Economy . After so many months of bumping along the bottom, will 2015 be the happy new year well be cheering for when we count down to midnight on december 31st. Thats the big question we have today as we look ahead on sunday morning futures. Already one potential candidate, jeb bush has announced hes actively exploring a run for the white house. Others like Elizabeth Warren have backers pushing them towards the field. The 2016 president ial race is starting to take shape and it is not even 2015 yet. John kasich served in congress for 18 years. He is now the governor from the buckeye state, ohio. Governor, good to have you on the program. Thanks so much for joining us. Glad to be with you. So many people talk about you as perhaps a candidate. Will you throw your name in the ring . Maria im focused on the budget here in ohio. Thats all im thinking about now. Weve got some good Economic News last week. We are up about 285,000 jobs in the last four years, which is really great. Our unemployment has dropped to 5 and we have to keep it going here in ohio because people think about ohio as the rust belt. I dont really like that term. We really are the new ohio now where we still love the Old Industries that we knew so well in ohio for the last 40 50 years, but now we are really focusing in addition to that on the new kind of industries that youre familiar with whether its Cloud Computing, Data Analytics, whether its advanced programs and health care or even energy. Thats what were focusing on here in ohio. So you know, in life you take your eye off the ball and you lose the ball game and im not interested in doing that here. Ive got a job to do at least in the very near term. Good for you, governor. You already have been quite successful. I want to ask you about that. Incomes are up in ohio. Exports set to have a record. Job retention up. New businesses being created. A lot of good things to talk about and yet we see people in the country even though the Economic Data is looking better on a National Level people are not feeling it. So i want to ask you about that as well as your priorities working with the president in the new congress. A lot to talk about with you this morning governor. Stay with us because first we want to take a look at both sides of the 2016 president ial field. Eric chandra joins us with that angle. Good morning, maria, fls one year, 10 months 11 days or 16,344 minutes. You can bet for each and everyone of them someone will be thinking about sitting behind that big desk in the oval office. Im back well she may be back, but you know hillary, never really went away. The Presumptive Democratic frontrunner remains far ahead. Even though her numbers have declined by 7 points in spring. The latest fox news poll shows mrs. Clinton not just 62 , the partys left wing favorite massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren who insists she will not run is at 12 . Vice President Joe Biden is at 10 . This is a really serious life changing decision and im going to take my time. I realize at some point end of this year early next year ill make a decision to really pursue this or to stand down. And then theres former Florida Governor jeb bush. Hes thrown the republican field into a tizzy with news that he may run. It appears that mr. Bush and mitt romney will have to duke it out at the top. Mr. Romney has 19 support, jeb bush 10 with Chris ChristieMike Huckabee at 8 . Rand paul 8 , scott walker 7 , ted cruz 5 . Most of the speculation is whether jeb bush will follow his father and uncle for a bid. Immigration and the common core curriculum. Bush strikes at Hillary Clinton, the close els of any of his republican rivals. If the election is now, she would win 4942 . You know at this stage any predictions are still a parlor game. Remember at this time leading up to the 2008 president ial race it seemed like a slam dunk for hillary. In december of 2006 she had almost three times more support than a freshman senator by the name of barack obama leading him 3312 which is the same amount warren now has. We all know how that one turned out. We sure do. Eric with the ratest therelatest there. Im with Governor John Kasich here. No republican governor has ever been elected to the presidency without winning ohio. What is it about ohio that is so important, do you think, in these races . I think, maria, were a snapshot of the country. I mean we have urban, suburban, rural. We are a very diversified state and the ability to communicate across the country can be reflected in a thumbnail in the state of ohio which makes ohio a very exciting place. I think it will hold true that republicans want to win the white house. Theyre going to have to come to ohio and theyre going to have to win. When you look at how the economy in ohio is changing, whats behind that. Cloud computing engineering, health care and technology really getting together. Because were focused on it, maria. Heres what we know, ohio nor a long time relied on the old line industries. We love that. Make new friends but keep the old. We love the Old Industries, but they are now getting into advanced manufacturing, bringing technology but we also know to create excitement in our state things like Cloud Computing and Data Analytics and advanced energy and the kinds of things that can flow from energy or from data centers thats the thing that gets young people excited. Thats the things that will draw people to our state. But, maria, we have a big challenge. Were working on work force. Were improving our education system, but we have to continue to promote entrepreneurship and new businesses, new startups and we have focused on helping Small Businesses to be more successful so you have to take a whole range of things in order to be successful. By the way beginning of the show you said people were pessimistic. They are pessimistic about the state of america but they have been you know very positive, over 60 of ohioans thinking were headed in the right direction. The key now, maria, is to have team work here in the state. If everybody ghets and keeps their own marbles and goes and hides in the corner we wont have the tax reform we need, we wont have the reform of social services we need so my job is to try to convince people that, you know, there is a better way to do things and were better when were unified than when were fighting. We have to think about what do we want to be remembered for. If we can put that into the quotient out here well continue to grow and transform ourselves into one of the great states in america and one of the great places that people can see around the world. Youve had job creation as a top priority and its been working. Let me ask you you would like this maria. Youre such a Smart Business person. Weve privatized or Economic Development operation. Weve created jobs for ohio. Theyve hired people that can speak about the sectors that we want to promote. So, for example, in Financial Services we have a Financial Service expert. You cant go to jamie dimon and ask him to give you a tutorial on the difference of a stock and a bond and recruit his business. We have people that can actually speak to the job creators and we move quickly and we are focused on the things we think will allow the state to rise economically. Its the most unique Economic Development program in the country, by the way. Understood. You bring a business background to the Governors Office which is amazing and really allow people to see really how you can put that to work in terms of luring businesses to the state. Let me ask you real quick, governor, before you go. What kind of priorities would you like to see the congress tackle when the new Congress Comes into office . You know, a lot of different debate on whether the president will veto what the congress will put on the table. Thats okay. Youve got to put your ideas out there. Youll find some where hell agree. Maria, im not pushing a balanced Budget Amendment to the federal constitution. We have to do this. Some republicans are iffy. Youve got to be kidding me. Were 18 trillion in the whole. The single Biggest Issue outside of values, personal responsibility, team work, believing in a higher power the most important thing we can do to the congress is to lock them in so they have to make choices and balance a budget and then at the same time of course tax reform that would encourage people to invest in america and not to take their money some other place in the world. So, you know theyve got to do their job down there present the ideas. Thats what politics is about. Its a battle of ideas and get them out there. Hopefully tax reform will be high on the priority list. Governor. Good to have you on the program. Thanks so much. Maria, you are yo the best. Thanks so much. You rock. Congratulations. Well the official end of u. S. Combat operations in afghanistan is this wednesday, new years eve. Well be leaving just a little more than 10,000 advisors diplomats and training units behind. Ban kimoon is calling for 2015 to be a year of Global Action against terrorism. Retired Army Lieutenant general Daniel Bolger is the author of why we lost, a generals inside account of the iraq and afghanistan wars. General, good to have you on the program. Thanks so much for joining us. Thank you maria. Can you characterize the state of affairs . Today theyre complete in their combat mission. Most of the combat from last year has been done by the afghans. Our forces have suffered a lot less losses lately, the poor afghans have lost over 4500 soldiers and Police Killed this year which is the highest number of the war. Theres a heck of a lot of fighting going on in afghanistan in the south and the east. The taliban is in control. Theyre not interested in negotiating, theyre interested in winning. What about the strategy and drawing down that strategy now. Is now the right time and do you worry that we are still leaving men and women behind and perhaps with not enough support perhaps leaving them in harms way . Maria im absolutely concerned about that and i think every american should be. Leaving 10,000 americans in a land locked country where your lines of comply go through pakistan and russia neither of which is our friends, is very very dangerous. Right now the enemy is not active because the weather is very cold, the mountains are covered in snow and ice but that will break come the spring. Come the spring there will be a taliban offensive. At that point well find out if the Afghan Forces weve been training for 13 years can hold and i will tell you, its he going to be a very very tough situation and those americans are going to be at great risk. It feels like things have gotten worse in terms of terrorism and the bad actors out there. Is that a fair statement . Well, terrorists fill vacuums and when the United States pulls back as we tried to do in iraq although weve had to send forces back in as weve publicly stated were going to go 10,000 this year, 5,000 next year and down to the embassy after that. Terrorists see that as weakness and they advance. In that regard theyre taking advantage of what they see as a power vacuum. So we drastically increase the number of troops on the ground and as a result u. S. Soldiers, american deaths, those numbers have gone up attacks on u. S. Soldiers. Well, if we thats thats the challenge. When we go into these countries maria, if we take the lead and fight, weve got the best military in the world. They will fight and take the fight to the enemy, but the problem is thats a shortterm solution because were not willing to stay there for 10, 20, 30 years. These local folks like isis, the taliban, they will wait us out and when we draw down, they move in. What are your observations about isis in iraq right now . I mean there i guess is one piece of evidence that it feels like its gotten worse. I think its something we all need to be concerned about. Weve moved in and took over all the areas that we had cleared in 2003 to 2011. That eight year fight there. All those sunni arab districts like mosul and the Anbar Province have all been taken over by isis effective control. They are also lying low for the winter. The winter in iraq is not as bad as afghanistan but its very rainy and cold. Youll see a spring offensive from them as well. We will see if our advisors and our air power has been able to do something to stop that. General, can you look ahead for us into 2015 . What are you expecting in terms of afghanterghanistan and iraq . There will be more fighting. Were supporting a shia dominated government. Well see if we can get any sunni people back in. In afghanistan it is a grim future. That landlocked country, the countries around it particularly pakistan harbor a lot of Border Crossers who are going to come in with the spring and there will be a taliban offensive. That one were going to have to watch very closely. The United States may have to put in more air support or special ops to deal with what will surely be a strong taliban offensive this spring. Not something that you want to see. General, good to have you on the program. Thanks very much for your insights today. Thank you. General bolger joining us. Workers wages, however, have gone virtually nowhere, but when the ball drops in times square at 12 00 a. M. On thursday can we pop the champaign corks with the feeling that better days are in fact ahead. We have a professor of economics from harvard university. Ken, good to have you on the program. Welcome. Seasons greetings to you, maria. And to you. So what would you expect for 2015. Things seem to be Getting Better from your standpoint . They do. We have very solid broad based growth particularly in the United States, and i think we might even see more upward movement in wages at last. So what are you looking for in terms of the catalysts to actually move wages . Thats been the one area that keep people feeling just not great about their own situations. Well, i think weve had a situation where wages wanted to go down during the recession but theres sort of a floor on them and i think now the actual wages firms want to pay really caught up and are moving ahead. Firms are hiring and is increasing and eventually firms will be competing with each other. Wages are going to be going up. Not for everybody at the same time, of course, but i think its going to be more broad based in 2015. You know, still slow going but i think the directions clear. How do you think the Federal Reserve sees this ken . Of course the fed ended up quantitative easing Stimulus Program at the end of this year november, and then weve got expectations that Interest Rates will start to move higher in the new year. What do you think . I think the fed is very optimistic about how the economy is going. They see very broadbased recovery. Theyre like a little worried about housing not being as strong as other sectors, about the fact that this isnt a normal recovery so you never quite know but at the same time most of the signs look good. But at the same time i think theyre going to be very very cautious. Theyre going to wait until the economy overheats a bit because lets face it the big mistake they can make is going too soon hiking too fast taking the six, sevenyear recession and making it longer. So i think theyre going to be very cautious. Yes, i do think well see hype in 2015 but probably not towards the end of the year although there will be a lot of chatter about it much sooner. We were just talking about john kasich governor of ohio who is trying to transition that economy to more of a Technology BaseEngineering BaseCloud Computing base economy and while keeping the growth in terms of the so called rust belt. Do you think thats where the growth in the economy comes from in 2015 . Where is the growth . I think its were going certainly to see it in the tax sector, biomed. But i think well see it even in the roughust industries as you described them. I mean ohio is in a tough spot. Its not done as well as in other states. I grew up in upstate new york, rochester, new york. It used to be one of the wealthiest cities in the u. S. And its hollowed out. Its coming back. There are Tech Industries other things. I imagine ohio will see the same. But its not easy in those states certainly which have not had the concentrated areas of dynamism. Other people are wondering if the International Weakness we are seeing is going to impact the u. S. We know the european economy has weakened. Well see the European Central bank move to stimulate it. China is slowing down. How important are these things to u. S. Earnings and the American Economy . So theyre particularly important to earnings and they may affect the stock market. I think the real economy will grow the stock market i cant predict as well. We do have Oil Prices Plummet plummeting, which is not good for russia venezuela, saudi arabia, but for the world as a whole, particularly europe and japan, this is a big shot in the arm, its a big boost in 2015. I think its something thats going to help a lot. Youre right, china is slowing down and thats probably the biggest wild card in the global economy. Thats really been driving everything else. Its part of why oil prices are slowing down. So if china were to slow down more radically then i think wed worry. Also theres geopolitical issues from aisleoil prices falling. Russia could be in a financial crisis. We hope that doesnt have broader ramifications. All right. Well leave it there and well be watching. Ken, good to have you on the show today. Thanks so much. Thank you. Happy new year to you ken rolloff. See how they run, so many 2016 contenders. They havent officially thrown their hat in the ring yet but it sure seems like it doesnt it . We still have almost four days left in 2014, but the contenders are already lining up on both sides of the aisle. In the race for the white house for 2016. We want to bring in our panel, ed rollins, former Principal White House advisor to president reagan. Hes a long time strategist and he is a fox news political analyst. Doug hi is chief deputy chief of staff. He was the Communications Director of the rnc. Jerry baker is the wall street journals managing editor. Thank you for joining us. How do you think the Playing Field changes, ed . What will it look like for 2015 . Youve got more candidates than ive ever seen. Youve got 20 people looking at it may be down to 12. Three wings of the party are all going after each other. They won the senate races across the country the tea party is alive and well. You have the evangelical where someone like Mike Huckabee will be a factor. It feels like deja vu to me back in 2004 when the republicans were at each others throats and it didnt do the party any good. Is it too many people . It didnt do republicans any good either when we had debate after debate when they were going a of each other. When you saw Hillary Clinton and barack obama going after each other. They were strengthened by that. If we can step back, winnow the field down and get better candidates, i think well be able to see some progression forward from last time. You think theyll be able to do that . We hope. Jerry obviously this last Midterm Election was all about the economy. Do you think thats going to be the case again . What are people voting on . Well see. The economy is strengthening. Its not done as well as it has historically. It is Getting Better. Well see how that unfolds in 2015 whether that continues or what it is. The question for the republican field and the general election for 2015 is how much of a big deal is the economy and how much is the election on Foreign Policy and the leadership in the world. This has been a year 2014, where weve seen the huge challenges to the United States leadership. The United States has been found wanting with regard to russia, the middle east, increasingly with china as well, north korea just with this latest incident. The u. S. Doesnt look very strong. If thats repeated in 2015 i would expect Foreign PolicyNational Security especially on the republican side and someone and the debate about who can best lead america this country which seems to be lacking leadership at the moment i would expect that would be the bigger issue. I think obama will be perceived as such a weak leader by the time he leaves whoever can be a strong Decision Maker will is an advantage. The president did our candidates some favors with cuba politically. What we saw with the tactics that rand paul demonstrated, he didnt come out looking strong. Rand paul was linked to Barack Obamas policy. Thats a great point. Hes already changed the dynamic of the republican race. Six months ago, rand paul who is going to be running and is a strong candidate and running very much on a policy of less intervention by the United States he was six months ago bolstered by the opinion polls which said americans supported him. They wanted less intervention by the u. S. Since the events of the last six months in the middle east in particular, thats changed and hes changed his tune a lot, too. So even he is starting to say things like we need more American Leadership in the world. I think that has changed the dynamic. Thats a great point. Foreign policy is good for voters. Again, because of direct strength. I think one of the things youre going to see is with john mccain who will be the chair of the Armed Services committee in the senate. Hes been a talking head on television, u. S. Senator and house member, but he really is a significant player. Our defense policy is going to take the president on full bore. The candidates have to get in line. Do you think the candidates dont want to see bush clinton. They want fresh blood . What do you think . If it was bill clinton jr. As opposed to hillary this is different. Shes accepted a little easier. I think in the Republican Party well have a real knockdown dragout. It will be people who dont want to hand the baton off to another bush. He has to fight to it. The over arching question theyll have to answer is am i the run who can beat Hillary Clinton. Jeb bush, his last name is well known, first name jeb isnt well known, hes a longtime governor, his wife is hispanic, he speaks spanish. He can run as an experienced hand and fresh new face. If he can push that argument forward, that hes the one that can beat hillary, thats the way to go. Great points. Gentlemen, stay with us. Get a look at whats coming up on media buzz. Good morning to you howie. Hi, maria. Well look at the media blame game. The unfortunate finger pointing and take an in depth look at the mistakes and excesses and superficiality and biases andersen sayings allism of the media from ebola to the missing malaysian plane that became such an obsession. Youre going to have a long list there howie. I need two hours. Well see you in 20 minutes, howie. Thank you. At his final press conference of the year the president warned he will continue to go at it alone. With republicans taking the lead this year, whats the likelihood of that happening . Well talk with our panel about that as we continue to look ahead on sunday morning futures. Names louis, and i quit smoking with chantix. I had tried to do it in the past. I hadnt been successful. Quitting smoking this time was different because i got a prescription for chantix. Along with support Chantix Varenicline is proven to help people quit smoking. The fact that it reduced the urge to smoke helped me get that confidence that i could do it. Some people had changes in behavior, thinking or mood hostility, agitation, depressed mood and suicidal thoughts or actions while taking or after stopping chantix. Some people had seizures while taking chantix. If you notice any of these stop chantix and call your doctor right away. Tell your doctor about any history of Mental Health problems, which could get worse while taking chantix or history of seizures. Don take chantix if youve had a serious allergic or skin reaction to it. If you develop these stop chantix and see your doctor right away as some can be lifethreatening. Tell your doctor if you have a history of heart or blood vessel problems, or develop new or worse symptoms. Get medical help right away if you have symptoms of a heart attack or stroke. Decrease alcohol use while taking chantix. Use caution when driving or operating machinery. Common side effects include nausea trouble sleeping and unusual dreams. I love myself as a nonsmoker. Ask your doctor if chantix is right for you. And im back with our panel ed rollins doug high and jerry baker joining me. The president has gone it alone on a number of instances this year legislation whether it be cuba. Whats to say hes not going to continue doing that . New congress or not. I think he will, but i think hes going to find a very unified Republican Party. He got a little misled by the lame duck session. He thought it was business as usual. Dramatic difference. Youll have very strong chair men of these committees both in the house Andersen Nate. Youll see unity. If he wants to veto it, he can. At the end of the day the republicans will come to what they want. Is that the secret weapon, unity . Absolutely. The fights between the inside will be minimal. At the end of the day in the house you have enough votes that you can let a few distances go south. In the senate it will be a strong, unified i think eds right. On the big issues the president is true sings the election two months ago its been a pretty remarkable run. The president has come out swinging on all fronts taking the lead. Once we get the new congress in place, what ed talks about there, united republican leadership, youll see the republicans taking the lead on immigration. They will come up with a plan themselves on that. On energy, some of the most important issues, fracking, Keystone Pipeline and i believe and i certainly hope on tax reform too. They will take the lead and will take it on policies that will be hard politically for the president to veto. He probably will. I think theres a new mood in the Republican Party and theyll come up with what will be popular and for the country to come ahead and they will pass by significant margins and they will challenge the president to send them away. And two deals i think the president will go with. I think hes going to go with an iran deal that will be very unpopular and not in the best interests of the country and closing gitmo. Letting the prisoners go will be unpopular. Youre right. In terms of vetoing it this is something, what do you do . If the xl pipeline, for example that seems to me like one of the real low hanging fruits here. What if the president vetoes, what account republicans do . They can Campaign Around the country against the presss actions. I think keystone will be the first thing to come up. The smaller things they passed seven Appropriations Bills last year, the Senate Passed zero. The house passed a budget and the senate wouldnt pass anything. If the house Andersen Nate passes Appropriations Bills and some get vetoed, we can do the daytoday governing that hasnt happened in the past four years. The congress has to tell the people they will govern. I think its extraordinary what you said jerry that is that he came out swinging. Its almost as if he doesnt believe just what happened. The American People voted in the mid term elections and yet he came out and did all of these things in a go it alone way. I still come back to the lame duck assumption. I think it gave him a false assumption that things were business as usual. Nancy pelosi doing his bidding is all gone come january. Agree, xl tax reform . I think some kind of economic stimulus is something thats very, very critical to us. My sense is a National Security issue here thats very, very serious. What about obama care and the medical device tax. Republicans wanted to do something about it and its not able to get it through the democratic senate. Interesting. Obama care though does not get repealed . No. He wont sign it. Right. This is his this is his signature legislation. What else in terms of the Energy Business . I mean were talking so much all the time about this Energy Revolution in america. I mean are there other things come out of that story that will on economic growth. Theyre exports which the congress could look at. Theres a lot of support for it for the u. S. To lift its export ban on oil. In fact, theyve been starting very steadily to be more exports there. Thats important because the u. S. Now is as we know, rapidly becoming and despite the prices weve seen in the last few months, it will be one of the lowest Oil Producers in the world. But in addition to being able to supply the u. S. Market, theyre able to export overseas, too. Oil prices havent come down as much as they have, will that cut into what has been one of the big generators of growth in 2014 for the u. S. Economy that is the Energy Business . Weve already seen well permits down. As long as the prices are dropping, you wont see any new exploration. Our two or three year goal is going to be put in jeopardy. And the benefits outweigh it. The benefits to u. S. Consumers of gasoline prices being much lower, of Energy Prices being much lower is huge. Its part of helping the u. S. Economy. Theres no question about that. If youre a family driving 20 or 40 miles per day not only to get to work but to drive kids to soccer, this is a part thats finally coming back. Stay with us. As we bring in the new year the economy needs a jump start. What is needed to jump start that . Stay with us as sunday morning futures comes right back. Welcome back. We are talking about the road ahead with our panel, ed rollins, doug high jerry baker. Ed, you were mentioning about how expensive it has become to run and all of these candidates are thinking about that right now. The three frontrunners the South Carolina iowa and New Hampshire probably costs 75 to 100 million to win and be viable. Most of the candidates need to win two or three to go on unless youre bush or romney. After that, you need to do 2 or 300 fundraisers. The others go to independent expenditures. I think its going to cost 150 to 200 million or more to basically win the primaries. Wow. 200 million. Is the timing moved up because jeb bush came out sooner rather than later . Yeah. Jeb bush started everybodys clock faster. Because theyre competing against the same donors that he means all of them have to move forward. In hasnt hillary announced yet . No, shes going to run. Why should she . Why immediately why limit what you can do. Once youre semi officially a president ial candidate, you limit what you can do. Shes giving a lot of speeches and making money and you become much more of a target than you were going to be in there anyway. Theres no pressure for her to get into the race. She can wait a while. I agree with ed i think jebs move has pushed up the whole race. Well see in the First Quarter of 2015 most people will be coming out declaring themselves. A lot of people have talked about Elizabeth Warren being a big threat to Hillary Clinton. The fact that barack obama is in the fourth quarter. Hes going to go a it alone and cost Hillary Clinton quite a bit. Shell have to defend instead of be proactive. Is the president supporting Hillary Clinton . No. Warren . If he had said no, i dont want you to participate they would not have participated. It was a hard swallow for him and put forth the best speech of his convention. We also saw Elizabeth Warren and nancy pelosi united against barack obama and steny hoyer. That is one of the ironies, everybody thinks that, you know Elizabeth Warren might be the president s candidate, but actually she right now is presenting herself as the strongest critic. In the economy more generally, even on some of the policy things. We focused so much over the past couple of years about republican divisions. I lived through barely survived. We havent focused on what democrats are divided upon. We certainly see with the president having a lack of solid relationships to democrats theyre not happy about him going it alone either. She will be their ted cruz. I agree with that. What about benghazi . Is this going to matter for hillary . Its something she has to really answer in front of the American People. Foreign policy in general. Jared brought up Foreign Policy earlier. A lot of the decisions that have been made have been criticized. I dont think its a hard one. Where she is and were talking about a Strong National defense have a strong Foreign Policy. Where will she be in the whole debate. Thats the area where shes going to have to distance herself from the president probably more than anything else. Shes going to its very tricky. Having served as secretary of state, she will very to to say shes already started to say it. Otherwise not very interesting book that she did disagree with the president s she agreed she complied with the president. Since she left office she would have taken a tougher line in other areas. She will have to do more of that. This question of leadership is a serious one. It seemed to be one of her strends. The famous 3 00 a. M. Phone call ad that she ran against president barack obama. And i dont know that anyone feels thats the case with america today. No. Thats one of the problems youll have. It should be a key strength. Some that comes with potential liabilities.
