Ah, i was conceived from the sperm of an anonymous man. I found out he, sorry, may be 600 babies all. Now some of my siblings are starting to show up. And they all want the truth of their origin. I always at she felt those physical bits of me missing and donna conceived people are all too often told you should be happy to be alive. But i also have an innate desire to know where i come from. And who i come from, an anonymous donor can produce a 1000 children. Talk is wrong with your child, dont get to affective disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder. And dont conceive kids have grown up together without knowing theyre related. Ive came in close contact with 2 of my siblings and didnt know, i think most of our gay ah, i want the government in the anonymity of sperm donors. Now of course, it, plenty of ocean continued to be human as to have a story. And to have a story, one must have the true story. Ah, ah. It began a long time ago in philadelphia in 18. 84. A wealthy couple couldnt get pregnant. So the husband went to see a professor of medicine. Turned out the husband was in fertile gonorrhea, so the professor got into sending his wife a chloroform to her. Then without her consent he got his best looking student to go and masturbate. And he injected the sperm into her in front of the class. She got pregnant. Some time later, the professor did confess to her husband what he done. But the woman was never told, and neither was the son who resulted this set. The tone, secrets lies, and anonymity. Now there are millions of people we call Donor Conceived. Im one of them. Ah, okay. My story so far. Mm hm. My parents really wanted children, but my dad wasnt able to so they went to see a doctor, and she inseminated my mother using sperm from an anonymous man to produce me and my sister. This was england and the 19 fifties and it had to be a total secret. But after our dad died, our mother told me and my sister that secret i was curious who the guy was, but they destroyed all the records. So i could never know until you could get basic dna testing from your blood. If i met a man, david whose parents went to the same doctor and dna revealed that david was my brother. He came from the same anonymous bio dead. I was great to have a brother, but now i really wanted to know whereby a dad was a lot of him is in me we loved our fathers both of us so. So why does this kid any connection matter so much . I hadnt find his time. I did, but it does. I did a lot of detective work. And with dna, we figured out the guys identity. He was a brilliant scientist cold, there told vsa the husband of the doctor who did the deed and our biological father. But david, whose parents marriage was troubled now remembers finding out as a painful moment. I felt so angry. I felt so much that so many of the things i had found and still do find really frustrating in my life would not have been frustrating. Had i known that we found out that visa sired maybe 600 children during his life or even more. We may be the World Biggest family. We only knew of a few siblings. But then came something new and expensive consumer dna companies, you know, like ancestry dot com 23 and me people suddenly wanted to know about their ethnic origin or their health risks. And they sent in their dna. And when the results came in, some of them got a big surprise. Like they have a lot of half siblings. So far about 45 of my sales have been identified. Here are a few of them. So id like to suddenly find out your dad wasnt your biological father. Its like a standing on the edge of the sea when youre paddling and the waves go out and it pulls the sand from under your feet. Thats what it felt like to me that the bina a firm foundation, and suddenly id got to reassess everything. I felt this makes sense that oh, so coupled with this immense sense of loss. Because it only been a year since i lost my dad and it felt like had lost him all over again. Ah. And recently some of this big family got together bitterly. Parties referral to the so to when i walked in. No, im oh, oh no, feel quite so election, a group of people before i came to the party, give me a chance to talk to some of my sims, but how they felt about finding out the truth. Like i had a very loving fairy, was not inquiry 15, but suddenly i had a truth and authenticity which was liberating. It was like a huge moment in my life. I danced around the flat. I was so happy. What was, who is a palm missing . I or i always at she fell, is those physical bits of me missing . And it felt quite differently down the side of me. The hall area, i guess she had say, it fell as i that wasnt there. I would like to have known. I think my parents should have told me i was enormously grateful that i was able to discover who my biological father was. And i cant really imagine what it would be like not to have been able to do that. I probably, oh, whatever that mean. So now the dna is revealing these secrets, i think its time to take a look at this question of donor anonymity. Busy because a lot of people want to know their genetic family is part of who you are. And also these secrets and lies, they can cause real harm to so of idea it can be done, you know, with a few shakes of the wrist and thats it. Nothing else that doesnt assume that there should be a bit more to it than that. I believe drawn. This sort of fog of who knows could have been any one except it never is. Its always the doctor out the back as seems to be. Ive come to ottawa to find out about one of those dr. His brother grahams talking about dr. Norman forward. This is rebecca dixon. Her parents are assistance from dr. Berwin to conceive. Ive heard he was called the baby god. Yeah. People. People have called, i dont know who started, he was called the baby got at some point, but they didnt know that they had donor sperm. They werent intending to use donors 1st they, they were having issues, but they, they went to see dr. Brown into their understanding, he used my dads firm. I had always looked different from my parents, and i was aware of that, and other people had commented on it, when scandals with berwin started to come out. Rebecca heard of a young woman called cat palmer, whose parents were patient borrowing turned out to be her biological father. So rebecca did a dna test against cap and it confirmed already that we were we were house of sisters, so berwin was rebeccas biotech, too. But there are a lot more than them. How many do you have . I have 18 siblings so far. You have 18 siblings and these are all from dr. Berwin. Yeah. The doctor who treated the parents. He used his own sperm. Yeah, we found 19 of us where he used his own sperm without the parents knowledge. He is my biological father, but i dont think of him in that way at all. He was always the doctor had helped my parents have me. And now i found out that he did it in a horrible way, also, sometimes berwin secretly, you spur me took from other patients without consent. All these lies have real dangerous cat and i are a similar age. Theres about 6 months age difference. Um we found out that we went to the same high school for a couple of years and we thought about how easy it would have been for us to be friends. But it could have also very easily been that we started it started dating or especially. Yeah, its, its, its a small circle. Like my family, rebecca and her new siblings will become close. And its easy to exaggerate the importance of genetics. I found myself dealing with the situation where with my dad, i say it doesnt matter that were not biologically connected. Youre my dad. Nothing changes that this other person who is my biological father doesnt really mean anything to me. And yet im saying at same time to my siblings, we have this genetic connection. Lets, lets love each other. Um, thats a part of each others lives. And i think its okay that those 2 things are true at the same time. Berwin was not alone, quite a few doctors have been revealed by dna testing to have secretly used their own sperm. But most doctors dont do what borrowing did, of course, they use sperm, banks. Corporations the ship sperm around the world. Millions of offspring, egg offspring. To now we dont know how many there is no central registry. Nobody keeps track. Nobody really knows how many offspring from one donor. But you think when a so called donor sells his firm, the sperm bank make sure he is in super good health. Not always. Ive come to see angie. I am very, very new to me. Yeah, i. So the theory. Thank you very much. Angie and her female partner use donor sperm to have a child. They picked a healthy donna or so they thought well, what we found out is that he had several debilitating Mental Health issues, depending on which doctors diagnosis you were looking at. It was good. So affective disorder, skits are for anywhere. Bipolar disorder. Also Narcissistic Personality Disorder was written in there and then he had a felony from a break and enter that he had done. And there were other arrests along the way. But i mean, did they get a medical history from this guy, or did the guy just lie and they accepted the lie . Yeah, they, they give them a questionnaire. They do call it a medical history questionnaire. And then they asked the donor to respond to a list of things. Do you have this . Do you have that . Do you have this is a friend, is one of the things that he was asked, but he just checked it off. No, we notified them of our findings. They just told us we had the wrong guy. And then they didnt notify anybody. Was the donor still active . Oh yeah, they call them out of retirement to donate to other families that were waiting for 2nd or 3rd children on a waiting list. When you look at Health Canada regulations, then i can definitely see why i was duped by this industry. Because i mean, you can even miss label the origin of a tomato, but you can miss label everything about a human being. Its going to be creating another human being. That doesnt seem to matter here. The thing is the law doesnt allow Health Canada to collect Health Information from donors and his kid is fine with only a small chance therell be problems. But if a donna has 50 kids with a 10 percent chance of inheriting disease, that still 5 sick kids, the sperm bank, say theyre doing more genetic testing now. But an anonymous donor can still get away with lying. Here is some of the health problems. Kids have inherited from donors and some of died because they didnt have medical information. All this scares me about what my bio dad reason and i may have given his hundreds of offspring. He actually had parkinsons, almost all the time. He was producing kids. My brother david and i meet up with my other brother david, whos been looking into the health risks in my dna date. So let me see the best one. Ill show you elsewhere. Okay. There it is. Parkinson disease late late onset susceptibility to parkinsons disease on another. Yeah. Genetic test or another gene, gosh, if that is obvious, marian legacy is definitely visa and because he had parkinsons. Yeah. When youre going to really dark stuff. This wasnt the dog so. Oh no, the great news here and the gene said that this man gave us other than that is fantastic. Just popular freeney. Crohns disease was okay, but it is based on your personal genetics and if the kinetics and environmental and viral triggers, youve got to know there should be no name, samuel. Medically thats over. Im finding out that almost all my serbs think that the anonymity of donors is just wrong. Now, of course, let emotion continue. Everybody has the right to know who their logical parent was. Definitely. I think for anybodys Mental Health, you have to write your own stories is very important for those of us who have been through this experience and think any of us doubts for a moment that our common genetic background has meaning has significance. I would not which we give to it, but which it gives to us most donna conceived people seem to want the option to know their donors identity. And in the u. K. David and others influence the government to change the law and end anonymity. Since 2005 kids have the right to know their donors identity when they reach 18. In canada, in 2004, we persuaded the government to do the same. When people find their fathers or they find their relatives, hes a tremendously important stories and i think theyre important for a reason. I think its a very basic yearning, but then the government changed his mind. The doctors told him thered be no more donors. And in the u. S. A. Well, anonymity has been standard in the sperm industry since the beginning of health, and i have a play with them since the start and everyone thought that the only way a guy would donate sperm as if he could be anonymous, turned up that wasnt true. Meet tim galaxy. Why did you decide to be identifiable . Curiosity, i supposed to start with with it at some point some portion of the kids would be interested in meeting me and i would be interested in getting them up. And so white of mom im actually picked, she tells me thats what she picked to him because his voice according sounded really like sweet. And that he said that he wanted to meet the kids she was use raising us as the thing. Okay. I never pretended like be like her parent because i wasnt that work right. I didnt take her to school everyday to tucker and at night that you and your brother are not the only biological offspring that tim has cracked. How many do you have was that ive met . Are 171717. 00 total. Me years jo. Another one of tims kids. I, me. Every summer, tim rents some cabins by a lake and spends a week with a bunch of his bio kids. And just like in my own family, tims offspring crossed paths before they knew they were related. I came in close contact with my siblings and didnt know their my like the guy that i worked with was on the same water polo team. I saw your boyfriend on my way if i had not with him or i probably would have met sawyer and not known she was my sister and danny went to the college. I lived on the campus of so i probably passed him out of all his in scamp. Oh, start 2 minutes from my house. All like, i think your brother, hes my brother. Good thing, mr. Gay. Yeah. Jim wanted to be found by his offspring. But california cry bank his sperm. Megan didnt want to help these rules that i and things i had to follow to try to get any information. And what was it like . I had the bottom line was they said they didnt know if they had my contact information, but they would try that. But you know, yeah, call me back and they didnt. And they, they never gave you teams information. Now even though he was supposed to be identifiable to you. Yeah. And basically they told me like, but i could not reach me. And so i called them up and said, relying, ive always kept you updated with my phone, my email and my spam mail address. And they chastised me for wasting their time, so it was clear to me they werent interested in making or facilitating that connection, even though all parties wanted it correct with really more and more donors are willing to be identified to their offspring once theyre adults. When the u. K ended anonymity, the number of sperm donors went up. Other countries have also entered the secrecy. Some u. S. Banks no longer accept new anonymous donors at all. But california driving the biggest in the u. S. Still has them. And theyve agreed to talk to me, but at the last minute they cancel. They say they dont want to be part of my personal journey. Anonymity means that a lot of babies can be produced from one man by, by a dad visa had maybe 600. But what if theres someone out there with an even bigger family . This is steve shelton. Hes a bodybuilder, a psychiatrist. And he used to be an anonymous sperm donor. And i was the freshman of medical school. Actually, the medical school for credit me to be a sperm dog. Yes, ive got started. Thats on. I mean, it did it help you financially and in medical school, you know, it actually did. And they paid 20. 00 a donation to very quickly. Theyve raised that 40 dollars and how many years did you do this . I guess it was a 17 years ill tunnel of how my schedule was fed twice a week, 17 years. But its not impossible. You could have a 1000 kids or more. I is asking about the numbers my head. I think its possible. How do you feel then . Well, i guess are there says run reality to i just cant imagine that ive got all these kids out there. So ive never really focused on what the numbers might be. I see i was the, the, what are god determined they might be, you know, over the years of thought about that sir, was there maybe some children out there in prayer, i would have caused blessing upon them, but i cant, theres not having met anybody. And so recently it just didnt really feel real. You know, so i met derek. Derek car, about a year ago actually. Yeah. How did you find a job . I just got on to several of the ne websites. The 1st thing that hit me was, was to contact him who is kind of why, what was this . Well, did you think might be for money . Well, you know, its everything. Florence theory has all that was going through my head. How do you refer to him on my biological father . My friend is become a really good friend and a friend my parents as well was using a sperm donor, a difficult decision to you, that it wasnt for me, but all at jam speak for sale a little bit, some, some what i want to say more the other pride thing, you know, you want it, you, it would be nice to have your own on related child. So as there was a bit of the loss of yes, yes. So bob, you decided to tell you on the truth very was having some medical issues that id never experienced or had run in janets family. And so that was probably the reason that we, we told eric so maybe he could do some research. And if you ever found out whos donor they had was, you know, that might help him give him some more insights into his medical issues. So may i ask what they were . I was having some allergy problems that made it difficult to swallow food at some point. And interestingly enough, that was, that was something that after i made the connection with steve you we kind of shared and some of the families had that had that problem over the christmas holidays. I actually told steve, i said, well, well thank you for making it possible for us to have derrick said, i think he turned out pretty well and im glad you report the the Donor Program lar loop. All the efforts that the medical community, sorry, went to to keep everybody divided wasnt actually that necessary perhaps. Right. And when bob shared this was my response question, is this tremendous . Bless me for one god showing me that my prayers. He but hundreds more might be too much of a blessing and still wants to find out how many he has. So hes going to talk to one of the doctors he sold sperm to i think there should be significant limits to how many children, any individual donor can asya have. That is the word when youre talking maybe hundreds of people thats, thats not good. I do feel theres something wrong about that number being somehow much higher than if it could be natural. This mass production, it makes you feel a bit like youve come of the production line of a factory. How many women could be impregnated by one man. And conceive how many thousands, 2000. Sure. Yes, i can see the problem. Yes. It is indeed very steven 0. Are you not getting why and this is the show us has never. Weve come to see the doctor at one of the places steve donated in louisville, is anxious to find out more about his hundreds of offspring. Inspired by wash san juan, happened upon me about a year ago, a testing mediconnect. Now hes, cuz hes who told her simulation thats prompted me to just ask questions. What actually is she provide career as a sperm donor. You know, all of this was done in a very anonymous fashion. All of parties were advised that the donor would not know who the couple was and vice versa. You know, the couples wanted the peace of mind to know that one day somebody is not going to come up and say, and thats my kid and i want my kid back kind of thing. So at that time, we only used medical students and we didnt want them looking over their shoulder for somebody that perhaps then got divorced and wanted to sue the donor for Child Support or Something Like that. With donor insemination. Some people dont want their child to know with utter disregard to an agreement. You know, like i give you permission to tell its popping out of the woodwork. Derek has talked about how important that connection is with his dad. And ultimately, if he gets to know me, hell get another dose of enrichment of his life meeting or dealing with people enriches your life. You dont think theres anything special about the genetic connection. I am not a psychologist. Okay. I would, i would say that you would have to study it to see what youre saying intuitively. Sounds good. When put to the test, it may or may not. Im not disagreeing, but im not fully agreeing with it either. When a person becomes an adult, there are some pretty good reasons that maybe they should know their family medical history. And so i might from my perspective, i think people should be allowed to know at least kind of at that point. So actually thats the question i have that. Are there any suckers that might indicate anything about how come from donations past the terms of practice . Caesar burse . The answer is no, no, we did our best for a long time to keep the records kept records in a safe even. I am trying to think if was oh, 7 november that we had a flood in this building which took out 2530 percent of the building including this whole suite. And we were out of the building for a well and, and lost some of that. Some of it may actually still exist that we still have put away and yet to come out. Sounds like one thing you would like to know for dr. Levine would be the number that would be nice to know. Yes. That that would take some doing. It would any possibility that steve could find out a bit more about and see if he wants to make the next week. We would have to chat about that one day over a stake in some bourbon or something till again. Okay, so yes, we will chat about it. I was taken some bourbon losing sperm donor records seems to happen a lot in this business. So ive gone to colorado to meet wendy kramer. Ive known wendy for a long time. Shes one of the sperm banks. Biggest critics. Focus nice for you. Oh yeah. Yeah. I mean, we were out hike long before dna testing, wendy and her donna conceived son, ryan started a website. It was called donor sibling registry. The, as our parents only know the anonymous donor by a number on the d, as our site offspring can use that number to find other children from the donor with the same number. Their half siblings and thousands of donors also sign on to match their offspring. Thats our tim, the donor and l. A found his these numbers are updated every night. And this is how many people leave matched. 17926. So we will head 18000 in february. And then 67188 people on the dsr. So thats parents dont or can see people children, the parents have posted and donors, donors, and sperm donors. Sometimes the donors find that the sperm banks have lied. Can you imagine youre this guy and you go, you know, i think the right thing to do would be to make myself available to those 10 kids i was told i might have out there. Yeah. And you come to the d. S. R and i know this because i hear from donors all the time who go. Okay, just a minute. I just went on your website and it says i have 35 kids. Thats impossible. I was promised 10. Yeah. Well right. Of course, this can only happen in a closed anonymous system, which wendy hates as much as i do. Donor can see if people are all too often told. You should be happy to be alive. You should be just happier parents want to do so much and its like for sure. But i also am a human being. I have an innate desire to know where i come from and who i come from. So you cant deny that either not with adopted people, but also not with Donor Conceived people. California cro bank has no idea how many have siblings ryan has because they have no accurate Record Keeping. Its preposterous. You cant promise limits when you dont have accurate records. Its impossible, you know, a cost money to have accurate Record Keeping a cost money to update medical records and to share medical information. It costs money to have the accurate Record Keeping that it would take to limit the number of kids per donor. So it takes some money to do all of that. And that there are a profit business. Theyre selling gammy, its it least in the you can australia, tetra, there is some regulation. Do you think that canada might progress to having sung him, but they get all their spare me from the u. S. Burbank, so what are they going to regulate california cry. Oh bank. I dont think so. Well, they could demand that the sperm be identifiable guy. Yeah. Let him try, sir. I just dont see it happening. So you see the way forward is basically people using the dna sides with the help of your website. Absolutely. Theres nothing else. Nobody else cares to step in and provide regulation or oversight. The sperm banks are big, theyre powerful, theyre wealthy. They have lobbyists in washington, they keep any and all regulation from happening. Anytime theres a regulation that gets proposed, they put the kibosh on it immediately. Its the fox watching the hen house. We cant change whats happened in the past, but now there is no, absolutely no excuse whatsoever for donors to insist on secrecy. And furthermore, there is no such thing as secrecy anymore. Everyone has the right not to be deliberately deceived or deliberately deprived of information about essential aspects of their personal history. The trouble is straight couples often dont tell their kids. So david, a lawyer is campaigning. First have birth certificates with the sperm or egg donors name as well as the parents. These accurate birth certificates would be available to aspirin once they become adults. And in many countries, there is a growing movement from the donor, conceived to end anonymity. Back in 2004, i was here in ottawa are arguing the same with the government refused. One of the employees who persuaded the government to preserve donna anonymity was dr. Hetty fry. I dr. Fry. Im very steven this, this to meet you. Nice to meet you. Thank you for doing the really appreciate something i can answer your questions or concern was that for many people who donated, they did not want people to know that they donated theyd donated for whatever reasons. But they didnt necessarily want to have someone coming in saying you are my father or you or whatever. When you decided to preserve the anonymity because some people might come and demanded much as to preserve anonymity. It is to protect the rights of the donor just as you protect the rights of the child, but they dont have that. We dont have a choice. We didnt have a choice and we were the ones who adopted from that true. Yes, and of course the jonah had a choice and the doing it could refuse to donate, in which case a lot of people would not have had access to doing a spoon. And so i dont see how anyone can suggest that only one group in a discussion should have their rights observe than the other should have known. The main reason was that you were afraid there would be no more daughters. And if, if, if we ended on him and one of the major reasons is just because people were very reluctant to come to an age in the 1st place. And many of them when he did so because he knew that their identity with it acted. We didnt want to dry up the number of doing this, but they dont dry up. When the u. K ended anonymity, the numbers dont actually went up. I would like to see a system where only donors who are, who are willing to be identified to their offspring. When the offspring it to be bold enough should be recruited and that has been shown to work. And if it does work, then why not do it in the future . Well then if you think you would like to see amendments, youve a for your canadian citizen to come up and ask, go, put our petitions, get a lot of people to sign on to that. I am asked and what no, but i, i will respond to people coming to me in with the petition and seeing a lot of us want this to happen. One person is not enough on it. I think it would be a good idea practically for, for the government of canada to get out ahead of this. There is no problem with that. I dont have a problem with people coming to do that. And, and again i and then i will wait and see what that evidence says and i make my decisions based on fair enough. Thank you are so some progress and i just start to fries, right . I have to come back again with thousands of us. In the meantime, im going back to london one last time. My new family loves a party. So ive gotten together to hear what they have to say about all this. Like any family you meet some people you really connect to way that the 1st person i met in england was david. We have we had we met early to shop and i clearly say we landed up in soho in a gable by the end of the evening. And i thought though, this guys, incredible, this is really fun. This is amazing. Then as you get to know, the people you know, realize hes not. I did not say that later. Then you realize that you like some people, but then you like others is just my family and thats the, thats the basic line. And same thing is, is 400 more others out. Its actually more 600. 00 or more women tests are all complete. Were going to be like one of the huge forest funguses, a fruitful chat with me. And shes only very recently, like in the last 2 years, i went on to some of these donor conceive st. Whatsapp groups and the facebook groups and, and, and i was really shocked, really shocked and upset to see the really young people talking about how they hadnt been told in a people in the twentys in told the family siblings, you know, always differently finding than the doctor was their dad men loans of them . I think he, jesus, i always was just asked cuz we were in this weird sort of initial phase where it was all new. Yeah. But its actually still going on, and that makes me really upset as really, people should know better. Now like maybe our parents didnt examples to those that are better, they should know and reality, the end of anonymity surely surely is going to cause pain for those people who who chose choose or chose to do something that was deep. Can private person for me that the real point is that we will have a right to our own narrative. We will have a right to her story. And that seems to me just to be incontrovertible. The, to be human, is to have a story. And to have a story, one must have a true story, just saying these, these kids, but they be better off, not knowing. Its both and for someone else to come in and say, but for the convenience of others, well just delete that. It is not clearly also all come up for it historically showed he was simply that donors would not come forward if the understanding was that they might be approved by the off to the abolition of anonymity. The number of registered sperm done was, went up there and then you will, the industry is making a lot of money out of it and its often quite disgusting actually. So id like to ask, what was flexible nieces and nephews, but we didnt have any reading uncles or aunts or anything like that. Im it, it is like, i think its great because im so young, but ive got a whole lot of time of people and family to be able to stay in contact with and to be able to meet if youre traveling across the globe and everything like that. We have a lot of culture. Yeah, yeah, exactly, with that and i think i mean on it, becky says in currently lane and then there is something, i mean a lot of people in the, in the job i do and with nice people like i get on. But there was something there was a connection on the honda guy that it was like in some ways ive known them all my life and i cannot describe it. And i would like to say like box i or i felt maybe saying forget barry in canada. He was, there was a sort of not a major female connection, but there was a connection that we barring that i felt relaxed. I spent the day with him. We had some quite good loss, i think. But i wouldnt have had that with any other, but i just picked up a lot of experience with i know what it is, but there is something there is a, there is a something last question. This is really last who looks like, who i talked with. I mean, while i was editing this film, several new siblings appeared on the dna sites. Berto, visas, descendants that we have identified now number a 137. And there are plenty more to come. Is a bit of a paradox. Its great to be part of this class, but i really hope that we are one of the last of the huge families produced by anonymous men. And that we can put an end to all the secrets and lies. Ah, i fax.
