My suspicion is that our correct is increasingly coming at stake. Previous to this, President Trump has been, lets say, not particularly excited about dubious of military action in syria to remove assad, but events on the ground may be changing his opinion. Trish you say our credibility is at stake, i would think if we dont do anything, right . Thats correct. Trish perhaps as he says things as he said today, hes setting the stage to get americans head around the fact that we may have to do something. We may have to do something very soon . I think thats right. President obama made statements like this and took no action. I think President Trump has a feeling that our credibility is important. People need to know of our resolve. When he says things like he said at the News Conference with king abdullah, my suspicion is you are right. He is consciously or unconsciously preparing us for the possibility of military action to remove assad from power. Trish karl, let me ask you, thoughts on steve bannon and him being stripped of his position there on the National Security council. And the timing of it all in that steve bannon maybe had a reputation for being isolationist and not wanting to get involved in all the worlds problems. Could this be coincided with the fact with what were seeing in syria . Does he need him out of the way or Jared Kushner need him out of the way so they can move forward be and aggressive in the middle east . I thought it was a mistake to put the president s chief political adviser on the National Security council to begin with. The coverage, the news reporting suggests that the reason he was put on the nsc is to serve as a supervisor, as a for, if you will, on mike flynn, the then National Security adviser, and the reason hes removed now is mike flynn isnt the National Security adviser having been replaced by general mcmaster. You have the wrong guy in as National Security adviser to begin with, and you only put the political adviser on the nsc in order to supervise him. Now that hes gone, he doesnt need the political adviser. Trish im wondering if there is Something Else going on here, perhaps its that there are people in that administration, perhaps, i dont know, Jared Kushner may be one of them that feel that we and donald trump himself that we need to be more proactive right now in syria, and if others are reluctant, like steve bannon, again, im taking guesses here, karl. It could be, interesting, a piece by dan balls in the washington post, a top flight reporter whose argument is that the white house when they decided on the National Security adviser, people prepared a list for president elect trump, a potential National Security advisers, and missing from that list was mike flynns name. There was apparently unanimity among all of the people getting ready to advise President Trump on his key white house staff, which you got to think included bannon, that think mike flynn would be disastrous as National Security adviser. Trish how did he wind up there . President trump wanted him there. That all tends to point me in the direction of what the fox news reporting that bannon went on there as a check on mike flynn and now that mike flynn is gone, bannon no longer needed to be in the nsc. Trish let me turn to susan rice. Please do, please do. [ laughter ] this is someone you want to talk about credibility issues, this is someone who suffers in that Department Given with what we saw with benghazi and her narrative she tried to spin about the film being the reason behind the benghazi attack. Now shes trying to spin something, one thing on pbs, she doesnt know what on earth anyone is talking about with nunes, et cetera, and yesterday afternoon she said basically, it was common practice to unmask names, i did that. Whats going on here . Why is she spinning two different tales . Because she got caught. Obviously when she was on television earlier and denied knowledge. I dont know what you are talking about, i had nothing to do with that. When it became evident she had something to do with that, she was clever and parsed her words, i unmasked them not for political purposes. That meant she would unmask them because of intelligent value. American actor who had incidental contact was somehow doing something inappropriate or wrong. I dont think that my sense is that determination would be made by the National Security agency or the cia or the fbi long before this information got to the National Security adviser, and if there had been something inappropriate in the communications, they would have been on it right away. That was disengenuous on her part and said i never leaked anything to anybody. The question is does she know if somebody else leaked it. She parsed words, veracity is in doubt because how she handled benghazi, shes not made a final judgment, keep an open mind whether or not shes going to testify to congress. If she refuses to testify to congress, she ought to be subpoenaed because this is a very important issue. I cannot imagine the grounds on which a National Security adviser could suggest that the unmasking the name of an american in this communications was vital to intelligence reasons when none of the other intelligence agencies found it to be thus.
