of men, two angels saved her and gang members chased them away and they were strong men. she turned to thank them and they jsust vanished and some are children in appearance and a lot of variety in the terms of appearance of angels. >> how did it comfort you as a parent?
