Connell we are moments away from president obama expected to announce tighter fuel efficiency standards, holding maryland, part of the pledge in the state of the union address. Dagen the column that is there with more on this, this all trickles down to the consumer one way or another any time you increase fuel economy. Special materials unique to make new vehicles if they are lighter materials like aluminum or manganese, so if that happens, then the price has to go up because the consumer has to pay for that or profits go down too much and we end up bailing out the company or you could get more fuel economy by putting gas tax, that hits the poor disproportionately so somebody pays for it. Some would be opposed on the surface and wouldnt get as far as we have gotten but just for the sake of argument the most efficient way to do it . These larger vehicles have been raised, in place, on track to double the fuel efficiency vehicles by 2025 so it is a little more than ten years from now. Is it necessary . Oil prices are stubbornly high. That reduces fuel consumption. It does reduce fuel consumption and we also have extra oil and gas produced in this country and it looks like maybe a deal cut with iran and this will be oil on the world market, oil prices go down considerably and it goes down considerably this will look ridiculous. The president s supporters make that as a deception. And he is not even addressing people who would be against this and made a point Dagen Mcdowell made inert question. It would be irrelevant to some people. We will look back on this as ridiculous and a few years. Of the iran deal goes through we could see oil prices go down 50 a barrel. When i analyze the market, typically we look at things like overbought, oversold measures and we may be overbought, the momentum has overruled that condition. Dagen what about overall Market Participation . Hasnt really given way. It hasnt. It has been quite broad. If you look at cumulative measures over the long term they are very supportive of the market and the s p moving to new highs and if you look at the more sensitive shortterm indicators the levels that should be considered oversold in the last two weeks or so where for example 20 of the market was above its 50 Day Moving Average that is the good sign that has come off of high extreme level so it is an oversold buy and sell signal. Dagen what would you reduce your . Corners of the world, specific sectors . I would take down exposure to the more interestrate sensitive sectors of the market, utilities would be an example outperforming dagen like oil . Energy is collected, underperformance but there are spots of strength but i would consider reads, taking that next exposure selecting homebuilders as well. Dagen what looks attractive . What do you add to . Cyclical sectors, technology, industrials, even financials getting pretty interesting. And you have these nice established up trends. Dagen would you add back to emerging markets even if you didnt reduce just your position was your position got smaller because of the selloff . This is true but i am a fan of the emerging markets. I do think it is an out of consensus call and they underperformed significantly recently but we have some buy signals in that space that overbought and oversold and a lot of charts have good support nearby meaning it is a likely area of buying pressure. Dagen is there one indicator that is screening red flag . Screening get out that you do find worse on this point . Might just be one and not cumulative . Nothing ever jumps out but what would be troubling would be breakdown from the charts, charts that are breaking support or areas where they have previously seen than and now is not there anymore and they have not seen that much in back of burning season in the u. S. Generally positive response to the earnings regardless of what the earnings were. Overall more break out and if we see widespread breakdowns that would be concerning. Do we see some kind of erosion and the economic fundamentals because of that . I think that theyre tapering is very much engaged towards that. Connell these numbers are nothing to get excited about. People will file lawsuits. People will have been harmed because they were not told this information soon enough. Jurors using their own judgment throughout the country will decide whether it was 24 hours, 48 hours or 72 hours. I am hardly one in favor of federal laws in areas where the federal government does not have the authority under the constitution. This is becoming a very serious problem. Connell connell did this, dagen did that. It is always me for whatever reason. If you go into court, they need to tell us about this. I need to know right away if my privacy has been breached. What is the argument on the other side . It took us so long to figure out what happened. There is no way you can figure this out. The plaintiff would say, in that 96 hour time if you had told me, none of this would have happened. A jury would have to decide who they believe. These cases will be tried with different degrees of professionalism. Dagen i know that you argue that the free markets will work. Hopefully. There are barriers to entry. Dagen they try to keep this information from leaking out. That is a major breach. They rather keep it secret rather than the whole world finding out. If they intend to keep it secret. You have an obligation to keep your customer from being harmed. You cannot keep that secret from the customer. You are suggesting they kept that secret because they did not want the bad publicity that they ended up getting. If that is the case, that ratchets this up. It is one thing to say i was harmed by target that it is one thing to say i was harmed by target intentional decision to keep the truth from me. By what standard do we determine that . There is no standard. It is a free market. The free market should scare the daylights out of target. It will permit people to vote with their pocketbooks by going somewhere else. There was one instance years ago. Your account information may have been breached. That is the way it is usually stated. You go to your bank and you get different numbers. You are completely safe. You do not know who breached it or how. You wanted to report about it. [laughter] connell this is one of the stories that seems simple. If they know this, they should tell us. I thought they were dragging their feet. They had the best computer experts they could find trying to figure out what happened. With pr issues and how to address those rather than suffering the avalanche of negative pr. Dagen beyond that, it seems to suggest that they did not have their arms around it. That is troubling. You have a fiduciary obligation under the law to preserve and protect that information. If it has been breached because you looked the other way, you have an obligation to stop the flow. Connell the stocks really not moving a whole heck of a lot. In general, it seems like the market really sells off. Lets bring in keith flips. We think the market is going to move higher. Investors are still reeling for the month of january. What is your outlook for the rest of the year . The returns were incredibly high. There is a little bit more volatility associated with it. We are poised for a better open. Lets talk about the weather of fact. This is one of the worst winters we have seen in 30 years. The market has to take that into account. Did they take it with stride or do you think investors are a little bit more nervous . I think they are taking stride. You are seeing the nasdaq doing much better. It is about sector rotation this year. We have not been out for a while. The asset class has been correlated. This is the beginning stages. The beginning stages of people looking for opportunities within each area as opposed to risk on risk off mentality. Not just this year. It would take a few more years of the enormous harvest to have Something Like that happen, so for the moment it counteracts short vintages so that is terrific. It is hard to tell because 2014 is such a weird year because of the lack of any water events. Cheryl i didnt think that was an issue. Drought conditions have been going on for two years in california. I was not concerned about that and you say it is an issue . It is becoming an issue because you start using that youre underground water and so on and it has gotten very extreme and there was a little bit of rain recently but you looking at record lows in terms of rainfall for california in this period and it is an additive thing where you get more problems as time goes by. The thing about wine is it is agriculture and nature is unpredictable so you get a fantastic year and it falls apart again. This is in recent weeks. Three at jpmorgan. Sandra how old were these people . They were all in their mid, you know, between 20 and 30. 20 ant 40. In that sort of sweet spot of your career which is kind of odd. You know, the first death was a suicide at deutsche bank. And again, you know, we dont want to say that there is anything related here but it is weird that youve had a string, this is the largest string of deaths wall street has seen since the financial crisis when people were obviously distraught. Sandra can i interrupt for a second . Yes. Sandra just hearing story for the first time, my initial thought is you have to give me more. How is this not just average of suicides that happen within population and death that is occur . The Banking Industry is huge globally. When was the last time you heard of six dying no offense, Banking Industry is covered regularly. When was the last time you read Something Like 24 . Sandra that is what im saying. That is your context. Ashley some people, to sandras point, sometimes when someone gets on to a story you start to see other stories adding on to it. Sandra yeah. Ashley because were looking for it. Whether its a Conspiracy Theory or not, a lot of this is happening in europe. A lot of these folks are affected directly by very stiff financial regulations over there where bonuses are being slashed. So theres talk about that. So im just saying that i dont know the reason and sometimes you just report the facts. I am sell telling you i have not seen Something Like this and you if you can find ashley have they had any statements from the banks . Theyre acknowledging that it happened but not drawing any conclusion. This hasnt happened like this in a long time since the financial crisis. Casey stiegel joins us with a look at the rigorous Training Program the pilots must complete before taking to the skies. Casey. Reporter about 1500 pilots they will be hiring over next five years. That is roughly 50 or so every single month. It is the first time this leg basy carrier has hired such a large amount since the revents of september 11th we all know really changed the Airline Industry as a whole. Of course youve got to have a lot of flying experience under your belt to do this. About 60 of the americans pilots have military experience. They like people that have flown for the air force lets say. They are looking for the very best. So far they received 10,000 applications. Theyre vetting all the applications. Theyre still hiring. So its a very small number of people who actually make the cut. There are a couple of Different Reasons for this hiring blitz if you will. Number one, a lot of new routes are being added as the American Airlines and Us Airways Merger plays out. It will be a combined workforce of american and us Airways Pilots but they still need more for those additional routes. A number of current pplots are set to retire in the coming year, so theyre preparing for that. And also the new American Airlines is taking delivery of a bunch of new airplanes. In fact at the rate of two a week or so. So theyre working toward obtaining the youngest fleet among the domestic carriers and so they are training new pilots to fly those newer planes in the skies as well. Casey stiegel, thank you so much.
