To speed up play and get a new generation to watch. One thing i can say for sure their Attention Span seems to be shorter than the rest of ours. Gerri eyeopening report on real estate and what you get for your money in various parts of the country. 95 grand in san diego. That one actually surprised me. Gerri all that and more coming up on the willis report where consumers are our business gerri a Supreme Court ruling that could have a very big impact on your 401 k . The high court is hearing a classaction suit filed against a california based Utility Company called Edison International. Now the suit claims companies didnt act in their employee best interests by picking 401 k funds with excessive fees. Here to weigh in, ric edelman of edelman financial. Welcome, rick. I want to start with different topic and well get to edison in a second. We talked yesterday about the effort by the administration to give brokers a higher standard for client portfolios. They call it fiduciary, but nobody knows what that means . That is fancy language serve your clients best interests not your as best interest, e employers or broker, bank or Insurance Company you work for but your clients best interest. Treat every client like your mother. Gerri treat every client like your mother. There are tens of thousands of registered Investment Advisors do it every day. They dont have a problem with it . Why brokers so miffed fighting this tooth and nail . They make a lot of morn any selling products people . Selling people load mutual funds that charge five or 6 commission to buy it or annuity product or reit with 10 commission. Whole life or variable universal life or insurance life that has 100 commission. Selling these products because theyre immensely profitable for brokers and firms they work for. Oh, by the way the client doesnt count. Gerri i told you i agree with the obama administration. Mark today because it rarely happens but theyre putting this forward. This is something should in fact happen. However, you say they have gotten some things wrong on this . There are details in the white houses explanation of the crisis that are frankly wrong on technical level but so what. The big issue here is that the president is throwing the weight of the presidency behind the fiduciary standard. Meaning, that all consumers everywhere are now going to start to ask their own brokers are you in fact serving my best interests . Prove it gerri i think that is very hard thing to get an answer to but here is how much the administration were losing every year from conflicted advice 11 billion 11 billion. For 17 billion. For individual investors this is difference between comfortable retirement and squeezing by. Yeah. Gerri difference getting your child in harvard and going to a state school. This means real money. Were talking about your retirement being a third less than it ought to be. Those of us in the ria camp, registered Investment Advisors, im one of them were only ones who in fact serve the client best interests. So we need to recognize that issue. Gerri i want to get you on to the Supreme Court hearing. This is a says involving Edison International. Basically what is saying edison did not do good enough job for watching out for people in their 401 k . They charged fees that were too high. They didnt commit themselves to giving the best deals for the people who worked for them. Right. Gerri what is at issue here . Could this affect everybody with a 401 k . It does affect just about everybody with a 401 k , it goes back to the first story. Edison international hired a consultant hired a Brokerage Firm to bring in mutual funds for their 401 k . Because of that Brokerage Firm, that consultant didnt adhere to the fiduciary standard they provided them fund that were expensive, and underperforming and risky, and workers are saying enough. Were fed up. We want edison responsible because edison didnt do what is in our best interests. As far as im concerned edison is guilty. Every company that does it. Gerri here is the problem, we hear story about this over and over again. In fact the attorney brought this suit sued lots of other companies, successfully, gotten companies to settle. They havent necessarily admitted wrongdoing. Wouldnt it be better instead of bilking a bunch of American Companies out of money for all companies to step up and do the right thing to protect our assets . I dont blame Edison International here. They relied on consultants and brokers. They dont have subject matter expertise are funds best interests of workers. They hired outside help. They were duped as well as workers were. I feel badly for Edison International. Gerri but Companies Like edison pony up. It is obscene and abhor antiand put to a stop. How do you do it . Demanding those providing services to the 401 k , themselves be fiduciaries. If everybody has to serve the customer best interests everybody wins. Rick, thanks for coming on. Always good to see you. My pleasure, gerri. Gerri you said Something Interesting i thought before we came to air, how for some executives in particular people that run Small Businesses how are you productive because your goals are so amorphous. Easy when you tick things off. You should strategizing, blue sky thinking. Hard to take a lot of satisfaction in that. The if youre an entrepreneur, it can be hard to know. If your goal is to run a 10 k, you run the 10k and stop, right . Or check box operations part of jobs. That is not what entrepreneurship is about. Gerri no you have to do the big think. You have ways for to us get better at us. Productivity apps. There is an apfor everything. There are four apps we identified for productivity. The first is called, fttt. If this then that. Gerri if this then that. Okay. It is automation product. Automation app. What it does, answers that question if this, then that. If email comes from my boss, send it to every note automatically. Gerri i am a big ever note fan. If i treat something maybe post it on facebook at the same time . That app would help you do that very productively. Gerri that makes a lot of tense. Having to do this a million times is really a pain in the butt. One of funny ones is i cuckoo Charity Alarm clock. Im not a fan. I want to be on the record. Explain. All right. This is an alarm clock on your phone. If you dont get up, it automatically make as donation to a charity of your choice. So gives a whole new meaning, if you snooze you lose. All right. Work flow . Work flow is another automation app. What it does string together appears to do something more complicated. Just with the press of a button. Go to a phone, look at button. Work flow button says find the whale. Thats all you have to do. Dont have to scroll through all the navigation apps. Find the whale. I like that. Easy. Something called timeful . Timeful is like a assistant to schedule your calendar. You say to the app, you know, i would like to go to yoga class sometime in the next two weeks. It finds the time. It schedules it. It reminds you. Gerri wow. I like that. I have to ask you this on a personal level because you were somebody in my view, who gets stuff done. Always have. Ive known you a long time. What is your trick to doing that . It is having a staff that nags me to know end to get stuff in. Gerri come on now you cant push it off on your staff. Something in th makeup of your brain and how you operate helps you get everything e everything done. Thanks gerri, for the compliment. What our research, it shows productivity is really all in your head. If you take nothing away from your conversation, throw out the todo list. It is to easy to game. And it doesnt really make you more productive. If there is list you really wanted to have, it is not a todo list. It is a havedone list. At end of the day, tote up what you did. You will feel better. You will feel more productive. In fact because you feel more good bit you feel productive next day. I like that. I will try that. Have done, not to do. To do gets pushed and pushed. Thanks eric. News tonight on the anthem data breach. We talked a lot about this story. Now the Health Insurer says between nine and 19 million nonanthem customers were affected by the breach. Welcome to the Nascar Xfinity series. Gerri well gets this, governor Chris Christie was ordered by a judge in new jersey to put more money into the states public pension fund. Christie is expected to run for president in 2016, cut funding because after deep state budget crisis. Adam shapiro is with us. How deep is this trouble for christie . With just pensions, new jerseys unfunded liability is 83 billion. Dont just blame Chris Christie though. Every politician, every governor in new jersey going back 30 years is responsible for this. It is not just Chris Christie. Gerri how is this going to get resolved . This occurs all over the country, but new jersey has been ground zero . Ground zero. New jersey and illinois are what everyone in the pension world is watching. Nobody knows how it will get resolved. If it isnt fought it will be, there will be legal battles. But issue is taxpayers forced to ante up and fund promises made to Public Employees for the last 30 years . And retirees. Or, will retirees, be forced to take a hit and current state, employees, take a hit . Thats the battle. That is what the politicians created, whether right or wrong, when they offered these deals 30 years ago and going forward. Gerri so at the end of the day they were just too generous back then, not understanding what was going to happen in the years to come. Of course, these investments didnt perform as we expected, right . You are kind when you say they just didnt anticipate. They were, im not going to answer whether they were too generous or not because remember some Public Employees didnt take same salary increases they would have got so they would get larger pensions. What the politicians did not do, this is were the culpability lies, they didnt fund them. Had they made the required contributions that the state actuaries were telling them to make, part of this would have been alleviated. They also overestimated as politicians always did, the returns because that meant they would have to put in less. So politicians squarely are responsible for the mess were in. Gerri of course they are. Both parties. Both parties. Gerri of course they are. Knew jersey is part of the issue new jersey. Right. Gerri at least top 20 states top 15, Pension Funds are missing 50 of the money they need. Illinois according to state Budget Solutions is worst ever the worse. Just funded 22 . That means they have to come up with 78 . The governor is trying to deal with this let me put it in terms that well all understand. Every dollar collected in the state of illinois 25 cents, now goes to fund retiree pensions. Thats a problem. Because when you get above 20 cents, youre crowding out the ability to educate children, to build roads to re, build the l in chicago if youve been on the brown line lately needs to be rebuilt. These are really issues, and theyre he only going to get worse. Gerri only going to get worse. Mark my words it will come out of your pocket and my pocket. Taxpayers will get hit. But the other question we have to ask, is it fair to ask retiree whether the deal was good or bad, is it fair to ask a2yearold to take a hit . Gerri adam shapiro thank you for coming on. Great job. Good news to report on this years tax season believe it or not, your chances of getting audited by the irs are dropping in the lowest level more than a decade. Once more rates are falling for filers virtually in every category. That doesnt mean youre out of the woods yet. Here with details, steve moore chief economist for the heritage foundation. And Patrick Brennan opinion he had for for national review. Welcome to you both. Steve, i will start with you hey, buddy this is good news, isnt it . Whoohoo. Gerri i think its a good thing. Do you think its a good thing . Lo irs. And look, i think i will give a little accolade to the irs commissioner who said, look, we believe that the vast majority of americans are honest. They pay their taxes that they owe. I think thats right. The audit process having gone through a number of audits is a terrorizing experience. Way terrorizing. Youre very kind to the head of the irs complaining mightily he doesnt have enough money to run the irs. Maybe this is reason why we shouldnt give them more money. Gerri patrick, to you we talk about the irs and obviously they have been in the crosshairs over and over and over again this year. I want you to hear some sound from, a ceo, onetime ceo, who had something to say about what we should make of the irs these days. Listen to carly fiorina. Does the irs have a credibility problem . Of course they have a credibility problem. They have a credibility problem because of latest snafu. They have a credibility problem because of targeting of conservative groups which everybody continues to pretend on democratic side didnt happen but clearly it happened. Yes they have a credibility problem because parties they throw in las vegas, one thing after another. Gerri so that was carly fiorina. I mean she ran hp forever. What kind of reaction is this kind of issue getting on capitol hill . I think its a real problem for the irs. I will be less kind to the irs commissioner, John Koskinen than steve was. I mean he is saying that like theyre doing fewer audits because theyre focusing on worst offenders more but why would audits drop consistently across all categories . I dont know if it is too far to compare this to, how new york police department, bill de blasio doing a work stoppage, irs is unhappy with capitol hill. Unhappy Republican Congress is Holding Funding in check. I dont know if they do less will cost federal government in some ways going after serious offenders is useful. Gerri thats right. Steve, one of the details getting lost in the shuffle Something Like 5 of obamacare enrollees will have to stroke a check to the irs. 52 . It will work the opposite way. They expect to get money. They have to pay money. What went wrong . By the way, i want to go on the record gerri. Im not defending i say one little nice thing gerri sounded to me, my friend. I just report, you decide. You are right. I was looking at the numbers. A lot of people will send 500 more to the is. They thought they would get a tax credit. They owe the irs. Maybe obamacare was not such a great deal for taxpayers as they thought. Gerri absolutely right. I want a Quick Reaction from both of you to survey on nerd wallet. Average score of americans taking test on tax average what do you know about u. S. Taxes they score an f. Are you surprised about that . What does that mean . Not shocking. Only reason i blame the irs theyre reducing amount of call volume and not taking phone calls and help online calls frequently as they used to. That will not help americans with tax code. Ultimately blame congress for a complicated tax code. Gerri sieve . Gerri i will add to this a lot of irs agents themselves have to hire h r block to do taxes. This thing is so incomprehensible. Ive been doing tax policy for 25 years. I cant fill out my own tax forms. Im supposed to be expert. It is incomprehensible. Blow it up. Blow up the whole tax system. Start over. You and i could sit down ten minutes come up with something fairer simpler, more progrowth. It is an abomination. Gerri one of our Facebook Writers said Something Like that single page would be a great idea. Yeah. Gerri i want to get both of you, janet yellen today saying they take meeting by meeting approach to raising rates. In other words every time they get together they will reevaluate the situation to see if they should raise Interest Rates on the American People. Patrick, first to you, and quickly, how is this going over with the American People when this happens . This seems to me a political issue as much as it is a economic one . Yeah. Just depends on how disruptive it is in financial markets. Well have to wait and see. Whether that you know, whether it will substantially slow economic growth. How it will affect home sales, mortgage rates, that kind of thing. We know some of that. We dont know all of it ahead of time. Weve seen some perhaps, some boost from the feds stimulus over the last few years. And when that goes away, i dont think anyone will be honestly say they know it will happen. Gerri steve it is smoke and mirrors. To follow up what patrick is saying, smoke and mirrors economy. A lot is bolstered by easy financing, zero rates made possible by federal reserve. Janet yellen is the most important person on the planet, right . Yeah. I think she may be a more important than gerri how did you take what she said today . May be more important than the pope, my goodness. I think this is the worst kind of fed policy basically. What she announced today is the fed will make it up as they go along, right . So there is no rules. Everybody in the Investment Community has to guess what theyre going to do. That adds risk and uncertainty to markets. Why dont we establish a rule about when the fed should raise rates and when they wont . It would take so much speculation out of the market. It would add to growth. You know this, gerri but it is important for viewers to remember this, that fed Balance Sheet is approaching 4 trillion. 4 trillion of assets on the fed Balance Sheet. It is becoming the biggest commercial enterprise on the planet. Gerri no wonder there are calls to audit the fed. Steve, patrick, thanks for coming on the show tonight. Youre great. Thank you. Gerri we want to know what you think. Here is our question tonight. Is the tax code unnecessarily complicated . Gone on to gerriwillis. Com to vote. I will share results at the end of tonights show. Coming up, could giving your child a simple thing, peanuts prevent them from developing a dangerous allergy . That is next. More to owning a home than just a down payment. Brought in to try to fix the department plagued over the scandal of long wait times at the va hospital and falsified records. Well if you are in the market for a new home. You know the process is not cheap. From the mortgage taxes insurance, cost adds up. Our very own Cheryl Casone has been crunching the numbers on the best and worst cities to find a deal. How expensive can it get . A, do you have a job . B, what does your job pay . Thats where the numbers told the true story of whats happening in real estate in this country. You would not believe the salaries needed now in some cities that you would need to buy the average priced home. Im talking the median priced home in a metro area. Let me show you first the most expensive. What its going to cost you. Gerri let me guess. San francisco. I knew you would say that. Ive lived there. Its incredibly expensive. Me too. Thats the average. Thats your annual salary. You need to buy an average home. Im sad to see san diego because its a great place to live. That one surprised me. San diego got hit hard by the housing crisis. Prices are coming back. Metro area would include beachfront property. La not a big surprise. New york, not a big surprise. Boston 80,000. Metro areas, they compiled the data, when they looked at these areas, the most expensive ones arent a surprise to most of us. Wow, because prices have gone up, these prices have gone up. Ive lived in three of the most expensive cities in the country. Just saying. Lets look at what are the best places to move to. I assume there are deals. Bargains to be had. It depends on what you make. Your wages for a year versus where you want to live. I dont know if you want to live in these cities. The best place to buy you tell me, pittsburgh, pennsylvania. To buy a median priced home in that city, in the metro area, only 31,000 on an annual basis to buy a home. Cleveland, again they got hurt. They havent recovered. Cincinnati. Detroit, 45,000. There has been a recovery because of the Auto Industry in detroit which isnt a bad thing. They used to be number one on this list. Its all about real estate and jobs. You have to have a job to buy real estate, and the two go hand in hand. What troubles me about this is that were seeing wages stagnant year of ayear. After year. There are jobs created but bad paying jobs. The problem with a list of the cheapest place to live, you cant get a job there to buy the cheapest house. People who are savvy know all about that issue. Thanks for coming on the show. Great information and i love the real estate. I think its awesome. Enjoying it. Pretty fun. Thank you gerri. Gerri dont forget to tune in to making money with chairles Charles Payne. He will have howard schiller. A Ground Breaking new study that could prevent kids from developing peanut allergies. Fat from fiction carryon luggage. Here is the consumer gauge with the numbers that mean the most to you. Stay with us. Gerri well, you probably know peanut allergies can be deadly. Especially for young children. But a new study suggesting what we know about peanut allergies might be wrong. It claims early exposure to peanut products may be the key it ensuring kids dont develop allergies. Clifford works at the asthma care center. Welcome back to the show dr. Cliff. Why the change of heart . What was in this study that was so convincing . This is a breaking pivotal study done in england on over 600 children. These children were at high risk for allergic. Theyallergies. They have exma. When they gave peanut at the first year of life, they found a 95 reduction in the incidence to peanut allergy. If you have a high allergy risk, guidelines have said to avoid it. Now were thinking maybe a complete turn around that early exposure is the way to go in terms of reduction. Early exposure. Way to reduce the allergy. . but is it repeated exposure . Is it every day . Is it every week . How often do you do it . Can you do it with any child that has an allergy to peanuts or are you risking death . Peanut allergy is no joke. Its one of the most common causes of near fatal reaction i talk about ways to mitigate risk and get people prepared. I ask a lot of questions. But today were talking about a clinical trial. Were not talking about the real world. All these years weve been talking about prevent and go how to reduce things. We have one study that showed an 80 plus reduction in peanut allergy reduction in eating quantities of peanuts. We need to modify guidelines so we react appropriately to this information. Im seeing that 400,000 children out there in the us alone are estimated to have peanut allergies. Heres what i dont understand why does everybody have so many allergies today. I dont remember that growing up . Its an allergy explosion. If its not a peanut allergy, its asthma allergy. Also responsible for possible allergies. Egla ma, what is an allergy . If your child have a peanut or food allergy or suspect you dont see your pediatrician for proper instructions and evaluation reducing risk. There is no cure. Its prevention and preparedness. Doc, would you recommend that parents who want to make sure their kids dont have a peanut allergy give them peanuts . If theres any concern about food allergic symptoms of any kind see a specialist. This is a serious condition and demands the right amount of counseling education. The bottom line this study is pif toll. Pivotal. What weve been doing may not be the best advice. Thats the bottom line of this study. More studies to come. Speak to your allergist. This is a pivotal study. Thank you so much for joining us. Appreciate your time. More now on a story we told you yesterday the department of transportation said United Airlines does not to have honor those low priced airlines. What kind of precedent will this set . Ann, welcome back to the show. So we got the answer from the department of transportation. Theyre siding with the industry. Whats your response to that . Well, you know, this is a classic case. You know, in the battle between airlines and the consumers, united wins this one. But basically by a technicality. Here the dot is basically saying that because a lot of the people who bought this ticket were claiming their billing address was in denmark, that wasnt fair to united. This has happened all the time. Sometimes it goes the way of the consumer, sometimes the way of the airlines. I think, you know, it does set a precedent that unfortunately, you know yeah, its basically saying that maybe these fairs when theyre marketed in another country doesnt apply to the dot rules. . whats surprising about this whole thing is that there are so many cases of this. Right . So many examples and it seems to me the department of transportation rarely if ever steps up and yet they actually have a rule about this. And this is what the rule says. If a consumer purchases a fare, the consumer receives confirmation and the seller of air transportation cannot increase the price of the air transportation to that consumer, even when the fare is a mistake. So here we are. And, i mean, you know, we showed the ticket that one of the travelers received under this program, she got a confirmation. They took the money out of her bank account. It just seems unfair somehow. And i think if united had any sense of pr, they sure wouldnt have done this. What do you think . Absolutely. This is a case where the airlines could give a boone to the consumer and say hey, it was our mistake. Maybe it had to do with our Third Party Software not operating properly. Well honor these fares. Its pr. It seems like the airlines are thinking about their bottom line and not reaching out to consumer service. Its a huge mistake. I have to talk about another travel history since youre here. Carryon bags. . okay heres what were paying. Allegiance ten to 75. The fees go on and on. And let me tell you, i feel like they go up every time. What do you think that people dont understand about carryon bags . Well, i think thats one of the big ones. People realize or they think, hey, i dont want to pay a bag fee so ill carryon instead of check, but some of them theyre carrying upwards of 100 to carry on a bag. You have to do your homework and make sure you know the rules. The other thing, people think theres a standard size for their bag. Thats not true. Every airline is different. So if you use a certain bag on say jetblue and you fly delta next time, your bag may be too big and they might gate check it. Do your homework in advance. You mentioned the fees on some airlines will that become what every airline does . Are we on the way to having fees on airline bags . I never thought in a million years that jetblue would be charging for a carryon bag. They announced that. They will do it in the Third Quarter of the year. When theyre looking for money, thats a very convenient place for them to start looking. Anything is possible. Thank you for coming on the show tonight. Thanks for having me, gerri. Gerri still to come my 2 cents more. Next, Major League Baseball making major changes to speed up the game. Will it get fans fired up . It goes from two hours in 1981 to a little over three hours in 2014. Yawn. Just in time for spring training, listen to this the mlb is changing some rules to speed things up. With more on this, jt, the brick. Great to have you back. So i feel the pain of people who is these games are too long. What will they do to speed it up . Well, theres a lot of different rules. Theyll speed up the time the bart batter has to stay in the batter box. When a commercial ends they have to get ready to pay. Not another minute or two for the pitcher to warm up. Slight changes. Managers in the dugout. Theyll make those calls in the dugout and not come out and talk to the umpire. It will make a little bit of a difference. Be careful. Baseball makes the majority of their revenue off of television, and television wont give up 30 or 40 minutes of airtime and commercials because thats where the revenue stream comes from. But these games just get longer and longer, arent they hurting themselves with younger viewers who might enjoy the game but cant commit themselves to this kind of Time Commitment . You nailed it. Its all about the younger fan. Fifty years ago, 25 years ago, fans would go to the game and watch a baseball game. Now fans bring their cell phone. They have their head down and theyre looking at stats and playing video games. The younger fan does not have the Attention Span of the fan who helped build this game. So baseball this is a slippery slope. They want those fans to come to the game, but they know they want to be entertained constantly in the concourse looking at their phone. So i dont think this will make for Better Baseball fans. It will make for a baseball fan who is looking at his watch as he walks into the game and wants to leave in two hours. I think part of the problem is these massive stadiums. When i was watching baseball, it was a field in cincinnati. You could see everything every player did. If you go to boston, funnyfenway, you see whats happening. Theyve tried to monetize the sport its almost impossible to watch. Lets look at football for a second. When you watch a football game. Theres a nohuddle offense. Forty seconds in a huddle. Now, its a speed game. When you go to an nba game, it will end in a couple of hours. You mentioned fenway park. I grew up with my dad taking me to yankee stadium. When i go to the game, i cherish that time with my kids and my dad. I dont look at my watch and want to get out of there. When you watch it on television, you want the game to pick up a bit. When youre watching the game, you dont want a threehour game or a typical yankee game that could be four hours long. Gerri but thats not a bad thing in that case. Is this going to affect the game itself . Is this going to have repercussions that you and i arent even talking about yet . I dont think so. Still baseball doesnt have a clock gerri. Youre supposed to go to relax when you have a baseball game. Get a beverage. Have food. Take your time and tone everything down a bit. I dont think it will affect the game. But i think fans will understand that when theyre in their seat at the ballpark that Major League Baseball is concentrating on the pace of the game and they want to enhance the experience for the fans. So i think i its a great day for baseball. By speeding up the game, everyone will benefit. Good idea. Thank you. Now, we want to hear from you. Is the tax code too unnecessarily complicated .
