For pretty much all of the session for the blue chips. Money flowing into financials. Citigroup is jumping. Of nearly 6 . The story there, job cuts. 11,000 of them. Leading to a billion dollars in savings. Additional layoffs somewhere else down the line. Investors are getting this move a thumbs up. We know it is tough for employees. The stock is up more than 7 today. Bank of america, as you see, moving higher. The biggest gainer on the dow. Jpmorgan solidly in the green. A totally different story at the nasdaq. Down on the session. Apple getting a 5 haircut at the moment. Just under 5 . Perhaps tied to the apple, samsung dispute. There is a big Court Hearing tomorrow. Samsung is expected to ask the judge for a brandnew trial. Apple down 22 from its september highs. Right around the time where the iphone5 with release. The markets showing more conviction today. Lets get right to the floor show. I rub, in chicago, i want to start with you. Very shallow moves up and down. We are getting closer to the mayan calendar. No one is mentioning it, but the reality is that each day we get closer to december 18, that is when you have the real problems looking you in the eye. Seeing people the congress does not help. How much of it is the chess game and how much of it is the poker game. That is what we are seeing right now. Gold does not know where to go. It has no story. It is concerned with austerity. If we get forced austerity on the economy and we go over what is called the cliff, we will not stay over that cliff very long. He will not worry about what happens to the debt ceiling. I think you have a mixture here. What is that almost looks good. Less spending, more income. Liz gold, of course, which was down 25. Ended down on the session. You also make the point over stocks overall. Is this all apple and sort of the paul because of the samsung problems. Even though apple is getting smashed today. When you consider how much apple is part of the s p 500, it just speaks to the strength that we have. About 11 00 oclock, we had that sharp turn up. I think a lot of that had to do with some of the noises we were hearing out of china. Take a look at that etf. That is very strong. One other sector i want to put everybody on to is utilities. Utilities are very strong today for a couple of reasons. They really lagged the s p in november. Some of the noises that are we are starting to hear out of the fiscal cliff discussions mailing the rates where they are. That will, of course help utilities. Take a look at that excelled you. Liz that is exactly what we are doing. Natural gas. It is up 4 . Crude moving lower. Tell me about that moves and natural gas today. That is no small chunk of change. It is kind of funny. Everyone has different stories. I kind of feel left out here. It was a gooddmove on natural gas today. My primary focus is on crude. Going forward, from here, i think we are just in a range. We got up to 90 on monday. I think we will staff a little higher. If we do go over the fiscal cliff, how long we stay there for stock. Liz you start to see some real moves and action at those levels. 90, we came right back off. Until we get a more infinitive idea of where we are going, that is when you think we will see the build up above 92. Until then, we are in a range between 90 and 85. You should just say armageddon on 12 12. Liz so great to see you on the floor show. They were simply the best way to get better yields. Now more than 200 companies are playing beat the fiscal cliff klock. It is preparing its dividend for the next couple quarters. No dividend from 21322014. We have doctor Robert Shillman who have several billion shares on this. Thank you for joining us. What are you to this decision . Well, liz, first of all, thank you for having me on the show. The actions we took yesterday, we accelerated the dividend for q4 of 2012, which would normally hhve been paid some time of march and at the same time, we decided it was a good time and i will tell you again why, because of tax elections that we accelerated or prepaid eight set the dividend that would have been due for all of 2013 and 2014. We prepaid to q4 of 2012. We estimate that those other eight dividends that would be due in 2012, 2013, 2014 would be about a dollar. We will prepaid this year. The motivation for that was very clear. We have always believed in sharing our success with our shareholders. We have been giving dividends since 2003. Liz lets explain what you do for people that do not know. You make our code readers, you have vision sensors. You are pushing forward about 4300 to shareholders. Do you worry, bob, that there is a deal that has eventually struck before december 301 and that you are stuck for two years without dividends are what you then start paying more dividends . I would not see it as being stock. [talking over each other] they would rather have cash now. Let us say that the tax rate does not change, nobody is going to complain about getting their dividend 1. 112 years earlier than otherwise. Maybe people wont forget a year and a half from now where is my dividend check. We are not sticking anyone. We are rewarding our shareholders for their loyalty and their share of the company. It turns out that the taxes, because of the bush tax cut, the federal taxes due on dividends are 15 . People think that is low. It turns out, that the Company Already paid tax on that money. Whatever money we have, we pay tax on and that is already the shareholders money. We pay the Corporate Tax on that money which belongs to shareholders. But, okay, the tax used to be 36 got it used to be ordinary income under president george bush. We believe the tax in 2013 and beyond will go to 40 or more. Instead of paying a 40 tax federally, they will only pay a 15 tax. Liz have you talked to the president , and if you have not, what would you say about this issue. I would say that he should know more about economics. After certain points, the government raises less money by increasing the tax rate. If the tax rate were 100 , liz, how much money would the government raise . 100 of zero because nobody would go to work if the government confiscated everything. At some point, if the taxes increases and it turns out most analysis, most economists agree that that rate is about 30 . Up to 30 , the government raises or money by having a tax of 30 . Liz you are a very large shareholder, if not the very largest, you are saving about 690,000 on your tax bill as well. That gives people a sense of how much money could possibly be saved. In 2015, will you start paying dividends again . I cannot decide. It is not just up to me. We will take a look at that and see what the story is. Our goal is to reward shareholders. There are other ways to do that by buying shares back, increasing earnings per share, decreasing numbers of shares. We always will take care of our customers, that is what we do and that is why we are successful. Liz thank you for coming on the show. Robert shillman. I want to make a point about this. We love the product. It speeds up our lives. A fascinating window into why companies and boards are doing this. The closing bell ringing in 48 minutes. We are at session highs right now. You just heard doctor shillman who is increasing his dividend and speeding up the payouts. We have another fund manager with a completely different view. Peter anderson telling you how to cash in on repurchases and how to spot companies that are about to announce Share Buybacks. Keep it right here. Fox means business. Having you ship my gifts couldnt be easier. Well, having a ton of locations doesnt hurt. And a santa to boot [ chuckles ] right, baby. Oh, sir. That is a customer. Oh. Sorry about that. Liz we need to show you the chart on pandora today. Practically a jailbreak. Plunging. Down right now nearly 18 . This started after the bell yesterday. Theyve met and pete certain expectations. They expected a week Fourth Quarter profit expectation. Another headwind for pandora. The internet fairness act has not passed yet. This is something pandora has to overcome. Listen. And just terms of the financial part of business, the key is to grow our revenue faster than our usage. At the same time, we are working to achieve what we believe would be a fair level of content and that clause. Liz you cannot believe how much more they pay then satellite radio. They pay 50 . The other guy seven10 . They expect the act to be voted on some type of march or june next year. Coming up in the next hour on after the bell, everything that is pandora, a conversation with president and ceo john kennedy. We had a trader yesterday who said this fall is a buying opportunity. You can really see that it has been a tough road since, of course, march. Citigroup is looking to trim the excess by cutting jobs. Citigroup is one of the winners here. Not a bad move at all. Nicole petallides is on the floor of the new york stock exchange. We know it has done well. What are people talking about . Nicole citigroup is jumping on this news. When you finally have a ceo that is making some changes, and when you have the first move, they are anticipating anything. We know that he is under oreilly and oreilly really has the mindset to be streamlined, also companies that illuminate businesses that are not having satisfactory returns. You are talking about 4 workforce cuts. They are streamlining the company. They are getting rid of excess, as far as products and people. As a result, you see the stock sort. You can see it is up 7. 7 . Back to you. Liz thank youuso much. At 4 00 p. M. Eastern you will hear from the president and ceo john kennedy of pandora. Are they active members, that is the question. The fact that a lot of people like this company, he is the special guest coming off at 4 00 p. M. Eastern. Remember december of 1999. Let me remind you. The meltdown that was sure to begin. My next guest says the fiscal cliff is simply y2k fear. Joining me now is a chief investment officer. We have had other people talk about it similar to y2k. Why do you feel that it is not something to worry about right now, from an investor standpoint. First, i think the deal is already settled in was settled a while back. Everyone who has negotiated knows that is what goes on. From an investor point of view, i think you will find that the tax rates dont go crazy like everyone thinks. The dividend taxes, for example, you will have 23. 5 . All of these captains of industries, what happens when it turned and looked around and say it really was not such a big thing. What will they do . Will they go away from dividends and not have anything that has interest. Liz even with a potentially higher tax rate, you are still getting more than 1. 6 or 1. 7 . Exactly. Look at how many times in history we have had higher dividend taxes. The rate will hit around 20 . It could go as high as 36 or 39 . With that said, 200 companies, roughly, are accelerating their dividends. What has changed about your Investment Strategy . Everyplace has to be done on the basis of what the company is doing. Not any special dividends. It makes sense for you as an investment next year, then it makes sense to own it. If it does not, you will be down. Liz what is your favorite sector at the moment. I think it is right now utilities. I do not get this. People are so afraid. They are all off ten15 . If you are looking at con ed or axons, you are looking at companies that will be able to provide for seniors and savers. I think you could buy both. I think that individual names will give you a little bit higher of a yield. Liz stick around, everybody. Chris is coming back. He has the stocks he says that you can really make a lot of money on. Liz citigroup, the most failed outbreak in history, leave it to them to do the wrong thing during the holiday season. First off theyre laying off thousands of employees and reneging on their yearend bonuses. Charlie gasparino with the details. This is particularly bad. Christmas . Liz do not do it in the summer. Some would say, there is the grinch. Youre right. Liz do these people know what is coming . The likelihood is you work like 11 months out of 12, you will not get your yearend bonus. At citigroup there is a rule they dont prorate it. What he is doing is saying the bylaws or the rules, theyre getting screwed right now. Employees as well, they get bonuses. You get a good chunk. A significant chunk of your compensation is through this yearend bonuses. Liz it is what they all work for. At citigroup, employees have reached out and told me this. Reached out to citigroup and say why. This is like dealing with a gremlin. They did not denyyit, obviously. Liz shareholders love it. It is a screwed up bank. By the way, the 39, what is it really . Under 3 . It is like hiding how crummy it really is. Heres the other thing, all the banks are laying off people or planning to. We generated some headlines the Fox Business Network wrote Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs are contemplating layoffs. Presumably they will get their yearend bonuses. But i will tell you this with citigroup, theyre tw there ares to the claim. I dont like theyre screwing people out of their bonus. That is my word. There is a school of thought that shouldnt exist right now, right . They were flushed in 2008. Liz remember, they have filed the paperwork saying please do something, they wanted to see assets sold off. They want to see 6000 people. It is working for the stock right now commutes not deny that. Investors know this needs to be done, but why are they doing it so early . I think it is stupid to do it around christmas. Dumb. Should this bank be in business in the first place . Liz i am a customer, i like them, theyydo a good job. After you got the government bailout check. Liz i split everything up. Say what you will, was happy being with jamie dimon. Jpmorgan. Liz i have been with the nine for 100 years. That is your first mistake. Liz why, why do they do this in december . It looks so bad. I just tell any ceos do it in november, do it in december. Maybe they have no idea what theyre doing. First they denied it, they said everybody else jumped on, obviously got fired, whack them right out. Liz 28 minutes away. I am so excited. Doesnt pouring a up of coffee sounds so riveting . Liz 28 minutes before the closing bell rings. Thank you so much. Apple still getting crushed today, and theyre a big part of the s p 500. Liz i am just looking at the nasdaq quickly down 16 points, they went on a shopping spree 9 billion in a couple of deals, getting the Mining Company a thumbs down. Nicole petallides on the new york stock exchange. This state big deal on wall street. A 9 billion deal, no joke. See how the stock is doing down 16 they said they would be buying. Up 88 , but it is not unusual to see the acquired to the downside and being acquired with arrows. Obviously this is a very big deal talking about Oil Exploration and stocks. If youre a frequent shareholder, or little disappointed, but in the end they plan for a winning deal. Liz there is something called he death crawl. We will get more with that in a bit. More than 200 companies have increased their dividends in this frantic move to move up their payout dates ahead of the fiscal cliff. Taxes may go up on dividends but given the prospect of higher taxes, will dividends actually be dead on arrival in 2013 . And what is the next big thing . The senior portfolio manager, you are so not on the dividend train. I respect that because it is a crowded train, but if not dividends, then what . What characteristic should they have . You are absolutely right. It was a great ride, but i think it is time to get off. When we finish this fiscal cliff matter, think it will be some unintended consequences, and one of them will be the increase n stocks by back because of the tax situation. If you think like a cfo, it will be looking to see what the alternatives will be to use that cash on the Balance Sheet and buybacks are very attractive alternative and they will be n 2013. Liz they come at the market surprise, sometimes. Dont they . Announcing a stock buyback, you often to the stock pop on that news. They tell me shareholders are constantly pushing them to do a stock buyback. Explain to investors what makes the stock move to the upside. And lets see if we can help people out. The first question is they do have two file and disclose theyre planning to do a Share Buyback this isnt something that comes out of the blue the watchful investor can actually go and research to see which have preannounced they will be buying back stock. That isnt always guaranteed, but they must file and disclose their intentions. That is one we can start looking at things. The jury is out frankly whether or not it always will boost stock price. Simple math will tell you if theyre going to take out a pers 10 of the stock, all else being equal, you have to make sure that if youre assuming Everything Else in the company is steady eddie so to speak, if theyre taking 10 of the outstanding shares, that is roughly approximates to about 10 etf moves. If you buyback stocks. Liz just to explain to our viewers, Peter Anderson shutting the door on the dividend place. Earlier you said i am shutting the door on the dividend play. Now you say spot companies that have preannounced they will do a share back. Or you can actually look for signals that Companies May be sending out, maybe telegraphing they will for example be announcing a Share Buyback and it amounts to a couple that use could use the cash to do so . We all hate to have our fingers slammed. You can look to see what amount they are authorized buyback. Liz lets put up the names you feel the next candidates. Why, quickly. Because they feel that authorizes certain amount of buyback. It is most efficient use of their cash right now. If you simply say how could i possibly boost my etf with the least amount of cash used to do that, these Companies Come up. I am putting my cfo hat on imagining how i would be, convincing them that this would be the best way to use our cash the next coming year. Liz we will put the names up on our facebook. Com liz claman page. We appreciate it. Good to see you. Senior portfolio manager, quick mention in apple session lows right now down about 5. 5 in the guinness was the company for the annual high of 705 cover right now 5. 42. The closing bell ringing in 16 minutes. Melissa the dow is a big mover. Often the height of the session. What are you looking at . Nicole up 91 points. On the intraday chart we are also the height o highs of the n was still hanging on to be pretty nice gains. Take a look at apple intraday. This is important to look at with apple hitting new lows on the session as we speak down 36 per share, a full 6. 2 drop. In bear market territory, off of the 2012 highs. A big decline for apple. Branching out into the energy sector, starbucks not only 450 made of steel gift cards, but talk about opening 3000 new stars, citigroup 11,000, job layoffs and bank of america had to put this one on here, guys. Up 5 today. This is the best performing dow component so far this yearras we head into the final trading days of the year. Bank of america doing very well coming above the 10 mark that has not been there for quite some time. Look at the dow 30, only five stocks right now in the red. Still looking pretty good to end the session. Liz yesterday intel was one of the better performers. Today it is the worst performer of the dow jones industrial. Looking at the fickle number, what about u. S. Stocks against other opportunities read. All of a sudden up nicely, i think they have been whacked and a goodbye right here. They are not transparent enough. Many are swirling around, youre okay . Never you own a monopoly, they dont like to make compromises. Liz december 14 visit 14 is a. They are due to get the iphone. Liz what other areas do you like with china . If people are concerned about whether we will see more of a slowdown, what is your number one moneymaker . The telecom of australia. The reason they say that is a 6. 5 dividend. Which is great, up 30 this year. Lets say it does nothing over the next four or ffve years and youre collecting the dividend rising at 4 per year, you look at the compound rate, it is 8 . Maybe even more. Liz you still have time to be a shareholder of record. Absolutely. You look at the point of view of other areas to invest. You can own internationally by having u. S. Companies. Invest internationally would be a theme i think would be nice for everybody. The mcdonalds of the world, that is where there is growth and expansion. Imagine a starbucks, not many in the u. S. Liz they have 17,000 stores globally. I know the exact number, and they are expanding. They had to close 60 600 stars a financial crisis. Theyre getting in the same trouble. Said i would never overspend again, but these new numbers are pretty dramatic. That is part of them building the franchise. I think those type of companies that have Big International presence and strength of the u. S. Business may only expand moderately. Liz how long have you been doing this job . Long time, ive seen six recessions, i have been able to get through most of them to knock on wood, whatever comes in 2013. Liz what is your best advice for those worried about europe, spain, portugal, the u. S. And the fiscal cliff, what do you say . The easiest thing to do is to take advantage of fear. When people are fearful like the y2k example, it was obviously an easy process to make money from there on out. We will get through this. The fiscal cliff. Liz you have seen it all, good to see you. Good luck. One of our favorites. Dow jones industrials hold onto gains of 96 points. Can we hold all the way . We have six more minutes to go before the closing buildings. So glad you are hanging out with us at fox business. And we can save you 10 on ground shipping over the ups store. Look this isnt my first christmas. These deals all seem great at the time. Liz take a look at supervalu, the stock is jumping exponentially. You will see about 40 to the upside looking to sell two of the grocery chains. Investors are absolutely loving it. A gain of 0. 35 gives it a big jump at the moment. The sales have fallen through but they are looking to get it out there. Theyre really trying to get a better hold of what is going on in the business. At least one finger of a pretty good grip of a doubledigit gain. A pretty good move going into the closing bell. David what seems to be happening is a whole reconfiguration of the market. If you look at the dow or the nasdaq or the big index, theres not a lot of movement that individual stocks are moving rapidly. Particularly with dividend stocks, apple, big changes are happening but changes in portfolios are going on. Speak it has been a tough day for apple. David volume is very heavy. Acrosstheboard selloff of the stock. Nicole a couple things going on. Down 20 below that level, it is not a good sign overall for the Broader Market to see if selloff the highs we hit in september, plus the fact the ipad will face intense competition with the market share.
