Just rarely so, 98 points to the downside, make it into triple digit territory as things begin to settle. Liz Software Names getting a beat. All of these names posting gains pretty decent gains, not a bad day. David lets take a look at oil. We went over into the february date of delivery for crude oil from the january date to the february date at the end of the trading, that helped to boost shares a little bit on oil, but other factors including some inventory questions. Were getting low inventory in certain regions also helping boost the price higher to go up. Liz falling in supply, and gaming stocks, take a look failing to get a boost from lastminute holiday shopping. Electronic arts, activision, some of these names are under fire for the violent videos as it appears the man who opened fire on the Connecticut School was watching a lot of violent video games. David not a surprise. Growing as more Companies Look to expand and order parts. Find out which industries are placing orders and the biggest hurdle facing the parts maker, and it is not the fiscal cliff. Liz you should avoid european debt through the new year. It has not been a great play, but find out why and where he sees real opportunity for you to make a profit. David what drove the market with todays data downloads. The dow crossing the unchanged line 43 times before they fall firmly into the red. Weakness in defensive stocks led all s p sectors, everyone of them into negative territorys. It was a broadbased loss today. Consumer staples were the worst performers. New Home Construction after soaring to the highest level in more than four years of previous month. The Commerce Department reporting Housing Starts flowing i861,000 last month, 3 drop frm october but despite the drop housing stocks are on track for their best year in four years. Application for home mortgages phone last week and the lowest level since early november. A report by the Mortgage BankersAssociation Says the index measuring refinancing home purchase dropped for the first time in five weeks declining 12. 3 . Liz because of the chicago mercantile exchange. A buying opportunity. And michael tells us why he expects doubledigit Earnings Growth in the new year in what thatll do for equities. Jerry leavy at the cme. Another was some erosion of the last couple of minutes, the last hour or two. Headlines from president obama, john boehner. Is this market a little overbought going at the end of the year . For my technical perspective, youre absolutely right. They have eclipsed the upper end, and overbought situation. From my perspective and my colleagues, we are shocked trying to figure out the market moving higher. A lot of it is trying to figure out, we know a deal will get done, the real question is what are the ramifications of the deal and how will that affect earnings. As a guy who follows earnings very closely, we see that the drop yearoveryear. It was from government. A noted state tax receipts are down adjusted for inflation 1 from 2,082,012. Earnings are down on the top line, where does the bigger Earnings Growth come from . David we have manufacturing coming in saying he does see growth in Capital Equipment so there is a lot of cash, as you well known, companies have been hoarding and they may put the cash to work as texas could down a capital gain is. Let me just talk about the volatility index for a second because what youre telling me is there will be a lot of volatility you say the vix is dead, why do you say that . It is dead. Not a product we have to look at anymore to judge inflation in the near term. They would think the stock is going to up, the stock is going to go up. Now they are smarter, retail and institutional using options as spread. The vix no longer actively measures changes in volatility in the short term. If you want to volatility, look at individual stocks in the way the options are pricing. I think quoting the vix is completely useless for the average everyday investor. Liz if you want to see whether a rumor or something is going to slump the stock, the best part is citigroup, they were having changes, the options were going crazy, you can do exactly what he said, look and see the volume to see what is going on. We will check back in with you in just a few minutes to see how the s p futures close. Thank you so much. David the founder and chief Investment Officer of portfolio llc and the senior Portfolio Manager with gradient investment. First to you, a lot of folks are waiting for a big pullback. Iwe had almost triple digit dow. But we havent seen any sort of big pullback. You say dont wait for the big pullback, it might not be coming. Why . Lets talk about what the big pullback is. Theres a difference between selling on the news of a fiscal cliff deal versus the armageddon if we go over the fiscal cliff. Right now if you have been in cash because you got bamboozled thinking we were going to go off the edge, i think you have to put money back in. If you are more tactical you can see whether they get the fiscal cliff done. I think that will be another way that you can get it. Plus, 2013 will be great. I dont know about doubledigit Earnings Growth, but credit in europe, and a miracle in japan. It is incredible. Earnings are starting to rebound because nominal gdp is increasing and the other thing about volatility, volatility is going lower making what could have been more tight, more stability going into next year. All of these things, they will have a great year as far as price concern. Liz we showed the s p for the year up about 16 yearoveryear. The nasdaq 17 , these are beautiful performances, can they continue through 2013 . I got asked that question a lot. People say the market is up, they are expensive, that is not necessarily so. The market is up because the Consumer Confidence and spending and earnings are great and the stock market made up of individual stocks that represent corporate earnings. As i look out into 2013, i see a bunch of tailwind called the energy sector, the housing sector getting a lot better. I agree Capital Spending and manufacturing is making a renaissance in the u. S. And all that would achieve market make for good earnings. David i brought it up with our trader from the cme. Most seem to be underinvested when it comes to Capital Equipment. 2013 might be the year they began to spend that money on their capital investments. If that happens, cannot create a boom in the center of Capital Equipment . I believe that is absolutely correct. Corporate america has high margins right now, but they have come because of costcutting and costcutting and profit trend is run out right now to grow in the future i think theyre going to have to invest in will have to invest in people so employment getting gradually better, youll have to invest in technology and capital goods and i think it creates a boom in the u. S. Economy along with energy, along with hosting. Liz make us some money here, what are you investing with the perspective you have articulated . I agree with a lot of what michael is saying, but taking little bit of a different approach. Going from sector to sector, i find it very hard with the growing monetary basis, there will be particular standout sectors that we can invest in now and we will be profiting from six months from now. Id much rather see people they want to be shown the business of the market and make some cash, a broadbased index. Dont worry about value or growth or housing. But it will be great. Just get the whole index and the rise of the market, if you want to go outside the united states, go for the emerging markets. Dont have to go into europe right now, but keep it brought because if not the en may end up getting the one sector and did not quite been home the bacon. Keep it brought in the cheap and you will make money no matter what. David that is one way of putting your money, betting on entire sector rather than just one stock. Yes, i would agree. It is a great way to play Technology Investing taking place in Corporate America and frenzy around the world especially in emerging markets. It is a broadbased usbased Technology Stock which are cheap right now dominated the Biggest Holding is apple, think apple has pulled back, the etf at inoperable point to buy right now. It will make you money in 2013. David always a pleasure to see you guys, thank you for coming in, appreciate it. Liz already warning the u. S. Is heading toward a downgrade thanks to the fiscal cliff. What were th would the impact bn treasuries . Up next, the chief income strategist plus we will find out where he is seeing opportunity in the new year. David president obama saying maybe the reason we dont you dt already have a debt deal as republicans have a hard time saying yes to him personally. What is that all about . We have the very latest. [ male announcer ] this is steve. He loves risk. But whether heslimbing everest, scuba diving the Great Barrier reef with sharks, or mping into the marke he goes with people he trusts, which is why he trades with a company that doesnt nickel and dime him withidden fees. So he can worry about other things, like what the market is doing and being ready, no matter what happens, which isnt rocket science. Its just common sense, from td ameritrade. David s p futures are closing right now. We had a downward move at the end of the closing day. Will that extend into tomorrow . With a little bit of a boost higher. With them basically to where they close the traders will be looking toward tomorrow to see the further data. It is a big one looking at unchanged numbers at the core. It is all about what comes day by day with the fiscal cliff talks. Liz do you hear the bell ringing in your ears, people screaming in your head . The one hour i get to sleep is with the bell. David you make a lot of money, but there is a price to be paid. Liz shares of smith wesson to getting a bit of a boost today. Lets head back before the New York Stock Exchange after getting hammered these past few days. Lauren this has been an awful few days for smith wesson. They gave back about 7 , but also provided a downgrade to neutral, this is the reason why. The analyst explicitly saying the newtown tragedy provides pressure on stricter gun laws. The ban of sales of assault rifles and magazines with overhang of the congressional gun debate going on. It will be very interesting to watch how these gu gunmakers and manufactures do with everything going on around us. We did see a nice comeback for smith wesson today. David lets take a look at them right now, the numbers for bed, bath, and beyond . Liz looking at a name they were waiting to see what margins were here. The stocks are trending at the moment. Cse 1. 75 for the outlook, that maybe what it is getting people little bit spooked. As you see, this is a big drop after the minute they came oof e headlines, when their modeling the net earnings per diluted share to increase approximately 12 , analysts looking at those saying what about that. Authorizing a new Share Repurchase program about 2. 5 billion. David we have an analyst watching, what do you think of these numbers . The numbers dont like it after hours. Coming into the number, we had it as a neutral. Basebala small piece. Bed, bath, and beyond in a big transition. As far as the Share Repurchase, the stock was 100 not that long ago, could go down to 50 easily. In terms of bed, bath, and beyond moving forward, they have competition and analyst at this point dont feel comfortable owning it. Their products are tj marshall , marshalls, it is a tough competition for bed, bath, and beyond. Liz that has been one of their problems. People are using the coupons, analysts said that is hurting their margins today. That is right. They change the coupon, said if you use it now, 20 from if you use it a month or so, you get 10 . If they get rid of it all altogether, that is the biggest marketing ploy. David watch out for the afterhours figures moving downward. Recovering a little bit, well off of the closing price. Good to see you. Treasury prices rising today pushing yields down from the highest level in about two months. Liz joining us to weigh in on what is moving the fixed income market. And again when we say fixed income, it is important to point out Corporate Bonds, treasuries, lets tackle treasuries first. Especially superimposed fitch possibly downgrading u. S. Credit and of course we know what that looks like, wasnt the worst thing in the world for treasuries a year ago because s p did it. What you expect, lets tackle treasuries first. First bought think regardless of how the fiscal cliff negotiations are ultimately result, theres a pretty good probability over the course we see a ratings downgrade. The good news at least for the markets perspective is we have been through this process before. In summer 2000 was a little bit more. A traditional sort of risk off trading. Spread in Corporate Bonds and treasury yields continu continuo fall despite the fact the treasury being downgraded. Liz it is surprising to me is anybody buying treasuries in this market right now with the yields so low, it is practically throwing money away. They know the Federal Reserve is buying 70 of the Treasury Bonds right now, but who else is buying . There are lots of investors. For an individual investor to have the treasury market right now is returning to the risk. Who do the math all it takes is 22 increase in tenyear treasury yields over the next 12 months which legitimately could wipe out a years worth of income for the father and with the decline. Liz wears a better opportunity in the fixed income . A couple of areas from Investment Grade in the high yield market. But at the risk return tradeoff right now, they look most attractive to us, other areas who like the Higher Quality than is both bonds. The last week alone spreads relative to treasuries have widened out, it is a Good Opportunity given the last few days of the year to get i it on the meaty side of things. David they seem to be rating the game against savers. As everything time for fixed income . Certainly not in our recent memory, the part of the reason the fed is rigging the game is to encourage them to spend and generate support for Economic Activity in the short term. As we have seen it is only gone so far sort of diminishing returns for further fed actions is not so much helping spenders. Liz what do you think is the biggest risk in 2013 for all investors . The speed of the biggest risk is a level of Interest Rates. Increase in Interest Rates historically have negative impacts in the stock market. They tend to come down a little bit. David appreciated. Fixed income strategist. Liz president obama says he is prepared to do tough things for a fiscal deal and there is no reason these talks should fail. Ford is Holding Things . Going to d. C. Liz the white house vowing president obama will veto Speaker Boehners plan b as its called, the bill that raises tax rates for americans earning more than one million to liars a year. David with less than two weeks until the deadline is there any hope of a deal . Rich edson joins us with the latest from inside the beltway. A lot of pressers today, rich. There are. David, Senior Administration officials says the discussion between the speaker and president basically stopped since House Speaker john boehner offered that second plan, plan. About. It seems like now the most likely plan. President obama saying basically its very hard for republicans to say yes to him. He says that republicans are looking simply to score political points. Shortly thereafter Speaker Boehner responded to the president. Tomorrow the house will pass legislation to make permanent tax relief for nearly every american. 99. 81 of the american people. Then the president will have a decision to make. He can call on a Senate Democrats to pass that bill, or, he can be responsible for the largest tax increase in american history. Were going to wait and see if they pass it but there is no way this plan passes in the senate, no way. There is no way it passes the senate as its is currently constructed. There is difference there. Look what the house will vote on tomorrow. This is the republican plan, plan. About, back plan, whatever you want to call it. It makes permanent income tax rates for amounts of income less than one Million Dollars. Tax rate increase on those making more. Capital gains and dividends stay 15 for the top rate. Under a million. Over a million goes to 20 . Permanent patch of the alternative minimum tax would means 10 of millions of americans avoid paying amt. That becomes permanent. Congress wouldnt do it every year. The estate tax goes to 5 with a 5 million exemption. Not in there, what is known as sequester, automatic tax cuts. Doctors treating medicare patients dont get major pay cut starting in january. Those measures are things that could be possibly added. That Tax Threshold something perhaps the senate can change. Senate democrats saying no to this particular bill u but doesnt mean when they get this bill if it passes house tomorrow and they could make changes send it back to the house and that become as way to of so the fiscal cliff instead of negotiations between president and speaker which appear to have halted. Back to you. Liz thank you, rich, very much. David parts manufacturer Oberg Industries, is gearing up for very busy 2013 as its clients look to expand. Find out which industries are otherering up parts. The one Thing Holding back Even Stronger growth. Liz always one thing. Which state has homeowners singing insurance blues. As you know the company filed for bankruptcy protection back in january. Suck suck, donating. Mark zuckerberg donating 18 million shares to the northern Profit Community foundation. They work in education and health initiatives. Texas homeowners are paying highest insurance premiums in the country. According to the National Association of insurance commission, homeowners in the Lone Star State are paying 1056 a year. Well above the National Average of 909. I would have thought it was new jersey. David bingo. You got it. Right on time. Were hearing from countless Business Executives saying theyre holding on until certainty comes out of the washington area. We found one Company Growing strong planning for a solid 10 increase in growth in the new year. Joining us now in a fox business exclusive, the executive Vice President at obe are. G industries. First of all, rich, 10 growth, what makes you so bullish that youre going to meet that target . You know were linked to a couple very encouraging markets. One being the energy market, the medical market and the aerospace market. These markets are all looking for precision machine parts, that is something that were very good at. We just see a strong demand. Weve had a good demand in 2012 and we actually and we see more growth in 2013. David you put a lot of money in onthejob training. How has that paid off for you . Were probably the first to have a state Certified Apprenticeship Program in pennsylvania. We currently have probably 25 guys, young people in the program. And that is helped us in down times. We have continued to invest in our people and in our equipment and thats helped us be prepared prepared for some spikes weve had. Weve seen in the past few years. David is it actually hard to find that entry level employee . Because they have to have a certain modicum of skills before you can even get them there to train them . It is, david. What we see and what we would encourage would be for schools to get back to encouraging mat and sciences and some of the metal shops. That would help us. We do a lot of training. Our Training Program would take somebody three to four years to get through where they could be an accomplished machinist. We do that. We pay them along the way and they come out and they have a nice career with Oberg Industries. David lets talk about where you might be spending money. If youre going to grow that much you have to spend some to grow some. Capital quilt, what kind of Capital Equipment are you buying going into 2013 . You know, what were looking to buy is equipment that can be flexible on the shop floor that can demonstr processes and also equipment that can take out the labor component to help keep us competitive. Were buying the latest technology in equipment. We like to say were conservative managers. But we try to spend with progressive technology. That helped through all the years at Oberg Industries for us to be successful, not for oberg, just for our customers. David were looking at one of the devices. You do make medical devices. We do. David there is going to be a tax. Yes. David i think its already in place where we have a tax on medical devices. How is that going to affect your bottom line . Thats a good point. It has affected our business. It is 2. 3 tax put on revenue of medical device manufacturers. We do a lot of work for these guys. It has affected our business. In fact the past two months weve seen a tremendous slowdown on those types of product lines. We would hope the administration would maybe pause on that tax, lessen that tax. It is not helping our business. And, at the end of the day, all of these taxes get pegged to a company like Oberg Industries and then get linked right back to the consumer. David yeah. We end up paying it, for it in the long run. Natural gas, one of the most exciting areas in our economy. No country in the world having progress exploring for and getting natural gas as we are. Youre a part of that. You manufacture parts that go into that process. What are you expecting in 2013 from natural gas, that natural gas field . Well, actually in 20 twifl, 2012 we increased our business in that market about 50 and we look to do the same again. David wow. Larger numbers into 2013. The latest, were involved with technology, prototyping for these Major Players in that market. The Horizontal Drilling Technology has helped that market. So just technologydriven to natural gas, marcellus shale locally has helped us in that market. So were looking for very favorable revenues in that market for 13. In fact if you look at our backlog, more than half of our back look is made up of energy type products. David wow you guys are doing it, by the way will you ever go public . We dont think so. Were second generation. Okay. Three plants in pittsburgh. We like it that way. About 750 employees. If i could go back to the whats holding us back. David very quickly, because weve run out of time. Really quickly. Just skilled employees. We look at our number one constraint being skilled employees and trying to find the right people for our jobs. David you know there are a lot of things to complain about in this economy, legitimate things to complain about. Good to know even in the bad there are Companies Like yours doing extraordinarily well. Congratulations. Thank you, david. David rich bartek from Oberg Industries. Thanks for being here. Thanks for having us. David absolutely. Liz, whats next. Liz what is not and not in realty in the going into the new year . We. Plus the government selling off its remaining stake in General Motors. That means the taxpayer could be losing billions of dollars . Peter barnes drives us through the numbers. I always wait until the last minute. Can i still ship a gift in time r christmas . Yeah, sure you can. Great. Wheres your gift . Uh. Whew. [ male announcer ] break from the holiday stress. Ship Fedex Express by december 22nd for christmas delivery. Heres your fox business brief. Thats the latest from fox business, giving you the power to prosper. Liz new Housing Starts fell 3 in november from the previous month but according to our next guest there is a segment of the real estate world, the commercial real estate area, that has really been moving full steam ahead and will do so into the new year. Joining us in a fox business exclusive, don wood, federal Realty Investment trust ceo and president. All right. Yeah, i mean look, x the number we got today in housing looks like the Housing Market is bottoming or starting to move up off the bottom so that is good news but youre uncommonly bullish about our realm, commercial real estate. Tell me why. Why do you feel a lot better about things today . I am, liz. It is so funny, i cant even explain it but consumers continue to consume and my business is in the retail side of commercial real estate and when i look at people shopping, traffic counts in our shopping centers, i dont have numbers on purchases yet. I wont have that until next month but traffic is up, people are ouu there, retailers are doing deals. So you i think everybody is looking through the fiscal cliff. I hope theyre right. Depends on the day but i think people are pretty optimistic in terms of, you know, what next year will bring. Liz youre publiclytraded, ticker symbol. Frt. You have about 20 million square feet. Equals to about 86 properties in. In the shopping malls that you do have, tell me, don, what are the anchor stores there, youre saying traffic is looking really good. Whats drawing the crowds . It is number of things. Were not malls. Were openair shopping centers. Liz right. I am talking about, it is important to understand, the main coastal markets in the country, boston through washington, d. C. On east coast, northern california, Southern California on the west coast and a little bit in florida too and the great quality Outdoor Shopping Centers what were seeing are tenants like bed, bath beyond, tenants like restaurants traffic, health club traffic, that really is quite robust generally in those areas and that has been the case through most of 2012, markedly higher than we found in 2011, including the amount of deals that those retailers you know, want to do, leases they want to sign for the future. Well see about 2013 from the standpoint of whether there is comprehensive tax reform. Lots of things that are still certainly up in the air. But right now, most retailers, most shoppers seem to be looking through that. Liz are you investing . Youre closing on a property but are you looking at, even newer properties, building . Tell me what your action is. Youre taking capital and putting it to work . Were doing a lot. Were doing a real lot. We have 500 million today, under development in three primarily major locations. One just outside of boston in somerville, massachusetts. One just outside of washington, d. C. In rockville, maryland, and also a large project were continuing to build on out in Silicon Valley in san jose. So with more to come after that. So from a Development Perspective i think we are one of the few Retail Companies that are building new mixed use product. That is residential or office on top of retail in those locations where the demand is there, where its necessary to happen. In addition to that were buying and well be announcing shortly another acquisition that should close here in the next few days. So when we find great quality real estate were willing to put our capital to work. Liz well the stock is up about 16 over the past year. So we see a lot of these companies, im up 12 , thats great. You didnt beat the market. Youre matching the s p. Youve done extraordinarily well in what could be perceived challenging circumstances but let me throw you the obligatory fiscal cliff question, i know you referenced it. If we dont get a deal, are you worried that worm its way into the psychology of consumers and everybody floating on this . Absolutely. There is no question much of the business of business is about people and its about what those people believe over the next year or two. Right now theyre assuming, i believe theyre assuming well avert the cliff. Obviously if that changes it is a different situation and will be a different situation quickly. Liz don wood, federal Realty Investment trust and president. Let us know if the deal goes through. We would love to hear what it is. I will. Liz we want those announcements first on fox business. David you always get it first on fox business. Very good. David the government is selling its remaining stake in gm. Find out exactly how much of a hole you, the taxpayer, will be on the losing end of the this deal. Thats coming next. Hundreds of clowns filling the streets of mexico city. Why on earth are they doing it . Well tell you why, coming up right here on fox business. Copd makes it hard to bathe, but with advair, im breathing better. So now i can be in the scene. Liz fiscal cliff talks are heating up inside the beltway. David peter barnes is following the latest live from the white house where today a lot of Business Leaders met with the president , or at least leaders in the white house. Go ahead, peter. Thats right, david and liz. Treasury secretary geithner, omb director, jack lew, president s chief of staff, calling in Business Leaders here today to brief them on the fiscal cliff talks. They included tom donohue of u. S. Chamber of commerce, the ceo of lockheed martin, representing defense contractors. Tim pawlenty Financial Services roundtable, representing big banks on wall street and dan danner representing small businesses. Coming in for a meeting that looked like it lasted 45 minutes. Cord to a person briefed on the meeting this is part of the ongoing outreach to the Business Community to get a balanced plan to avert the fiscal cliff or some kind of a grand bargain. That is what the president was out in the Briefing Room today pressuring republicans on. He came out to talk about newtown and the tragedy there and potential gun control measures but he wased is asked a lot about the fiscal cliff talks. He said, quote, he said, he had basically come to the middle here with republicans. He had said that the republicans haed conceded rates on higher income earners had to go up. They will vote on raising folkse than a Million Dollars a year. They are a if you00 billion apart on spending cuts and said republicans, take the deal. Liz take the deal. General motors, the auto giant takes its first step to be governmentfree. The stock was really juiced on that stock today. Thats right. The treasury announcing this morning it would sell out the governments 27 stake, remaining stake. 500 million shares over the next 12 to 15 months. The government had invested about 50 billion into gm during the financial crisis as you recall. Now General Motors itself has agreed to buy back 200 million shares. So that plus other sales, interest, dividends, would recoup about 29 billion. Which means that the taxpayers are going to be left short it looks like in this deal. The treasury has agreed to sell the remaining 300 million shares at 27. 50 a share. That would bring in another 8 billion. Looks like a deficit on that particular deal in the tarp of more than 10 billion. David and liz. David peter barnes at the white house. Peter, thank you very much. You bet. Liz do you think your commute is long and tough . Well after the break weve got one that might make you feel a little bit better. Youve got to hear this. As off the desk, folks who are allergic to clowns turn off your television right now a thousand of them
