It is gold. Woodsons leave swan. 3 billion, lets start. Nicole petallides at the Stock Exchange with that breaking story. Nicole we started to learn about these tweets and they were confirmed after that, 3 billion of investments for carl icahn over that amount in apples so now with that we watched the stocks this morning moving to the upside and here is, 1. 3 . If you look at an intraday chart around 1040 one to be specific, there was a big spike in volume and we saw the stock pot. It the lowest debt that it was 5. 47. And investors, Share Buybacks, this is the big plan, apple is doing a great disservice to the shareholders by refusing to sharply increase the buyback program. I never heard that before. Tweet along with us. We will be back to Nicole Petallides in a moment. We head to don bose as well. The worlds wealthiest for the wealthiest americans are getting hit with higher taxes for 2013 and new top tax rate of 40 for this tax year along with the medicare taxes to pay for obamacare, joined by boston to talk about this by fred wayne and vice chairman of Investment Banking at Raymond James who rejoins us today so you have this new top tax rate bringing up a conversation about the effect of all that. What do you think . Will there be a bigtime effect on the investment and more people getting hit . I dont believe that to be the case. We are going back to the clinton era rates, 39. 6 . The Incremental Healthcare tax, going to be costly, i think the troubling part about that is, 250,000 of earned income regardless of the marginal rate and another tax at 3. 8 over 250,000 income for dividends, interest in capital gains. As usual the lower rates on earned income, higher rates on unending come as if it wasnt earned and of course usually income is earned, one has to invest to generate capital gains, one has to take aftertax earnings so the idea of taxing income at a higher rate continues the dialogue around theres a difference between savings and having assets are having earned income. What is more virtuous than the other. Connell one of the things i picked out from your statement at the beginning of your marks opening up the dialogue is you dont think there will be a huge effect, i am sure people heard them over and over again they will higher taxes and affect investments. How much of what you do in terms of investing, how much of that is affected by taxes . I run our Consumer RetailInvestment Banking business. What we like to see our stimulus to consumer spending. This is not the bigger dialogue here relates to both sides of the aisle being dug in on their positions, and democrats basically saying we must have higher taxes. That is the general position. Not saying there are out liars and exceptions to that and republicans say we must cut transfer payments. I will continue to say transfer payments good for the economy and lower taxes good for the economy and here is the thing. Transfer payments the real conversation should be how do we get people off of transfer payments into real jobs . If you want to create real job growth you should continue, you should lower taxes and you should continue the transfer of payments but again the idea, the objective of transfer payments should be to get people back to work. Did have that focus, not to maintain a dependency people have on the federal government support. Connell going down a party line on everything. Whatever the individual opinion on this is not necessarily the best thing on every course we talk about. Fred lane, we will talk again soon. Dagen they 1, 40 Fourth Avenue in switzerland, the biggest gathering of World Business and political leaders, but it wouldnt be davos without problems. Connell tends to draw varying agendas as one Economic Forum with the same goal, get access to the movers and shakers. Connell liz we are tiny swiss alps village. It is freezing at the moment but really heating up with all the movers and shakers as you call them and we are talking about the people who really matter in the world of business and of course World Leaders. There is a hierarchy. When you have an all access badge. We were able to get this, that opens doors to all kinds of business deals with many ceos do come here, a real regular here is mike freeze of Liberty Global. That is the Worlds Largest cable operator but absolutely future in europe. We could kick it off with you, a cable giant. You got the all access, you cant get anywhere without it. Tell me what your focus is while you are here, just arrived today. This is my canned year. The focus is across a few different areas. One is to get together with my peers and i will get with the other ceos and talk about our industry. We spent a lot of time with politicians. Where we do business, speed dating kind of meetings, 30 minutes but that is what you need to get the point across. You can network. People you need to know and get to know better are all here. Rich speed dating for business. Reporter i was on a panel on hyperconnectivity and our own event on friday where we were launching one of our policy studies talking about the imbalances on the web, going to dinner is and the same thing you are doing, getting to know people ledbetter and learning things. Liz your business is very europe centric. You are the largest cable operator in europe, you got operations in the u. K. Virgin media, made a big acquisition in germany. Last time we spoke you talked about how europeans cable bills are less than we pay in america. Our average bill is 45, 220 to 140 and offering faster broadband speak. Liz same channel . Same number . A lot of reasons for that. Primarily we dont have pressure from programming. Disney and espn and fox news, everyone wanted more and more and you were able to pass that along to an affluent consumer base. We dont have that same pressure. And i would rather start low and get high rather than start at 100 and watch netflix and take customers away. Liz what is the one feature you look forward to seeing that will be the most Important Development in the cable world in the next year or two. We are still waiting on apple tv in its mega farm, intel developed a tough box, that didnt work well. Has to do with bridging the functionality get. The average cable home has an antiquated died. Look at what we have done, what comcast has done, my kids dont bother with netflix or apple because the guide has been Something Like 3d graphics, recommendation engines, school navigation, getting that functionality right to me is a game set match because we got the content. Liz i would say cable was supposed to be the natural leader when it came to new developments in the sector and when you talk about what is really able to be accomplished people want for example to d b r something in their home but they end up in a hotel room or airport thousands of miles away and went on their mobile. Totally right. Moving content to multiple devices is something we do day. You can move content to your ipad, laptop for mobile phone. We are making that available. We dont have to be the first to innovate and make these things happen, we can follow quickly and have the content and customers in the bandwidth. That helps us to deliver these services better. Liz lets talk about programming in europe versus america. There is almost a new sense of excitement when it comes to the shows on amc like breaking bad, and downtown abbey on other networks. You just sold your content company to amc. Are content business was a series of channels that we are not that strategic but very strategic to amc who is looking to bring their brand and their shows into europe. Consumers in europe love television. Liz what are the hot shows . Breaking bad, homeland, they like all the same great shows we like in america because it is great content and those make their way here and will make their way here and various networks. Broadcasters in europe are very strong. Cable channels are getting stronger but broadcasters are strong. Liz is easy to deal with . Regulators in the United States regulators in europe . I used to say europe. The challenge in europe, easier. The challenge in europe is we have regular set the local level. We work with the german regulator and a u. K. Regulator and dutch regulator and they dont always agree with brussels little level Playing Field can be wildly from time to time. Liz from the perspective of Liberty Global and your business what is the one goal you have for 2014 that is different from last year . Good question. We are doing a lot of the same things. I got asked this question at an Investor Conference and i said our primary focus is growth. Dont own the stock if we are not growing. Secondly innovation, new products and all the things that grow. We want to make sure we are doing the right thing on scale and consolidation so we continue to grow through and then they end in europe and we are aggressive on our balance sheet, five times leverett. We believe in putting money back in shareholders pockets, we have done 13 billion in buybacks. Nothing is going to change dramatically. Liz viewers like that. Great to see you. He just arrived in davos. You have done well. Thank you very much. I am sure as much as he travels the state at a marriott or two. Geithners words that you can accept as reasonable, did you must discount. Dagen based on what was alleged, it looked very careful. Here is the context in which the affidavit came into play. The government sued for 5 billion for fraud. That is not based on the credit worthiness downgrade. This is based on other activity that the government says s p engaged in during the financial crisis. Mcgrawhill says, we want documents in discovery. Why do you need that . We want to show a pattern of mr. Timothy geithners behavior. They are trying to connect all of those thoughts. People trying to realize the value in the works that they bought as younger collectors. 142 million. Dennis is it true that no painting in the world ever is worth 140 million . What do you think . I would not say that. I would say you have a rare work of art that is neat and you have a few people that want it. Dennis enough supply of dollars out there to support it. Hedge fund guys are doing very well in the big runup in the stock market. Some of them had almost half a billion dollars private art collections on margin. Is margin a part of this allowing more higher prices to be paid and are we inflating the bubble . Typically, no. It is hard to get those types of loans. I would say that it is really not driving it at all. Dennis what is driving this and is it a bubble . I would say it is frothy. If one was looking for value, you would look elsewhere. Contemporary is really soaring. Everyone seems to be flocking towards that part of the market and ignoring other parts. Dennis if it is old, renaissance, it must be valuable. I think you are seeing a social phenomenon where there are art fairs and events. It has sort of seeped into popular culture. People like jayz doing things around art. It has become very integrated and pop culture. Dennis a decade ago, a big fight over a story about something being put into a magazine. Finally, regular people, not just multimillionaires being able to afford all these paintings. Has the web come along and brought in new bidders in any way . Has that helped raise prices . A little bit. It has not had the same type of an affect on the art industry as it has on others. People can find what prices to pay. It is making it harder for dealers to make markups. Dennis usually when something triples in price over a set number of years, you do some kind of correction before you can rebuild. Are we at a direction where they have to go down before they can go up . I would say the contemporary sector is proud to protections. The market protected very quickly. Dennis prices fell 50 for contemporary art which is now soaring. Even though we thought the richest people would be unaccepted by that. If you look at other sectors, more traditional sectors, they are less volatile. They have lower gains. 2,822,009, have prices come back up . Street cleaning rules yes, they are. Dennis are they up as much as stocks are . It depends on which exact part of the sector you are looking at. Dennis how much of the demand is driven by people who love art versus people who see it as a piece of paper . I think it is driven by people who are very sophisticated and know what they are doing. They are buying because they love it. Dennis thank you very much for being with us today. Great job. Think you. Cheryl smallcap stocks could be a hidden gem for investor portfolios in 2014. Over the past ten years, total returns for small stocks beat out the s p 500 by close to 40 . For more lets bring in the ceo of babson money and fox business charles payne. We have always talked about diversification. In a year, 2014, when we do not expect the big returns that we have last year, are smaller stocks a better bet for our viewers right now . I do not want they build a portfolio. Adding to that is diversification. For example last year they made 40 from micro tabs. There is a more important reason to use them. They have a very low correlation with large stocks. Not only do you have an additional 3 premium longterm, you have a great benefit of diversifying your portfolio. Cheryl charles, you are always coming on the show and we are doing stockpicking. What about stocks that are, say, cheap. Dollar amount. They have high beta. What would you make . What would you say about those names . Charles i always tell people, for the most part, most stocks over ten are overvalued in most stocks over 100 are undervalued. Something went terribly wrong there. If there was a stock that went public through a takeover, it is slowly but surely those are the names i would be more attracted to. You want to make sure that you understand that when you are taking this on. Cheryl it is a risky strategy. It could be considered gambling. Why not buy 100 shares of a name and take a little bit of risk. A risk nonetheless. Actually, i think investors need to actually be in over 12,000 stocks in over 45 countries. So, you know, if you are looking at cheryl i am not saying i just want to be clear. I would never tell anyone that. If you are looking at where the higher premiums are, those are stocks that have distress. They have been in problems. They have had problems with their company. The market prices those with the premium to reward companies. It is a capital story that was really fought and won a nobel prize for the strategy. Charles i had a couple winters like that. Calloway, the golf club company. That was a big winner for us. You have to be careful. I was looking at three names. These are names that were either pitched to me or friends. These are stocks that i could have bought in the last one or two years. They are all through the roof. Last night, my buddy tweeted me online. He gave me that stock at three dollars. It is 14 right now. You can really kick yourself on these things. At the end of the day, i do think to your point, it is okay to have exposure there. That is why you would have some of these in your portfolio. Cheryl lets talk about a percentage base. 5 of the portfolio . 10 if they aae younger in feeling a little, you know, adventures with money right now . With they think about their allocation, they need to think about a couple of things. One out of four years, they are up. That means only one out of four years they are down. If you are looking at the longterm and you will diversify your portfolio, most investors are too allocated to large you a stock. They can put ten, 20, 30 , even up to 40 . Not only increase their inspector returns, but decrease their volatility and do not forget about international. Last year, for example, greece was up 50 . No one would have expected that. Cheryl that is part of my strategy. Charles i feel like playing international. I can get their growth. A lot of those markets are skewed. The companies that are owned partly by the government, the government will not operate a business to make money. I am a little leery about it. I love the global idea. Cheryl 11. 6 . That is the best return over the last six years. Thank you very much. Very interesting. Appreciate it. Thank you, cheryl. Cheryl thank you very much. Winter weather nightmare is happening. A massive storm stretching about 1000 of the eastern part of the United States. Some areas seeing more than a foot of snow. As you can imagine, it is causing a huge headache for travelers. The bottleneck is beginning to clear out. Still thousands of delays between yesterday and today. The Airlines Hope they will get up and running in the next couple of days back to where they were before this storm. Cheryl follow the airlines on twitter. That is actually my advice. You would be shocked at how much information you get. Charles people also fight with the airlines on twitter. Dennis video chat. Did you do not have to fly anywhere. The u. S. Army thinking about replacing thousands of troops with robots. Cheryl it is actually gone in the air. The subzero temperatures are blanketing the midatlantic and the northeast. There are your major retailers right now. We will keep an eye on this set are for you today as we move forward to the trading day here on fox business. Lets head to the floor of the new york Stock Exchange. You are watching netflix. Nicole we are looking at netflix very closely. They will be coming out with their numbers. Sixteen cents versus a year ago. Subscriber growth is key. Stealing customers away from hbo and the like. Original programming. All kinds of awards from Golden Globes and the like. Right now the stock is at 331. 90. Over the last 52 weeks, you get a gauge over how this has grown. 236 in the last 52 weeks. That is unbelievable. We will be watching over the next 24 hours. Back to you. Cheryl Reed Hastings for president at this point. Talk about a turnaround story. Thank you, nicole. Dennis expected cuts to the nations Food Stamp Program. Facilities say they do not have enough staff or inventory to meet demand. Food stamp spending within 50 in the obama era. Almost 50 Million People now get them. A Coalition Says a 5 billion cut in 2009, in the Food Stamp Program led to a typical family of three and losing 29 a month. Enough for at least 23 meals. Cheryl we did that story. Speaking of food, we will stay on this team right now. Americans are needing more butter. As you notice, it is getting more expensive. Jeff flock has a story for us today. Dennis we have the latest up next. Cheryl of the snow has stopped falling. Parts of the midatlantic and northeast face that are cold temperatures and freezing wind. How is it looking . Cheryl, you are used to numbers. Here is a number that sums it up how it is looking. It is now 9 degrees here in red bank new jersey. The windchill feels like minus eight. The snow plow stopped here the light. You can see some heavy equipment here. They have been working throughout the night to try and clear the roads. All of the roads are now passable. We have some video recorded from a short time ago. It was a very rough 24 hours. Very slippery conditions still exist. There was one fatality in the northeast. We just got word from governor cuomos office. All roads are now open. The second major storm for the newly elected mayor. The mayor has been criticized for neighboring one neighborhood over another. He says it is not true. All efforts have been consistent. All for very roads been cleared. He had a News Conference just a short time ago. As of 9 00 a. M. This morning, there are more than 1800 pieces of snow removal equipment deployed across the city. That includes plows, salt spreaders and front end loaders. Personnel were also assigned to shovel crosswalks and bus stops. Sanitation crews will continue working on 12 hour shifts until snow removal is complete. Much of the snow has now been removed. It is still freezing cold outside. Hypothermia and frostbite still exist. If you go outside, make sure it is for a short time. Dress warm. Cheryl thank you, david. Dennis it sounds like a scene from the new remake of robocop. It is not Science Fiction. The u. S. Army replacing thousands of shoulders soldiers with robots. They will replace a lost truth with robots and remotecontrolled vehicles. The benefit is reducing the burden giving the army more killing power. I feel extremely manly. Cheryl call it a play on lingerie. Do i have your attention now . [laughter] cheryl we are talking about victorias secret. Dennis butter prices. Demand reaches a 40 year high. Jeff flock has the latest from one business looking to cash in on that big butter boom. Nicole petallides live on wall street caller minutes on the Fox Business Network. We are watching mixed markets on wall street and names to watch that affect some new highs. You will see some down arrows but some new 52 week highs, record all time highs, looking at amazon be, google, facebook, northrops other in, these names hit some sort today worth noting and we will keep an eye on some stocks to watch including coach which came out with some tough sales numbers, blackberry up 16 this week alone at the pentagon reveals apples carl icahn uping his investment and verizon, they have been asked by Law Enforcement for customer information over 300,000 customers and netflix coming up with their numbers after the bell. We have a lot to watch on wall street and worth noting that the nasdaq composite hit new record today. Cheryl time of the fox business stock radar. You have two stocks that have big potential in the coming months, got to start with abbott labs because they are in the news today. Big miss on the earnings, 40 hit to profits. Talk to me about that. And adjusted number that strips of the charges, it was not great. This will grow 10 year, we will do it in 14, spun off from the old abbott, abbott labs. And all sort of the emerging markets, best in their past, nothing particularly sexy about them but a management story about blocking and tackling. Cheryl i want to show the last year of the company, there has been activity towards the end of the year for abbott labs that you like to see, now you say buying opportunity. Last year was a strong market, anything that you have to take a second look at. There is a lot they can control, lot of margin potential. Cheryl the part you are focusing on, and you spot off. A big pharmaceutical company. Cheryl and retailers, one of your picks is Limited Brands and l a b is the ticker. And ltv. And it is down 10 , and unLimited Brands, it is pretty mediocre. The weather was lousy, it was heavily discounted, margins got hit, they reported earlier than most retailers. They have two cream category killer brands. Victorianas secret. If you buy a company like this you want to look at opportunities like this when for whatever reason they miss the court or the sector out of favor, that can happen over the next week reporters. Coming out of the recession all these retailers, 10 or 15 which nobody can sustain. We are in normalizing year. Cheryl i want to show to the viewers, a couple names that were in that space. And and chicos which is the same type of pattern, a little divergence in the middle of the year. Retail can be tough for the average investor. A lot of attention to detail, some management matters a lot. And the koreas secret has been around forever. They also have potential, globally to double the footprint even in the u. S. Today so not as much of a fashion bed. They are always done trend. Not as much as a brand new company. Cheryl i am showing our viewers other examples of companies that may have the proven record and a fateful consumer because as a shopper it is a big thing. Appreciate it. Dennis u. S. Butter consumption at the highest level in 40 years. North americans packing the on the pounds, butter prices soaring, jeff flock live from grassland in greenewood, wisconsin, the center of butter production with the latest on this boom. Jeff you are looking at a chair in that churned out 10,000 pounds of butter every hour here. 20 of the nations butter comes from central wisconsin. Greatgrandfather started this business, look at the chart on butter consumption. It just keeps growing. Jeff we have seen in the last years that people are going to all natural products. People are looking at the ingredient statement on their food, when you see cream, i want to shows some what they are eating. And as we do, want to look at it . That is the unsalted butter coming out of the churn, freshly churned unsalted butter. I wish you could get the smell. It is a beautiful smell. Pretty neat. Take a look at the packaging as we do futures with prices that have gone skyrocketing. But that the february futures for butter and milk both. What is the reason for that . Demand. World demand is up. Not only are americans wanting more butter, so as the rest of the world. You have a drought in california which is a huge dairy state. No drought here in wisconsin. Several weeks depreciated, and costco stuff, and cost those supplied target and walmart. We own 100 different labels. Thanks, trevor. Bader. Thanks very much, jeff flock. Cheryl the world Economic Forum is underway where some of the most influential business and political leaders are meeting. Liz claman spoke to michael freeze and ask the head of Liberty Global what he thinks is the next Important Development in the cable world. The average cable home today has an antiquated guide. If we look at what we have done with verizon and what comcast has done with x 1 my kids dont bother with netflix or apple, the guide has become Something Like 3d graphics, recommendation engines, cool navigation. Getting that functionality right to me is a game set match. Cheryl 3,000 vips in global government are descending on the Alpine Village of davos, switzerland and all want what most i not going to get, a big fairly priced hotel room. Liz claman with the man who did make all happen. It is a totally different continent. Marriott is among the best at building big modern hotels but ceo Arne Sorenson really has his mind on a totally different continents. We welcome him to the fox business area, thanks for being here. You made a big announcement that you are making a large acquisition. We have sitting here today we have no hotels open in Subsaharan Africa but we announced this morning the definitive acquisition of the largest Subsaharan African chain so we will immediately become a very significant presence in our industry. Cheryl can i put you on the investment . 186 million at this mornings exchange rate. It moves a little bit. When we first approved the deal internally we thought would be 200 million. We wont fund until the end of march. We will see what it looks like then. It runs there is no real Deal Associated with it. Cheryl where does the ceo of marriott stay here . I have been here three years and stayed in three different places. We dont have one of our own hotels here. Liz in the years since we were together what has changed for your focus for marriott that is different from 2013 and you look forward to 2014 . The confidence in the recovery is better. If you think about a year or two ago in the United States, the economy felt like it was moving and growing but we really didnt have much confidence in that and as we sit here today we feel more confident about its continuing in the United States. Part of that may be political process is off to a better start in 2014 than it was in 2013. Over a year ago we came off of that fiscal mess at the end of the year. It was devastating as if the government was trying to tempt the economy to go back into a recession. Fortunately it didnt but if you look at the rest of the world and it is mostly the same. The attitude may be more pessimistic from some markets. China seems more modest in its gross to date than it did your ago. We still see the rest of the world as providing above average growth for many years to come. Liz when we stand here in davos people talk about income inequality, global youth unemployment, i dont hear a lot of people talking about aside from the fact that theres a conference going on in switzerland for the syrian talks about of people are not talking about that nation but what at the forefront of headlines in International News keeps you up at night little bit . I was on a panel here focused on global Employment Trends and what is happening. The economist has a huge profile on technology and how that is a disruptive to employment. You have obviously got all the questions about significant high unemployment in the United States and the rest of the developed world and questions about training and building of the work force in the rest of the world and the use demographics in india. Employment is a big issue. Liz i have never seen it and the numbers have never been this bad for global youth unemployment. What are we doing wrong . What are all governments and businesses doing wrong . We have got to be focused on education and training. It probably has to start as early as it possibly can in different markets around the world. The challenge is different from place to place. We up in a hotel in rwanda and are working with the school could last year. A job at a hotel is a Lottery Ticket for those women. I got regular employment, my family can rely on income. I can see a future and a career. You go to the United States and you have a different perspective. Increasingly you get the immigration debate as an example, voices that come out and say we should not deal with the undocumented in the United States, you have high unemployment. Those people are going to leave the United States . I dont think so, so the issues vary from place to place. Somehow we have to find ways through training, through Legal Systems to make sure that people are permitted to pursue the opportunities available to them. Liz great to see you, Arne Sorenson, the ceo of marriott. Back to fox business in the studios. Cheryl coming up in the next hour liz will sit down with the chairman and ceo of libra group. You dont want to miss that interview. Dennis the storm is over but natural gas is heading higher. More from phil flynn and the trading pits of the cme. This is a big break out for natural gas. Alatas traders say we could go a lot further. That probably means a lot more cold temperatures to go. The other market traders are focusing on of course is the grain market. The massive drop in soybeans yesterday. We have seen wheat prices going to back up. The cold weather could be impacting the wheat and south america weather driving down the beans. Dennis thanks very much, phil flynn. Cheryl time for your westcoast minute.
