So the point is, theyre focused on a smaller and smaller tiny fragment of the budget. I would make the cuts myself philosophically but there are no votes for them. What happened in the end there were tiny reforms to medicaid and food stamps and welfare. Then over time, most of that grew back. I say put it in a giant block grant, send it back to the states, let nevada compete against california to see what kind of welfare you have, how big the grants are, do you have to work or not and so forth. Send it back to the states, allow each state to decide who is eligible, how much they get for how long, what kind of work they need to do. You take over today, but over the next 20 years you better get this program disciplined, targeted on real need as your voters see it, or, youre going to die under the budgetary neil any politician, democrat or republican being acknowledge this is is not sustainable, immediately targeted or primaried to get then out. Neil the president is getting a lot of grieve over this planned budget announcement when he is thousands of miles away. His numbers crunchers will submit a plan that calls for big cuts in medicaid. Did i say cuts or just cuts from a rate of increase . There is a difference, a huge difference, after this. Neil president might be thousands of miles away, wont come back until next weekend but a budget rollout is planned with 800 billion of socalled cuts in medicaid over the next 10 years. Are we going to see less in medicaid spending in proposed cuts year after year than we have already built in . Well, first off the Medicaid Program is a program that is supposed to be a joint statefederal partnership. This program serves the aged, the blind, disabled, pregnant women and children but unfortunately what weve seen in this program is that even though it is one of the most, highest budget spend for states, even though were spending this much money, out comes have been very poor in the Medicaid Program. A third of doctors wont even see medicaid patients. There are studies that show even people with medicaid, their outcomes are worse than people that dont have Health Insurance at all. What the budget is going to do is follow the American Health care act which is sort of redefine the relationship between the state and the federal government and try to empower states so that theyre in the drivers seat making decisions to help improve this program so we can actually focus on improving outcomes in this program. Neil you know what, you would think given in light of press reports that theyre gutting this thing, i was looking at the spending how it is running year in, year out, double, triple the inflation rate, for example in the latest year up 9. 7 , and furthermore, on pace to cost 5. 7 trillion over 10 years, if it just stays where it is now. So, the president s proposal would maybe bring that down to around 5 trillion, but the, myc point is it grows at exponential rate. So obviously any percentage gain off these lofty levels belies how much we plow into it . So what were proposing here is that, were not talking about cutting the program. What were talking about is, starting with where the states are right now, then moving to more predictable growth rate. This will provide predictability for the states and federal government. And so right now what we have going on between the states and federal government, every time the states want to make a change, they have to come to the federal government to ask for permission. We have to review every single one of their changes t takes almost six months to review even a routine change. So going forward, putting the program on more predictable budget pathway, this way we know that we can actually turn the conversation away from finances to actually Start Talking about how we can improve care are to the beneficiaries. These are people that dont have a place to turn. These are folks that are going to be on the program for the longterm, our disabled population, poor children, pregnant women. So we need to start thinking about this program and how we can try to improve the outcomes because right now this program is not performing well. Neil you know what i always worry about, administrator, we do this all the time. Media collectively would include me, were part of the problem, in that we misstate what are cuts. A cut would be going from this amount to a lesser amount. Then we do the same pretty much when it comes to you know, trying to revamp the Health Insurance law. When we talk about 24 Million People who will do without insurance, 11 or 12 million have obamacare now, were basing on estimates how many could potentially be affected over next 10 years but do we do a disservice when we play fast and loose with this data . Yeah, well, you bring up a great point. If we look at obamacare, talk about the people they covered, they actually put majority of people that were covered by obamacare were put into the Medicaid Program this is a program for disabled individuals. Here we are putting working age adults into this program while people that are disabled are on, waiting lists. This is isnt even a program that is functioning well. A third of doctors wont even take a medicaid patient. And we know that the results have not been great. So the status quo is not acceptable in the Medicaid Program. I think we can do a much better job of trying to focus on improving outcomes and trying to control the program in a more Sustainable Way that works, works to actually put states in control of the program. You know, right now there is just this constant back and forth between the state and federal government. States are not in a position to develop innovative programs. Neil so your point it is out of control, upwards of 10,000 per individual, that is out of whack with a program, apples and oranges, administrator, snap, the modern day food stamp program, it is up to 44 million beneficiaries getting some sort of food support. I dont want to starve anybody. 44 million versus 28 million not even eight years ago. Double what it was eight years prior. This is all out of control, isnt it . Yeah. You know what . I think it is really out of control is the relationship between the states and the federal government. This is a program that states are funding and yet they have absolutely no control in this program, very little control. I mean every decision that they make is reviewed by the federal government. There are some regulations and so many requirements that they have to adhere to. And so, really theyre not in a position to be innovative around their programs. If they want to try something that might be, something different, they have to come to the federal government, they have to seek a waiver. These waivers can take over a year to get through the process. So that really prevents them from being innovative. Move into a program that is going to improve access, improve out comes, for the individuals that are capable nondisabled adults to get them into a system where they can start looking into getting jobs. So he contributes to the overwhelming coverage of his every move but i think you also have to look at what role the press is playing here in their zeal to hold president accountable neil they are relentless. Neil number of people i talked to are not too keen on a lot of this socalled memo that, memo, his recollection of a meeting with President Trump in which the president seemed to all but urge him to quit an investigation on general flynn. The timing of that release itself is rather telling, whether it was, was led by comey or leaked to someone who leaked it on his behalf. What you do you make of that, and that he might just be a slippery character . Will, you certainly have people who have, you know, for better part of a year now, lined up firmly against comey for one reason or another. Neil let me ask you to be clear, would you have seen this leak had he not been fired at this time . Not at this time, no. I do think that there is a some countermessaging going on here. You know the director, former director, certainly has a close circle of good friends and there is motive to rehabilitate in minds of some his reputation. There is countermessaging going on here. Fbi agents are taught to make contemporaneous notes to reduce the notes to writing very quickly thereafter. They testify to the notes and those reports on the stand. So, i think there is a bit of both things going on. Neil it would be two mens words against each other . It would come down who do you believe, people would have biases, president said i never said such a thing. Fbi director, former fbi director saying he did. You need more of something to proceed here, right. Thats assuming both people become witnesses and testify in a court of law and i think here you have a situation where the former director is prepared to do so. Neil so where do you see all of this going . A lot of people have said it could be another summer of 73 with the watergate drip, drip. Others saying way overdone. What do you think . Well, i think first you have, i think, irresponsible calls for impeachment, discussions about impeachment, comparisons to watergate if nothing premature. Well enter a phase where bob mueller will be the adult in the room and start to lock this thing down on the investigative side. Time will tell. Neil ron, thank you very much. He is recovering to bob mueller, the chief counsel in all of this, like a legal prosecutor gets to the bottom of all of this. He was fbi director for 12 years, highly regarded, republicans quietly said, isnt he friend with comey, will that be fair . Simply have to see. Waiting for President Trump, Benjamin Netanyahu in israel. He will make joint remarks very shortly. When they do, we are there. Neil all right. The president and Benjamin Netanyahu are going to be speaking to reporters shortly. Anything and everything usually comes up with the press here. On the same day, stocks racing along, a carryover to these weekend business deals we had largely benefiting u. S. Defense contractors like boeing and lock hed martin lockheed martin, etc. So were following that closely as we are rumors of a staff shakeup even though thousands of miles away. Reince priebus was due to come back, the chief of staff, anyway to shepherd this budget process along, but Connell Mcshane has been following this, and there is other intrigue to this. Reporter its always interesting to watch these foreign trips when you know domestic issues are not necessarily very far away from President Trump even when theyre on foreign soil. It was interesting earlier today, were awaiting these remarks from mr. Trump and mr. Netanyahu to come into us live, but earlier today in jerusalem before they went into their bilateral immediate meetings, you see this video, the two of them are walking away there having sat for a photo opportunity together, and they were askeding by reporters about this nowfamous be Oval Office Meeting, and the President Trump and the russians, maybe even giving up israel as a source of that info. All mr. Trump would say today was that he, quote, never mentioned israel in that particular meeting. Thats what he said when he was asked about it. On top of all that, we do, to your point, have the seemingly neverending rumors of a white house shakeup. A top official did confirm to fox earlier in the day that both chief of staff Reince Priebus and adviser steve ban nonare heading back, but the plan was always to have them come back to the u. S. After the saudi arabia part of the trip. Now, the other thing the white house is pushing back on, another possible shakeup report. Politico had this story over the weekend about Melania Trump, the first lady, supposedly wanting to make a change in the press office, wanting sean spicer out. Again, not true the white house says. What is true, its still a busy week back here in the United States even as we watch whats happening over there. This highly anticipated Budget Proposal comes out tomorrow. I know youve been talking, neil, about some of the headlines, that the budget might include not as much money for parts of the safety net, food stamps, medicaid and the like. So we should learn more about that tomorrow. But again, nub of these issue none of these issues very far away from the president even as hes set to speak overseas. Neil thank you very much, connell healthcare shane. A staff shakeup would seem like a big deal. Virtually all administrations go through them. A look back now at some of the more notable, if not notorious ones with game of thorns author doug wheat,c historian extraordinaire. Its a bipartisan thing that president s do, and they routinely shake things up. Sometimes when its not even necessary to shake things up, huh . [laughter] yes, they do. Its bipartisan, thats the word. It happens to them all. The average length of stay on senior staff is a year and a half. Well, when i went to work on senior staff in the white house, someone sat me down and said, look, this is the major leagues. This is no training here. Youre out. You make a mistake, youre out. Theres no second chances. So and you remember richard nixon, we talk about him from time to time. He quoted gladstone who said a good Prime Minister must be be a good butcher, and he claims that he should have fired haldeman a lot earlier. Neil nixon was famous right after his landslide election to ask for the resignation of his entire cabinet. He was going to pick and choose who hed let go, but that was long before the watergate thing came to light. So we do have a history of that. Do they change the needle . In other words, Ronald Reagan with howard baker coming on did change the needle a little bit, right . It does a little bit. Sometimes it gets worse. [laughter] neil yeah, true. But there are examples where it gets a lot better. Bill clinton comes to mind, leon panetta may have saved him from being voted out in the impeachment trial neil thats a very good point. There are sometimes some really good chiefs of staff who can make a difference. Neil as we wait for the president and Melania Trump to meet with Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife and theyre going to have a joint discussion here obviously, much is going made if american reporters ask questions about these rumors of a shakeup and that the administration is scrambling. But other president s, to your point, doug, have done this. So how should he answer . Yeah. Well, he has to [audio difficulty] service stay away from me, i dont want to be fired. So the president does have to act tough and yet at the same time has to be loyal back to the people hes asking to keep his secrets. Neil all right. Doug, thank you very much. This is the president , President Trump and netanyahu visiting the Prime Ministers formal, official residence here. I know before it looked like my kids junior prom pictures but, believe me, it was not. Again, there is a lot of pomp and pageantry and for the israelis, of course, welcoming President Trump. And, of course, those two have a longtime business and personal relationship as well. So it is genuine. The president and Benjamin Netanyahu will then be going in to take questions from reporters, make some joint statement. You might have caught Benjamin Netanyahus son, his middle son, making some reference that he could identify and sympathize with young barron, the 10yearold president s youngest son. He, too, was in that position when his father first assumed office. I believe he said he was 3 at the time. He returned to office, by that time he was around 12. So some experience there with all of that. The two leaders will be addressing reporters. Right now i think doug wead is still with us. No doubt the questions will go beyond just whats happening here between them, but more to the point, whats happening back home for the president and reports of this staff shakeup. But the Prime Ministers getting high marks with this president , early as it is. What do you make of how hes doing . Yes. I think hes i thought that was so interesting. Theyre like anybody else, when they get together, they talk about their kids. Neil very interesting, yeah. Thats the most important thing in the world to you, is your kids neil be back by 9 p. M. , kids, after the prom. That was a little weird. [laughter] anyway, go ahead. I would say this, i would say if you look at the two greatest successes so far for donald trump, in my humble opinion, one is the speech before the joint sessions, and the second one is this trip hes making right now. And if i were him, i would sit down and look who was in charge . What were the moving pieces . Who did what to make those things happen . And that would be my team, because those were successful. And if its your own soninlaw or your own to daughter, so be it. I mean, fdr had ann a that running the ann that running the white house that last year he was there. Youve got to go with what works, and thats what i think ultimately happens anyway. Inevitably, it happens. Neil a little bit more than a day left in israel where he hopes also to meet c. Neil neither side wants to do anything to poo poo the talk of poohpooh the talk of progress. What to you make of that . The middle east, as you know very well, is a graveyard for statesmen since before the british. Well see. Maybe an out of the box thinker like donald trump who doesnt come with a great agenda other than an ada of wanting to achieve success, maybe he can find a solution. It seems like some of the apartments now are willing participants now are willing. They want a solution. I havent seen that kind of an atmosphere for a while. Neil we talk about the 100 billion plus in deals that the United States and saudi arabia, different reports that the israelis didnt like that. Maybe thats overkill here, but for u. S. Defense contractors like it and some Electronics Giants like it and our dow likes it, of course. But we see a lot of these deals that dont get much attention in the press, but theyre pretty real. Not that we dismiss all the controversies around the administration, but this other stuff is real. These are pal be possible deals with palpable, very real projects. What kind of spillover do you think that will get . Yeah. I think thats the key to whats going on right now. I mean, our own national media, i think, is missing the whole point. They talk about donald trump is flipflopping. Well, he said this, now hes saying this. Well, hes a negotiator. Thats how you negotiate your salary or the sale of your house. Thats not flipflopping, thats negotiating. So he, he brings some real imagination to some of these deals, and he might find solutions because of it. As you point out, wall streets kind of bemused by this and hopeful. Neil yeah. Thats a very real transaction to them. Thats real money. You know, we make a big deal of style. Youre very good at looking at the things other people might overlook, doug, and that is how leaders appear to be getting along. Famously, Ronald Reagan while he got along with mikhail gorbachev, the two wives did not, and much is made of that sort of thing. Do we overstress that . I mean, i have no idea here what the case is, but what do you make of that . I think personal relationships can have a big impact, and and if you read all of Henry Kissingers books, you see how impactful they can be. We are human beings, and sometimes finish especially french history, napoleon iii, the stories of his personal differences explain the french economy. Sometimes personal relationships have a lot bigger role to play than people think. I mean, thats the backbone behind the monroe doctrine. Sorry for me to go so far back, but Mariah Monroe wanted to get married, and she didnt want the diplomats at her wedding. So personal experiences and the wives and the kids, they can, indeed, impact history. Neil much was made of the time of anwar sadat and begin, how they grew close to jimmy carter, they soured after the famous Peace Agreement, of course, after the assassination years later of anwar sadat himself. You strike while the irons hot, right . Yeah, thats exactly right. And thats where i think this hope is coming from right now, is that donald trump seems to have the will to make decisions, to take decisions with less fear than most heads of state going into these negotiations. Neil were you surprised that the president while he was in saudi arabia, his critics say, well, youve got to push for human rights. He made a point of not doing that and he wouldnt judge or dictate or lecture other governments what they should do, now is not the time for that. Whatd you make of that . Yeah. You know, i have studied that royal family for years and have many friends back and forth and know and have met with King Abdullah ii of jordan, so i know some of the players, and i was surprised. [laughter] it illustrated for me what a first there is for some real politic in the middle east. Neil thank you very, very much, doug wead. Theyre introducing the respective first ladies. Its a visit that i think has echoed down the ages. Because the great Abraham Lincoln is reported to have said that there was no city on earth he so much desired to see as jerusalem. Well, mr. This my visit in my visit to saudi arabia, i met with many leaders of the arab and muslim world. Including king salamerica on who salmon who treated us so beautifully and really wants to see great things happen for the world. He really does. I got to know him well, and he really does. These leaders voiced concerns we all share about isis, about irans rising ambitions and rolling back its gains and about the menace of extremism that has spread through too many sport parts of too many parts of the muslim world. Im encouraged that they pledged cooperation to confront terrorism and the hateful ideology that drives it so hard. America welcomes the action and support of any nation willing to do hard but vital work in eradicating the violent ideologies that have caused so much needless bloodshed and killing here and all over the world. We are willing to Work Together. I believe that a a new level of partnership is possible and will happen. One that will brung greater safety to bring greater safety to this region, greater security to the United States and greater prosperity to the world. This includes a renewed effort at peace between the israelis and the palestinians, and i thank the Prime Minister for his commitment to pursuing the peace process. Hes working very hard at it. Its not easy. Ive heard its one of the toughest deals of all, but i have a feeling that were going to get there eventually. I hope. Thank you. Im certain we will have very productive discussions, and were going to have very productive discussions, in my opinion, with the leaders of other nations also. And i feel strongly about that, because theres a lot of love out there. And people there be all nations from all nations, even nations that you would be surprised to hear, they want to stop the killing. Theyve had enough. [inaudible conversations] neil all right, and they are not going to be taking questions from reporters. Lets get a read on all of this. Bring in the Hill White House reporter here, jordan fabian, former senator evan bayh of nevada and amy tarkanian, amy, to you on this relationship that rekindled again. I notice when the president talked about his optimism after meeting the saudi prince that he could see and is very hopeful longer term of a promising relationship there, that that was the one point at which Benjamin Netanyahu did not nod his head. Obviously, that is a herculean effort, to get those two countries on same page, let alone even close to the relations that egypt, for example, and israel enjoy, huh . Well, i was not able to see that nod, unfortunately. Neil this was no nod. Ill save you the trouble, there was no nod. Oh, you said there was not a nod. Oh, okay, i see. [laughter] well, you know, this whole trip is actually historical, and i think that its positive overall. What i did find interesting was when Benjamin Netanyahu actually said but this was real hope for change, for the first time for realistic peace. Be that was a nice little stab at the prior administration. Neil you know, i caught that as well. Senator, much has been made every president , republican or democrat, wants to be the one to broker a lasting peace between, for example, the palestinians and the israelis. It never comes to pass or lasts very long. Is it your sense that maybe the environment might be right right now between these players, joined so many unanimously in the arab world, for example, about anger toward iran, and that might be sort of a uniting factor here . Well, neil, hope springs eternal, and the relations between israel and some of the sunni states really have never been better, saudi arabia, egypt, jordan, some of the others, and its because of the joint antipathy towards things going on in syria. But the real problem in brokering a lasting Peace Agreement has not been because of a lack of the israelis from time to time being willing to take risks for peace or the americans. Our countrys willingness to support such an endeavor. The problem has been the divisions within the palestinians. And so youve got hamas controlling the gaza strip and representing a fair, you know, amount of palestinian popular opinion. They just recently said that they finally were getting away from favoring the destruction of the state of israel. But, you know, a fair amount of skepticism. My point simply is it takes two sides to make an agreement, and the palestinians have just never really shown the willingness to make the hard decisions about the right of return in particular, the status of jerusalem to a lesser extends necessary to having extent necessary to having a lasting agreement. Thats where the change needs to take place. Neil youre quite right. With the Palestinian Authority having some control over the sinai but not some of these other areas you allude to, i mean, you can broker a deal with one but not have it with the other, and that does seem to be the case here. Having said that, jordan, when you look at this, it comes at the same time the president is wrestling on having his folks, you know, head back to washington to wrestle with the budget. That is already deemed controversial, that theyre going to have to sell medicaid and related, you know, slowdown in spending and leave head care and Social Security alone medicare and Social Security alone, keeping the president s promise, but even that is going to be heavy lifting with some of the things the president wants to do on tax cuts and the rest. And im just wondering, the added drama about where this russia investigation goes, is the president stymied in these efforts when he does come back home from this trip . Neil, i think the president has a very tough row to hoe in advancing things Like Health Care in the senate and hisc tax reform plan. You take a look at the budget as an example of that. All president ial budgets run into problems on capitol hill. Its congress, after all, that sets spending levels. But the antipathy among Congressional Republicans to some of these proposals like cutting funding to meals on wheels hasnt gone over too well with the rank and file. Theyre concerned how are they supposed to sell that when they go back to their districts. They have a really tough sales pitch on the Budget Proposal and then youre talking about even more controversial things like tack reform and health care. Tax reform and health care. Neil do you think, senator bayh, there could be a bargain where both sides put skin in the game to get a deal that, essentially, makes them both look good . Not on obamacare, neil. I think the divisions are simply too great, and i think the problems within the Republican Party are going to be significant as well with the kind of medicaid cuts and many of the states have republican governors and republican state legislatures which will make their lives much more difficult. I think the senate will vote are on something, they may pass something, but where the Freedom Caucus in the house will accept a more moderate bill from the senate, i put that slightly less than 50 50 that gets done. But on taxes and infrastructure, i think the chances are better. Neil if that is the case, amy, to the senators point that they could headache some headway on that make some headway on that even though the figure im told might be more like 200 million, theres no way of knowing, but with all the controversies, all the preoccupation on scandals that they can still get this done . Republicans are hoping to get a tax package together maybe with democratic support, maybe not. Do you see that happening, the year ending with those kind of deals done . I sure hope that something will come of this. You know, its a shame when you have the Mainstream Media still attacking a president whos being revered and put on a pedestal internationally and then you also hear of stories where the Prime Ministers wife is telling our first lady that the same thing is happening to them as well. So its a shame that we cant just allow these people to go ahead and move forward with the things that are the most important for the people here and the people abroad. Things like tax reform, things like the budget and making sure that every, everyone is able to put food on their table. I come from a state where one of the republican governors actually expanded medicaid. And, sure, thats going to make him look like hes a hero now, but, you know, down the road when this happens youre going to go from the federal government paying 100 of medicaid eventually in a couple years its only going to be 90 , and then its going to make its way all the way back down where the federal government will do 50 and the states will be 50 as well. So 7080 of our budget is going to go towards medicaid when it should go towards transportation and education. And were last in the nation there. Neil well see what happens. Its way too early to do anything. Guys, i want to thank you very, very much. By the way, we do know that james comey the former fbi director was supposed to meet with Jason Chaffetz today. I dont know whens that is scheduled, but it will be a private meeting and, of course, james comey has already indicated he is going to speak publicly to Congress Next week, sometime next week after the memorial day holiday to follow up on that infamous memo in which he said the president made it very, very clear he might have been trying to affect an investigation into general flynn, the former National Security adviser. So much more on that and how it reverberates on all this other stuff we just talked about after this. nininicninr ni neil all right. Please dont go, and apparently he wont. Leslie moonves has extended his Employment Contract new june 2021, this only a few weeks after his counterpart at disney, the parent of abc, espn and all those pricey theme parks decided to stay on at disney as well another couple of years. This follows a lot of Entertainment Companies more interested in keeping the management ranks they have than changing them to some untested upstart. Thats at least the way it was deemed, and the stock is moving up just as it did in disneys case when mr. Iger decided to stay on longer. Meanwhile, i want to focus on israel and how this trip is faring right now still in its earliest days as the president continues a mideast tour that will include meeting with the Palestinian Authority and trying to broker some middle east peace although that might be wishful thinking. The fact of the matter is my next guest gives this president very high marks for how things are going, former cia director james woolsey. Ambassador, very good to have you. Good to be with you. Neil you know what struck me as the business nerd here, ambassador, these transactions, the 100 plus billion this deals, and quickly i saw how some in the media poohpoohed those, but those are real deals, real money and right now translating into real gains for some of the defense contractors chief among them today. It should not be anything that would make the iranians smile. I think seeing a substantial military buildup among 50 arab countries with the United States having a very major role ought to give them a bit of pause about their imperial ambitions. I think they do have a small empire, but nonetheless imperial ambitions. Neil you were mentioning this idea that this president seems to be surgically im putting the words in there removing a lot of the policy of the prior administration. Yes. Neil what do you make ofc tha . Because that could be interpreted both ways. Well, i think the Obama Administration had some substantive bad decisions, but it also was a matter of mood and tone. When you declaire resolutely declare resolutely that assad should never again use chemical weapons against his people or youll cross my red lines and then he duds it and you turn the problem over the russian ares, thats a substantive problem that is more extensive, i think, than it otherwise would have been. But its also a psychological one. It made the country look weak. And that all seems to be getting shoved into the pot that i think it deserves to be shoved into by President Trump. Neil are you troubled, as some human rights advocates have been troubled, by the fact that the president is not going to lecture countries like saudi arabia for the treatment of women or any of that, that hes much more focused on the Bigger Picture and the bigger threat to the region, in this case iran . Well, on human rights issues with an ally, its one of the most difficult things this diplomacy to deal with. Neil it is, isnt it . And i would have liked to have seen him at least mention them, but hes the one whos working with the secretary of state in drafting the speeches and so forth. I think that its a situation also where we have to realize that even though we would very much like to see improvement in the role for women, improvement in getting away from some of the sharia punishments, cutting off hands, all of that sort of thing, we have had to make compromises in the past. Well, when i started working for him, of course, he was a very elderly gentleman, and i was aware of that, but alzheimers is very specific. So theres certainly, i write about in my book some signs that i starred noticing, and we i started noting, and we really only have the luxury of knowing what those are now because two very Public People decided to take something very private and be share it with the world. They could havec easily retread to the ranch, but thats not the reagan that is we knew and loved, and it was important to them to bring awareness to it and funding and research to it so is that other families may not have to suffer the same illness that he did. Neil you know, one thing i discovered, and youve confirmed what ive heard from others even during his years as california governor and when his first run for president and, of course, the successful one in 1980, politics is a nasty game, but other people were nasty. It was not [inaudible] and he didnt like. That he didnt like firing people, im told, that really bothered him. So others would do that. And that fostered this aloof reputation that he developed. Did you see any of that, that he in order to avoid controversy, he didnt want to hear about it . Well, i would say he usually used humor. Neil he did. He would use it to defuse a tense situation but also to put people at ease. You can imagine meeting Ronald Reagan for the first time, most people were pretty nervous, and he used humor to put people at ease. Even people who disagreed with him, they really couldnt dislike him personally. And he had a warmth and a charm about him. You certainly knew he was president of the United States. So there was a formality about him, but there also was this warm familiarity, and i appreciated how he had the beautiful combination of both long into his postpresidency years. Neil you know, a lot of people make the legendary stories that he always had his jacket on in the oval office, it was too important not to have it on when he greeted visit ors, to have his jacket on as well, but that in winning on the hill that he never wanted to rub it in anyones face and always make them feel like they had gotten something out of it too. And he maintained these relationships with those on capitol hill after he left office. Tell us a little bit about that. He did. And whats remarkable to see World Leaders there all across the globe come to visit him in los angeles. And they didnt have to for protocol or diplomatic reasons, they came because they wanted to. They had a relationship with him that they wanted to see continued. And their relationship was not based on rhetoric, it was very personal. It wasnt political. And how wonderful to see everybody from gorbachev to Margaret Thatcher to cole and brian mull rooney and mulroney and people from all over the world, even Mother Teresa came to the office postpresidency because they liked him. And you wonder how much could be accomplished today if we look at the personal side and the relationship side of politics. Neil yeah. Its her important than we think or acknowledge.
