I never understood why radical islamic terrorists we were so afraid of that term because its exactly right, youre separating the moderates and isnt it true that moderate muslims feel that this is a poison. They wanted to differentiate, how do you think the muslim world feels about him using that term in. I think its mixed. But overall i think theyre supportive and what needs to happen here, at tend of the day, we cannot kill all of these radicals, we have to defeat radicals so kids do not grow attest to that decision. To keep america safe we must provide the men and women of the United States military with the tools they need to prevent war, if they must, they have to fight and they only have to win. I am sending congress a budget that rebuilds the military, eliminates the defense sequester. Maria now, the white house says that the president is seeking a 54 billiondollar increase in defense spending. What do you think about that number, is that the right number . And rebuilding, where should the rebuilding be in our military . Yeah, yeah, great question. First of all, its a step in the right direction. The American People got to recognize that for a number of years now we have been depleting the United States military to the point where we are not the credible deterrent that we used to be and i dont think the number is adequate, frankly, senator mccains number of 91 billion is a lot closer than what we need. The president said yesterday on fox that hes prepared possibly to add another 30 billion to this 54 billion, if thats the case, then now we start to move in the right direction. But itll take a number of years to get back to where we need to be and what we need to do is invest in readiness and training because so many of our organizations right now are not prepared to fight today. To give you a sense of how dramatic it is, 50 to 75 of our aircraft are not able to fly because of maintenance problems. Maria wow, 50 to 75 . Depending on the service. The United States Army Ground Forces only onethird of their combat units are ready to fight today. Thats the seriousness of the problem and all the services are too small. We need more ships, more airplanes and we need more troops on the Ground Services and the third is that Technology Gap of adversaries has closed on us. So you see cruise missiles out there, Stealth Technology out there, advanced offensive missiles, defensive, air defense missiles. All of those advantage that is we used to have, our adversaries have. Some of them have capability that is we do not have, modernization is a word that describes new technology and we need to invest in that as well. Its a comprehensive approach and its got to start now. Maria how did they get ahead of us in terms of modernization. The things that youre saying are pretty stunning in terms of readiness. The last major buildup we truly had in the military was in fact, the reagan buildup and then after that we had the collapse of the soviet union and we began to cut back. Here are the principles that should guide congress as we move to create a better Healthcare System for all americans. First, we should ensure that americans with preexisting conditions have access to coverage and that we have a stable transition for americans currently enrolled in the health care exchanges. Secondly, we should help purchase coverage through use of tax credits and expanded savings account and must be the plan they want and not the plan forced on by the government. Maria the issue of affordability has been the major problem. Do these changes that hes talking about address affordability . To address affordability you will have to deal with the cost drivers of health care, he did mention thfda approval process which clearly is a cost driver. It slows down innovation, time is money, a billion dollars to get a new fda approval, he didnt mention the liability that causes doctors and hospitals to do procedures simply to cover themselves but i know he cares about it. Ultimately he is moderate on health care. Hes made it clear, he doesnt want to pull the rug out. He doesnt believe that we are going to eliminate all subsidies and credits and he wants to see health care for all. So i would say that, you know, democrats may be missing an opportunity to reach out to get, if you will, obamacare plus. Maria but what about the debate within the house, i mean, when you look at obamacare . Are you going to be able to get something done on obamacare in terms of repeal and replace . Its hard because obamacare more than anything else is a tax so you repeal the tax great, but you lose revenue, it is after that a large direct expansion of medicaid and in my own community and around the country the Community Clinics have benefited huge amounts of money and new programs and eligibility and so any time you throw a trillion dollars at expanding people getting their health care paid for for free, you are going to do some good. We have to be careful not to undo some of that good. You know, i will give you an example. Children coming in and having basic dental exams, the basic ability to do eye examinations to see if somebody has early diabetes and so on. You want to keep preventive things at Community Clinics and so on. The president is going to have to work closely not just with repealing taxes but with realizing that some of these expanded programs are going to remain popular, they are going to remain popular with governors around the country. Maria we are seeing the popular ity rise. You have been vocal about saying if theres a conflict, Jeff Sessions has to stand aside in terms of looking at the connection between russia and trust. You would like to see a special prosecutor investigate what russia did with regard to the election . Well, we are all investigating what russia did. What we need to do is real that back when we had the valerie plane case in the bush administration, there was an appearance of a conflict, the attorney general named under the statute that they do someone and allowed that person to continue the investigation and it led to charges. We may not like that, but if theres so much as one shred of evidence of somebody close to the president involved with russia in that conspiracy, if you will, it would have to be investigated. But lets remember adam himself has had opportunities this is the democrat Ranking Member of Intelligence Committee say do you have it and his answer is we need to investigate more. I side with him, investigation more, if theres evidence, do the do it exactly the way it was done in the bush administration.
