President trump tweeted out that for everyone of these ceos on the Manufacturing Council, that would leave, he would have another one that would take their place. A few hours after that, here inside of trump tower was asked about the ceos they were leaving, he contended they were quote leaving out of embarassment he says, because they were making their products outside of the country. Now the president has a different take on this essentially, trying to contend or trying to suggest at this point that he is doing them a favor by ending not just the Manufacturing Council but also another wider policy group. Here was his tweet to that end a little while ago. He says, and i quote, rather than putting pressure on Business People of Manufacturing Council and strategy policy and forum, i am ending both. Thank you all was his parting message. Now the president has yet to dom meant today on his remarks yesterday from inside trump tower about charlottesville, how he said there is blame to go around on both sides but his Vice President , mike pence, is standing by the president. Here was pences comments last hour from chile. What happened in charlottesville was a tragedy and the president has been clear on this tragedy and so have i. I spoke at length about this heartbreaking situation on sunday night in colombia. And i stand with the president and i stand by those words. Trish, the white house is trying to push this message through its surrogates that the president was right when he said that there are blame to go around on both sides as it relates to charlottesville. However, when you look at his colleagues, republicans who are senators, republicans members of the house, by and large, they are not Standing Shoulder to shoulder with the president on this one. Trish there is no room for it. You cant be giving cover like that. He gave a good statement the second time around. You should have stuck to that. Trish feeding the media, feeding this narrative of him. He should have shut it down and move on. He was there to talk about infrastructure, why would he do it . I dont know. If he was asked to comment on it, repeat what he said the day before which was pretty darn good on monday. I dont know. My sense is, inside donald trump or inside Donald Trumps white house, particularly in the form of steve bannon theyre is a sympathy for the socalled altright. The altright is not conservative. They are fringe players trying to attach themselves to the conservative movement to get credibility. They are white supreme sifts and neonazis and kkk members, people stand what america is stand for, which is embodied in the opening words of the declaration of independence and all men are created equal and endowed with certain inalienable rights. I thought these were on shaky legal ground to begin with there. Is obscure federal law that governs advisory coins like this and requires members to file ethics reports and financial disclosures, none of which i believe was being done with these. Frankly the president doesnt need a formal group like that in order to have the president can pick up the phone invite into the oval office or into the west link anytime he wants leaders of american industry to pick their brains. We need members of the Business Community around him. He can not denounce this behavior, he can not distance himself from the White Supremacists fast enough or hard enough. I got feedback from twitter followers and saying you have not turned. To be comparing civil war hero to first president of the United States, or to Thomas Jefferson, i mean clearly Thomas Jefferson and George Washington represent something very different about america. General lee, on the other hand, represent something that was very much a dark time in american history, and something that were still to this day dealing with the aftermath of. So why glorify it. You cant erase history, but do you really want to flaunt that history . I mean, you know, youre an africanamerican. Im not. Im not thrilled with the statues. They represent the dark time in america, the dark stain of slavery. As student of history i do understand the importance not turning backs on history. The problem i have the moral equivalence the president seemed to draw between the statue of general lee, talking about our first president George Washington, the great founding father of our country. We can have a good debate whether confederate statutes should remain in place. I dont think this is area the president should be wading into. Trish it doesnt make any sense. Harlan, he was doing fine. I leave it up to municipalities, local governments, when you have statues on federal land well make a decision on the federal level, let you make your own decision. Then he took it a step further. Does that mean you will take down George Washington because George Washington was a slave owner. George washington represents a very different thing in american history. The civil war is not a time we want to relive. Well, and to his point it is a valid question to raise, do we want to relive a period of time when certain people in our society were owned by other humans . You know, that is the logical extension of this line of thought, if were going to pull down statues. Now let me say trish can i jump in real quick . Point out to the viewer. A lot of these statues came about during the jim crow era. Yes. Thats right. Trish there was, there was a reason, shall we say, why they were putting these statues up. Guess when they also came about . 85 of thesehundred some odd statues that 700 statues that exist in the United States, came into being during the 50s and 60s, during all the civil rights demonstrations. You have to wonder about the timing of this. In other words, why were these statues erected at these particular times in history, harlan . Right. Look, the president was very measured in his response to this. As you laid out, he said that he wanted to leave this to states and cities. Ultimately that is what were going to do. There will not be a edict from the federal government saying you cant remove the statues. Trish he took it a step further. I mean equating robert lee with George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, ron, youre shaking your head, that is when it started to go south. That is crazy, trish. Let me add one thing further, as direct descendant of slaves, in my hometown in virginia, there is statue i pass going home every work every day of civil war soldier. Why is it there . It was there, erected during times of jim crow. I think it was erected as form of intimidation to people of color. It is their way of giving a finger to the people of color, keep in line or else. Trish thats why i dont like it. The north won. We won. Thisi dont think so. Trish the north won. There is no place for that intimidation or glorification of what slavery represented, ron. But the president s not calling for that. He is not calling for gloryification of these. He has been unequivocal trish people are calling for that harlan.
