The trip coming as the president trying to move full steam ahead on his agenda and said to deliver 2018 Budget Proposal to lawmakers this coming tuesday, balancing the better budget by making serious cuts like food stamps, sparing two of the biggest deficit drivers medicare and Social Security. Maria is this what you think he should be doing in terms medicare and Social Security not being part of the conversation . Well, eventually its going to have to be but i think if we focus on things like you mentioned, food stamps, we had 11 Million People on food stamps under president obama, obviously thats a big problem. We need to maybe not focus so much on taking Social Security away from people, but maybe look at raising the age limits. He definitely needs to move forward on this, though. Maria something has to give, right,agen. Thats where the money is. Dagen its about entitlements, its about half of annual federal spending. And President Trump, he said on the campaign trail that they werent going to touch them. Ultimately they will have to take a hatchet to both Social Security and medicare. Social security is easy just moving money around but with medicare is somebodys health, somebodys livelihood. White house is projecting that the nations Economic Growth will rise to 3 which Steve Mnuchin has talked about with you by 2021. So its not just in this budget and the cuts that the Trump Administration wants to make, that does fall on getting tax reform done and getting the overhaul of obamacare done and again, those are big question marks right now in terms of what congress can get done. Maria i think the average growth rate for the u. S. Was 1. 6 in 2016, we are talking about below 2 now for a couple of years. Dagen we havent grown at 3 for a decade. Not one year during president obamas term did we grow at 3 or north of that. So theres a lot riding on not just this budget but what gets done, cutting taxes or cutting the taxes and reforming the Health Care System as we know it. The fact that the president wants to make this a more fair system also a more simple tax code, thats going to make a huge difference for somebody like myself who would actually understand what im doing when its time to file. Maria thats a great point. Lets talk about the trip. Before departing to the trip trump weighed in on politics. Hes denying, of course, any collusion between campaign and russia. He said this again yesterday. Watch this. The entire thing has been a witch hunt and there is no collusion between certainly myself and my campaign, but i can always speak for myself and the russians, zero. I think it divides the country. I think we have a very divided country because of that and many other things. Maria you know, its incredible how long we have been talking about this investition and still yielding no evidence whatsoever and its taking away from the real meat and potatoes that the people want to hear about which we talk about every morning which is the agenda. Actually said that she still has seen no evidence of collusion, can we move on . Can we stop with the tweets . We need to focus on accomplishments and quit this narrative. Dagen the appointment of special counsel will give President Trump and the white house some breathing room if he can stay off twitter. If he can stop drawing attention to the investigation. If he can stop talking about the investigation into russia colluding and its a number of different things. Again, when theres a report in the media that he doesnt like, will he be able to say nothing, thats going to be critical to, again, talk about the he did it yesterday talk about the American People what youre doing for the u. S. Economy and not about yourself, quite frankly. Maria give us some evidence that, in fact, you are working on the agenda, things are moving forward. Thats what the markets want to see. There was a interview and actually called this trial by press. Let the special prosecutor do his job, lets move on, get what needs to be accomplished for the American People. Maria what do you make of what lou dobbs said yesterday . Theres absolute no evidence of any crime and we have a special prosecutor looking at this. Right. Maria i thought it was a good analysis from lou dobbs. Hes absolutely correct. The list goes on and on and not once was there a special prosecutor brought up. Where were republicans then . Why are there republicans now joining democrats now . Are they wanting to be liked by the media or liked by certain donors . Im really tired of this and i think a lot of the republicans who voted for the president and the independent and south democrats are too. Dagen President Trump should be thankful that theres a prosecutor because there are special circumstances of mueller like the fact that your attorney general had to recuse himself in the first place and the fact that the jim comey although justified did come out of no where and poorly communicated to the American People. Again, this white house needs to remember the American People are your shareholders in this company that youre running and you owe to everybody. Roger was a giant in the Television Business and before that in politics, on a personal level for me he was a true mentor and a friend for two decades. It was roger who first put me on the air on cnbc23 years ago, i was a young 26yearold producer from cnn and taught me to be on tv and made the decision to put me on the floor of the new york stock exchange. It was a first and contrersial but helped and cnbc soaring, i stayed at that network for 20 years long after roger left to create fox news and fox business but we never lost touch. Three years ago he hired me a second time to help grow the fox business network. This network started tinny and today we are winning and we are growing, we are beating the competition, that, of course, was a staple of roger ailes. On big nights like the president ial debates and primary debates, he stayed close to onair team and produce toaster make sure we all stayed true to who we are and that we had fun doing it. In term of gains that we saw yesterday and expecting it again today, what do you think is going on . The midst of all the volatility . Well, actually there was a gapup open and what happened was the market sold off in order to fill the gaps. It was blamed on Trump Administration and all the volatility and the market reversed correctly and came right back up. I dont think we are going see a sell off yet. Maria basically hedge funds and Money Managers are saying, unless something goes horribly wrong with the agenda, you still want to own stocks. Thats exciting in terms of opportunity for Fund Managers to make money now in 2017 is really where this volatility trade has gone in the last, since the french election, right. It has hit historical lows. I think theres a great opportunity f macro segies to make money in the environment. Maria we havent seen any volatility in a while. Dagen because theres so muchsd what is not happening out of our nations capitol, the most unpredictable president of the United States in terms of how he communicates, youre lit literally is placing bets on what is said by the president and what comes out of washington which makes it that much more tricky given the lowgrowth environment. Maria but weve talked allot in the past about the fact that underlying strength is there. Firstquarter profits were up 15 which is pretty good. Revenue is up 6 and stronger than expected dollar. How does all that jive, ken . As you know, the Hedge Fund Industry is all about finance and finance is all about politics and politics is all about donald trump right now and everything comes back to that in terms of trading, signal that is people are focusing on and, yes, i do think theres underlying strength that people are expecting fundamentally or to see Interest Rates continue to rise and see the positive impact that has on overall market performance. Maria what are hedge funds doing right now . All of the same trades are still very much in place and people are very focused on maria like what . The drivers of performance in 2017, you the sort of isolating pattern of the wine and unwind, the brexit implementation trade and the the eu trade. Maria the eu trade is an important one. Youre seeing money move into europe in a big way right now. A lot of people talking about europe. Remember last weekend, why europe and thats what youre seeing, arent you, francis . Yeah, because we are going to end up selling the United States the end of the this year when the fed raises rates two more times. Theyre actually going to tighten the aggregate money supply and we will see a selloff in the fall and i think europe, by europe trade, i dont think the tightening is happening there tat right that its happening here. Maria money in europe. Dagen in terms of the tightening as you rationalize the Balance Sheet by the Federal Reserve, thats why you need to see movement on the fiscal side. Thats why it becomes much more critical. No tax reform, no health care overhaul, we are getting a recession. Maria shes great. She will join us next week. But i sat down with the former Federal Reserve ben per nikki and there is some shortterm and longterm treads. He connected with this enfranchised americans. In terms of the recovery from the Great Recession the gastric economy is really doing quite well. Then implement rate is 4. 4 percent. The stock market is up as you mentioned. All of those things are very positive. But i have to give candidate trump added that he did identify some real dissatisfaction in the country and it relates it is a very longterm treads. A lot of inequality. Slow wage growth and things in the middle part of the country and among people with less education. Let me ask you about the Federal Reserve Balance Sheet. We are expected a bit of a unwinding there. How are they going to do that what are we up to a 5 trillion. It is a huge amount of money. But its about a quarter of u. S. Gdp similar to other large central banks. They want to and wind. And they will begin that process later this year or early next year. And the weight they will do it at least they have told us theyre simply going to stop reinvesting so that when the securities at mature instead of taking that money and buying a new security and replacing it they will just let it run off. And that process will allow the Balance Sheet to very slowly decline over about three to four year time and get back to something that will be more sustainable over time. It wont had as much of an impact as some people are worried about. What kind of impact does unwinding have on markets and on the economy. It is fully anticipated by the markets at this point. It will add a little bit of upward pressure. They can react to that by postponing for example an increase in the federal funds rate. Or otherwise trying to adjust for it. I think it will not cause a lot of problems. Most people in america wont even be aware of it. The use of the Balance Sheet to help get us back to full employment and now that another we are there there together gradually allow it to unwind. I do not think it will be a big dipper big deal for markets and the economy. You came up with incredibly innovative ways to get us back. You say right now things are looking a lot better and that we are certainly seen a good situation with unemployment where it is. One of the economists that i speak with a lot. Look at tax receipts and income and said when you look at the tax receipt you can see that americans are not making enough money to actually put that back into the economy in terms of Consumer Spending do you worry about that. I Pay Attention to that also. If you look at the job creation and the fact that wages are growing more quickly now betweenore jobs and higher wages we are seeing more income and its reflected when you ask consumers how do they feel about their own financial situations that are more upbeat about that than they had been quite a few years. I think the engine will continue to be consumers and households and income has been Strong Enough that it will support the spending. What a week we have. Are you surprised that they are starting to say to themselves look maybe we wont get that big tax cut that we were expecting. Maybe we will wont get the policy that we were expecting. Is this the beginning of something bigger. I think the markets over did it early on. And they have come back down to earth as they recognize the policy changes are going to be slower, smaller and later than originally thought. On the other hand the u. S. Economy is doing pretty will in the Global Economy is doing better than it has for a while. The european economy has picked up. Its more of a Global Recovery going on right now as well as in the good seats. A good market is justified but again as you say is not going to be as big or as effective as some of the markets originally were anticipating. A lot of conversation happening about europe in japan do you worry that we havent really seen much change in the emerging markets so far. They had been underwater now for years. The emerging markets depend a lot on whats happening in the advanced economies and also in china. So long as china chinas growing okay which has recently in the u. S. Is doing okay oil prices are kind of middling right now. All the things are good enough that emerging markets i think are doing better. Theyre very dependent on china but also on the u. S. For their growth. And that generally has a better. They made some good adjustments. Then a lot of trouble if you years ago.
