And you wonder where the gop is. After this convention can the party expect, can donald trump expect big donors like yourself and others to come onboard and also the party to put the pedal to the metal . Well, certainly his fundraising numbers have improved. Lets dig back into the june numbers real fast. As you pointed out, 45 of Donald Trumps donors were in the smaller, sub 200 category. Compare that with clintons numbers in june where she had only 16 were small doe or nors. Big deal donors. Big deal is cash on hand also. You look at Hillary Clinton only has half the amount of cash on hand that obama did at the same point in this cycle. She also has a lot more overhead. The clintons never really do anything small. They have 651 people working in their brooklyn headquarters and have a 2. 5 million a month payroll. Theyve outspent trump four to one in the last month and have got nothing to show for it. I think this digs back to one of the whats really causing heartburn in the Donor Community and also with some of the battleship admirals in the political class, and that is that the 30second ad which constitutes the bulk of political expenditures doesnt move numbers anymore. It doesnt work. People have too many choices of content and absorb their political information through other sources. So its really, so money, youve got to really look at these numbers in different ways than we have traditionally. Obviously, shes spending a lot more money, but does she care if she has to spend 20 billion and she wins, this might be an asterisk somewhere and a footnote, but ultimately, is it important that donald trump continue the success that he had in the last month in raising money and even raise more money . Well, i think he will have that success, and i think convention, you know, people that write checks will be happy to do so. The big, 45 of your donors being under the 200 category is really important because thats a real measure of grassroots enthusiasm, and its almost a proxy for turnout. Raising moneys important. He knows right now that we are in the critical moment of union unifying the party. But at the same time looking for his endorsement, stronger support of trump and thats what we did not get last night and i think in the long run it feels like it hurt it is party. Donald trump has been a gentleman, i think he has embraced the gop platform, which is a conservative platform, i think he has layed out a path to restoring judicial order to the Supreme Court and as a consequence of that and given our choice in this election, im going to be working very, very hard for the election of donald j. Charles governor gilmore after ted cruz implored to vote their conscious, Hillary Clinton with the same thing taking advantage of this, do you think theres more that fear the backlash and work to be done in the party and once done how does donald trump send message to independents and democrats. I agree with mercedes said. We have to unify the party. At a critical moment about a month and a half ago where there were prominent republican leaders, never trump, jeb bush just wrote a negative oped the other day. I tried to become a voice for unity for this party. The party has got to be unified. We have to keep our eye on the main point and the main point is defeating Hillary Clinton. How does he get over that sort of fight against him because thats the one on the democratic side that they keep pounding away at . Well, look, governor gilmore and i are the directors or the rifle association, one of the most popular ads that we have out right now as is a black woman saying that she wants to be safe at her home. As a consequence theres a lot of folks, black, asian, african american, you name them who want to be safe in their neighborhoods and who, in fact, embrace the constitution. We need a president that understands that opportunity, Hillary Clinton and barack obama run capitol away, we have two trillion dollars sitting on the sideline, donald trump will put that back into our economy and produce jobs. That means that we will have americans of all stripes working again. Thats what people want. Charles right. They are going to do about an hourlong march through downtown cleveland and a message of peace, they dont like Donald Trumps tone, thats a fair protest. Until we see exactly the implications of the brexit on the economies both britain and the euro area economies, i think central bankers are correct to wait and see but certainly central bankers are trying to instill a sense of calm into the marketplace by talking down the concerns of the potential negative impact of the brexit. He has proven that he doesnt need as much money to get the message out as other candidates do. With the addition of governor pence, thats going to bring a lot of the old establishment money back to the party. You saw what happened last night, i was here covering it, you were on the floor that was breath taking what ted cruz did and not delivering what people like you wanted. Do you think that hurts the party or could it backfire in a sense that it might help fundraising, getting people jazzed up . Well, charlie, youre right. I was over by the oklahoma delegation which supported ted, the mississippi delegation, i mean, you know, the texas delegation is divided right now. Theres a group within the texas delegation thats with ted no matter what and theres a group in the texas delegation that is upset of what happened. It was surprise to go say the least but ted is a different kind of guy and does this actually hurt him in the state . Some people say it might. Well, his core constituency in south texas and he has other support throughout the state, i mean, theyre not going to go away from him but i think nationally when you see other state delegations, i think it could hurt him because they are going to be a little upset. Everybody signed the pledge. We are all in one team and now its time to win. Lets be clear, i hear that new york delegation booing. You dont pick a fight with the new york delegation. I hear i got this from last night, john and i were out having a few cocktails last night with some people at the cayahuga county republicans, they were one of the major fundraisers for them. It is going to be a teleprompter speech. Now, you never know with donald to the last minute. You remember what happened with the Vice President ial candidate. Pence was ultimately picked but he waived at the 11th hour and maybe he will mix it. Its going to be a its going to be a teleprompter speech. You never know what donald. I cant imagine hes not going to go off script a bit. Charles topic is Law Enforcement and the wall. He understands hes talked about that from the gut and the heart so often that you have to believe that once he has to start to talk about it he will throw add libs out there. This is this is the base. They want that now. He has to appeal to a broader audience, we know that. I think we need some of that. We need some of the broader i wonder what hes going to say about nato. He came out in an interview today with the New York Times which i found remarkable that he would actually, you know, throw that into the mix that maybe back out. I wonder if he talks about foreign policy, what it means to be an american if he addresses the nato question and people talk about that in here. Is he really going to back out of nato . The vast majority whether this convention is deemed success how donald trump the nominee is received, not just by people inside of the hall but across america. He will have to walk the tightrope making hall animated and excited but making sure it has a message to draw in independents and people not automatically going to vote for republicans. Charles how does he do that . Im not quite sure thats happened. I seen, more interesting, exciting moments have been sort of things resonate the most with core donald trump voters, which is great, but its a big party atmosphere. For the world watching this is the best pitch to make it to everybody . He can do two things. Show those concerned about his temperament and perceived view of impulsive, show a side reserveds measure, thoughtful. Not going in that regard, you dont remember who got you here in terms of grass root axe activists are interested in quantum change in american policy and politics. He will have to do both. He has the tools in the tool box or whatever metaphor he wants to use and make that success ses. Charles what were hearing themes would could be combination, law and order, considering the headlines and particularly the idea that donald trump wrapped himself around the Law Enforcement Community Long before the recent horrific ambushes of police officers. The wall, which is the thing that the red meat love, love, love. Perhaps nato, on other part of this, on economic side of this, trade. Because that resonates with his crowd and the Bernie Sanders crowd. You think that is the right combination . If you boil all of this down, step away from all the polls, all the rhetoric and pundits and just ask American People what do you want most, comes down basically two things. One, keep us safe. Two, grow jobs and put money in my pocket through an economic opportunity. So on the safety side, security side, that is fully within Donald Trumps strike zone. On economy, my hope and hope of a lot of others, over time he will lean into that even heavier. There is a lot of anxiety out there about changing job markets. Stagnant wage growth. What will happen next in terms of economy. I hope he addresses that. He has a lot to talk about, better trade deals. Progrowth tax cuts. Trying to slow down Health Care Costs in way to make it more affordable. Regulatory reform. Unleashing more American Energy sector. Those are all things he doesnt have to dwell on the policy details to make it boring but at least hit the touchstones. Charles what is interesting, i was talking with Charlie Gasparino, those things you talk about, sound like things republicans tried to articulate many time before in the Heritage Institute speech. Where does he differ . Where is the donald trump different from the traditional politician . Where does that voice come in tonight . Is it on the wall . Do you get the crowd chanting, build that wall. If you do, are you setting up Hillary Clinton . I think, you know, most people do not follow all the details of this stuff, tick list that i just mentioned other than conceptually. They see in him somebody who trying to, partialally has transcended normal calculations based on strength, projection or image of strength. They might not be able to tell you what the Health Care Policy is, they believe he will come to washington, d. C. , kick over some furniture and unlike other people that yap, yap, dont get anything done he will get something done. That is what they perceive in him. Well i think what he ought to do is talk about his lifetime, what hes done, how he raised his kids. The American Dream is important to me. I started School Living in public housing. Dont know my natural dad. Grew up this country where you build a business. My mom told me i can do anything possible. I would talk about. He is here for everybody. That he is going to make sure this is country where it is fair. You have every shot to build a company, do whatever you like to do in your life, as long as youre helping other people. Charles heres the problem with that. Just a year ago entrepreneurship dropped to the lowest level ever. Millenials are starting household formations at the slowest rate ever. Our birth rate reached an alltime low not long ago. People are giving up on that to say it is possible, they heard that before. What is the distinction here . Well, his race is similar to mind in 2010. I was business person never having run for office. I talked about what were going to do. Cut taxes 55 times. He will cut taxes. Reduced regulation. Reduced 4200 regulations in our state. We added one million 118,000 jobs. Entrepreneurship is growing in the great state of florida. We can do it nationally if we elect donald trump. Let him run the country like a business. Focus on jobs and get more entrepreneurship. Getting more jobs back in america. Thats what we would have to do. Charles i would guess Hillary Clinton, if he does give the speech, retort the man most famous phrase is youre fired is reflective after corporate policy or corporations big business in this country who look out for the bottom line and little people. Listen, i have championed business and job creation and low taxes and all that too because i do know that is the economic elixer that lifts all boats. I just hope that thats how the speech comes across, we already know what the counterargument will being dont we . I think people are tired of washington. They dont think theyre getting something out of the federal government. Were all paying a lot of taxes. We they want somebody that will bo in there and change things. Hillary clinton has no story. She had her shot. Never created a private sector job in her life. Never created a business. Had her chance to destroy isis. She failed. Donald trump has the opening right here. He is a business person. People believe that Business People can run things better. He has got every chance to tell the American People how he will create a great economy, which he can. The notion that maybe we wont step up to the plate of russia, if vladmir putin, tries to expand his reach, because some of the nato partners havent paid up their dues. Would we abandon our partners if their dues arent paid up . Well, first off, i think donald trump is going to, you know defend this country. He will do the right things to take care of america. His job is to defend this country and help americans. And i think that is what he is going so do, whether destroying isis or building military. Make sure we do right thing with United Nations or nato, i think he will do right things for america. That is what the next president needs to be able to do.
