Formally announces this weekend, indiana governor mike pence as his running mate. Telling the crowd pence was his first choice. Indiana governor, mike pence, was my first choice. He fights for the people, and he is going to fight for you. Donald trump is a good man, and he will make a great president. Joining me right now is shawn spicer. He is a rnc Communications Director and chief strategist. Welcome to cleveland. This is great. I know. Fox has done an amazing job with the setup. The stage is set. As you mentioned. Were ready and fired up. We are, too. And what i want to get at is what would be success from this convention from your standpoint . I want to ask about mike epence but what do you need to see . Three things. One, people need to get to no know donald trump beyond on tv. You will hear from his friends, family, and Business Associates from 20, 30 years. Understanding the guy behind the tv. Number two is making sure we draw a clear contrast and what is at stake, and number three is i hope more people see the values and principles and say i want to join that arparty. Were going to have an amazing convention and why we stand for freedom and want to allow families and businesses and individuals to prosper and keep their freedom. In terms of that platform you mentioned, is the party united on what that platform looks like . The border wall was in there. The party is adopting trump. Youre seeing the party continuing to eying to unify gr support and that solidifies this week. What does mike pence bring to the ticket . What voters does he bring in . Where is this going in. Mike pence is somebody that social and physical conservatives believe in. You look at the statements put out. Praising mike pence and that is someone donald trump can use to get things done. Donald trump wants to do better, and mike pence knows how Government Works and he has a proven track record of success. There is a huge combination of outside and inside success, and thats going to be just a huge tremendous asset as he roll towards november. What are the differences in terms of trade and immigration . Have they ironed that out . They are not only on the same page, but if you want everybody to be simpatico, thats not going to happen. If you say, this needs to be tweaked, he knows washington and policy and government, and he is able to give donald trump real advice and navigate things to get it codone. Trump ran an empire, and mike pence is from a small, rural town in the midwest. Totally different mentalities. Both of their grandparents grew up in different ways and they share a value and love for this country that is amazing. What are you looking forward to most . Is it thursday night . Is it Donald Trumps acceptance speech . Thursday night. Thats the big night. When you look at what it present, it will be a different convention. Theres going to be celebrity, professional athletes and a lot of people from the trump family. This is a starstudded events and like the debates and turnouts, its going to break records. Were continuing to hear how Hillary Clinton has this money, and donald trump has had some trouble. I think we couldnt be more pleased in how fundraising is going. We prereleasreleased, and it w 5 million. That was for the victory and the trump campaign. We couldnt be more happy with that. People thought we wouldnt be able to ramp up. We started this in may, and terms of online for the campaign, we started it two weeks into june. We have never seen a republican candidate that has this type of response online and with small donors. Over 400,000 small donors we had in two weeks. And for may, that was significant obviously. Trump raising 5. 6 million in the month of may, but were looking at clinton at 26. 4 million. Tell us what mike pence does to the fundraising ticket. Have you seen a change in terms of donors . Have you seen any difference in terms of donors going into this june report . Let me just comment on may because may really is irrelevant. We were not fundraising until the last week of may for trump victory, and really didnt start th the online effort until june. Despite. Fact we had lower numbers, if you look at them on an absolute basis, people were blown away, and were not going to need to spend nearly as much money as she is. Pence, i couldnt be happier. He is an incredible aridiculous and he wants a partner this this. This is a person who has had experience, and he has tremendous respect out of washington. He is going to be another terrific addition for us. So what does he do . I was reading a story that given the rules, that there are some donors who may want to give more, but cant because they are already dealing with him in terms of the pension fund of indiana. Does mike pence change the dynamics in anyway in terms of fundraising this. I think its only positive. There are certain issues, and its a small number of people that will be impacted by that, and we make sure there arent conflicts and this is a campaign that there will be no pay to play, and no buying influence. This is all about people who want to support this. We have had tremendous input from people who havent been traditional republican donors in the past, and support from the traditional republican donors and people are on the sidelines with pence on the ticket will be thrilled and pat of this. What happens after the convention . Once the convention is over on friday morning, when we have heard the acceptance speech and all of the speakers, does that ramp up the fundraising . Is that where the big work takes place . Tell us about the conventions impact. First of all, i think this convention is going to be the most exciting thing people have seen. This will be the super bowl of conventions. And i think that, you know, people know donald trump, but people are going to see this ticket and will be thrilled coming out of this convention and understanding the issues. We have a twotiered approach. Its with the rnc, and donald trump has said, its to focus on fundraising with the rnc to help not only him, but the rest of the party. They are focused on running a ground campaign, and they have done a tremendous job building the ground organization. This will be a focus, and there will be a significant online focus to help the campaign for small donors who want to help. Its not just the money, but the incredible support we are getting across the country. A lot of Bernie Sanders supporters and others. I want to talk about the veterans and troops and how they serve us by keeping us safe and we need to serve them better by making sure they have the money and resources necessary and to stop wars from happening in the first place. Why dont we have that in place already . Its been such a sad and amazing situation where our veterans are and the treatment they get when they come home. The pace of reform at the va has been slow. We created pilot programs to give our veterans more choices in their communities as well to add to the senior managements, and if you look at the military side, our military has faced over a trillion dollars of cuts as the the president has viewed the military as Just Another Program and not the chief responsibility of the federal government. Thats interesting. Whether you have the world on fire. What just happened in nice or now turkey, and give us your status check in terms of where we are on that front and what needs to be done . The world has grown more dangerous and thats in part because president obama and secretary clinton as his secretary of state has largely receded from the world and they have not succeeded to try to preserve International Stability and order. Not because we are humanitarian, and we do it because it is in our interest with global interests around the world, and the fight against the islamic state, we have some gains in iraq, but not at all in syria nor in libya, which secretary clinton helped persuade barack obama go over there in first place. We have to stop things happening in places like nice. What do you think was behind the coup attempt in turkey . People say that it was staged himself, and there could have been, you know, evidefforts to the u. S. From air strikes against isis in the interim which we had to stop. Its a little too early to know all the details. Its not a good thing when a nato ally, the second largest country has a coup. They have been somewhat repressive of the courts and the process. In the middle of the coup, the opposition parties opposed it, but i think its important in the aftermath now that turkey return to its tradition of western democracy that respects individual rights and the results of the elections. Not that this attempted coup will used for excuse of further political crackdown. Right. Do you expect trump will increase or move to increase military spending . I absolutely believe that trump and congress will increase our military budget. I have had this conversation with donald and he understands we have faced dramatic cuts and we need to serve our troops so they can serve us. Great to see you. Its, you know, look. You look on the democrat side and they are fighting and they havent got an nominee of Vice President yet. If you look in the last few days, you saw more unification. Some people said they would go to cleveland and turn everything upside down and try to come up with a different nominee, and you see people come together and he gets ready to go with a ticket that will help us unify and i think everybody is recognizing what is at stake. You look at Ruth Bader Ginsbergs statement. There was a 54 position that almost took away our Second Amendment rights. You cant have the Supreme Court go against that and all of that is at stake. We have to unify because its either donald trump or Hillary Clinton. We need donald trump to win this election to get our country moving again. Lets talk about Hillary Clintonor momtecse t us is trying to get those agencies to investigate Hillary Clinton. What are you trying to do . You did not sign that letter that some of your colleagues have sent to these agencies, but what are you hoping to achieve in terms of Hillary Clinton and its investigations around her dealings . What we have been trying to do is get the truth out there and i think tray gowdy and a select committee on benghazi have done an incredible job. People know that not only Hillary Clinton wasnt focused, not one asset turned towards saving those four americans whose lives were lost, but she lied to congress and the American People. And they laid out the case that she broke the law. She is celebrating the fact she got away with it because her name is Hillary Clinton. Everybody else in america would be indicted and facing jail time. It shows the American People how rigged this system is for elites like Hillary Clinton that the rules dont apply to her that a apply to everybody else. They want this investigation around the foundation because it was given money from parties that she was dealing with as secretary of state. You look at the iranian deal and the russians. Do you think we will see new investigations around the clinton foundation. You will see more investigations around the foundation, but also her testimony to congress. She was under oath when she testified and her statements are contradictory. Perjury is being looked at and the fbi director said he hadnt looked into that yet and when he was confronted by the facts it was contradicted by the facts that were determined by the fbi, theres more serious questions. Again, she shouldnt be celebrating. She has more questions to answer to the American People. Its why a lot of people dont trust her to this day. They dont mesh out to the facts that are out there. They have released the estranged w wife of the attacker. 85 people are hospitalized, 18 of them in lifethreatening conditio condition. Lets bring in peter king. He is the sub chairman on the committee of counterterrorism. Thank you, maria. You were talking about to this point, whether it be nice, turkey now, it feels like things have gotten more dangerous. What has the response been from america . I believe the president s response has been inadequate when it comes to islamist terrorism and going back to orlando and he feels somehow not willing to identify this as an islamist attack and was merged in with guns and an attack on a gay club. Bottom line was it was an attack by an isis supporter, someone who was radicalized by isis and the president always tries to somehow defuse it to spread it out and as far as france, again, this was an islamist attack and the president again, the next day showed more intensity i thought defending Muslim Americans than he was outraged about what happened in nice. One step forward and one step to the side and this is his reluctance to go all out and identify isis and islamist terrorism as being the evil in the world today. You are saying right now we know that isis is, in fact, behind the nice attack. Well, he was at least inspire b ed by isis. Thats not something that just happens. People are radicalized and these are carried out and they may not be a radar screen. People have radical tendencies, but nevertheless, they should be watched and surveilled and the fbi should hand it off to the local police. Tell us how donald trump would be different than what we are seeing right now. A lot has been said about how he is an outsider and not a politico and he doesnt know his way around washington. How will he be able to bring the goods to know what to do in National Security and fighting terrorism . What do you expect . The most positive aspect is he has the right instincts. He know islamist terrorism is the enemy and we have to go all out. You never tell the enemy what you are not going to do. We need more air power and we have to use ground troops. You dont tell the enemy. And he realizes that. You dont tip the enemy off as to what you are going to do. At home, we have to have increase surveillance and and we are not talking about violating the law or constitution, but stepped up Police Activity at the National State and federal level. That has to be done. As far as advice, its very important that mike pence is going to be the Vice President. He is on the Foreign Affairs committee and he believes in Strong Defense and foreign policy. He was solid on the issue of Homeland Security. Right there in the oval office with him will be mike pence who knows his away around washington, and not only is he knowledgeable, but he knows which buttons to push on capital hill, and close with paul ryan, the speaker. He has been able to negotiate with both republicans and departments. You like the pence pick. You think that will increase the strength on the military side. Compare that to what were seeing out of clinton campaign. What would Hillary Clinton do in the face of terrorism . You know, we dont know. The reason i say that is because she sends mixed messages. Now, she would be an apologist. In the nice bombing, she said we shouldnt get into a ground war. No one is calling for that, but its leading with a defeatists tone. Telling the enemy what were not going to do. Saying we dont want to get engaged if we dont have to. She has been all over the place on syria and as far as dealing with isis. She has given in too much to the Bernie SandersElizabeth Warren wing of the democratic party. Again, she has become so beholden to the left. I thought for a while that she was a voice for stronger policy. But as the campaign went on, she got further and further to the left and got coopted by the sanders people. Jamie, we heard from Steve Scalise and peter king. Hes not a swing state, indiana, but he brings that midwest flavor. You kind of feel in his gut he wanted Chris Christie or newt gingrich. You might see with this pick hes going to have pence unify the base, as caitlin said. Maybe he can move himself to the center on certain issues he moved right on during the primary. Pence might be that pick where he can point to and say, conservatives, trust me, even as he might move to the center for the general election. The good thing about him is hes grownup, you can send him out on his own airplane, travel the country, he wont generate his own controversy. This campaign will be about donald trump and Hillary Clinton. People dont vote for a Vice President ial pick. Sometimes they vote against it. Here it can be helpful. My sense is you have a Big Senate Race in indiana, a new governor candidate. It could be a competitive state. Indiana has played a particularly Important Role for donald trump, its kind of where he started to clinch the nomination, its an important state for him, so he has some connections there. Interestingly, though, he doespence. Theyre still trying to get to know each other, build up that chemistry. It will be interesting to watch as they campaign together. Pence didnt endorse trump in the primary. Thats true. Let me show you this new poll we have out this morning and it shows still hillary in the lead at 47 , but donald trump has been able to narrow the gap, up to 43 . First of all, you shouldnt pay a whole lot of attention to summer polls. That poll was a dramatic poll the last time, she had a dramatic lead. My sense is this is going to be a very close race, going to be come down to two or three points, and thats the way it will be the rest of the way. Wow. I agree. I do think the polls after the convention will be interesting to watch. Its been kind of a roller coaster in battleground states. He is proving to be competitive. I do think were starting to see the effects of the fbi investigation, the effects of recent events playing a role in these tickets. Do you think the comey testimony, because he was so straightforward about carelessness, et cetera, you think it did hurt her, even though he didnt recommend charges . I think so, the National Polls taken since that was announced, you saw it tightening, and tightening in the battleground states which is where the election plays out. If she believes she needs to bring in bernie supporters, she brings in someone like Elizabeth Warren. Maybe she goes with someone more steady that appeals to moderates like tim kaine or even tom vilsack, secretary of agriculture. Warren has been very vocal. She would be very good in a campaign, she would excite their base. She would be difficult to govern with. She has the potential to overshadow her. Elizabeth warren will play a role in this campaign whether or not shes on the ticket. I think they might rather have her out campaigning for various candidates, maybe not on the ticket. What would be the effect of Elizabeth Warren on wall street money for the super pac and places like that . Wall street may not be as generous to Hillary Clintons campaign if Elizabeth Warren is on the ticket. She keeps talking about Holding Banks to account.
