Lou what do you make of this mad exchange, if you will, started by ted cruz, at least by extension because the antitrump pact promoted a photo of melania, his wife . I think both sides here are at fault, lou. Initially cruz could have come out really strong and said i condemn this, this shouldnt be done. He kind of did after some time, but and i know he says he doesnt control the pac, thats probably the case. An antitrump pac. What youve seen the vitriol between both cruz and trump over the last several weeks has helped one person. Its helped Hillary Clinton. Ive said for some time now that trump and cruz have to figure out a way to work together. I know all these people out there in washington and new york feel better when they use their hashtag never trump, and some of the trump people feel better when they say ted cruz, forget it, lying ted. The establishment in the republican and the Democrat Party are clear on one thing, they do not want someone who is more populist to get into power. They dont want trade deals renegotiated. Dont want immigration policy that lets in 1. 7 legal immigrants every year. 200,000 or so happen to be from muslim countries. They dont want us to move in any way to deport people who are here legally. They want to die on the hills. If it means Hillary Clinton has to be president for four years, there are a lot of people in the establishment, lou, who are fine with that. Not what they necessarily wanted but if it means stopping donald trump and theyre okay with it. Lou it wont be on the hills, it will be the fancier penthouse and condominiums across the country. Gloriously revelling in the 1 hood. Theyre going to have great landscaping, the landscaping will be perfect and the silver will be polished. The reality that it seems were confronting here now is something that is such a new image for all of us, a new vision, a new experience. We havent seen the likes of donald trump ever, even those of us who have known him for a long time in new york city, or florida, wherever it might be. This is a man who is rewriting every possible chapter of the how do i get to be president book, and youre watching paul ryan. Hes playing some sort of role that i dont recognize, im not acquainted with it in the literature where he stands as the arbiter of moral conscience. At the same time. He manipulates the levers of political power from capitol hill to soon the Gop Convention, and then all the while whispers about his own ambitions. We are watching mitt romney show more energy than he did in his entire term as governor of massachusetts or candidate for the president of the United States in 2012 lou, a couple of things, number one, trump has a lot of work to do, right . Cant be sending out tweets about women or id lose the whole lying ted thing, id lose all of that. If i were advising donald trump, i would say go right into general election mode. Take the fight to the establishment. Lou he did he pivoted for maybe 15 or 20 minutes. I get that. But what he needs to do now, he has his people. He needs to get some of cruzs people on his side. Got reassure them hes going to do conservative things, not just talking the conservative game or the populist game, hes going to do it and reassure the establishment folks hes going to be really good for business. Hes got to get specific. Got to get more people in the movement. I know hes picked up more states. If he doesnt, he will not become president. And the same thing with ted cruz. Cruz has got, to at some point, if he doesnt beat him in more states and by significant margins, cruz has a decision to make. He can either feel like hes morally pure and ideologically pure and stamp his feet and say no way, never trump, never helping him or the two of them can figure something out. People watching say that will never happen. Other alliances in history have happened. Bad blood has been spilled before between two candidates and theyve come together. I think that could happen again. But the egos have got to be checked. The country put first period. Thats what has to happen. Lou laura, youre not only one of my very favorite talk show hosts. Back at you you are certainly among the very brightest, and as i listen to you struggle to bring these two candidates into line and to conform to a shape and a direction that you and i suspect millions of others of americans would like to see. Theyre defying convention, and you know what else is happening here . Theyre actually talking about issues despite all of the tawdry nonsense, theyre talking about important. Were not talking about the issues today. Lets take a day off. I love the daylight. I love the heat that sometimes accompanies that. Yeah. Remember when the establishment was calling ted cruz whacko bird, john mccain, Lindsey Graham called us the loud folks, all went after talk room. They khalis nativists, protection efforts, isolationists, thats what george w. Bush called people who believe in border enforcement and better trade deals. Always voting down the tea party folks, and john boehner would ridicule them. Lou those were the days. Now all of a sudden, lets be like jack kemp. Rubio is out and jeb is out, they lose in home states. Lindsey graham was at negative percent in his own state. I dont know how you can be. That they dont represent anyone in the Republican Party and wagging their finger at us, last time i checked paul ryan didnt deliver wisconsin for mitt romney. I like paul ryan but lost wisconsin by 7 points. And losing most of the rest of the country because he pretends to neutrality that doesnt exist. He pretends to be faint of heart, if you raise your voice or the language is a little coarse. The interpretation for the viewers, that means when populism or conservatism or reaganism is wing, the tone has got to be changed. Lou absolutely. You couldnt be more correct and, of course, i know that you and i are both so sensitive that we require a lot of our feelings get hurt easily. Youre a fuzz ball and i am too. Have a little bit of selfrestraint. Ted cruz is like any other politician, says whatever he needs to say to get elected. Ted cruz is not my favorite by any means. Lou if you do not love this president ial primary season, you are incapable of love for anything vaguely political. Senator ted cruz not at a loss for words himself as he counterattacks the counterattacks of donald trump against his attacks, except it seems he cant find his own words. And we are following this closely. Today cruz called trump a, quote, and i thought this was rather imaginative, sniveling coward. It took me back to black and white cowboy movies. It is a direct quote from the kids animated Television Show he man and the masters of the universe. It was also, and this is one of my personal favorites, in the 1951 bob hope film, my favorite spy. One of the best ever. I dont know, maybe ted cruz like me likes old movies. He gets material there. Cruz stole a line from another movie too recent for my taste, the american president. When attacking trump. Take a look please. If donald wants to get in a character fight, hes better off sticking with me, because heidi is way out of his league. Look, when theyre arguing over their wives, i wouldnt call that high toned. It was the super pac supporting him, whether he likes it or not, thats a part of his campaign, and so the cruz people started it, now trump has fired back and theyre arguing. Look, this is not high toned. Id rather have them discuss tax reform, but a lot of people have lou god save us from tax reform. Lot of people have reacted the same way you have. They love this argument. I feel badly for both candidates and their wives. Theyll survive. Lou but i have to say, the reality is, it seems to me, goes to the fact that the candidates themselves are passionate about what theyre talking about. We havent seen this on the campaign trail in my experience. Not since, and then it was only flashes when reagan was running for president in 1980, and that, as i say, only flashes of it. What were watching now is passionate determination to win, and i got to say, its great to watch, and i wonder what is going to happen as we move at some point to the nomination process, we find out whos going to win. I presume it will be trump, given his lead, and then ultimately with, again, i assume Hillary Clinton. What do you think . I think its all a safe assumption, looks like trump is already looking ahead to having won the nomination, and planning what he wants to do to the extent he plans beyond a single day, in the general election against Hillary Clinton. He met with conservative groups in washington this week. Ones that dont endorse candidates, but ones that will help him broaden the base. And his base of supporters, and once he wins the nomination, assuming he does, he gave a really extraordinary speech to aipac, the proisrael group using a teleprompter and doesnt like teleprompter and asked people to give him a list of potential conservative Supreme Court nominees. Another outreach to conservative groups. Hes moving to enlarge his base already, and thats what Laura Ingraham, thats what she was urging him to do. And i think he started it. Lou and it is i thought the aipac presentation, people were sort of saying wait a minute, this is terrible, its going to be a horrible moment for donald trump. He mastered the moment. And i have to say i was thinking as you were talking, there is one other element here about donald trump people are not giving him credit for. Hes the only truly amongst the candidates or the rest are career politicians, hes also the only one who isnt a lawyer against presuming that it is hillary, presuming that the final opponent will be ted cruz. Hes the only nonlawyer. Thats sort of exhilarating to me. Yeah, well that was one of the things that helped ronald reagan. He wasnt a lawyer either, and look, it shows with cruz that hes not a rather with trump that hes not a lawyer. If he were a lawyer, he wouldnt be saying some of the things he says for sure. Lou yeah. Kasich is a remarkable nonfactor in this race whose feelings seem to be hurt if anyone reminds him, he is in actuality in fourth place, not third place, in number of delegates. Marco rubio, whos no longer in the race, has more delegates than kasich, and it is he who is in third place. Frustration is building with kasichs role as obvious spoiler, and with republican elites who are telling the grassroots theyll make all the decisions for everybody at the convention. A new fox news poll shows they dont like that idea out there in the grassroots. Rank and file, you know, us mere mortals. Poll shows 59 of republicans believe the nominee should be the candidate with the most delegates. Even if the candidate doesnt quite reach 1237. Of course, that socalled open convention that suddenly the elites are talking about would be first in the hands of the rnc rules committees and dont forget presiding over all of it, Speaker Paul Ryan who says hes mr. Neutral. Hell be presiding over the convention as he presumes to be neutral and presumes to criticize the field of coarsened and callous candidates who dont rise to his lofty standards and hes thinking of a particular candidate in particular. Nasty stuff, potentially mortal blows to the gop as a result. As the speaker did note, we should be demanding far better, andsa the fox survey shows, almost 60 of Republican Voters are demanding better of the elites who continue to presume far too much, and continue to think far too little of the partys rank and file. Lou i want to turn to a federal case, the charges against seven iranians for coordinated cyberattacks, i would call that terrorism. The Justice Department calls it criminal in their charges against them. They are seven iranians who are in iran and the actions that they carried out in cyberattacks against infrastructure were years ago. What is going on here . Now its meant to be symbolic. Symbolic . Were trying to scare you. Theyre not going to be extradited. No damages seen to the country. Lou why would the Justice Department waste its time . Wait a minute. I think, in my opinion, why cant we sit down diplomatically and say, hey, look what you did. They work for your government. Why dont we sit down diplomatically. Lou are you kidding me . Putin would like to have a political transition that guaranteed assad staying in power. Thats the only transition that hes interested in, and if he can get a ceasefire based on that predicate, he would take it. Its not going to happen because the Opposition Forces never tolerate assad staying in power. Kerrys been chasing fools gold here for sometime. On the isis and palmyra, the fact is the Syrian Regime assisted by russian and syrian air power will likely take palmyra. They cant go beyond that, they dont have sufficient combat forces to take back the rest of syria. Lou i want to turn now, talking about the Islamic State, to the attacks in brussels, and significantly brussels, the home of nato and two months ago donald trump, actually called out what were witnessing, talking about the multiculturalism. The pockets of europe that are no longer europe, and the hate of the radical islamists within those communities and that boiled overtude. Your thoughts about the nato statement and the thought of restructuring nato to a new purpose . Just dealing with nato and not with mr. Trump, natos been decisive. It helped win the cold war for us, it was a contributor standing up against the warsaw pact and having an incredible political and military alliance, theyve assisted us with iraq, afghanistan and also with libya. You can argue the merits of those to be sure. But here, nato is vital now more than ever because russian aggression and assertiveness and clearly have eyes on the Baltic States and europe. Without nato russia would roll right in there. Nato has challenges, and certainly not putting up enough investment in their own defenses. A lot of the leaders are feckless and its doubtful whether they would stand up. Well theyre feckless and not only raising defense budgets, theyre lowering them, and seems to me that those, and well leave the candidates out, but those who say that the United States is carrying far too much of the burden and strategically is far too forward on initiatives in europe against the aggression of russia without at least commensurate force and urgency on the part of european states. It is a peculiar position to which we find ourselves, is it not . Yeah, no doubt about it. Never would be a nato without american leadership. There wouldnt be a nato without american resources, and this has been true for 60 something years. The thing in front of us which is pretty alarming, isis declared war against europe, the United States, australia and canada, and clearly directly waging war in europe. That is the primary objective and nato is sitting on their hands. They have no plan to destroy isis. No commitment of resources across the United States as part of nato and we dont have plans either. It is staggering that they are not doing anything offensive other than what the police are doing which is largely defensive. Lou it appears their strategy, general, as we wrap up here, i have to leave it with this, the european strategy is to leave borders wide open and for Angela Merkel to invite in as many refugees and immigrants as possible from muslim countries.
