What a week. It ended up on a good note. Liz dow jones industrials, very nice levels. Look. Have not seen these numbers, 13 months. Thirteen months since we have had this time. The nasdaq moving higher by a fraction of a percent, but after the past couple of days it looks pretty good. Hitting another record high today. David small and midsize midsize caps. But stocks go up like they have been going in there is sort of a good feeling about the market in general, you see the index down. The low is 14, one of the lowest levels that we have seen in about a year. Huge drop. Its been going down for the past week, ever since they signed a deal. These levels we have not seen for a long time. Liz one year ago, the start of 2012. Financials moving higher. Same thing in 2013. Movers of almost 5 . Seeing a nice pop as a result. Making at three time bullish on financials, jumping three and a half percent. Liz david and as we were mentioning , continuing to post strong gains. The russell 2000 hitting another alltime high again today. This is the Third Straight record high for the index. It is been on quite a run. Liz this morning the number came out. We call this the all important jobs number, and heres what happened. A little bit better than expected. Calling the numbers a bit sobering. Hes going to tell us and what he is expecting as the year rolls on, especially with the fed keeping such a close eye on the exact levels of the unemployment. David as we mentioned, gold continuing to fall. Is this up buying a pitch in the . Someone says absolutely. Find out why and how he says you should actually played a metal coming a. Liz first, what drove the market on this friday. Stocks pushing higher with all the major indices closing in the green. Nasdaq and s p, russell 2000 finishing their best week in 13 months. The dow posted the best weekly gain in seven months. Alton sectors closing in positive territory. Energy and financials, the top performers climbing more than 5 . The u. S. Economy adding 155,000 jobs in december as the Unemployment Rate held steady at a four year low. The revisions to october and november increase payrolls by a combined 16,000. The u. S. Services sector growing at its fastest pace in ten months in december. The Non Manufacturing index rising to 56 last month from 54 in december. R. Rating above 50 indicates expansion. David all of this covered, our market panel, heather hughes, regional Vice President of sun america funds. Greg johnson, a technical market strategist. I want to start with dan at the cme. The ten year treasury is still below 2 , the yield on the ten year treasury. But thats pretty high. Its put the price of gold. It did not put the market. That is an excellent question. Initially a rise in Interest Rates mean that people think the economy is doing better and money is coming out of bonds, probably going into stocks. Initially this is good, but if we were to go for another 23 or 24 basis points, it eventually returned to be negative. Right now its a matter of confidence. Things up pass this week. Two big events that could have been bad, and a warrant. Liz okay. Sometimes they dont last that long. Well, right now, this is the type of thing thats good, but is it really as good as it appears to be . Measured by the iwm, up five and threequarters percent in four trading days. Was this is really good enough . What actually came out of washington will subtract off of the gdp because we did have tax increases. Realistically this is good, but its not something that would cause us to keep going straight up. Liz a question about oil. Why isnt the price of oil tracking gold downward . Realistically if we are going to have decent growth, and right now we are obviously pouring money into stocks. People think growth is a possibility, there is no reason for oil to go down. David 93. That is pretty high for an economy still struggling to get on its feet while gold is going down. But people buy gold to hold, and Interest Rates are obviously getting in the wake of that. People buy oil because they needed and will use it. Gold really is affecting Interest Rates a lot more than the price of oil. Liz okay. It has done pretty exciting. We will go back. Lets bring in our market panel to talk about all this. Over at sun america funds, and i want to bring this up. You guys have been looking at the same level. The s p closed at its highest level since dec. 301st of 2007. What kind of bold this that make you . Well, definitely not a raider, but cautious. If we came back, can get back tech trading, the headlines coming across the street from the circus. The s p should trade at a multiple of around 16 this coming year. We will breached the s p alltime high at those levels of 1565 going forward. David you know, when i read the notes, thought she was too optimistic. You make her look like a piker. Youre talking about the s p 2,000, 2014. Still, what makes you such a boat . I have to tell you, we love this market. Several things are very attractive. Dantesque some a couple just a moment ago. 10year bond yields are broken out. That is extremely positive. A lot of people forget that back in the 1960s stocks can go up along side rising Interest Rates , and i think thats going to confuse a lot of fundamental analysts as we progress. Thats a positive sign. Second, if we finally did break topside, which we do think will happen here in 2013, and it will be a breakout year, this market will accelerate. The sentiment of the market will improve and we will hear a lot of commentary coming out. You can finally buy stocks. Sometime this year we will sort of toward about 1700 before we pull back. Liz rotate it for us. What is the portfolio out of equities. In we like the industrial stocks. But very constructive. Seeing many big topside breakouts. The stocks making multi year highs. Emerson is poised to break the new highs. Also the financials. They look fine and to five phenomenal. Barclays, bank of america, long term multi month downturns. The monthly charts are all very constructive. David dividend stocks. Some people say that because tax rates are going upon dividends were going to see us line up in the value of these stocks. You say no way. Well, we do have clarity now. We do know if youre not been the highincome earner your campaigns and Dividend Rate will stay at 15 going for it. In the average Retail Investor sitting on the sidelines last year is being killed in fixed income and cash with rates near zero. There is nowhere else to go. Liz for example, and i know you dont pick stocks specifically. American electric power ceo talking about electrical usage, a company which has done pretty well, but they have a dividend yield, he looked at utilities, real opportunity when it comes to that Master Limited partnerships. To you feel confident enough, those areas to say its okay to go back. Youre right. Youre getting paid to wait. And especially after this segment yesterday, they may withdraw the liquidity prior to the six and a half target of unemployment. Now, if and when they start doing that, on the long end of the curve you do still want to be in dividend paying stocks. That seems to be a consensus with the advisers in the retail. Liz im looking and a 3month charge for bank of america. It is practically straight up. Are you sure its not too late to get in on that . , and more of an upside is a half . I think you need to step back. A lot of people are focusing in the short term charts. Look at the monthly charge. The stock is only just started to get going. You can see the stock not trouble. Again david based on what specifically . Tripling of the stock is quite a projection. Well, we have had an extreme compression in the overall sentiment toward the entire financial sector. I was recently marketing throughout europe. No one as a financial sector. Completely under weight. The rewaging toward financials. Number two, as the economy improves and loan Growth Continues to pick up, thats going to be a positive for bankamerica. We definitely like were seeing. David it would have to go back to levels that its all before the crash about four years ago to go on to that. Her nose. We may be on a big upswing. Get to see you both. Have a great weekend. Thank you. David well, gold continuing to tumble after being spent by yesterdays comments command of the fed. Coming up, find out if this is a buying opportunity for gold. Liz 155,000 jobs were added in december thanks to a boost in construction. Workers like that on your screen, bringing the total for 2012 to just under 2 million. Not a strong recovery, but we will gain more strength. David the debt ceiling battle be avoided thanks to a coin . One point with the choice in dollars. Liz and his name is clear. The man who ran to of Warren Buffetts top businesses. It no more sec investigation into whether he has done some trading and investing. He spoke to fox business. Wait until you hear what he has to say. [ male announcer ] this is karen anjeremiah. The enzymes in biotene products help supplement zymes that are naturally in saliva. Those that are suffering can certainly benefit from biotene. Liz quite a bit of news impacting Warren Buffetts berkshire hathaway. Lets get back to Nicole Petallides on the floor of the new york stock exchange. Nicole. Reporter well, doing just fine. There were both tired. Shares up about onequarter of 1 . It was an interesting day for Warren Buffett. Berkshire hathaway. Of course sokol. A former executive at brookshire, amid questions of his trading in Chemical Company that later berkshire athlete. David actually acquired. We will was interesting is after all the finding it turned out there saying that he didnt do anything wrong and all. And now you have some of direct quotes from him. His lawyer has some tough talk and to sing, there are two different kinds of ways to settle something. Does not enough evidence to go forward and the other side of the the says you did nothing wrong. That seemed to be the case here. We do look of berkshire hathaway, obviously a big company. Today up arrows. Liz the sec did not give us a comment. Im just wondering if they felt they could not go forward with the case because they did not have enough. Some any questions. So we picked up the phone. I call them, as you know. I spoke with him about the sec dropping an investigation into the investment. He tells fox business he was thrilled that the sec made the conclusion they did. I also asked him if it was his decision to resign because as you see me with Warren Buffett, Warren Buffett issued a press release saying david wanted to leave and we will miss some. There was a line at the bottom of said he has made some trades. He said he was later on where bad he had recently bought the shares. I tried to resign two years earlier than when i did because i want to start my own money company. He said he had no regrets and that it was absolutely unconditionally his idea to resign. Various speaking with us. He felt he had misread about the trade. He bought the stock and told us that he ought to look at this company and buy it. But it, the stock jumped. He made a ton of money. To add insult to injury to the old process, he was responsible for the legal fees. Even though there were on opposite ends of all of this. Today he had no comment on the issue. But he did say, because i asked him, you done pretty well. Four straight years of positive returns. He sees no reason why this should not be a good year. When i asked him, what is right about america is way more important than what is wrong with washington d. C. He has a very calm collected out but. Speaking to a fox business, only to fox business tomatoes that he was absolutely thrilled and never felt he did anything wrong in the first place. David very interesting story. Gold taking another big hit today falling another 25. This is the sixth straight week of losses, the longest slump for gold since 2004, but we have someone who says this is a buying opportunity. This is a moment you dont want to rest missed. Managing director of etf securities. Why buy gold if the fed comes out with this big announcement, the nets of yesterdays meeting, they stop printing money before the end of 2013. That was seen to be bearish, not bullish. I think if you look at the turn of the last couple of years, whenever gold a selloff, it is represented by an opportunity. If we look david let me push you on this. On the fed announcement, did that give you shivers . If the fed were to raise rates, then almost certainly that would be negative for gold. We just dont believe that that is a very likely scenario. David the fed does not have im not sure that i disagree with your position, but im just saying that the fed is realizing it does not have the power used half to turn around the economy or even to deal with Interest Rates. We saw the ten year treasury yield go up. If the yield on the ten year treasury goes over 2 percent, isnt that also bearish . They done a very good job in anchoring Interest Rate to zero, and theyre still made it very clear that they want to keep Interest Rates as low as possible through 2015. The stimulus programs active until they get the empire rate down. The hundred and 50,000 jobs to the latest number. Clearly that is a good sign, but is still far from where we need to be. Bring that level down. David i just think that sometimes interest levels are beyond the reach of the fed. 3 we see that with ten year treasury. On the other hand the debt battle will be critical, not only for the nations future, but also for the price of gold. They deal with the debt battle to decide to inflate their way out of it which would be very bullish for gold. The other thing to bear in mind as of right now we are still in a holiday timeframe. The physical gold market, it has not cut back to full steam. The chinese were the biggest consumers of gold in the world. Still on holiday up until today which has had an effect clearly and the volumes. David of the chinese selling off . Is that one reason . Not participating or havent participated. Holiday and clearly there are a big participant in the market. When liquidity levels, you tend to see some of these moves which might appear a little bit more outside and it was in normalized liquidity. David at the end of 2013 what do you think amounts of gold will cost in dollar terms . Well, that is the milliondollar question. I think david do you think it will be up . I think thats right. We have an environment which is positive for gold. A rally and risk asset which almost certainly will benefit gold. Or we have some kind of debacle over the cliff issue with results in high gold price. David good to see you. Thank you. Appreciate it. Liz an interesting theory making the rounds. Interesting is an understatement making the rounds and gaining traction among some economists and traders that the treasury can mend of platinum coin worth trillions of dollars in deposit those points with the Federal Reserve and what about the government debt. David could this actually be done to avoid a debt ceiling battle . Elizabeth macdonald is here. First of all, will this be one really big point . You have to wonder whose face is going to be on the point. A famous face. Heres the thing. Here is the loophole that is under the debate. The treasury is restricted. There you go. There is the coin. And here is why were talking about it. Restrictions on the treasury in the u. S. Meant about printing paper government debt. Not a restriction on platinum commemorative coins. A lot of platinum coins to pay off the u. S. Debt. Huffington boasts has put it up on its main page this morning, but we are going to debunk this. Lets take a look of some of the problems with using or minting plot and coins to pay down the u. S. Debt. Of course youre going to talk about in a deflation. All u. S. Currencies would be devalued when more currency is minted. That is the deal. You can try to make money, but you cannot print torment credibility. One of 100 trillion. The other thing, the currency market chaos, Precious Metals in the market chaos. You can bet a lot of speculation. Treasury market volatility. I want to get tt the constitutional crisis because that is the issue. Its about the congresss power to spend. You has the power demand in print money. And the other important point, you walk over to the Federal Reserve with the new trillion dollar plum to wipe out of their reserve holdings. Wait a second. The federal home loan banks on the treasury assets. According to the constitution, you cannot it government by law must repay that debt. The other issue is a detritus move you have to wonder what would happen to the u. S. Credit rating if it dies deep down into jacks status. David all right. Thank you. The economy added 30,000 construction jobs in the last quarter. That, of course, helping to bring up the jobs rate to a fairly respectable level. It certainly did not hurt the market. We have an analyst ready to share his health care and pharmaceutical winners for 2013 thats next. Keep it right here. Liz breaking news coming up. [ rosa ] im rosa and i quit smoking with chantix. The hulu ceo, announcing he will live hulu in the First Quarter n an email to employees earlier today, he says he is currently working with the board to insure there is ample runway to manage this transition. Again he started, the company was put in charge of it, in essence a basically conjunction between abc, nbc a and News Corporation the parent of this network to figure out ways for people to download shows that we all make. So very interesting move that the kid who was in charge, kid, really young. He has done a great job. Growing up and moving on. Well see where he ends up soon. The fiscal cliff deal brings major changes to the Health Care Sector and we have a money manager that says new regulations we know it is out there, provide new investment opportunity. Jeff jonas, Portfolio Manager at gamco investments or gabelli. Good to see you. Great to be on. Liz people are negative in many ways with obamacare but you distilled a whole bunch of names that could do nicely even under the new rules and regulations. How do you decide what sectors look good . For the sector it is 1. 7 in new spending. Hca and tenet are benefiting from strong flu season and some recovery and in their bad debt but as we go into 2014 they will see significant reductions in charity care and increases in volume. Liz if you look at Tenet Health Care over the past year, up 71 . Hca, not a bad 41 gain. I guess what comes to my mind can those numbers be repeated even with so many millions being added to the insurance rolls . Can we see that kind of move on the chart again this year . Both companies are benefiting from the debt markets being wide open. Tenet is underlevered. They levered up to buy back over 30 of their stock. Hca has done the same to pay special dividends to all their shareholders. Now you see the volume gains. These companies have a lot of operational leverage and financial leverage. The impact on the bottom line will really be magnified. Liz theyre not taking that much risk. I would be really worried about the biotech guys or for example, the medical devicemakers have the tax levieded on gross profits, gross revenue, rather, whether or not they make profits r there names in there that can do well . Were a little more cautious on the device companies. They have restructured. Basically laid off people. They have offshored manufacturing. Theyre trying to deal with it. Liz theyre moving to costa rica is what the medical device guys are doing. Costa rica, ireland, singapore, any area with a low cost of labor and especially low tax rate is very popular. I think someone like st. Jude could do real well. They are recovering from some challenges in 2012 but theyre using their cash flow to buy back 7 00 pefs of your stock. Liz im hearing things about coindividualian, they have a exposure to europe than the u. S. Theyre not exposed to the u. S. But not exposed to the tax. But arent there a lot of european taxes all over place sometimes . We like cevidian. They are avoid some of the restrictive taxes in ireland but they are investing heavily in emerging markets as well. Liz here is covidian over past year. 80 of the their exposure is to europe and not the u. S. Take for example some of the pharma names. Boston scientific, biotech, are those names poised to do well or deflate a bit . We stayed away from Boston Scientific which is more of a medical device company. Their two main markets, stents and defibrillators are under pressure. Sluggish volume growth and very significant price pressure as well. So it has been a real challenge for them. Liz doesnt it make you think twice about sort of the lack of insight when it comes to the markets . A year ago everybody said watch out, anybody who makes anything will do poorly and hospitals will get slammed. They did fine. It has been very surprising. Liz happy new year. Good to see you. Great, thanks for having me. Liz we november know what will happen in a given year. Boy, when you look back to see what did happen, listen to mr. Jonas here. Pessimistic, david . David pessimistic talk a year ago about the boxoffice proved unfounded. Instead we had a record year at the boxoffice. 10. 8 billion worth, thanks in large part to magical ring, superheroes and a secret agent. We wish him luck. That is todays speed read [buzzer] liz todays jobs report stayed at 7. 8 in november after november he is report was upwardly revised at 7. 7 . That rarely happens by the way. Is the economy at a standstill or are there some signs of real growth in this report . David joining us is the chief u. S. Economist for rbc. Tom, great to see you. Thank you for coming in. Weve been hearing very optimistic analysts over the past 40 minutes here at fox suggesting that the market in virtually every sector from finances to health care is due to go up even more than it did in 2012. Do you think that optimism is wellfounded based on what youre seeing from this jobs report . I think that you have to make a distinction between markets and economics. David yeah. From a markets perspective i would argue, sure, why not . The fed is basically willing it to happen. They have pumped a tremendous amount of liquidity into the system. And as a result that is one of the reasons why youve seen such a positive outcome from equity market perspective and there is every sign to, or every reason to believe thats going to continue as 2013 moves along, i. E. , the fed continuing to pump money into the system. Sure i could buy into that. The interesting part of that conversation is, in a lot of ways you could actually make the argument the market decoupled from fundamentals and i would argue that based on fundamentals alone, you probably shouldnt be as lofty as you are from an equity market perspective. Liz hold on. What fundamentals . Are you talking about earnings . Are you talking about cash position . Balance sheets . Purebased economic fundamentals. I mean consider this. Lets say we were having this conversation last year at this same time and i said to you heres what is going to happen in the middle of year. Ism below break even three straight months. Job growth would slow fairly bankruptly abruptly, retail sales in three to five months. If i told you at beginning what would happen in the year, what would you told me s p would be at . You wouldnt have told me 1450 effect at thisly where we were. You would have something less than that. That is fundamentally. In landscape in 2013 in general we think youre looking at a backdrop youre struggling to feign momentum. Not losing momentum and maybe that is a victory in itself but were looking for a growth factor of 2 drop. I think todays report for a lot of people starting out the Year Economic activity looks likk it will be pretty good this year. Because when you consider the payroll report, over the last 12 months, guess what we have averaged . 150,000 jobs. What was todays number . 150,000 jobs. Liz tom, peoples paychecks will be affected. Yes. Liz in fact if you look at the first trading day after the fiscal cliff deal was passed and what did you see . Apparel companies started plummeting. A lot of Retail Companies started plummeting. At least their stocks did. Why . People look at checks and now im going to lululemon. Now im going to the gap to buy a tshirt or sweatshirt or pair of jeans. Maybe they wont if they see a diminished paycheck . I think this is one of the cruxes of the props for the u. S. In the first half of the year. This idea weve been talking about for months now, not just for the last couple days. Weve been talking about this for months. Taxes effectively rose for everyone because of the payroll tax holiday going away. And that is one of the reasons why we built in such a soft q1 in particular which will weigh on first half growth but we think, once you get beyond at that, youre going to have very bifurcated 2013 where sort of soft first half growth gives way to stronger second half growth. And we feel particularly now that it seems the cap x cycle is starting to gather a bit more momentum we feel pretty comfortable with our view that youre looking at this bifurcated year. David tom, one thing the president can do without worrying about congress for the most part sin crease regulations. The friday before christmas we saw 77,000 page report on the white house from new regulations they want businesses to accommodate them to. Isnt there a cost . A people say regulations are another kind of tax. A tax implemented solely by one brand of the go. Isnt that a concern for you as a drag on the economy. Im sorry from what perspective . David more expensive, more regulations you have the more Money Companies are going to have to spend particularly, Smaller Companies coming to terms with those regulations, right . Yeah. I think that is absolutely true. One of the things that really removed sort of a significant head wind from the corporate backdrop is the fact that you are actually, there is now clarity on the tax backdrop. And thats critical from. Our perspective, that was the one thing really weighing on corporate decisionmaking over the course of 2013 was this lack of clarity related to the fiscal cliff. Most of that was tax policy. Tax policies cleared up to some extent, to be more clear, tax policy there it is at least some clarity what it wail looks like in 2013. We think that will give a green light to corporations given the fact that the global backdrop seems to be stablizing as well. That will give corporations the green light to engage in capex. Youre not looking a great year. The but 2 at best. David tom, always a pleasure to see you. Thanks for coming. Thanks, guys. David appreciatist. Sony pictures had its biggest year ever thanks in large part to of course, james bond. The studio ending the year number one at the boxoffice worldwide. That could all change in 2013. Coming up next the former head of sony pictures, now chairman and ceo of mandalay entertainment, peter guber, telling us which studios have the big hits for this year. David it is time for your fox business brief. Democratic nancy pelosi will play hardball with alec baldwin and tina fey on 30 rock. The final episode airs january 31st. That is the late from fox business network, giving you the power to prosper liz good news. The movie industry posted record sales for the domestic boxoffice in 2012 thanks to growth in attendance. So can the studios who make these movies maintain the momentum into 2013 . David lets ask hollywood heavyweight peter gruber. The chairman and ceo of manned la day entertainment. A good friend of this program and this network. Good to see you, peter. You too. David every i dont know, three or four years we hear a new gizmo, new gadget that will kill the boxoffice in hollywood. First was the cvr. Then dvds. Then streaming videos. Liz will be at the ces meeting next week. I understand ultrahd is supposed to be the new thing but it never works. Boxoffice always survives. Why is that . Because people like locationbased entertainment. They want to go out of their home. There is so much time you can spend in the home. The young audience especially so. They are very mobile, agile and sometimes even hostile and like to watch movies in theaters with other people they disagree and agree with. Liz all the sag members and screen actors guild, Directors Guild of america, the bafta people get dvds of movie before they run it. I talk to everybody says see lei ms. In the movie threater. Lay mis. Is that the reason that sky fall, the james bond movie, broke the james bond record, broke that billion dollar mark which no other james bond has ever done because it was such a great big screen experience . Well i think there is two reasons. One it was a really good film. At end of the day accounts for a lot. Watching skye fall on a green this big or i dont care who you are, watching giant experienced films on screens that big is not the same as being in a theater having that experience. It is something very unique and special. That is what has fwrif driven to these Movie Companies with larger events. Watch driving miss daisy or rain man or any of the small independent films today populate the business but the big, money makers and big global franchises are best viewed in imax, 3d, 2d on giant screens, communal experience. That has kept audience attendance growing first time continues 2002 and that made revenue so robust. That tells you what next year will be too. David rain man was one of mr. Gubers production. I saw sky fall on imax. Talk about sequels, i loved the hunger games. Of course that will be a sequel. I think it is come out in 2013. You have done films made into sequels like batman, for example. While you are making batman did you think it would be made into sequel . You thinking ahead into the sequel . Hey, you invest so much money and time in the project you just want to get into the finish line. Sequel . Sequel . Playoffs . Sequels, no. Youre trying to make the thing work in the beginning. Youre putting every ounce of juice and joy into it. The studio is always thinking about that because theyre looking to build those franchises. You better not get your accent on the wrong syllable or you will have the what is called a flop. Liz depth dont want the flop. What looks good for 2013 from your experienced eye, peter .
