Ben carsons endorsement for donald trump . Do they see it as a gamechanger . Reporter deirdre, this is unlikely to be a gamechanger. If we looked at this political season so far and what endorsements have meant, there is debate really on both sides just how much they actually impact or sway voters. Take donald trump for one example. Most highprofile endorsement before dr. Ben carson today was governor sarah palin. She was unveiled right before iowa with. Trump ended up losing iowa and lost alaska caucuses which is palins home state. Might this give him some sort of a boost . Sure. It can certainly help donald trump. But a gamechanger, that might be a little too much, a little too far going with that term. It is, if you take the 1,000foot view here though, not necessarily unlikely that donald trump would receive the endorsement of dr. Ben carson. Carson of course is a political outsider, somebody who has not run for office ever in his career and he is endorsing donald trump, a political outsider, somebody who has never run for office in his career. However, as you also remember things got pretty heated back in november between trump and carson, really onesided as trump went on the attack of coarse son as carson started rising in the polls, especially not only nationally but also in iowa as well. He went after whether carson, he went after carsons faith. Went after his storyline as a child. Reason at one point compared him to a child molester. This was the quote at the time. Im quoting here. If youre a child molester, there is no cure. They cant stop you. Path owe logical, there is no cure. Carson he said was pathological. Now you have four months later endorsement for donald trump from ben carson. He called trump a very intellectual man who cares deeply about america. He called him cerebral as well. There was a moment that kind of put trump on defensive a little bit. Carson said there are two Donald Trumps, one you see privately and one you see publicly. That had reporters asking what donald trump are we seeing now . Yeah there are two trumps. Walked it back, there is only one donald trump. Either way a big endorsement for trump. Deirdre it is. That was political stuff and you know, that happens in american politics, the politics of personal destruction, all that. You heard my colleague say it is not really a gamechanger but it moves the needle slightly. Do you agree with that . I agree with blakes assessment. The endorsements this election cycle have not met as much as they have previously. As blake pointed out sarah palin endorsed donald trump. He did not carry alaska. Marco rubio has recipient of most endorsements from sitting governors and representatives. That has not done enough jolt his campaign as he so desperately needs it. Sew lid nyes the Republican Base for donald trump. It helps with evangelical christians. There is a lot of focus on ohio and florida, important winnertakeall states. We also cant forget illinois and missouri. If you look at a state like missouri, 35 or 36 of republican primary voters are evangelical christians. Perhaps this moves the needle a little bit with evangelical christians trump will try to pick up. Deirdre fair enough. So far he has actually done better than expected than that group at cruzs expense. Jessica, dr. Carson says there are two trumps. Here is a quick sound bite and i want to get your opinion on it. There are two different Donald Trumps. Theres the one you see on the stage and there is the one who is very cerebral, sits there, considers things very carefully. That is the donald trump you will start seeing more and more of right now. Deirdre when you think of president ial candidate, steadiness of character, versus unpredictability, which has more value, not a facetious question. Maybe dealing with foreign leaders maybe it is useful to be unpredictable . I dont think this is unpredictable. Donald trump will throw out there more than a curveball every once in a while. This is where ben carson has very little political skills. He went out there and said that and donald trump obviously had to walk it back. Trump talked about this as well in the debate and in the morning after when he had a conversation about some of his comments. You know, he said, i said some things but that doesnt mean thats who i am. On tuesday night he said, i can be president ial when i want to but i guess i just didnt want when i was standing up on the debate stage. Deirdre i think the idea say what it takes to get support to get elected and then i will do the job after. Well, maybe. I cant really tell what his definition of doing the job is. For me ive never been a tremendous fan of ben carson but really calls into question what he is thinking. Whether he is, actually more of a politician at the core, he thinks donald trump is on his way to the nomination and i want to get on with that. He talked to him about education. I would have thought he would go for Surgeon General but maybe wants to head education department. Im not sure here but he was talking to neil in the last hour, evangelical is someone who has jesus christ as centerpiece of his life. I dont think anyone including donald trump could argue that jesus christ is centerpiece of his life. It is concerning to me. Evangelical voters dont seem to have problem with it. Who am i to say. Im a jew. Deirdre speaking of, speaking of religious matters, a reporter did ask dr. Carson if god led him to backing donald trump . Heres what doctor carson said. Dr. Carson you said throughout your life god has led you to your most important decisions. This truly is an important decision. Did god lead you to donald trump . I prayed about it a lot and i got a lot of indications, people calling me, that i havent talked to for a long time saying, i had this dream but and donald trump. Just amazing things. But you know, i also tend to think that the way god speaks to you is by giving you wisdom and that wisdom says to me that if we allow this attempt to disrupt the will of the people to be successful, it will fracture the party in irreparable way. Deirdre so, lisa, did dr. Carson do it to keep the party from splitting . Do you think thats where he is coming from . You know, potentially. We have seen a schism in the party in the sense of 2 3 of Republican Voters have not voted for donald trump but that said, democrats and independent voters voting in some of the contests that republicans have had. So i think there is something to be said there to trying to unite the party. I really think well know a lot on march 15th. We might not know everything depending what happens but if donald trump gets to that 1237 he needs to clinch the nomination i do think youll have a lot of people like ben carson, where may have been previous disputes between donald trump and that individual maybe step forward and throw their support behind donald trump. Similarly like we saw with governor chris christie. That being said this thing is not over. March 15th is still heading up and a variety of scenarios could play out here. Deirdre indeed. Is part of why you are supporting senator cruz the idea that you there is just a calmer, kind of water around him . We think donald trump is unsuitable in a lot of ways. As general matter im not one to say, political rhetoric causes violence. I also dont like people going to any event heckling a speaker. That is just wrong. But as you point out trump specifically encouraged people whit violence against protesters. There is part of plurality that doesnt care, but when he gets to be the nominee that will be hard deirdre it is provoked. People are going to the rallies specifically to cause trouble. Correct. Deirdre im assuming every candidate faces that and every Candidates Team is given a different level of instruction, is that right . Right. What you gently want to do is find some way to shame the heckler or make the heckler book bad and urge your supporters to be better than the heckler and rise above it. Trump does the opposite. Like get down on this guys level. Knock him out. Punch him. Throw him out. Deirdre that is why people love him because they feel like he understands what theyre thinking and he therefore almost more represents what they want. We in islam, we have to reform. We can not be in the position where 1. 7 billion muslims are antagonizing the whole world. So trump may have said it more bluntly and in more rahway but the leaders of islam are saying they have a problem, recognizing they have a problem and we must change the way we interpret and educate. Heritage economist steve moore is with me now. Glad you are here. Does rubios plan add up . Look, i think that first of all, i think cruz and kasich have the right plans on Social Security. Remember last night they said we should start moving the system towards a personal account system. You put your money into essentially a 401 k or ira account. Not cutting benefits, and i think one of the thing, if you get more growth in the economy, i talk about this every time on the show. The economy is not growing fast enough. If we get back to 3 1 2 to 4 growth where we should be, Social Security you will grow your way out of it. You have more people paying and working into the system. Lets move to a personal system my kids get a much higher return. If they can put the money into an ira, they can retire with double the income they would get out of Social Security. Deirdre donald trump said leave Social Security the way it is, almost in a nod to what youre saying, when growth comes back, the system takes care of itself . It doesnt entirely take care of it, but you have to start with growth, and i agree with marco rubio, by the way, i think it makes a lot of sense to phase in a higher retirement age. My goodness my kids are going to live into their 90s hopefully. Some kids into the hundreds. We should index that retirement age, we cant afford to have People Living 30, 40 years on Social Security. Deirdre people saying right now we are almost abusing our kids, grandkids and Great Grandkids because there is not going to be anything left for them. Thats true. Deirdre trump clarified his call for a 45 tariff on chinese goods. This is last nights debate, saying that is a threat, if china doesnt follow the rules. Ted cruz responded in this way. Weve got to get beyond rhetoric of china bad and actually get to how do you solve the problem . Because this solution would hurt jobs and hurt hard working taxpayers in america. Deirdre so steve, you are an economist, you study these things. Which person is right . Ted cruz is right. I mean look, one of the pillars of growth is free trade. By the way, i thought ted cruz was very good when he explained, look, every time you go into walmart, you have to pay more for all the things that you buy if you have the tariff. On the other hand, and im not defending donald trump on, this but what he is saying is he wants to use this as a negotiating tactic, a hammer over the head of the chinese, and you know, look, maybe that might make some sense because chinas clearly violating the trade rules. Clearly stealing our patents, stealing our intellect ral property. Workers say lets get tougher with china. If thats what he means, i can live with that. If you look at fine print on numbers what they spend in 2013 alone, 30 Million Dollars on salaries, 24 Million Dollars on conferences. People that look at these things, deirdre, say this is way out of line. Should have been spending a lot more on the veterans and a lot less on the execs. So i want to ask but another legal issue, the fbi coming back on apple, the back and forth for months now and essentially the Justice Department and the fbi saying apple, you owe us this information. And you did it for china, other places, you did it before, not giving it to us, you give it to us now, and theyre getting really rough. Deirdre and apple saying its a cheap shot. Exactly. I think at the end of the day, the proverbial day, its going to happen. The department of justice will get this information. If this is terrorism, theyve got to give this over. The point, does it change anything legally that the phone that were talking about was used by one of the San Bernardino shooters. Absolutely. I had people in hollywood, friends of mine saying everybody out there is voting for you, but theyre not going to admit it. Why . Arent you proud . No, because i have a tough stance on crime. I have a tough stance on borders. They all know im right. Theyre liberal people, dont want to admit it, theyre going to vote for trump. Deirdre numerous celebrities have spoken up for trump, jon voight, kid rock, stephen baldwin, so is my next guest, you know him from james bond films to the gooneys, numerous others, actor singer robert davi. Great to have you back. Great to be here. Deirdre you are in hollywood, and tolds you in the past there are quiet Trump Supporters there, right . Absolutely. Theyre getting slowly more vocal. You know, i wrote an article june 16 when trump was giving his initial speech, and again, a lot of people were, you know, not quite on the bandwagon yet or didnt see what his potential was. And as weve gone along, and as weve been winning the primaries, im seeing more and more people coming out and because i write an article and am visible, they come up to me and say were supporting trump. Never come out and say verbally yet but support him. Much like they did with ronald reagan. I remember in the 1980s i had just come to hollywood, doing my first film with Frank Sinatra and hollywood wasnt rallying initially, hugely around ronald reagan. There were major stars, of course, but i find the same thing today. Deirdre thats funny, art laffer who worked in reagans administration said the same thing. He said, just remember when reagan was in the running, there were a lot of people saying he wasnt up to the job, and he took a lot of criticism. Huge criticism. They, they, they made fun of his intelligence and his policies. You see reagan, like donald trump, thought big ideas. I remember when reagan talked about the star wars defense, he got such ridicule for that, and meanwhile, israel is using that star wars defense idea. Deirdre right. I find a lot of similarities with reagan. And phyllis shatly who supported reagan is supporting donald trump, calling him the last hope like i did in one of my articles. We see the gop establishment. And a lot of people say its reaction to obama. I dont necessarily agree with that totally. Deirdre okay. I think that the gop, overall, has let public down, has left the voters down with, trade, with immigration. Ive written about that since 2010. I met with the Republican Leadership in 2010, asking them to take immigration seriously. And we continually see that they dont. So donald trump comes along and puts out a platform they now see in last nights debate, astounding to see ted cruz and marco rubio all starting to take Donald Trumps positions on certain things that when he first came out with them they were disagreeing. Deirdre that proves your point about him being a leader. I want to ask you, especially in hollywood, about the other side. George clooney, one recently slamming donald trump in an interview, saying hes an opportunist, a fascist, a zen phobic fascist. Do you think that other celebrities who want to work with clooney or spout that opinion are afraid to speak up for themselves and their beliefs because they dont want to miss out on a job . A thousand percent, im out of the box. For whatever reason, i am not that smart to keep my mouth shut. I dont play that game. And ive suffered from it in hollywood. Deirdre so you feel like you have, for sure . Absolutely, and most people in hollywood that would want to come out and say things than there will be because you know what . If you dont go to the liberal fundraiser, if youre not at the big dinner. Deirdre yeah, youre not in the club. Youre not in the club and not hired. You suffer when you come out forward for some of your beliefs. Thats the way it is. Deirdre so is this the last acceptable prejudice to come against somebody who has more conservative values or who sees politics more to the right than to the left . They talk about racism in america. There is a you know, and in the 50s, you had the mccarthy era. Thats going on in hollywood today. Thats going on. You have backlash against conservatives. And the thing about it is donald trump calls himself a commonsense conservative, what i consider myself to be. On some of the social issues, theyre not so in goose step. Thats where the left, i think, will eventually, when they start hearing donald trump is what dr. Carson said today about him. When hes a nuance guy, donald trump. You can sit down and talk to him. You can also know that he could look at a budget, theres a great story about the wallman rink in new york, that i dont want to go into. Deirdre suggest people to google it, it is a good story indeed. Its a great story, and they have to see that donald trump worked with inside politics and saved a lot of money and did something where it took six years and 13 Million Dollars, the government wasted and donald trump did it within four months and saved 7 Million Dollars.
