Presumably lots of it. President obama attended to highpriced fundraisers this evening, spending last night in colorado. We are turning to the president now. President obama i would like to address the humanitarian situation on the border. I want to thank everyone who has been involved in taking the time to talk to me. And its important to recognize two things. First, the surge of unaccompanied children and adults with children arriving at once after, the real Rio Grande Valley. We are apprehending people at large numbers. We are working to make sure that we have sufficient facilities to detain, house, and process them appropriately. While attending to unaccompanied children with the care and compassion that they deserve while they are in our custody. We intend to do the right thing by these children. Their parents need to know that this is an incredibly dangerous situation, and it is unlikely that their children will be able to stay. I rest parents not to put their children in harms way in this fashion. So right now there are more Border Patrol agents and surveillance resources on the ground that it me time in our history and we deport almost 4000 migrants each year. As soon as it became clear that this years migration to the order was different than in past years, i directed ive directed fema to coordinate our response at the border and members of my staff have made multiple trips to facilities they are. We are also addressing the root of the problem. Vice president biden, secretary john kerry, and others are meeting with Central American leaders. As well as working with our International Partners to gropper smugglers for putting kids lives at risk. Earlier this week, mexico announced a series of steps that they are going to take of their southern border to help stem the tide of these unaccompanied children. Until last week i sent a letter to Congress Asking them to increase penalties and give us flexibility to move the migrants through the system faster. Yesterday i asked congress to fund these efforts. About half of the resources would go to Border Security enforcement and extradited people who dont qualify for humanitarian claim. About half ago to make sure that we are treating children humanely and further tackle the real problems in Central America. And so right now congress has the capacity to work with us and work with faithbased groups and notforprofit to helping to care for these kids and the ability to work with all parties concerned to directly address this situation. Instead they want to see a solution and the supplemental offers them the capacity to vote immediately to get it done. Of course, in the long run the best way to address this is what the house of representatives to pass legislation fixing our broken immigration system, which includes funding for additional thousands of Border Patrol agents and something that everybody down here indicates is a priority. This bill is built more than a year ago it would have strengthened this with additional Border Patrol agents and strengthen the backlogged immigration courts and put us in a stronger position to deal with the surge and prevent it. And so let me just close by indicating the nature of the conversation that i had with governor rick perry, which i thought was constructive area governor rick perry suggested for specific areas of concern. Including how many patrol agents were directly at the border and he was concerned that some of the Border Patrol agents too far from the order to beat effective in deterring folks from coming in as opposed to simply apprehending him. And i indicated to him that what he said sounded like it made sense. And if we pass this supplemental he would have the resources to carry out some of the very things that he is requesting. On a broader policy level he indicated concern right now kids who come to the border from mexico are immediately deported, but because its noncontiguous, people are coming from Central America and they have to go through a lengthy process. I indicated that part of what we are looking at is flexibility in term of being able to preserve and make sure that they cant simply automatically assume that they will be absorbed. This includes how the immigration judicial system works and how the administrative processing works and how long it takes, and that people essentially are released with a court date that might be six months out or nine months out and a lot of them dont show up. I indicated to him that if we had more administrative judges and capacities, we could shrink those weeks times. And so this administrative practice predates my administration and has been going on for quite some time and a lot of it has to do with the fact that theres not enough capacity in terms of facilities and also judges, attorneys and space, in order to process the things more quickly and expeditiously. The bottom line is actually that there is nothing but the governor indicated that he would like to see and that i have a philosophical objection and i asked jay johnson at the head of health and Human Services when he comes out for the sixth time at the end of this week to coordinate and make sure that some of the suggestions that the governor has are technically feasible and what kind of resources may be needed. What i emphasized the problem is not major disagreement around the actions that could be helpful in dealing with the problem, but the problem is, is congress prepared to act for the resources in place to get this done . Its another way of putting it in our folks more interested in politics are solving problems . If they are interested in solving the problem, then this can be solved. If the preference is for politics, it will not be solved. I urge the governor to talk to the texas delegation, which is obviously the heart of the Republican Caucus and has great influence in the caucus in the senate. So it does not include some things that i know many object to, including dealing with undocumented workers who have been here for quite some time. And this is just a very narrow supplemental issue and if the texas delegation is here to move, we can have more Border Patrol agents on the border of the governors requests and we can shorten the timetables for processing these children or adults with children, as the governor thinks is important. We can make sure that some of the Public Health issues that are raised in the meeting that i just had our address so that we have enough folks checking on Health Statuses of these children to make sure that not only are they based, but that our communities are safe. So the things of the governor thinks are important to do would be a lot easier if we had the resources to do them. The only question at this point is why would not the texas delegation or any other republicans who are concerned not want to put this on a fast track and get it on my desk to sign and we can get it to work. So i suggest some influence over the delegation that might be helpful and i call upon us right away. A final point is i just want to thank some of the faithbased groups that i just met with as well as the mayors and commissioners and local officials and it has been incredibly passionate and looking at facilities in which we can accommodate some children. And as i indicated in hearing the stories of the churches that are repaired not to just make donations would send volunteers to help construct, as well as their willingness to volunteer care and assistance to these children and i told him thank you. Because it confirmed what we all know, which is the American People are an incredibly compassionate people. When we see a child, weto care r them. But what i think we all agree upon is the best thing we can do is to make sure that the children are able to live in their own countries. And that is why it is important we solve this shortterm problem here and for us to be able to a direct attention and resources and assistance as we are doing, but not at a sustained in high enough level. Back in honduras and guatemala, honduras and other places like guatemala, parents dont think that somehow it is safer for their children to send none thousands of miles away so they dont get harmed. So with that, i will take a couple of questions. [inaudible question] can you explain why you get into bed and do you see a legitimate reason. Cecere stage three he has visited the border three times. He comes back and reports to me extensively and everything that is taking place. And so there is nothing taking place down or that i am not intimately aware of and preached upon. This is not theater. This is a problem. I am not interested in photo ops, but in solving the problem. Those who say that i should visit the border, when you ask them what we should be doing, they are giving us suggestions that are embodied in legislation that i heard he sent to congress. So it is not as if they are making success content suggestions that we are not listening to. In fact, the suggestions of those who work at the border and who visit the border are incorporating legislation that we are already repaired to sign the minute it hits my desk. It is a very simple question and that is Congress Just needs to pass this supplemental. There is a larger issue that involves a lot of politics, which includes why are we not passing comprehensive Immigration Reform, which would put an additional 20,000 Border Patrol agents on the ground and give us a lot of additional authorities to deal with this and that shouldve been done a year or two ago. But we have got it caught up in politics and i understand that. And so one of the suggestions that i had is that it would be useful for my republican friends to rediscover the concept of negotiation and compromise. The number one concern that the governor mentioned was setting aside the supplemental and i should go ahead and authorize that surge of the border right away. And i told him that we are having to consider how we could deploy a National Guard down there and that is a temporary solution and not a permanent solution. So why would we not go ahead and pass a longerterm solution . And if the texas delegation said for us to pass the supplemental, we want to have this and we have to consider it. So this should not be hard to get this supplemental done. The question is are we more interested in politics or solving the problem . If we are interested in solving the problem, there is actually broad consensus around a number of the issues and there may be issues between democrats and republicans and some of the policy issues, but on a bunch of the stuff there is pretty good consensus, so lets just get that done. [inaudible question] it sounds like you are concerned that the supplemental will fall prey to partisan politics. President obama i think that happens a lot of times. And i had sponsored a bill, it might fall victim to partisan politics. But on the other hand this is an issue in which my republican friends have said it is urgent and we need to ask it. And so if that is the case, lets go ahead and fix it. Governor perry suggested that maybe we just need to go ahead and act and that might convince republicans that they should go ahead and pass the supplemental. I had to remind him that i am getting sued currently by mr. John boehner for going ahead and acting instead of one through congress. Well, here is a good case. Heres something that you say is important as i do. This is an area that you have prioritized, as i have. And so dont wait for me to take executive action we have the capacity right now to get something done. I will sign up till tomorrow. We will go ahead and do what we can administratively. This gives it the tools to do the many things and at the same time i will just repeat that we got a comprehensive bill done, it doesnt just solve this problem for a year, but potentially for 20 years. And i would urge those who so far have failed to act on a comprehensive to take another look at it. But i didnt get any promises, but it was a constructive conversation and i have asked jay johnson to take a look at it. So we need to take a look at how we can use this more effectively, the resources. So i think it is important that we have a strong collaboration on the issue. Sumac governor rick perry put out a statement. [inaudible question] ds. [inaudible question] president obama i am interested in securing the border. As far as i can tell, the only disagreement i have is that he wanted me to do it without congress having to do anything. We will do what we can administratively. So questions not covered for the governor but for john boehner and Mitch Mcconnell and other members of the texas delegation, why will you not give us Additional Resources to solve this problem. It is an imitation [inaudible] in these little children [inaudible] president obama if you look at the pattern of immigration into our country, we are actually at a significantly lower level than we were when i took office. I think the challenge that we have had that has caused a spike has caused a significant security challenge in the Central American countries themselves than the fact that you have smugglers who are increasingly recognizing they can make money by transporting these folks in very dangerous circumstances and taking advantage of the American People. Recognizing that we are not going to simply leave abandoned children who are left at our doorstep, but that we have to care for them and provide them basic safety and security, while we determine this further. So one of the most important things we can recognize is that this is not a shortterm problem but a longterm problem. We have countries that are close to us in which the life chances of children are far, far worse than they are here area and parents who are frightened for our misinformed about what is possible willing to take extraordinary risks on behalf of their kids. The more that we can do to help these countries get their acts together, the less likely we are to have a problem at the borders. And the fact of the matter is the comprehensive Immigration Reform generally allows us to reallocate resources because of the budget that dhs, instead of a chasing after families that may have lived here for five or 10 years, and they are law abiding savior for save for the fact that they didnt come here legally. If they have to earn their citizenship, paying taxes, learning english, paying a fine, going to the back of the line. But they are no longer an enforcement priority. That suddenly freaked out frees up a huge amount of resources and so i thank you, everyone, i appreciate it. Lou president obama talking about what he called a humanitarian crisis. As well as mentioning the local faith areas with with which he met, about 22 minutes. He obviously extended his remarks. Listening throughout and joining us now is congressman bob goodlatte. He has been instrumental in laying the foundation for leadership and the judiciary passing these bills. Good to have you with us. What is your reaction to the president s call, through an expeditious passage requesting 3. 7 billion and competence of Immigration Reform once again. First of all, i am glad that he met with governor rick perry. My committee was instrumental in making available to rick perry some of the ideas he shared with the president. But i also want to have your viewers step back and think about what he has talked about. 3. 7 billion and ultimately the senate bill and it would cause a massive surge of the borders as peoplesoft a special pathway to citizenship, that they would want to be next. So there are many things that the president can do right now. And his actions with dock these claims, and doing other things that he could be doing right now to fix this problem, those things have sent the message and cause a problem. So yes, they should be prepared to do a targeted and narrow appropriation supplemental on a temporary basis to address this to the 2008 law. There are many things they could do right now that could solve the problem that he created by his actions hes taking to discipline. Lou on like the president you have been in more than double what we had a decade ago. But it remains the ease with which we describe these individuals, drug smugglers, even terrorists, could enter this country . That is absolutely correct. There are measures that he could take and tweaks that could be taken to make sure that these wouldnt be offlimits to our Border Patrol agents who are doing a great job when they are able to spend their time on the border and the fact of the matter is that the president should go to the border and not to send other people to be there perhaps he should go to mexico and Central America to impress upon those governments just how much they need to participate this. Lou where is the president getting some of his information . He says the only place these children are showing up is Rio Grande Valley in texas. I would like to show our audience where they flood the United States order in texas, up by by the largest amount, 170 , big ben also in texas and el paso. As well as arizona, the yuma sector is up 39 in california, san diego and del centro up by spiraling percentages, 59 and 41 . So he said one sector. Who in the world told holder . There is no doubts about one sector is getting the greatest pressure. That this is a problem that is occurring all across the border because the fact that the word has gotten out that this president is not enforcing our Immigration Laws, but also families and almost as large a number as the unaccompanied minors. So they will keep on coming. The Border Patrol agents are the best he would ask how to stop this. They should ask the guys on the line and they will tell them that a deterrent is the only way to stop this from happening. They need to make sure that the children, when they come, that the parents are investigated for fraud. 70 of political asylum claims have suspicion of fraud involved. But they rubberstamp the overwhelming majority of the cases. If you could be done without him violating his oath of office, he is the chief executive of the United States and has lost under his guidance right now that he could enforce but that should not be an excuse to do what hes doing right now. Lou far more than an excuse, this president , as i listened to him and i want to hear your interpretation, said that he wont do the right thing. He wont solve the problem. He will not establish for security, he will not enforce Immigration Laws, because he is holding hostage comprehensive Immigration Reform and used this expression over and over but if youre more interested in solving the problem then you are politics, that you will do the right thing. So he then proceeded not to suggest that was going to protect our borders to establish a secure order and return Illegal Immigrants from their original countries. I think, again if the president took a tough stand, that would be a strong first step that would stop the flow coming and began the process of making sure that the children are sent home to their native countries. And not, by the way, what they are doing right now, which is reuniting them with parents who let their children in these countries sometimes weeks and months ago to come to the United States illegally and then pay 4000 to 12,000 for human trafficker, a coyote, a smuggler, to bring them through where they kill people, many young girls are raped, we have a problem with them being diverted into sex trafficking and being injured, bring diseases and the country as well. And yet the response today is we will reunite them with those parents and they had done Something Like that, subjecting their children to that, they get a visit from social services and have a risk of their parental rights terminated. Lou i think we need to be candid as well. Many acting as custom vans are claiming their parents or relatives, there are not adequate resources and all of Customs Enforcement to actually check out these people are and what the risks are of the family environment or the environment in which to Young Children are now living. And so its a firstclass match and it is a government that has simply broken down under this administration, in my opinion. I agree with you. And i think that we are reaping a tsunami of order because of this policy. Because of an Administration Made disaster, he needs to leave and yes, Congress Needs to give targeted funding where they are going to be used to stop the problem and the deterrence. Congress needs to tweak the law to make sure the Border Patrol can fully do the deterrence needed. But there is much that he can do right now that he is not doing. Sue on commerce and bob goodlatte, thank you so much. We are coming right back. Please stay with us. Israel under siege. Rockets hitting israel and israel is hitting back. We have a special guest joining us next from tel aviv. Lou Israeli Forces are intensifying their attacks on gaza after rockets from the hamasrun territorys randy. All israelis are legitimate targets. More than 300 rockets have been fired over the past 48 hours. 200 of those rockets has landed in israel. For more on this situation we are joined now by former israeli ambassador to the United States. He is live tonight from tel aviv mr. Ambassador, it is good to see you. Thank you. This is stunning, the intensity of the exchange between the rocket barrage in the israeli strikes. This seems utterly different than the most recent the array of conflicts in between hamas and israel. Absolutely. I think all of us were surprised by the arsenal that hamas has been able to amass and smuggled illegally to the gaza strip. Long range that covers. Most of the population of israel , this reign of terror. Theyre trying to be more accurate and also trying some diversion tactics. They have grown into an enormous Terrorism Organization which has actually very, very significant military capabilities with trying to infiltrate and continue with terror. If you think about the fact that since we left does almost nine years ago, in the attempt to make peace with the palestinians , but since we left more than 15,000 rockets landed on israeli. This is more than three times what london received in the blitz of the germans in world war ii peace treaty get some perspective. Lou in that think the question has to be asked to commit to what degree can israel afford to constrain itself in response . And a stand the need to carry out surgical strikes, but to defend israel, you are in quite a different situation. This is this has the appearance of something that could escalate rather rapidly. The Prime Minister has received from the Parliament Approval for 40,000 troops to be dispatched a a. Where are we headed . Yes. Well, all options are on the table, although there is no appetite in israel for a ground invasion. We will have been warriors, but if the area strikes and will be insufficient and if the loss will continue with starting our population we may have no choice. Doing aerial attacks. We are very careful whom not to hurt. For that purpose we are degrading ammunitions. Mostly we are very deliberate. We know some of the arsenals that hamas is hiring putting in schools or hospitals. These we are not targeting. If we have no choice we will have to go. Decisions have not been made. We are waiting for the next 24 hours. Lou the psychological atmosphere in israel is somewhat different than in previous. In that we have saw a president obama oped in which he effectively praise the president but did not mention Prime Minister netanyahu. We heard from pension a white house official, Administration Official talking about intimating that israel must seize the moment. He has shown himself to be a man of peace. These are strong signals emanating from administration, particularly at a moment of conflict like this. Of course we very much appreciate the United States attempts for peace and certainly the recent hints of washington. This is something which is very important. At the same time i think it was a little bit awkward timing. This article. Yesterday, most of israel is in shelters and hamas continues to fire. We have to remember, this hamas is now part of the government. You cannot split the you cannot split the responsibility many of my patients still clean their dentures with toothpaste. But they have to use special care in keeping the denture clean. Dentures are very different to real teeth. Theyre about 10 times softer and may have surface pores where bacteria can multiply. Polident is designed to clean dentures daily. Its unique microclean formula kills 99. 99 of odor causing bacteria and helps dissolve stains, cleaning in a better way than brushing with toothpaste. Thats why i recommend using polident. [ male announcer ] polident. Cleaner, fresher, brighter every day. Lou joining us now, congresswoman kendis miller, a member of the Homeland Security committee. It is good to have you with us. The president s remarks today sounded as though we wanted to hold his duties to secure the border, to enforce Immigration Law hostage to the passage of the supplemental, direction of a gang of eight senate comprehensive Immigration Reform legislation. Your thoughts . My thoughts, and i listened to most of what the president said. He was quick to blame the House Republicans to my thought, for not being able to do what needed to be done. Actually, the president had the tools available. If we need to do something about the border, as suggested he could call the National Guard. The governor asked about that tonight. He should be thinking about stopping foreign aid to that three central countries that are responsible for sending these pour in as an unaccompanied children. He should be thinking about at least reopening nafta, the north American Free trade agreement. I guarantee you if he even talked about the for a moment the Mexican Border would be closed tomorrow morning. As well i mean, you have to get at the root of this. The root problem in all lot of this is because of his policies. This is not so much and its a policy driven issue because of his policy. Sort of the lone wolf with the deferred action against children all of these folks think if they send their children to the United States there will be able stay here. Lou the president actually said it was an intriguing idea. He was intrigued by governor perry suggestion of the Border Patrol, i found that an utterly stunning remarque whether president. Wade is he think the Border Patrol should be positioned and while world is he aware of the complaints of literally thousands of Border Patrol agents that they have been pulled away to desk jobs, pulled away from the borde rather than enforce Border Security. It. It is absolutely stunning for the president to say that. He wont even go to the border. Perhaps if he would go down to the border and take a look at exactly what was happening, talk to the men and women on the ground, talk to the folks in the field, the ones dealing with these crises, he will quickly see where they are and he will soon see that the and the Company Children that are coming across the border through the rio grande and southern texas are not running away from our Border Patrol agents but running into their arms. Here we are. He told us if we came here 55 president obama said if we came here we can stay here. Totally overwhelmed, doing everything they can to handle this humanitarian crisis. By the way, pretty much leaving free rein for the drug cartel coming across the border as well because our cb p agents are so overwhelmed with the whole thing. I would ask the president to go to the border, take a look. He will quickly see what is happening. Hopefully will change his policy and have an aggressive publicrelations campaign in the essential right now telling them not to send their children here. Another thing that i think he could do if you really want to get, turn off the spigot for remittances. That is about 20 percent of the economys in these free central countries. About 20 percent of the money is coming from many illegals that are here in the United States that i sending remittances down every month. They, in turn, are paying the coyotes to smuggle their children appear. It is like money laundering. Shut that down. Lou congresswoman kendis miller thank you for being with us. Thank you so much. Lou thank you. His 101st day in prison in mexico, Andrew Tahmooressi was in the courthouse in tijuana. Lou well, of your comments now on our president and his remarks at the beginning of this prompted a broadcast from taxes on the crisis on our southern border. Tonight president obama seems to be a man lost in texas caught between the politically privileged who are throwing she can those of elite fundraisers in both dallas and boston. Down on the border the tens of thousands of the illegal immigrant children are creating the humanitarian crisis that the president spoke of but whom he refuses to actually see and talk with. Because the president might also have to take notice of the millions of his own citizens whose lives are being attended by the influx of the Illegal Immigrants. President obama is caught as well between his still so true believers and ever bursting cooler drinkers and the rising number of his critics and detractors. His gambit to politically exploit tens of thousands of illegal immigrant children on the issue of illegal immigration and comprehensive Immigration Reform has turned into a Public Relations and human relations disaster for this white house. It must have seemed so smart, so elegant the plan so many months ago when the amnesty act constructed their rooms. Above the law of unintended consequences has turned out to be a barrier to mr. Obamas ambition to fundamentally transform this nation. A barrier both surprising to him and stubborn. As a result, the president has managed to accomplish what all of his Many Political opponents and his few media critics could not. The president has forced the National Media to look to our southern border and to explain to now skeptical public house 60,000 children in six months have manage to travel 1800 miles from their home countries to our border without support of their governments. The president would have us listen to more of his tired excuses rather than examine carefully the impact of years of his immigration rhetoric, executive orders, and actions, enforcement of Immigration Laws and leaving our borders open to whomever would cross a that well mr. Obama would further have us believe this white house played no role in what he would likely perceived as a spontaneous exodus from families homes and countries. Mr. Obama is a hard man sometimes understand, taking time in denver to play a game of pool was a colorado governor, drink a little beer, laugh off the author of a marijuana joint, perhaps not even noteworthy that he also cared enough, has sufficient character and courage to at least with this firsthand what he has described as a humanitarian disaster on our border.
