People are looking for just as many reasons not to hire you as they are reasons to hire you. Gerri just opened, were taking you for a ride on the worlds tallest and fastest roller coaster. [screaming] it is right here in america. All that and more coming up on the willis report, where consumers are our business. Gerri our top story tonight big news for College Students and their parents. The department of education has been quietly putting colleges on a list for heightened scrutiny. Even curtailed federal funds to these institutions for years because of financial problems. But until today students and taxpayers werent allowed to see which schools pose the biggest risks to their own bottom lines. Here to shed new light on the College Crisis a assistant professor of business economics at king college. Charlie kirk founder and executive director of turning point usa. Charlie, i will start with you. What is the problem with these schools . Is it serious . Very serious. Many of these schools have been engaging in nefarious, at best questionable accounting practices. One of these colleges in massachusetts, Roxbury Community college, they stated oh, were not really sure what happened to some of the fund we received. This is a big problem. In my opinion i think this is government trying to get ahead of the ball here. Many of these colleges were enabled thanks to federal funds and cheap credit with the form of Student Loans over last couple of decades. Think parents and students should be very concerned but also understand a lot of these colleges were allowed to act in this behavior thanks to the federal government. Gerri so the department of education has two lists. One which is really bad and the other only sort of moderately bad. Youre looking at very bad list. There is range of kinds of behavior here. You mentioned roxbury which had big problems. They have been losing track of significant amounts of money but then there are other schools who are just not managed to file filings theyre supposed to make with the department of education. So that is having something very different. My question to you brian, why did we have to wait so long to get the information . List is helpful for students, parents and on the other hand there are risk with lists. There are schools on this list probably are not in very serious financial situation right now. The problem, youre on the list, youre on the list. That can paint some schools in overly negative light is. Gerri give me example. 43 colleges in minnesota, not necessarily because theyre in financial trouble but because they havent filed audit form. They should file the form but that doesnt mean theyre about to go under. Gerri a parent about to plunk down 46,000 dal for single year i want to see those list. They made the lists into serious, some not so serious. Charlie, get back to you for a second, why in your view did it take the department of education so long to get this information out . This is critical information for parents across the country . Never count on government to be timely with almost anything. I think we could all question why they are releasing it now but in my own personal opinion i believe were going to witness very close to what we saw in 2008 in the housing bubble a Higher Education bubble popping. Many of these colleges will start folding, similar to what youve seen last couple years. Started to see beginning stages of it. I think department of education is releasing the list, at least ones on severe side, hey youre in the final warning here. We may or may not be there to prevent this from happening a lot of these colleges going under. We can question what is going on here just like anything in government it will be not be done in timely effective way. Gerri bain company came out said fully a ired of this colleges and universities are on unsustainable financial path. Brian to you, is this a bubble that is going to pop just like charlie said . I think it definitely has that threat. We are moving in the wrong direction. Colleges have very high cost structures. Raising tuition to get there. Parents and students dont want to pay that looking overseas tuition to plug that gap in the short term. That will not last. Unless colleges change cost structure were on crash course for real problems for some of the schools on this list. Gerri makes me mad the department of education had all the information for years and years kept it behind closed doors and didnt tell a soul bit. I think mom and dad you know those parent at sweet briar, those young women at that liberal arts school great School Private school, major financial problems, they had no clue. At long as methodology theyre use something right i agree with you. But there may be problems with the methodology theyre using if the data is bad. Gerri department of education ted mitchell, what he said. Heightened cash monitor something not necessarily a red flag to students and taxpayers but it can serve as a caution light. Were watching these institutions more closely to make sure institutions are using federal student aid accountable to students and taxpayers. Charlie, to you, what would you do, i know youre not old enough for this, if you were parent of a student who was about to go into school, may 1st is decision day my friend. Mom and dad, students all over the country are picking school they want to go to. What would you tell parents tonight . I mean they have to start asking more questions. Demand the financials. Try to see the endowment structure. Look at longevity. A lot of these schools have been folding they really dont have very viable or respectable reputable board of directors or board of governance looking at financials asking hard questions. Good schools where dr. Bremburg teaches, kings college, they do right things. Those are Schools Parent should look at. Start asking, tough, difficult questions i think you will see better results. Scary out there if youre a parent, decision day and these schools gerri private schools having a problem. Forprofit schools having a problem. Five schools on year closed on average between 2003 and 2013. Gives you a sense what is going on out there. There is real culling what is going on out there. Brian, to you, some of the advice i heard from experts includes, for example, if schools are relying on just tuition dollars to fund 80 or more of their operations thats a problem. That is something parents should be aware of. Or if theyre discounting tuition heavily. If theyre giving you you know 40 off, 50 off, then you need to be aware. You want a school that is charging a price that is commensurate with the value adding for students. Students heavily discounting, students struggling to get tuition tuition keeps rising. If that is your only strategy, you doesnt have a good cost structure. Youre in serious trouble and day of reckon something coming soon. Youre exactly right. Gerri how many freshman is coming in. How big is the class. Thank you for coming on the show tonight. Check out my website, gerriwillis. Com for the full list of colleges in trouble. Gerriwillis. Com. We have the whole thing right there, the list of department of education wanted hidden. Now you can see it. Gerriwillis. Com. Share it with friends and family. Well, on to another story you will want to hear about this is a shocker. Popular Online Consumer review service, angrys list is in hot angies list is in hot water over questionable business practice, they are accused manipulating reviews in favor of businesses that pay for advertising on their site. With more, bob mass see, legal analyst. Thank you, gerri. Gerri i cant imagine anybody better to talk about this what is going on with angies list and what is this lawsuit all about . I looked at the complaint actually filed by a very rhett pewable law firm. Basically there are is multiple allegations. When you look to the meat of it the big part is fraud. Did this company conceal relevant information from the consumer who sy pack to get relevant information to the benefit of the vendors . If in fact theyre able to prove this type of case, this company could pay out a lot of money if the class is ultimately certified. Gerri this is what the lawsuit says, just to give you an example what theyre talking about. They say, quote, a plumber with a rating on angies list, all positive reviews but did not pay any Advertising Fees will be ranked below a plumber who did pay Advertising Fees but had worse reviews or ratings. This to me, boy, this cuts right at heart of the business at angies list, which is in the business of providing, good solid advice. How do you read it . Almost like everybody always said, Better Business bureau. You grow to them tell you about the companies. It is credibility and trustworthiness, gerri on this particular case is proven, bottom line all for naught. They were a fraud. They in fact misled consumers. People had the gold make the golden rules. People pay the money for the advertising even if there was negative impact. Good for this plaintiff, by the way, gerri. She was smart enough to go and get some legal advice, to find out, wait a second i find out i get a contractor who had negative reviews, he stuck me for money and she was smart enough to go to lawyer say, what is going on here, to the point that instituted this type of a lawsuit. As you know there has been some other problems the last few years with angies list. Gerri thats right. So i believe this will be the tip of the iceberg. Gerri we had a couple of other suits against an did is. Talk about those for a second angies. This was other kinds of issues. This woman you describing, she essentially called to complain about this person who she found on angies list, she was told this is how it works. If you advertise we put up positive reviews. I want to show numbers on the company i know you found interesting as well. Ad revenue dollars at angies list, 241. 9 million. Subscription revenues, not as much, my friend. What does that tell you . Almost, what 3 or four to one. It tells you again that almost, you know, when i saw that gerri yesterday, it is almost like it is designed to be deceptive. Its almost as if the way that it is set up is those people who will advertise more are always going to get the benefit. And the problem is if these allegations are proved to be true, then the infrastructure and corruption that is involved here because in this lawsuit, not only they are asking for compensatory damages, theyre also asking for punitive damages which is reckless disregard for the rights of the consumer that paid a subscription to rely on the fact they were getting reliable and trustworthy information. In addition they have asked for injunctive relief, sort after stop to say, stop this type of activity from happening. I have to tell you if the allegations are proven to be true, it really basically tears down the whole credibility of the company. I dont know how you come back from it. Gerri bob, i wanted to mention to you, we contacted angies list to get a response. Unfortunately weve just been told they will not respond on basis that theyre facing pending litigation and they dont want to go on the record bit. Thats okay. Gerri not surprising frankly. We dont know the other side of the story not yet. But, as you said, i think this is the third lawsuit in four years, all different topics. Well just have to wait and see what happens here. But i got to tell you, angies is an institution right . Yeah. Gerri there are lots of institutions built just like it on the web that offer advice to consumers. You dont know what is inside of that box until you use it. You know gerri thats the problem. I think and again these are allegations. They have the right to defend this case in court. Gerri thats right. To see how the evidence comes out. Ill tell you something the problem is that sometimes, not necessarily here, the lack of accountability, the lack of arrogance, sometimes they get to the point they think they dont have to respond to anyone. And some nice woman this plaintiff, who paid a little bit of money to a contractor, may have opened the pandoras box. Well have to wait and see, bob. I hope you will come back as we continue to follow the story. I hope so. Gerri thank you so much. Always a pleasure. Thank you for having me. Feldstein says the Federal Reserve needs to raise rates now or risk wrecking the economy. Were us now, Heritage Foundation chief economist steve moore. Great to see you. Hi gerry. Gerri lets dive into this. Marty feldstein leaving no stone unturned in this oped. He says we have to raise rates raise them now. On after the bell pardon me, he had this to say about why. These very low Interest Rates that weve had are causing all kinds of risktaking in the stock market and the bond market by bank lenders, which could come home and really be a problem. So, steve, do you agree with that . Is this long period of low low, low, zero rates, is it causing economic instability . Well i would have to just look at the evidence gerri, and this has been the weakest recovery from a recession that weve had. So all these people who cheer lead and say how wonderful the feds policy has been, it hasnt been very good for workers and hasnt been very good for pay raises. That is evidence point number one. Now the job market is strengthening, there is no question about it, gerri. Weve seen pickup in number of jobs over last 18 months. Here is only problem i had with what Marty Feldstein said. He said we have to raise rates because were at low unemployment. I hate this idea that somehow, when workers are working more that somehow that causes inflation. That is simply wrong. Marty knows that. What causes inflation with too much money into the economy. I believe right now as an insurance policy it is very smart for the fed to start gradually raising those rates to make sure we dont have recurrence of inflation given fact we have 3 or 4 trillion sloshing around. Gerri sounds like he want as quick pace, rapid rise raise the rates and raise them quickly. Do you agree with that . I think we should start quickly but i think it should be a gradual process if you get my meaning. Start with quarter of a point half of a point, continue to do it. Look, i dont want to choke off this recovery either. I think we have to be very careful about this. Gerri everybody talks about a delicate balance but let me tell you who is suffering about this. Let me tell you whos ox is goard. I know where youre going with this. Gerri seniors. Right. Gerri people already, not just any seniors either, steve. This is the thing that really fries my shorts. People who have done the right thing. People who saved their own money for retirement, set aside a nest egg, now theyre getting killed because there is nothing they can do with that money that will earn any kind of return. As a matter of fact, swiss re came out with a report saying there are some 470 billion that has been taken out of the hands of savers. That is unconscionable. That is a wealth transfer. And it is not a wealth transfer that congress approved. It is not a wealth transfer that you or i approved or any other voter. Youre saying you didnt vote for janet yellen . No i mean this is a problem, right. Gerri yeah, i am. This is almost taxation without representation, right . Printing money is a way of essentially taxing american consumers. And i agree with you. I think there is no accountability. I think we need to move to rules with the fed. Youre right. People that have been hurt by this are seniors. For seniors listening to the show. I know a lot do, you cant buy bonds. You cant buy bonds at 2 or 3 interest rate. You will not make any money. You have to shift out of bonds. Gerri shift out of bonds. Ladder cds . I dont think so. Money market account . Might as well stick it in your mattress. Who made off with all the dough . Wall street banks made off with all the dough. Of course. Gerri they have done great through this this is wealth transfer nobody approved. Youre right. Only half joking, stick the money under the mattress of the as you know there was an article in the wall street journal that is what a lot of people are doing now. What will you do put it in the bank and get a half a percentage point on your savings account . There is no incentive to save now, gerri because of these really low Interest Rates. Gerri no. Im old enough to remember when you could go in to get a cd and get 13 return on that. Gerri money market funds returned five before the economy crashed. Yeah. Gerri let me just say this about that. So we had those low Interest Rates. I know ben bernanke is fond of sayings, well we wouldnt have an economy if we didnt keep those rates low but that has been going on for a long time. Where is this economy gone . Nowhere, nowhere. We havent been at 3 gdp growth in what, nine years . Yeah. It has been a long long time. Boy would i take 3 growth. Gerri yeah. Were kind of inching toward that one issue one word of caution here, gerri, because it is important. We did, i lived through era with really high Interest Rates. Because that is when we had really high inflation. Tough give the fed credit for holding inflation at bay. Only had one or 2 inflation over past four or five years. That is the primary job of the fed to make sure we dont vin nation. Seniors will not benefit if we have five or six or 7 inflation as we did in the 60s and 70s either. We have to make sure we stay on that narrow road. Lets gradually raise these rates. As a way of giving seniors a better deal on their money. Gerri they need some kind of a deal. By the way, gerri, before we go. I have to say this. Last time when we talked about colleges and i suggested, remember this gerri . Maybe University Professors could teach one more course . I cant believe how many people said hell yes. It is about time gerri that is why you have to be on the show all the time steve. Just made my day. Folks keep those emails coming. I read everyone of them. Gerri yes you do. I read them too steve, thank you so much. Take care. Gerri we want to know what you think. Here is our question tonight. Is fed policy destroying your Retirement Savings . Log on to gerriwillis. Com. I will share results at theend of tonights show. Later in the show, down to the wire well have latest on fight for deal with iran. Next a new survey showed seniors laid off during the recession have a unique approach to staying on work. Half of workers between the ages of 45 and 70 who have been out of work for the past four years are still not working. Tony, author of four books on how to find a job. The creator of job search solutions. Tony welcome back to the show. Great to have you here. If youre one of those people out there. If youre one of those folks who has been out of work that long what do you do . Well the longer you stay out of work like that, the worse off you are. You have to be ready for a difficult road and know its going to be hard. But you have to take absolutely massive Massive Action. Weve talked about that on this program before. But most people dont take enough Massive Action to get interviews, to perform well on those interviews and realize that it will take a boatload of interviews and a very long time to do it, but you have to persist. Gerri you always say that you call everybody, you know, all of your friends all of your family, and you tell me tell them, im looking for a job. A lot of people are embarrassed to do that. How do you do that . It depends on how poor you are. If the feeling years ago it used to be that way. Its not that way anymore. Most of the world is looking for a job. If they have one, theyre looking for a better one. Its not your fault if you lost one. There was so much downsizing. Yeah. People dont mind that anymore. In fact i tell people to come up with 120 people that you know and call every one of them every 30 to 60 days and ask them if they know somebody that might be able to use you. And you would be amazed at the number of interviews youd get just doing that. Gerri i want you to respond to something i found disturbing. 57 said the biggest burden of getting a job. Employers they think theyre too old. How do you deal with that . Come on. Gut it out. The millennials think theyre too young. The people overweight think theyre too overweight. Tall people think theyre too tall. Cut it out. Everybody has this you talked about me attitude. Its just ridiculous. The jobs are out there. You have to overcome that and get a lot of interviews. You have to interview with people that want to interview with you. If they dont want to interview you for whatever reason find somebody else. The jobs are out there. All right, you say the jobs are out there. My guess is, when you get out out into the work force, you may not feel that way. You may feel the jobs numbers are misleading. And dont necessarily look at those job numbers. You have to look at your particular arena and the kind of thing youre doing. But most people and i understand, dont take rejection very well. And you have to realize youre going to get a ton of rejection for every hundred calls youll make youll only get a hold of ten people. And a hold of only one who is interested in speaking to you. Well if thats the numbers. Thats the numbers. And so in order to get two interviews, you need to make 200 calls. Quickly before you go, lots of people may have to switch their field. They may have to train for a new job. How do you make that decision . Yeah you have to you have to be realistic about is the reality of me getting a job in what im doing possible. If youre in the Oil Field Servicing business these days, it wont happen for another two years. So you have to be prepared to take one or two steps back and just be prepared for that. Remember what happened to michael jordan. He went from basketball to baseball. He was competing with basketball players. He didnt do as well. And probably didnt make as much money. Maybe he didnt need it. But he didnt make as much money. But you have to understand that youll probably have to take two steps back to gain some steps forward. But do it as quickly as you possibly can and then go to work really hard. All right, tony. Thank you so much for coming on. Tony. Hes the creator of job search solution. If you want the website. There it is. Thank you gerri. Coming up, the truth about the danger of big rigs on the highway. Next, no deal on Irans Nuclear deal program. Well have the latest on that. Gerri in just a moment well talk about the latest twist in the Iranian Nuclear talks. Now a look at other stories in the news. Indianas governor mike pence says he wants legislation on his desk bid end ofby the end of the week saying a new religious law does not call for discrimination. This is grossly mischaracterized by advocates who oppose the bill and also, quite frankly some sloppy reporting for the first several days. The program to put a dietician. Dietician saying amounts to an endorsement of the cheese. Supreme court caught in a web of arguments about whether an inventor can keep collecting royalties on a toy. . after the patent expired in 2010 two former federal agents that is are accused of stealing more than a Million Dollars in bit coins. Theyre caused of carrying out the theft while their agencies were having an undercover investigation. Those are the stories in the news tonight. Back to iran, world powers are blowing up. Are delayi their selfimposed deadline to seal a deal with iran. Enough progress has been made to extend talks through to tomorrow. Here with the latest, dr. Zuhdi jasser. A former Lieutenant Commander for the u. S. Navy. Is also the author of the book a battle for the soul of islam. Welcome to the show dr. Jasser. Great to have you here. Lets start with the news tonight. Talks will continue at least through wednesday. Is that good news or bad news . You know, we really dont know. The bottom line is surprise another red line as passed for our commanderinchief. We hear today the head of militia in islam is saying that the existence of israel is nonnegotiable. Our president tells us, words matter. While theyre pushing the deadlines, we dont know what the deal is. We know theres no oversight that theyre agreeing to. We know they want the sanctions lifted which is a card we can only use once. We dont even know what their longterm goals of their Nuclear Program is. Im not sure what were bargaining with. Yet we push a deadline even further, one discussed for years. Today, the other news today, Benjamin Netanyahu saying well you know, look getting an agreement whether theres one or not theyll have a Nuclear Weapon within a year. Is the deadline really this close . I mean, is their ability to produce a Nuclear Weapon really that close and should we try to get to the table with them if theyre on the brink of this kind of action . Well listen they should come to the table, gerri, because they have to. Not because they want to. And the president is really in search of some kind of legacy in his video to the iranian people was somehow the sanctions would be lifted and their economy would be great. Forget that money would be used to fund hezbollah and terror around the world. Forget that. The breakout time. That is netanyahus concern. Thats our concern. They can do it within a year. The fact it has a tenyear sunset. We have no idea what will happen after that. The facilities with thousands of centrifuges, they werent even allowing us to look at that before. So you think back to reagan, the trust, but verify, this is an inherently dishonest regime of islamic theocrats and yet were allowing them to guide these negotiations. And we have nothing to show for it. My next question was really can we trust them . You already answered that. Heres one thing i dont understand in these negotiations. Because whats coming out of iran, the language what they say about other folks in the regime what they make of israel what they make of other countries its a public statement. Yet we pay no attention to it. Its disturbing. Theyre insulting and threatening, you know, people who are our partners. Absolutely. And we can only pray sadly that their arrogance their imperialism is more than our weakness and our appeasement which our president is showing which will prevent them from having a deal. Because if we seal the deal heres a country now that were basically the saudis for the first time in decade are fighting a war outside their borders because they wanted to send a message, if iran gets Nuclear Weapons theyll probably get it. Because they wont take this seated. Unfortunately, were being too weak. The only thing that these thugs respond to or bullies is strength. Were not showing that. They have no reason to sign it at all. Thanks for coming on the show tonight. Disturbing news. We have no answers yet. Thank you. Thank you gerri. When we come back a former nfl superstar takes on do driving alongside big rigs on the highway make you nervous . They make you nervous. The dangers of tractortrailers next. First heres your consumer gauge with the numbers that mean the most to you. Have you ever seen a big rig truck fly past on you the highway . Sure you have. A new report from the Associated Press find that most big rigs go faster than their tires can handle. So why arent the tires holding up . And why are the truckers still going so fast . Host of the cars show doug browner explains. Doug, thank you for being here. So what happens to these tires at high speeds . Gerri, tires are really dynamic. The faster you go, the more the tire is changing president. On these big rigs, you go 70 miles an hour, these tires arent designed for those speeds. Things start to go bad quickly. They get hot. Youve seen those tires on the side of the road for years and didnt realize what was going on. Now, theres Something Like 14,000 fatal crashes a year in the u. S. This is astonishing to me. Where are we driving in excess of 70 miles an hour. Im not on the east coast. I dont see that. Come out west in california. Not necessarily in this state. But states like texas wyoming, south dakota have speed limits of 80 miles an hour and even more. Its a huge problem, especially as we said when you consider these big rigs are not supposed to do more than 70 miles an hour. If i saw a truck pass me, go past me doing 80 miles an hour in one of those states id be terrified. Its another incentive for truckers to drive faster. It means more money for them. Right . More quickly you can get the product to your destination, more money you can get. Many Trucking Companies limit the speed with which their drivers can go. If its not heavily regulated, youll have truckers go as fast as they can. Truck crashes, there was 52 that were raising the speed limit. Maybe in some of these states. Tell me how likely are you able to keep control of one of those big tractortrailer rigs if you blow tires . Just imagine a big rig that represents ten 15, the weight of 20 cars combined and you blow out just one of those 18 tires. Youre going to have a control problem that you cannot overcome in many cases. Youll see them jackknife. Cross lanes of traffic. Its a catastrophic failure. The feds have regulated passenger tire speed ratings for years now. Not all passenger tires and suv tires can withstand 100 miles an hour plus. But thats not true on commercial trucks. Theyre rated for only 70 miles an hour. This makes me more nervous on the highway. I have to tell you. Youre a registered mechanic too. Thats pretty impressive. I was working all day. Came down to help you. Thank you sir. Thanks gerri. Now on to a different story. Bank of america is accused of being part of a fraud scheme that cost an nfl player 20 million. Dwight blasted the bank for destroying and pulling him down. Bank of america denied it. Anthony. Founder of anthony consulting and independent financial and tax advisory firm. You know i look at this story, and i think it happens all too often. But were hearing about this one because its a famous person. Right . Yeah, ive been doing this for 30 years. A handful of times i came across this. Nobody knew about it really. Tell us what happened here. Bank of america is being sued here. Even though the broker wasnt working it turns out she was. It was his exwife at the time. She went out on her own to serve him better that was the story. We dont know what really happened. But thats whats being reported right now. Whats being reported right now, bank of america is denying any wrongdoing. Theyre saying the broker was not working for them at the time. But hes on fire about this. He lost a lot of money in this deal. What were they doing with his dough . The initial liability is with bank of america. Thats why he went there. Probably because bank of america had a big name. They were Miller Merrill lynch people. Hes handed off to his exwife apparently. And then the exwife leaves and opens up her own firm and then is dealing with her boyfriend, i guess at the time. Ridiculous. This was just like a garden variety fraud. Yeah. Lets here from him. Ive heard all the Horror Stories going through my career about half these entertainers. Things that happen to their money. I didnt want to be one of those people. I decided to go with a Reputable Bank at the time to stay away from those issues. Fast forward to today i find out we still dont have all the answers. It was a real real bad scheme that they did against me to steal my money. Gerri why is it always these ballplayers who get killed in these things . Theyre not paying attention. Gerri well, they have the money. They have the money. Certainly theres a liability exposure with bank of america. But, you know, let me just say this to people out there.
