Expert, carl brower from kelley blue book. He joins us from irvine, california. Welcome back to the show, carl. I was looking at the numbers. Gm has recalled Something Like 28 million cars this year alone. On monday, 8. 4 million, an amazing number. What are the chances if im driving to my destination on the july 4th holiday somebody out there, me or somebody i am driving alongside will have recalled car and not know it . The chances are probably pretty good with all the cars out there. You will be fairly close to one at some point that either has been recalled or is waiting to have its recall addressed because it has inbeen fixed yet. Gerri you know, i think people forget rentals. Rental cars out there are also at risk. Is there anything being done about those cars and getting those cars fixed . That is an interesting question because that is really been raised, the visibility of that issue has come up because of all these recalls and all the idea is that you shouldnt renting cars to people that have recall issues that need to be addressed but there is no law right now that keeps rental Car Companies from doing that. It has been in discussion for a while. There is kind of a standoff. The manufacturers are fine with that law but they dont want the rental car agencies to sue the manufacturers for money because of out of service days they need to get the cars fixed. So there is this standoff. As often happens in political legislation it is causing a stalled, stalemate. Gerri consumers lose out because maybe you dont know. Look, the reality is, plenty of people get informed about their own cars and do absolutely nothing about it, right . They dont take right action. They dont take right steps which could have tragic consequences. Were going to later in this block talk a little bit about these airbags at issue. The ignition switches that dont work. What you can do if youre worried this weekend on the highways. But the numbers that were seeing on recalls now, reaching into chrysler, other companies, not just gm cars. What is it about airbags . Why arent airbags not deploying . Is this a Sticking Point for the industry as a whole . Well, the problem with the airbags is there are only three suppliers make them for the whole planet basically. So this one, takata, is one of the big three. If they have got a problem, it kind of has perpetuated throughout the planet on a lost cars, millions an millions of cars and, you know, airbags are a tricky thing. Theyre this explosive device that is meant to be a safety device. So you can see there is a bit of contradiction there they have got to make sure theyre working properly. Either going off with the right force. Theyre not throwing things at you besides just the bag that is supposed to inflate and stay in place. So its a problem. Unfortunately it is like the gm ignition recall in that it is kind of perpetuated over a long period of time. But i think because of the visibility on the gm situation, it is raising visibility for other lingering issues, people kind of know about but takata is like, we better fix it. Gerri we have to ask tonight, how many more gm recalls . Are they done . Are there going to be more recalls . You know people keep asking me that. Of course two weeks ago, i think were probably through the worst of it and then they added 8 million yesterday. I have taken the position i will no longer predict how many recalls are coming. Gerri the big shocker, the announcement of monthly seas. The industry as a whole doing pretty well. Gm most of all. Look there were forecasts out there from edmunds and other sales, sales will crater for this company. That is not what happened . Why . No, no. The cars that are being sold in dealerships right now from General Motors are exceptional. Theyre very strong product. Gerri except for the fact they stall out and people have died in them. That is small glitch in your rhining, my friend. No no. Those were elder cars. Those are cars like 10 years old on the recall list now for months. But gerri they have also recalled some new, some newer vehicles. A smaller number of newer once. Gerri there have been some among the total. Much smaller number. Most people look at new cars and say, look, 10yearold cars produced under 10yearold General Motors theyre not same as modern gm and cars theyre producing. Plus the reaction gm had. Mary barra has been extremely aggressive taking care of this issue. You look at what shes done. I dont know how much more you could have possibly done. She has a very generous the goal is to keep people safe, right . The goal is not to have a pretty public face. By that i dont mean a female public face. I mean somebody who is presenting well but the goal is to keep people safe and that is still obviously in question. We talked about the recalls, and i asked you will there be more, still unclear. Ive heard some people say that the reason it hasnt affected gm sales is because the recalls by definition got people back into the dealerships and they started seeing other cars and decided to go ahead and trade up and buy. You know the economy is kind of in a situation now where people can finally open their wallets in some cases. Is it possible that the sheer fact of the recall is actually helping them. Are you suggesting that theyre recalling cars to sell more cars, gerri . Gerri yeah. I think there has been a little bit of that going on. I think there is benefit from people coming in. Average car on the road is over 11 years. When you go into dealership to get it repaired youre seeing vastly improved vehicle in terms of fuel efficiency, safety technology. Gerri good point. There is probably benefit to the dealers involving all these recalls. Gerri it is interesting that gm, impact in the marketplace has been so muted compared to toyota which got hammered for having problems only four years ago. The unintended acceleration issue. Carl, well have to leave it there. Thanks for coming on tonight. Very good to see you. Great talking to you. Gerri well do something tonight we usually dont do. Were going to repeat a story because some of you asked us to and frankly, well it can save lives. If your car stalls on the highway, would you know what to do . Were going to show you what to do during a high speed emergency. High speed decisionmake something what race car driving is all about. So we went to a private racing club outside of new york city. We had a driving expert show us on camera handle a high speed emergency. Remember, there is no reason to panic. Just stay relaxed. It is very simple to restart the car. Ari straus, the president and ceo of monticello motor club. It costs about 100 grand to join, but then you get to race your sports car around the track or take out one of the jaguars, ferraris poshes or other porch or other high speed machines owned by the track. The deadly stalls from General Motors in the past few months involve a car that still used an ignition we wanted to demonstrate a key start first. We use ad Toyota Tundra that does not have a stalling problem. So ari simulated it by turning the ignition key from run to accessory. That is what happened in the gm cars because of the faulty ignition switch. Tragically, for the gm drivers the ignition switch who have moved out of run on its own and drivers had no warning. Watch what happens when ari forces a stall. If the key moves out of drive into accessory position, the car is stalled. I lose my power steering. It feels a little strange and i still have cars around me. First thing i do is relax. Number two, throw it in neutral. Number three. Restart the car. Four, put it back in drive. Gerri ari thinks one of the reasons that some people crashed when their gm cars stalled they didnt know the engine had turned off. He says many people dont know what a tachometer is. But if it goes to zero while youre moving, chances are your engine is turned off. Ari says those drivers thought there was something wrong with a steering and brakes. This is when someone might panic because the wheel feels heavy. Remember you can still steer the car. No reason to panic. Put it back in neutral, start it up. Keep my eyes on the road. Put it back in drive and go. Gerri one caveat. You can still steer, that is if youre Strong Enough to wrestle the car to the side of the role. Power assisted steering and power brakes exist for a reason. But heres something really important. You must make sure you knock the automatic transmission into neutral or the car will not restart. Watch what happens when ari tries to restart a moving car without putting it into neutral. Im in accessory mode. I try to restart it, it is not starting. The steering is tough. This is when people panic. Dont panic. Stay relaxed. If i cant restart it, it means i havent put it back in neutral. Put it into neutral. It is restarted. Put it back in drive. And now i continue on. Gerri but since so many new cars dont even have a key, they start and stop with a push button we wanted to show what you happens if you need to turn off a push button car, or restart one. Watch. The engine just stops. Ive lost power steering. It says select neutral when starting. I put it in neutral. Push startstop. And keep going. Gerri here is Something Else that is important. Not all push button cars operate the same way. Some require you to push the button twice in two seconds to turn it off. Others require you to hold the button in for two seconds. You have to check your owners manuel. The important thing whether it has a key, whether it has a push button start, to stay relaxed and keep your eyes up as much as possible. Gerri if you think your car is running away from you because the accelerator gets stuck or the floor mats get tangled or something goes wrong with the engine, you should first try to put it into neutral and calmly pull it over. Putting a runaway car into neutral preserves your power steering and power brakes. Important information you need to know. Now, ari says you should practice restarting your car in an empty parking lot or other place where youre unlikely to hit another vehicle. Now news on another recall. Listen to this. The child car seat maker graco, is recalling nearly two million seats. This is the biggest such recall in u. S. History and comes after a fivemonth spat with safety regulators. Graco recalled 2. 4 million toddler seats earlier this year because the harness buckles can get stuck but refused to recall the infant seats until now. Some parents had to cut the harness to get their kids out after they got gunked up by food or drinks. Graco is replacing buckles for free. Still a lot more to come this hour, including your voice. Your voice is important to us. Thats why during the show we want you to facebook me or tweet me gerriwillisfbn or send us an email at gerriwillis. Com. Also ahead, an up start airline plans to start a price war on air fares to europe. How about 50 off london or paris . July 1st, not a good date for parents and students with student loans. Well have those details coming up. Hey, buddy . Oh, hey, flo. You want to see something cool . Snapshot, from progressive. My Insurance Company told me not to talk to people like you. You always do what they tell you . No. Try it, and see what your good driving can save you. You dont even have to switch. Unless youre scared. Im not scared, its. You know we can still see you. No, you cant. Pretty sure we can. Try snapshot today no pressure. Gerri are you sick and tired of skyhigh travel costs . You can partly blame uncle sam for that. No kidding. Under the guise of protecting consumers, congress is trying to block Norwegian Airs low cost flights in the u. S. Karn the government get away with this . Travel expert, mark murphy, founder of travel pulse. Com is here to explain. Mark, welcome back to the show. The government wants to sand in the way of me paying 400, 500, 600 less for a flight. What are they thinking. Who knows what theyre thinking. Beyond ridiculous. Im fed up where something good snaps to increase competition which means more jobs. People can spend less on the flight, spend more on the ground yet you will try to block that . That makes absolutely no sense. The examples theyre giving make no sense as well. So im really infuriated about this. Gerri lets look at some of the numbers. Look at this, so, basically this company, Norwegian Air wants to launch 225 flights from the u. S. To europe this week. Maybe 20 years ago i could pay 225 bucks to go to london from new york but not anymore. Right. Gerri give us an idea. Drill down with us a little bit how much the savings could be. The savings on average, depending on the gateway you go out of could be 50 . Gerri oh. Imagine as a consumer, 50 . The fares youre talking about will be entry fares and they will be more off peak fares in terms of travel times. So those domestic carriers flying internationally, those fares are coming down at that time too but they will still be on average about double Norwegian Air is proposing. Norwegian air is trying on long haul side what southwest and jetblue doing on the domestic side, bringing lowcost travel to the masses when it comes to International Travel which we have not yet had in the u. S. At least in my time frame of almost three decades in the business. Gerri take a look at these numbers. Those cheaper flights, london to new york in september, what they want to do is offer a flight for 720 bucks. Compared to average of 1149 for airlines like british airways, virgin atlantic, air france. Here is what the ceo of that company had to say. He said they, meaning American Airlines generally have protected environment for high prices. They hate that we will have introductory fares for 99 bucks. What do you make of that comment . Well, if im the domestic carriers that are flying transatlantic, i would hate it too because theyre going to make me compete more effectively on price to maintain my profitability. Lets keep competition out if we can if were the legacy carriers. On the other hand he has a great point which they dont want him in, theyre doing everything in their power to keep Norwegian Air out. Keep in mind they have been flying between the u. S. And europe for about a year. What is happening it is about this per mist and getting this permit approved so they become a permanent member, if you would, with the open skies agreement between the e. U. And the u. S. And then they can compete headtohead with anybody. Gerri well, open skies, open smies. Im not seeing it as you said beginning of interview. Does this have something to do with unions . Interesting you say that, yes. What the unions are doing, theyre pushing back on it. Theyre getting together with the management of the airlines. How interesting is that . The Airline Unions which always done battle with the executives on airline side are coming together around this topic to try to blunt competition. I dont blame them but former secretary ray lahood as lobbiest going in and trying to protect our communities and everything else. Gerri oh, come on. It is capitalism. Go headtohead. Gerri everybody combine who wants to combine. Theyre keeping out competition. What does that mean for us . What does that mean for consumers . It will mean higher prices. Big go. So if youre a traveler, write your congressman, write your senator. Tell them to stop blocking what is considered competition because it is food for you as a traveler. Good for you as a consumer. Keeps more money in your pocket. Guess what . You have more money in your pocket and more things to spend on, that is good for the economy as a whole. Lets get with it, folks. Are we trying to slow the economy . Are we trying to stop competition . Are we trying to get moving . Were what, five 1 2, six years to this muck. Lets go. Gerri thanks for coming on. Well continue to follow this. This is unbelievable. Thank you. Thanks. Gerri now we want to hear from you. What are you doing july 4th weekend . Are you staying home or going away . Interest rates on their loans are rising. I mean federal loans here. Were covering everything you need to know with the Senior Vice President for the princeton review. He is also the publisher of, paying for College Without going broke. Rates rising rob, by how much . 8 . Fairly mild but the rates continue to creep up yearoveryear. Gerri show the detail. Stafford undergrad is going up to 4. 65 . Stafford graduate, 6. 21. Mom and dad, bad news on plus, going up to 7. 12 . This seems pretty onerous. What does that mean as practical matter month to month . 4 more every month for each 10,000 a student will take out any of those stafford loads and gadd and undergrad and parent plus loan. Gerri if youre already crushed with Student Loan Debt as so many people are, it is not good news. It is not great news. One of the things happened last year, july 2013 and july 2014, the federal government tied the Interest Rates directly to the market, to the 10year treasury bill. Well see this same discussion come up july next year. Gerri oh, great. Thanks for telling me that. There are caps though, im pleased to tell you there are o so high. Those levels are skyhigh. Undergraduates, can go up to what, rob . 8. 25 and graduate 9. 5 . Gerri mom and dad, 10. 5 . Only go so far, so fast. A lot of people dont want to see that. Doesnt apply to everybody, the increases were describing to everybody, correct . That is true. Those loans taken out before july 2014 you lock in old interest rate. For 2013, 2008. Wherever you came into college and exit those loans, those are rates you lock in for the whole life the loin. For students this year this is the percentage they lock in at. Gerri what your advice for people who are crushed with debt and trying to do everything they can to keep it at lowest level possible . Couple of things. If youre going to take out student loans, you have to do your homework. We talked about this in the past. Whether they are subsidized stafford loans or subsidized perkins loans which can be a great benefit to those that need loans on undergraduate level. Do your homework to find out about those loans. About private loans out there as well which have, much less kind percentage rates for students and families. Gerri do your homework. Here it comes. Prepare yourself. Rob, thanks for coming on. Good to be here. Gerri well, coming up, weve got hot properties, new homes and condos are going green. See how the latest amenities could increase the value of these properties. Executive chef lauren loren is here to cook up the best barbecue ribs you ever had. He shares hess recipes that. Is the cool thing. Stay with us. Barbeque ribs they will look like this after they come off the grill so first take the ribs and grill them in between. Put everything in the pot. What you have here . Catch up . Dijon mustard, garlic, brown sugar salt and pepper. That comes out like this after one hour reduction in then the balsamic gives us sweet flavor with the brown sugar. Braise the ribs said and put them back onto the grill. Gerri we painted it on . You do it more than once . A. Yes. We service on the outdoor space. We also do a grilled potatoes salad. Gerri i never knew that you could grow potatoes. Do you boil them first . Yes. It gives them some nice marks. Until they are ready. There already cooked so you just give them flavor. Then the dressing is in dijon mustard that i finished off with some blue cheese crumbles and some bacon and then down here is a the blaze of glory cocktail that has pomegranate juice and pop rocks around the rimm. Gerri i only had those when i was the kid. Is filled with you cannot drink. , but theyve heard backyard stuff those many burgers there on the video of around the country were about ready to open up is of great locations in chicago and orlando. Gerri and you are expanding . Red and white and blue all over it. But this is incredible it is a letter of speech sponge cake and then soaking it in the berry juice it is the very patriotic cleared desert with good flavor. Gerri did you just grab a spoon its out. Gerri number one thing not to forget . We had a barbecue this weekend is not simply you have to plan that. I forgot their ribs. Dont do that. [laughter] gerri there is the safety issue. And not to have too much oil but to let it flare up but make sure everything is done in to pull off the of bone and everybody will be happy. I would be very happy with less. Gerri let me try of little bit of this. We will feed the audience. Think you. I love to grill stake in it to be used for other vegetables great flavors. In thankyou to home depot and when it comes to realestate the shelling out big bucks to attract high network buyers to locally built cabinets fit to hotbed we will ask of question is said wirth said . We have cheryl cassone. What do you think . Talk about barbq and food that this is where they come to buy but it is about of the home. We took some video earlier. Take a look at some of that video. Everything from recycled wood, Energy Efficient windows not all new construction has that. Take a look at what you get. 02 condominiums in one building it is an old motorcycle rides but one of the pieces is 6 million coming 3300 square feet in then for 3 million on top of this the penthouse 1,640 square feet where we stand right now is the garage space that is very valuable here in it and manhattan why this gigantic, is being put on behind me also earlier today we were on the roof sweeping views from all of the property it is not just about being green a greenstone verses a brownstone but the proximity celebrities are coming out out, ceos, one thing we found out today is the seller, us a developer will be offering a tesla vehicle with the 6 million purchase price. This is the garage we will put that then the charging station. Not only is it a Beautiful Day but this area will hit the price levels we are seeing in manhattan and that is the surprise but of very young neighborhood we are standing in. Gerri i am shocked at the prices. Who have done a great job to describe what is going on. Think you for bringing us this story. We appreciated. Gerri all eyes on the fed as investors looking at Interest Rates are finally rising. Looking and certificates of deposit you wonder how long to locking your rate and if you can cash out early. Here is what you need to know. Do they all have fees for cashing out earlier . It is pretty common. 2c it is important for investors to be aware of the penalty before you sign. I dont think it is a stream consciousness of the investors but when Interest Rates go up there will be a lot of investors looking and that is with the run into the penalty. Gerri what shocks me if your cd it is five years six months worse worth of interest and as i said they did in to your principal . Absolutely. Quintuple of the surveys that they of the cases they will dip into the principal if the accumulated interest is not enough to satisfy the penalty. If you have a fiveyear cd but 10 months into the term you cash out early . He dont have enough accumulated interest to satisfy the penalty by dipping into the principle that violates the very reason why they choose them in the first place but yet the early blister all penalties can do that. This brings up the of question in the era of Interest Rates so those cds cds, but paltry in six months. Lot of people may be thinking i want to look get out. What steps should they take today to prevent that . They have had their eye on this environment for of all time. We have seen is a preference not just shortterm cds but savings accounts they are positioned pretty well for that day with the Interest Rates if you are invested in a longterm maturity to be very careful of that penalty. He felt like to start eroding of principle. With the minimal penalty will not take much to recoup that pretty quickly. That is the comparison would make earnings versus the penalty then you have an idea if it makes sense to jump out of that cd but a lot of people not be too excited given the likely scenario are there other investments people should get into . For the economy dependent investor it is important to realize you get it, not just from the cash investments but the range of investments with a diversified portfolio. What gatt does it dividend stocks with of weld diversified portfolio you could will get a diversified portfolio. Gerri great advice. Thank you. Are you skipping out early to watch the world cup . Usa. Usa. And most advanced to the quarter finals and rich edson skipped out early today but you were still technically working . Exactly. That was pretty frustrating the last 12 minutes u. S. Had an opportunity we thought it was over that did not happen and were waiting for an extra half time the goalies have kept us in this so we have a little time now there we go up to a halfhour of extra time we are with pennsylvania avenue 1 mile down the president obama is watching at the Eisenhower Executive Office building by the white house. The heat index is approaching 99 degrees they have misters, bottles of water even city buses with airconditioning lined up if you need a timeout you can take it. Says frustrating but still our goal lee keeps us in its. Thousands of people are hearing and they will stay for this. Gerri great stuff. We would love to be with you. Figure that out.
