A life saving gaze at on the worlds United Nation stands with them all. We know lofty ideals must be made real in peoples life. So lets develop Common Solutions to common problems. Grounded in goodwill. Trust in the ride share by every human being. Lets work as one, a coalition of the world as United Nations. Thank you. With United Nations general with, with the very powerful message warning us of a winter of discontent. If something is not done, deep structural reform needed in the way the world is structured and calling for a coalition of the world, lets talk to Richard Walker about this. Hes in the studio with us on following events. And in his poll is in new york, well cross to her in a moment, richard, 1st of all, what stood out to you . Well, i think its quite interesting and almost quite sad to, to track the kind of story of the speeches by antonio terrace opening, the Un General Assembly over the last few years. I was just looking kind of preparing for this today at some of the speeches that hes made in recent years. And it does feel like somebody whos kind of getting frustrated about constantly having to remind the world about just how badly things are going. And he began his speech today. No, we just missed the very beginning of it. I think its worth repeating a little bit of what he said, right at the beginning. Our world is in big trouble. That was his 1st line. But if you go back to last year, i am here to sound the alarm. The world must wake up, the previous year, people are hurting the previous year. We are living in a world of disquiet. You get the impression of this man who stands here every september, addressing the world, trying to sort of shake every one awake. But with every successive year, the situation is got even worse, of course, this year now with a very, very serious war going on. Lets go over to it as poll, who said by force ness, youll there in new york city or some of the, the atmosphere of that meeting there at that you went for us. Well, you know, it comes at a time when we not only have seen the floods in park is sun, but also the drought in the United States. We see like massive rainfalls all over the world in puerto rico, which is not so far away. We just heard the news this morning, thats thousands of people i have lost their life. So this is kind of the situation here in the United States and for, for that reason, it comes very timely that a good terrorist really stresses not only the war and ukraine and, and other a like a military challenges, but also the climate crisis. And as richer jazz said, he puts that in the center. He finds really strong words like we are in a suicidal war against nature. And we are having a random room with the devil. So this is really, this was really kind of in the core of his speech and it comes as in a moment where at least the United States states. But im also sure many other parts of the world are really aware of the kind of crisis. He had such a long list of countries in, in crises there for us. And mentioned that one of todays poorest commodities is hope that hope and action is needed. But in as what action exactly are we going to see . That was quite interesting. I mean, he painted really a very dark picture of the state of the world. And as richard just said, he does it over years and years, but hes not giving in hope, it was a pledge to stand together to support those who are the most vulnerable. Hes talked a lot about women and girls who talked about the poor countries. We suffer again the most from raising food prices. He talks about the famine, like already people are dying because they dont have enough to eat and this will get even worse. So he really call for action. Hes asking for more financial support, but also for structural support in those countries which are still developing democratic structures. Richard, tell me a little bit more about the financial side of things they talked about as the g stimulus of developing countries about debt relief that swaps lending criteria and expanding liquidity. Yeah. Holding on the International Monetary fund and said, yanks around the. Yeah, i mean he had a host of points around this and just saying that hes essentially calling for the g 20 company countries, the biggest economy, which were going to be gathering in indonesia lacy, this year, a to launch what he called an s t g stimulus now s t g means the Sustainable Development goals and these, these goals, which was set out by the United Nation several years ago, a set of i think, 17 goals to try to measure a development that is taking place on sustainable basis around the world to try to, to lift living status in the developing world. And that being one is the last couple of years. Thats whats called the Human Development index of the sort of the measured state of Human Development in the last couple of years has have setbacks for the 1st time. Really, in a very long time, to really kind of like a rallying cry to point out that, you know, for all the crises such as ukraine going on at the moment. The world needs to focus on this big picture goal of development for the countries that have been left behind by development in recent decades because good terror said there are more poor, there are more hungry things are going backwards. He talked about deep structural reform being needed because todays system is created by rich countries to benefit those rich country. Yes. So what then . The same question to we ness. What, what has to change . What will change . What can you, when do richard . Well, pretty much everything, not those. Sorry, sorry, i was asking richard, i just think ok. Yeah. Yeah. Well, i mean, hes calling for quite significant structural reforms, but i think in terms of you ask, what can the United Nations do . I suppose it part of the frustration that you hear from good terrorist, i think is, is the very limits of his role. The fact that, you know, if he had a magic wand, he would want to change these things. So, you know, his position becomes a kind of a bully pulpit, and i think i was in new york last year and heard his speech at that time and really felt a mansion for mounting frustration then. And i feel its, its kind of just increasing even further. And i think one of the other sentences that really stuck out in his speech was that we are grid locked in, colossal global dysfunction. And his analysis is pretty well that theres the division geopolitically that you see taking place in the world between the United States and the west, broadly speaking, and russia and china and some developing countries. Broadly speaking, on the other side is really crippling the wealth in its ability to address some of these issues that were talking about, whether its climate change, whether its these development issues, whether its finance and so on. And yeah, i think thats what we see from him every years trying to use his bully pulpit to sort of shake the world awake. The question is, will anyone really be listening . Thats a very good question is, can i bring you back in . If youre still there, because the terrorists that we need a coalition of the world, but where you are at the u. N. A, i believe russia and china were absent. That is true, and that is a big problem definitely. But its also a kind of understandable, isnt it . So i think what matters is to understand that here at the end this is also really a place for many World Leaders to meet with each other. So its not only important what is going in here in the building right behind me, but also its important to look a little close at all these bilateral meeting. So, for example, the new Prime Minister of, of great britain, this trust will meet my call in a couple of hours. She will meet President Joe Biden for the 1st time tomorrow. Theyre going to talk about possible u. K. U as a trade agreement. And the importance of kind of a breaks it in this whole discussion and what is important for us is deutsche of ella. I think that our german chancellor will be meeting president ottawa and the president of turkey who just gave an interview to an american radio station. Saying that he expects russia to give back the occupied territories such as a crimea, which is kind of interesting because aragon just kind of into last week that he is aiming for closer trade relationship ships with china and russian. These to come to russia. These 2 countries you just have mentioned, so there is a lot going on around a big assembly hall. I Washington Bureau chief in s pole in new york city at the u. N.
