last night at the daughters of revolution in constitution hall in downtown washington, d.c. there you see a guy who is a frontrunner in a number of polls right now and surprisingly, newt gingrich came out with a stand on illegal immigration. people who have been here for 20, 25 years, something like that, he says there should be a way for them to stay in this country. >> we got a soundbite. >> the party that says it's the party of the family is going to adopt an immigration policy that destroys families that have been here a quarter century and i'm prepared to take the heat for saying, let's be humane in enforcing the law without giving them citizenship but by finding a way to create legality so that they are not separated from their families. >> we know what happened when perry got into that territory but remains to be seen what's going to happen with this. >> mitt romney already said it's -- >> pressures a lot of folks. i think it resonates with a lot of people. >> looks at it from a practical perspective and refers to a study that he believes backs up his beliefs and he was confident in saying that, didn't stumble into that where i sense that governor perry did kind of stumble into it and had no idea about the firestorm to come. newt gingrich fully aware of it. overall, they had their hands full last night because like it or not, foreign policy is where the president has 52% approval so it was -- i thought the whole thing was very crisp. i thought it was sober. i thought it was very direct. i thought they were very polite to each other and the sleeper may be congresswoman michelle bachmann who was here yesterday. she used her place on the intelligence committee to show she understands the trouble spots in the world. >> let's back up for a second to talk about newt's suggestion about what to do about illegals. his plan was, you know, he talked about if you've been here for 25 years, and you got a couple of kids -- >> that was an arbitrary number. >> that's right. it could be 15 years. if you put down roots -- >> raise your family. >> if you pay taxes, can you really ask those people to be deported whereas, you know, if you've been here since tuesday, you got no real connection, time to go home. a aif you're somebody who came in the last couple of years, you haven't planted your roots and you're not paying taxes, those are the folks that he's talking about, it seems like. it was a very kind of -- it was a stayed sort of debate compared to the last ones we had. you didn't hear the whooping and cheering because it was sponsored by the heritage foundation and another group. i'll tell you what, brian, and i think you'll agree with me, when people ask questions from think tanks, they are much better on questions from people in drunk tanks. >> unfortunately, we have experienced the fault from the think tanks on the outside and the drunk tanks on the outside. everybody was talking about iran and talking bold about iran. he was probably the most direct saying that we have to take out the regime and here's how. >> we need a strategy of replacing the current regime and we need a strategy that you don't care if you're in pakistan or afghanistan, you have the same tribal relationships. we have to be much more strategic and less tactical in our discussion. if we were serious, we could break the iranian regime within a year starting out candidly with cutting off the gasoline supply to iran and frankly sabotaging the only refinery they have. >> it's that last line that made a lot of people -- that probably propelled him to the top. he talks specifics and he sounds like a statesman. when they're going after each other, you get lost but when you sound like a statesman like he did, he's to the top. >> he did talk a bit about the tsa and the mess over there and how troublesome it is and burdensome it is to go through all that screening at the airport. wolf blitzer who herman cain mangled his name for a minute, here's mr. cain as he stumbles with wolf's first name. >> if there are some areas of the patriot act that we need to refine, i'm all for that. but i do not believe we ought to throw out the baby with the bath water for the following reasons. the terrorists have one objective that some people don't seem to get. they want to kill all of us. so we should use every means possible to kill them first or identify them first. >> but just to be precise, mr. cain, i want to give you a chance, is it ok for muslim-americans to get more intensive patdowns or security when they go through airports than christian americans or jewish americans? yep and the candidates weighed in. >> it was reprehensible for me, for this president to stand in front of americans and to say that that half a trillion dollars, $500 million plus is not going to be on the table and we're just going to have to work our way through it putting young men and women's lives in jeopardy and i will tell you as a commander in chief, as an american citizen. that is totally and absolutely irresponsible, even his own secretary of defense said it was irresponsible. as a matter of fact, if leon panetta is an honorable man, he should resign and protest. >> what they're doing is cutting a trillion dollars out of the defense budget. they're cutting a trillion dollars out of the defense budget which happens to equal the trillion dollars they're putting into obama care. >> i covered ronald reagan's presidency and as you know, and i'll read a quote, he wrote in his autobiography this, if you got 75% or 80% of what you were asking for, i say you take it and fight for the rest later. if you got 75% or 80% of what you wanted, would you make a deal with the democrats, increase some taxes in order to move on? >> it depends on what the 75% and 85% is. if the things that you have to give up make what you're trying to accomplish harder to do, in other words reduce the deficit, what the republican -- why the republicans are drawing a line in the sand rightfully so is because what the democrats are attempting to do is increase taxes which will slow down this economy which will increase the deficit, reduce tax revenues ultimately and increase government payments so you don't work against yourself. >> interesting dialogue regarding the super committee. stuart varney joins us right here, right now. stuart, because of the inaction of the super committee, there's a good chance that people are going to be taking home less money in their paychecks. >> what you're talking about is the extension of the payroll tax holiday. everybody's got that tax holiday now. it goes away on january 1st unless congress acts. so they've got a very limited time frame here. act and everybody keeps that tax break. no action, everybody's taxes go up. >> where does the money go? stuart, where does the money go? when the payroll tax, does it go to social security? >> yes, it does. >> so social security which is not fully funded right now is getting less money so something is paying the price here. >> that's true. but you can expect this extension to go through. speaker boehner says he's quite prepared to talk about it. the democrats want the extension. i'm sure this is going to happen. >> something they'll easily sign away on. >> not easily. there will be a lot of negotiating here. you have three weeks and you have to deal with all kinds of financial issues. there's chaos coming. extension of unemployment benefits, less payment for doctors who treat medicare. you have to have a new spending bill. all of this in three weeks. that is financial chaos. >> it's the lightning round. let's talk a little bit about this. we're now officially $15 trillion in debt. the meantime, people get up in arms about the, you know, $15 baggage fee and now congress, rather than worrying about the debt is going to figure out some way so that we're not bugged by the baggage fee? >> yes. two senators have introduced legislation that would stop airlines from leveeing a fee on your first checked bag. that sounds like a nice idea, doesn't it? i'm sure we've all approved of it. what on earth is the united states senate doing debating airline baggage fees when we're $15 trillion in debt and we've got financial chaos coming at us with all these issues that's got to be resolved by january the 1st. what is going on here? >> well, don't you think -- >> answer me! >> the government is sticking their nose in private business. >> they're trying to do something that will appease the people. that will make people happy with the policies. >> is that what the united states senate is for? legislating baggage fees? are you kidding me? >> alt -- a little bit of a problem. you answer him, go ahead. >> yeah, what she said. you're absolutely right, rather than worrying about the debt, they're worried about baggage fees and they'll probably declare later today national pie week. >> look, we're heading towards bankruptcy, aren't we? can't you see it? we look like greece. we look like portugal. we look like italy, for heavens sake and we're only a couple of years away from the edge of the cliff and we're talking about airline baggage fees as a priority in the united states senate? you say no sanctuaries. you change the rules of engagement. you put the military in charge of the military side and you overhaul the state department so they get the job done and you do it for real and you do it intensely. and you tell the pakistanis, help us or get out of the way. but don't complain if we kill people you're not willing to go after on your territory where you have been protecting them. >> wow. that's the guy that grew up on military bases all across the country. joining us this morning with reaction to the debate last night on national security and foreign policy, our own lieutenant colonel oliver north. welcome back. >> good to be with you, brian, and he was spot on last night. >> nobody is talking about rules of engagement but that's something you always talk about. >> well, look at, what newt gingrich said last night and it reflects the fact that he has more foreign policy experience than all the rest of the candidates combined. to deal with this problem, we've got in afghanistan and pakistan. and the reality of it is weakness never begets cooperation from people who are uncertain about what we're going to be able to do. this administration's lack of leadership on everything from the budget to the economy to how to fight this war is evident in what we've got going on over there starting with the withdraw from iraq and now the draw down in afghanistan. no doubt about it. >> people who actually fight in the war, the people who you spend a lot of time with and the ones that have to sacrifice the most are most worried all their hard work will be for not because they're pulling out too soon and too haphazardly. >> i was down in quantico, virginia, yesterday doing a video for a show that we've got coming up for the holidays. every single one of those marines that we talked to down there said we want to finish and win this war. we don't want to go, in other words, the way ollie north and his comrades had it go from vietnam. >> let's talk about the military budget and how it will be cut by 2013 if they don't come up with some answers to the failure of the super committee. they're talking about an army the size of america in 1940. a navy the size of ours in 1913. and the air force cut more than it's ever been. what's your reaction? >> well, ignores the real impressive danger that we face from iran, north korea, china and other potential threats like you've got going on in the horn of africa. you cannot encourage people to do the right thing. for example, in pakistan. or the russians by perception of weakness. it has failed every single time with every nation on the planet and weakness is going to be reflected by what they're going to do. we're disarming them in the midst of a war and it's never happened before. >> the president has an asian trip that by most accounts went well, he flexed his muscles and talked about his presence in asia at the same time cutting our navy down to a mere mortal proportions. let's look at what leon panetta says. he says space initiatives if they incur these cuts stands, that will be cut back $27 billion. missile defense which i believe we need, $2 billion, gone. ballistic missile fleet cut, $8 billion worth and the navy fleet 230 ships, 10 new ballistic missile subs all nixed at a cost of $7 billion. we'll back the falkland islands will have a bigger army than us. >> in fact, you'll have a smaller navy than the one ronald reagan, president i had a great blessing to serve, campaigned on the premise of rebuilding america's defenses and giving us a 600 ship navy. jimmy carter couldn't cut the military as much as this guy has done. it's jimmy carter on steroids. it's terrible. >> but he hasn't done it and hopefully there will be sober minds in washington to pull this through. around your wrist is a bracelet for a special person. >> yeah, it is. this bracelet was sent to me by the national league of p.o.w. and m.i.a. families. it is for bo birdall, sergeant in the united states army. he's been missing in afghanistan since june 9th -- june 30th of 2009, he's a member of the 25th infantry division out of fort richardson, alaska. he's being held by the haqqani network in northwestern pakistan and this holiday time, brian, if we could just ask americans to pray for his safe return to this soldier. we know that he's alive. and we pray for his safe recovery soon. >> yeah. for our military to focus on that, he will get out. lieutenant colonel oliver north, very nice thing you just did. have a great thanksgiving for you and your family. >> happy thanksgiving to you and yours, my friend. >> all right. thanks. meanwhile, 11 minutes before the top of the hour. this professor calls our troops killers and says it's shameful to send them care packages and now his fellow professor who is serving seas right now is resigning in protest and he joins us from afghanistan but first, dr. keith ablow has a new theory on what led to the death of caylee anthony. he's here next to explain. sweetie i think you need a little extra fiber in your diet. carol. fiber makes me sad. oh common. and how can you talk to me about fiber while you are eating a candy bar? who are the losers? and who was the overachiever? our political panel is here to weigh in. we have editor for townhall.com. tara is here, back, political strategist and former aide to jim mcgreevey. welcome to all of you. you've picked out three moments, one each. let's get to it. katie, with you. what stood out for you? what do you want to share for us? >> i thought mitt romney's comments about obamacare costing a trillion dollars means automatic cuts going to defense costing a trillion dollars is an interesting political point that i'd like to take a look at. >> let's go. let's listen. >> what they're doing is cutting a trillion dollars out of the defense budget. they're cutting a trillion dollars out of the defense budget which just happens to equal the trillion dollars they're putting into obamacare. >> that's around indications that nothing is emerging from the super committee. >> it's hard to take mitt romney seriously when he talks about obama care. he hit obama on foreign policy in this issue and he's saying obama is putting socialized medicine over the national defense. socialized medicine isn't in the constitution. providing for the common defense is. >> tara, you and i agree on this, you think the moment was newt gingrich talking about immigration. i was shocked by it. >> i was shocked by it as well. i have to say, though, newt gingrich is i have to give it to him. he's a very smart man and he handled it very well. the problem is yet again, it's going to come back and bite him for things he said in the past and other candidates will harp on it. most already have. >> his record and what's already on the record. let's listen to newt last night. >> i don't see how -- the party that says it's the party of the family is going to adopt an immigration policy that destroys families that have been here a quarter century and i'm prepared to take the heat for saying, let's be humane in enforcing the law without giving them citizenship. >> john mccain said something similar to that and it destroyed him for a while, had him buried in iowa, correct? >> yes. yes. and i think michelle bachmann has already gone on the attack on newt gingrich for that statement last night. >> right. >> so has mitt romney. mika, let's talk about what you think. you got to go back to ron paul and the patriot act. >> yeah, i think the excitement of the debate has very little to do with who wins and who loses. it's rather entertainment and education and ron paul is there to educate america and the patriot act is one of those elements where you see the difference between his libertarian views and republican views and that's why we see the conflict there. >> let's listen to ron paul talk about how much he hates the patriot act. >> the patriot act is unpatriotic because it undermines our liberty. we have drifted into a condition that we were warned against because our early founders were very clear, they said don't be willing to sacrifice liberty for security. >> ok, we know where he stood with that. that was pretty much a layup. why do you think that cnn goes to john huntsman and ron paul so far in this contest? >> i think because john huntsman has a lot of foreign policy experience. he worked under the obama administration. obama has a high approval rating when it comes to foreign policy and ron paul is always controversial. he has some views that are very different from the rest of the republican field and they know he's going to create views for them. so i think that people want to hear more about ron paul's controversial statements. >> they do? >> rather than -- >> they find it entertaining. it's entertainment value. >> you think more than mitt romney, they want to hear from ron paul, we've been hearing the same thing for six years. >> i do think one thing about ron paul is he has a very enthusiastic and energized group of supporters. and so they have also been pushing and complaining about the fact that he has not been receiving enough coverage, considering he's won these straw polls and he's polling very well and continues to poll well. so i think that probably was at play as well but i agree, to your point about john huntsman. he does have a great deal of foreign policy experience and i think he did very well last night. >> he did well but the amount of tension was noteworthy. >> it's more than that. wolf blitzer, his real name. >> not blitz. >> wolf blitzer actually did a great job of control the crowd. they didn't step on top of one another and in many ways, it was a better debate because of that but also an entertaining debate. this is all about entertainment, too. it's about education and entertainment and that's where you have to have characters like ron paul and like cain actually changed the nature of the debates but not just that. newt gingrich changes the nature of the debate. he can't control himself in many ways. and as such, ideas come up and there's no question about it, if he's the smartest guy in the field. that doesn't necessarily make him the best candidate. >> right. governor perry said i think we should have a no-fly zone over syria and i thought mitt romney was pretty quick on his feet. he said really? we should worry more about their tanks. they're not killing people with their planes. you can't prepare for the tank question. he knows how many, i think he said 5,000. >> you look at the amount of resources to go into the no-fly zo zone, do we have the resources it give syria? it is a ground war. are we going to send troops into syria to fight that war? how many civil wars are we going to get involved in? which i think some of ron paul's position on that are appealing to people. he has a point when he says we're stretched very thin and his policies, ron paul's policies are different from maybe the rest of the field. a lot of g.o.p. candidates have the same -- >> totally different. >> have the same stances on lots of the issues. >> i wonder if totally different but the people just tuning in who aren't as passionate of it as we are, have a million things going on will wonder is that really how the republican party thinks and maybe that was the intention of doing so. listen, we're going to have the panel stick around and talk about this. jimmy fallon greeting michelle bachmann with a song choice that includes the b word. what if she was a democrat? katie, tara and micah are here. do you think they're getting away with murder there at nbc? >> they always do. i mean, this is typical behavior towards conservative women, women in general who get to go into politics and michelle bachmann knew this would happen to her going into the race. this happened with the "newsweek" cover. i think she handled it with grace. she understands she'll be attacked this way but won't be a victim. nbc is going to do what they're going to do and there's not going to be consequences for their actions. >> put it this way, i don't think they should be accepting this, tara, do you? this is not the way you greet somebody. >> i think it was very disrespectful and i don't condone it at all. i think it's terrible actually. i do think, though, unfortunately, there's a double standard in politics for women and women from both political parties are often criticized and now even first ladies and to your point about just conservative women, i don't think that's true at all. look at michelle obama. if you google here, all these images of monkeys come up. the disrespect that's out there is really horrible and i think we need to continue to speak out and criticize when it's on both sides. >> right. it's very little uproar about it. in fact, it wasn't until last night, i didn't even hear the song when she was on our couch yesterday but micah, do you feel as though there's a double standard as well? >> there's no question but it's a sinking of political humor. this goes right down to the gutter. political humor is about the sharpness of comments. we don't do that anymore. it's the highest form of humor is on late night television. this is -- and i must say, by the way, i do not think miss bachmann even heard the song as she entered because -->> i can't make out the lyrics. >> but also there's an energy when you enter the studio and the energy was there and she was not put off by it. it was important. it didn't alter her presentation. >> it didn't. she actually had a very funny appearance. by the way, here's what jimmy fallon when he heard about the uproar, he tweeted this. i'm honored that bachmann was on our show and i'm so sorry about the intro mess. i guess that's it. i really hope she comes back. there he goes. is that enough? >> thank you, juliet. now to a story we've been telling you about. two weeks ago right before veterans day a law school professor at suffolk university named michael avery sent an e-mail to his colleagues slamming care packages being sent to our troops overseas. he said "i think it is shameful that it is perceived as legitimate to solicit in an academic institution for support for men and women who have gone overseas to kill other human beings. that e-mail was so inflammatory, it's sparked outrage not only among our viewers out there and professors as well at the school and now, one professor who was currently serving in afghanistan as part of the army reserves just sent his school his letter of resignation. joining us right now from afghanistan is u.s. army major robert ruffsage. good morning to you, major. >> good morning, steve. >> first of all, let's start with the e-mail that you sent to suffolk university. if you would, sir, read a portion of it. >> i said, i am writing to express my disgust over the comments that professor avery and resign my position as a member of the adjunct faculty. for almost a year, i have been serving in afghanistan in my capacity as an army reserve officer. >> so why did you quit? >> well, the response from the school was disingenuous. they said that he has free -- that he has first amendment rights and of course, everyone in the united states has first amendment rights. but you do not have first amendment rights protect you from your employer telling you that your speech is hate filled and not going to tolerate it. i as a u.s. army officer cannot denigrate the united states military without getting in trouble with my chain of command. we have standards and there are standards that should be upheld to give an example to the students. >> what prompted this was a mass e-mail to went out to people sew litesing -- soliciting toiletries for our men and women serving overseas. and then this michael avery guy that was a professor there got his panties bunched up and wrote it was shameful and essentially called you a killer. who is this guy, michael avery? tell us a little bit about him. >> well, he's one of the most powerful professors in the school. he has basically was very instrumental in getting the current dean put in place and he's very instrumental in getting people on the full-time faculty. it's a guy who went to the university of moscow during the vietnam war and frequently traveled to cuba to meet with fidel castro. >> yeah, and the school says he's got every right to say it. freedom of speech and stuff like that. doesn't it come down to freedom of speech vs. decency? >> you know, what really bothers me now, steve, is that if -- if everyone there has freedom of speech, where are the other professors exercising their freedom of speech and coming out and standing with me, standing with the soldiers and condemning these statements? >> right. such a good point. have you heard from any of your students? >> i've heard from a lot of students. i've heard from people from all walks of life that basically i've never met before just people who have sought me out to tell me good job, thank you. that's not what i'm looking for. the spotlight needs to be on the school. because no one from the school is condemning his words. if the -- if the dean doesn't agree with what he said, she should say so. >> let me ask you this, major, should the school fire this guy? >> it all depends on what the 75% and 85% is. if the things that you have to give up make what you're trying to accomplish harder to do, in other words reduce the deficit, why the republicans are drawing a line in the sand rightfully so, is because what the democrats are attempting to do is increase taxes which will slow down this economy which will increase the deficit, reduce tax revenues ultimately and increase government payments so you don't work against yourself. >> very good. >> whatever you want to say about rick santorum and where he ends up, he's never stumbled and he's sure of himself and has a great deal of experience. >> they also talked a lot about immigration and some of the comments by newt gingrich where he said that if there's an illegal who has been in this country for 20, 25 years, can you really just kick him out. can you really deport him? the blogosphere is burning up. >> what are you reading? what are they saying? >> a lot of them is prompted by the romney camp that said look at that, newt gingrich is calling for amnesty for 12 million americans. >> right. >> they didn't -- like, for example, mitt didn't turn around and michelle bachmann didn't turn around and jump on newt the way that mitt and perry went at it when perry came up on their stance on illegal immigrants and their tuition breaks for illegals in his state. >> the word heartless when you're going after people's values is a totally different story. >> 26 minutes before the top of the hour. let's tell you other stuff that's important. >> today is the busiest travel day of the entire year and by all accounts it's setting up to be a real nightmare. two storms, rain and snow in the east and more out west. stacy cohan from our affiliate is live at reagan national airport in washington, d.c. good morning to you. >> well, good morning. yes, there's going to be more travel this year. now, i know some folks say that's actually good news. it shows people are hitting the roads and taking to the skies but it's not great if you're one of those travelers. now, take a look behind me here at reagan national. right now, it's just wonderful. the lines are very short. people are progressing very quickly to where they are. i just checked the cancellation board, we only have a few cancellations that are actually to new york. may be weather related. we're not quite sure. things are going smoothly right now. that's good news. triple a says a 4% increase is expected in travelers this year but they're going to be paying a lot more. if you bought your ticket, you already know. a 20% increase in air fares, what is expected and if you're hitting the roads which over 90% of americans apparently do, there is also a steeper price at the pump. again, 20% increase. so more folks in the air. more folks on the road. as i've said for years doing this story, just pack a little patience. it's going to be slow. there's also going to be more law enforcement on the road in almost every state. they have special programs because this is a really busy time of year for accidents on the roadways as well. so good news, more people are traveling great for the economy. bad news, your trip will take you a little longer. >> even though you've said you've done this story for years, i feel like it's the first time. it was so fresh. >> well, thank you. >> ok. >> all right. >> that was a compliment. that could have sounded like an insult, brian. >> really? >> you know, romney performs well. i don't think it was his best performance but he performs well. i thought herman cain showed how little he knows about foreign affairs. that's not his strength but the others, the others know the issue. it's a very substantive debate in front of a very substantive audience, the american heritage foundation are two strong organizations and many in the audience have served in the administrations of nixon, ford, reagan and the bushes so it was not -- it was not a patsy audience. they basically are the best judges of whether these people are substance or not. >> "the wall street journal" did a poll with nbc and they say 52% of the country thinks the president's foreign policy, they approve of it. knowing that going in, do you think it was incumbent on those on the stage to show how bad it actually was and did they do that? >> well, i don't think they did that as effectively as they can. the critical thing is the willingness to basically after we've gone these two long drawn out fights in iraq and afghanistan to basically dismantle our military, you know, the world is a very unsettled place as we see in egypt and around the rest of the middle east today and the to start basically cutting out carrier groups and manpower is a great derogatory thing. we saw this in the post-vietnam period. it's what reagan inherited in 1981. cost us a lot of money to get back to the standard that we needed and i think that's what we ought to be discussing. >> speaking earlier of michelle bachmann, what did you make of, apparently as she walked out on the jimmy fallon show on monday night, they played a song with a title with the b word in it. and there have been some on the right and some on the left as well that say that nbc should apologize. jimmy fallon tweeted an apology. apparently the band leader, though, knew ahead of time he was going to play that. tweeted watch for this. what do you think about this? >> brian: three minutes after the hour. tell us what else is happening. >> juliet: a serious one, a bus crash involving a girl's high school basketball team in southern maryland. it crashed there sending 17 people to the hospital. police say a drunk driver and a pick up truck is to blame. 28 girls and four adults were on board that bus coming back from the game. they were playing in virginia. investigators believe the truck swerved into the bus, forcing it off the road. the driver of the truck, that's him, he was arrested for drunk driving. all of the girls are expected to be okay. and we don't have any info as of yet on the two adults. new details about the florida mother who disappeared the same day her case appeared on "people's court." michelle parker reportedly filed for a restraining order against her ex fiance, that happened in 2009. she claimed he smashed the window of her suv, he threw car seats in the road, and he warned her, quote, your day is coming. police insist smith is not a suspect at this point. parker's mother, she's speaking out and says she expects a major break in the case as early as today after telling a local tv station, quote, there is a lot of stuff going on. we can't tell you. the search for missing missouri baby lisa irwin grinding to a halt after six weeks. police admit they have no substantial leads, so they're shutting down their command post and taking several officers off the case. lisa's parents claim s was snatched from her crib. spoiler alert, we're about to show you who won "dancing with the stars." cover your ears and eyes. >> j.r. and karina! >> juliet: he's the iraq war veteran and soap star. j.r. martinez won the mirror ball trophy and he celebrated on jimmy kimmel live. >> when you were fighting in iraq, did you ever have any idea you would do this well on "dancing with the stars"? >> brian: it's going to be an uphill battle, but he is a solid third in almost all polls. so it's not done yet. things have somewhat settled down for herman cain after the month. >> steve: i noticed something kind of interesting on real clear politics this morning, there is an item that says governor sarah palin may come out with an endorsement before iowa and according to their calculations, it would be perhaps to endorse newt gingrich. >> brian: newt gingrich? >> steve: that according to real clear politics.com. >> juliet: coming up, michelle bachman greeted by the b word. the words to this song, it's one despicable word after another. this is jimmy nationallan's band. johnny carson wouldn't have done this. when did this kind of behavior become acceptable? obviously the president knows nothing, nothing about this. but if you're going to be funny, if you're going to be musical, be funny, be musical. don't be hurtful. don't be disrespectful. when you show a picture of the president, you're obviously going to be bringing politics into this thing. >> juliet: it was disgraceful and i think a lot of people on both sides of the aisle agree with that. is there any legal ramification? >> i watched this field closely and i think governor romney is in a position where he's got that background as an effective business leader, governor, turned around the olympics, and he's the person i think that could beat barak obama, which is so important for our country. >> steve: sure. well, a couple of days ago on the sean hannity show, mitt romney himself was talking about potential vice presidential running mates and your name came up. he said, probably 15 names, including kelly ayotte. when you heard that, what did you think? >> well, i thought my focus is representing new hampshire and that's a real privilege. but i think his point was that we have a very deep bench in terms of the gop. so many good leaders out there right now that are ready to make sure that we turn our country around. >> steve: but for you personally, that's cool! >> well, certainly i appreciated him mentioning me, but my focus is on serving new hampshire. i just got elected last november and we've got to get our fiscal house in order in washington. so we need a republican president to lead on that issue and i'm looking forward to working with that president. >> brian: as a republican, you know what happened to senator john mccain when he brought up amnesty and a path to citizen system and president bush's push for comprehensive immigration reform failed as two conservative republicans. now you have newt gingrich who, by the way, a dead heat in some polls in new hampshire saying, look, i'm for those people who are here long-term, illegal immigrants here long-term. i'm for leaving them together as a family union and not kicking them out of the country to boil it down real quick. what's your reaction to that? how will that fly with other conservatives? >> i thought that governor romney was very clear on immigration last night. he doesn't support amnesty. i agree with him on that. we don't want to create incentives for people to come here illegally. we're a country of immigrants. let's make sure that we have a way for people who want to contribute to get here legally, but let's secure our borders and not have amnesty or encourage people to be here. i support governor romney on this. >> brian: right now you can not support newt gingrich's feeling of leaving the long-term illegal immigrant families together in the u.s.? >> yeah. i think governor romney's position is stronger on this in terms of our immigration policy. >> steve: all right. senator, before you go, i want to ask you about something that's been burning up our in box today and that is a couple of nights ago, jimmy fallon, who hosts a late night show across the street at 30 rock, he had as his guest michelle bachman. there she is coming out. well, unbeknownst to her, there was a song being played with a very inappropriate title and uses the b word in it as well. just kind of interested in your reaction. apparently jimmy fallon and the guy who leads the band have apologized on twitter. is that enough? paychecks all because of super committee failed miserably. >> juliet: steve centanni has details. >> good morning. in another one of his campaign style trips that was officially not a campaign trip, president obama went to new hampshire yesterday, the first in the nation primary state. in manchester, new hampshire, he stopped in at julian's corner kitchen to make his case for an extension of the payroll tax break that expires at the end of next month. that's something that the super committee was supposed to deal with and didn't. the president wants to extend and expand the tax break and challenging republicans to stick by their pledge of not raising taxes and to approve the extension when it goes up for a vote in congress next week. it's yet another part of the president's overall jobs bill that's now being offered to congress in bite size pieces. speaking at a local high school, the president told republicans, don't be a grinch. don't raise taxes during the holidays. >> the american people are with us on this. it's time for the folks who are running around spending all their time talking about what's wrong with america to spend some time rolling up their sleeves to help us rebuild america and rebuild our middle class and give young people opportunity. >> the president was in new hampshire the same day his republican challengers were meeting for yet another televised debate. the gop field divided over the issue of the tax cut deduction. meantime, an extension of unemployment benefits is also set to expire at the end of next month. that's something the president supports. he wants to extend the unemployment benefits, but both of these items were supposed to be rolled into the grand deal the super committee was going to reach and they didn't reach any deal. so a busy street in boston in broad daylight, even more shocking, nobody stopped to help her. the surveillance video so disturbing, we had to blur out some of the stuff. one suspect tries to grab her purse, then three more join in, punching and kicking her as she struggles to hold on to her bag. the thugs eventually gave up and walked away, not one single person even tried to stop it. police now asking the victim or witnesses to come forward to help them figure out who did this. >> juliet: dr. keith ablow says it has something to do with the mind set thinking it's not actually happening. it's fake. a wife fed up with her husband's video game habit tries to dump him on craigslist and she offered him up for a small price. actually for no price. >> men saying oh, i'm house broke. i'm trained and i'll trade him places. >> suddenly the thought was serious and trying to give it marital counseling. >> juliet: the wife says she did it as a joke, but the response has been huge. hubby isn't
