I dont think you can say that we dont get it automatically. I think it would be i think you would have riots. I think you would have riots. Well, lets hope not. But thats not stopping a group of conservatives meeting today. Trying to come up with a plan to stop the frontrunner, which lets be honest so far these has worked. So blake burman, lets bring you in, blake. What exactly are the options these conservatives have . Well, ashley, theres about 50 of them. Top conservative minds theyre meeting here youre right in washington today trying to figure out some sort of alternative to donald trump as the Republican Partys potential president ial nominee. That group is being met by the prominent blogger eric mcentarffeeric erickson also told Melissa Francis yesterday on after the bell that the first goal to wrap everyone around ted cruz ore potentially even john kasich. Also in the news today the House Speaker paul ryan he tried to once again bat down any suggestion that he could emerge from a potential brokered convention. Ryan, though, was not as terse when talking about the possibility of that very brokered convention. Take a listen. More likely to become an open convention than we thought before. So were getting our minds around the idea that this concluded very well be a reality and therefore those of us involved in the convention need to respect that. In the meantime the twin Cities Pioneer press, ashley, that is a newspaper in minnesota is reporting in a Conference Call with reporters in that state, marco rubio said ted cruz was quote the only conservative left in the race. Youre a republican strategist. I think severing going on. What a slap in the face to donald trump and large number of people who have gone out and voted for him. Like the establishment completely deaf to what the people are saying on the republican side. What would you say . I would absolutely agree with you. Donald trump is really bringing in new people into the party. Hes running the table. Hes driving up the vote. I will say this. The reality of the situation is either donald trump gets to 1237 delegates outright or we do go to a contested convention, which is a 50 50 proposition. Understand that trump has to win 56 of the remaining delegates and believe it or not, the states lined. Well for him. Starting next tuesday, he could win seven to eight states and all of this discussion could be mute. All right, let me bring you to the other side of this issue. The establishment, the very conservatives just dont believe donald trump could beat Hillary Clinton. However, weve under estimated mr. Trump every step of the way. Would you be nervous in the clinton camp right now . Oh, yeah, i think that the clinton camp and the Democratic Party and all across the country democrats are organizing at the state level, the ground level, preparing for whoever the republican candidate is. Because if donald trump enters the election, its not just that hes malleable. Hes not just unpredictable, hes uncontrollable by the rnc. So we know that the rnc is going to have organization on the ground. So so the democrats right now are pulling opposition research, pulling clips from the 80s. Putting together videos. This is what theyre doing regardless of the fact that theres still a primary taking place. And what i think Bernie Sanders should stay in because he locks down that White Working Class vote. He may have to. Trump is far more electable than most people realize. Uhhuh. He has the iq of einstein and the id of 100 . Let me say this, though. The reason why trump is so tough is we are not talking about gay marriage and abortion. The democrats cant run their usual playbook on hate the poor. He has some great general election positions as micy pointed out on. Hes very tough. Im noting debating whether or not hes tough. Im debating whether those issues matter. Of course they no matter regular election. He says crazy things about women, we saw that ad about verbatim clips. Republicans cant win without women. You have to understand that. No, let me say this. You are talking about tone and rhetoric. Not tone and rhetoric. Yes, you are. Women the economy is the number one issue but women also want to feel repented and that is part of the plan. I mean you have to understand the Republican Party also caters to women. You remember binders full of women . Thats a good point, nomiki. Look, donald trump has not been it was used in ohio very effectively all the comments hes made about women. Thats a huge percentage of the voters out there. Look, i totally agree with you. Trump is going to have to make some changes on tone and rhetoric. But understand simple. We only have have seven battleground states and he increases the math to ten. If we can get 63 of the white vote, he will be the next president of the United States. And believe it or not, it has actually occurred twice. And you have to understand something else. Hes done far better with black voters than mitt romney ever did. You have to understand the 200,000 votes are going to flip this election from blue to red. Youve got to realize how narrow those margins are. Let me get to harry reed today who sat there and blasted i thought it was going to be on the donald trump but blasted the entire party and establishment for being like a frankenstein for being responsible for creating who donald trump is. But theyve been in. Weve had a democratic president now for the last seven years. Uhhuh. And the anger that donald trump is tapping into, its not just at republicans. Its at its washington and congress overall. The fact that harry reed comes out, hes preaching to the choir to those who want to believe him. But not going to have anyone else change their mind. Hes rallying the troops preparing for a full long election most likely behind Hillary Clinton. Hes doing his job right now. Sending the message to the Democratic Party. The troops. Getting them together. Preparing for balloting. Now, we do have to take into consideration that republicans have been winning at the state level. Theyre a machine, which donald trump needs. He needs it whether or not theres a contested brokered convention or not. He needs to be able to. You have governors in every single state who influence the delegates. The delegates dont actually have to respond to the voters. Thats the republican rule. But most likely the delegates are going to respond to the people who are controlling their budgets. Their governors, their senators, their Party Leaders who may not respond to donald trump. So let me bring you in on the brokered contested convention, whatever it turns out to be if that is the case. You know, whispers out there theres going to be a third party. That will be a nail in the coffin for the republicans, would it not . Let me tell you something. In my lifetime the two dumbest ideas i ever heard were new coke and beta maps. The idea of the republican alternative is 100 times worse than that. Okay. Because, again, we go back to the general election of battleground states. If that third Party Nominee were supposedly to get 3 in virginia, florida, and ohio, we would be handing the presidency to Hillary Clinton, and we might as well just basically confirm judge garland right now. I mean why waste the time . Right. And it shouldnt be washington insiders deciding who that Third Party Candidate should be. Yeah. Its a horrible optic on the whole thing that somebody maybe not smoky back room deal, but it feels like it. Those back room deals need to be happening in 50 states across the country if republicans want to hold whatever sort of strategy they have against Hillary Clinton. Last comment. Very quickly. Well, what i was going to say about that is that the idea now were going to have conservatives plotting against trump and acting like the establishment. Heres what i want to say. The establishment has no meaning anymore. But its a word of great significance and this application and donald trump is on the trend. Certainly is. Fascinating stuff. A lot of liberals are saying this too. But the media arent doing their job because they need to stop trump. First of all, its not our job to stop anybody and second of all i would argue that the coverage has been better than a lot of the critics say. Yeah. I would argue that the coverage has been negative against trump in many ways. The unrest weve seen at his rallies, the comments hes made. Yes, hes winning in the votes but iful certainly in other networks its one long tribe of why he is so bad for this country. And yet all the negative Media Attention in my view actually helps donald trump, who is certainly not shy about running against the press. I asked him in an interview last week he said he didnt think it helped him and hurts his feelings when people denounce him. Yes, theres been too much coverage of his rallies and thats been dispr disproportionate to other candidates, and he takes questions from journalists. Cand do that. If only the press would bring up all of this stuff from the past. Theres been a lot of reporting about his business record. Absolutely. Changed positions from some of the liberal stances he took in the 1990s, the fact that hes given money from democrats. It all seems to bounce off him. Not because were not reporting on him. Its because his fans love him. They do. Regardless of maybe isnt spite of what the media says. And i tell you donald trump does not love the media and the press. Take a listen to this. Lies, deceit, viciousness, disgusting reporters, horrible people. Some are nice. Some are nice. Some really disgusting back there are nice. Some really disgusting people back there. I mean love him or hate him, hes very entertaining. You cover the media. Is he i dont want to say but his media up to now has been absolutely spot on brilliant. Is it just kind of better to be lucky than good . Or is he that good . Hes pretty good at it. Speaking on behalf of the disgusting press. And i was a little surprised that trump went there because there was a night that he had won the big victories in florida and other states. The fact that he sometimes seems to go too far, go over the line, talking about violence at rallies. Every single week it seems he dominates the campaign dialogue. Now, that is not the media rolling over for donald trump and creating donald trump. Its a candidate all candidates try to do this to some extent. Its a candidate who knows how to drive media coverage, something he learned as a businessman in the tabloid town of new york city. This is maybe more of a political question than a media question. Fine. But how much is his not being very president ial hurting him . Not up to this point. But if we get to he is the nominee and goes up against Hillary Clinton, which it appears to be in this case. He is not president ial, how much does that really hurt him . I think it could start to hurt him. I actually asked him about this in the interview in palm beach. Hes tried several times to pivot toward a more serious and sober tone. Done it in some of the debates, in some of the interviews, and then somebody will get under his skin and lash out. So the question is donald trump has the discipline now. He knows he has to do this that he cant be all anger all the time. But apart from that, were clearly seeing that the the states of eastern and southeastern europe, they used to be the front line states defending the christian west have the deepest memory. They dont want any muslim immigrants. Now, the chance merkels proposition and eus proposition is still that everybodys got to share them out proportionally through the eu. Even scandinavia doesnt want anymore migrants now. And germany created this problem as you know very well, ashley. German Industry Needs workers and wanted workers. Ashley uhhuh. When chancellor merkel last summer opened the gates. She said just, you know, come on in, folks. Germany really cynically thought it would take off the cream from the top of the migrant flood and then parcel the others throughout the other eu countries and the other countries arent having it. So the eu will probably get smaller. It will become less ambitious and maybe remember that the purpose of the eu wasnt to regulate citizens lives in detail. It wasnt international diplomacy. It wasnt even humanitarianism. It started out and had best remain a terror free zone and a trade zone. Ashley well, as it has first started its life, does Angela Merkel survive this . She may well because theres no alternative. German politics are in disarray we saw with last sundays elections that a very conservative not a facetious, but a heart right party deutsche land for germany, won some stung local victories came in three state parliaments and clearly you and i have discussed this before. Judge, when this nomination first came out, you were here in new york, and we talked about it. And there was a sense that perhaps republicans could cut their nose off despite their face if they dont consider Merrick Garland and end up with a nominee from Hillary Clinton. Whats your thought . Its unclear to me exactly what the president s endgame is here, ashley. Because judge garland is the most conservative nominee to the Supreme Court made by a democratic president since fdr nominated his own attorney general Robert Jackson in 1941. He is certainly a centerrist. Hes clearly within the mainstream. Even center right onissues. Hes very, very pro police. Very, very pro surveillance. His views on guns are a little equivocal. I read the two opinions he wrote on guns this morning. I think its unfair to say as i said earlier hes antigun. Lets just say hes equivocal on guns. But heres what both sides are making. Mitch mig connell by putting up this wall and saying hes a nice guy, great guy, a lot of people like him and another environment he would be confirmed, but were not going to even have a vote on him. Hes gambling that the next president of the United States will be john kasich, ted cruz, or donald trump. Thats a big gamble because if hes wrong and the next president is Hillary Clinton, joe biden, or Bernie Sanders, im throwing joe biden in there because i think its more and more likely with every tick of the clock that the Justice Department will take some action against mrs. Clinton on the email and on the public corruption issue, another debate for another time. If a democrat succeeds president obama, the nominee will not be Merrick Garland. Ashley right . It will be someone much more in the frame of reference of Justice Sonia soda and justice hagen. There are not only liberal academics, they are what the left would call heroes. They are willing to stake a line in the sand and say im going to sit on one side of the line. Judge garland is a centrist who is a compromising consensus building figure. The person will get the nomination if he doesnt make it will not be of that brand. Ashley so having said all of that, judge, do you believe and i know we can only speculate that there is some discussion among those and among the gop leaders saying, look, thats exactly the scenario we could be facing. But on principle, theyre just not going to go ahead to the confirmation process. I think they have an agreement i think. I dont know. Trumps existence with the agreement with him. I dont know if they have it with ted cruz and john kasich. Ashley uhhuh. But whoever the nominee is, assuming its one of those three will back them up on this. So they do have the political but the white house can do a couple things. Theres about six or seven republican members of the senate, ashley, who are running for reelection. Ashley uhhuh. Seriously challenged for reelection. They probably would like this off the table so they dont have to defend their going along with senator mcconnell whos not up for reelection this year in their reelection campaign. But i dont think that the president wants judge garland on the court. Now, i know that sounds counterintuitive but hear me out. I think he wants to beat up Mitch Mcconnell and beat up chuck, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary committee and beat up the republican establishment in the senate so that whoever succeeds him in the white house has a Democratic Senate and then that person can get a far more left oriented justice in there in this seat. And ashley double bluff. Yes. Its a shame that hes chosen such a fine, decent, wonderful judge. I wouldnt be like this. But he is certainly in the mainstream whose career, choose name, whose persona, whose history is going to be picked apart over what would essentially be the president s chicago style political fight. Bernie sanders, democrats have their own establishment problems and inability to not respond to voters needs was when Bernie Sanders is winning 90 of those that is a big problem for democrats.
