Adapting to their new reality. Im sumi so much going to thank you for joining us on d. W. News asia today now it was a story a that captured the worlds attention on june 23rd of last year 12 boys from a Youth Soccer Team decided to explore a cave with their coach now the group entered the town along that cave in thailands northernmost province chon ry but a shortly after entering heavy rains caused floodwaters to rise and the boys and their coach they were trapped now early efforts to find the boys failed but as International Media picked up the story the search team grew to include experts from around the world and on july 2nd 2 pritish divers found all the boys and the coaches. Starving but still alive around 4 kilometers from the caves mouth now came the task of bringing the group back to safety the rescue involved thousands of personnel and countless acts of courage one diver lost his life while bringing oxygen tanks to the strand it soccer team finally more than 2 weeks after their ordeal began the boys and their coach they were rescued they were a celebrated as National Heroes theyve returned to the cave a year later to thank those who helped them make their escape. Right giving thanks for the ultimate gift of their lives the 12 boys and their coach other arms and a buddhist ceremony and gather a symbolic feast for cape spirits. Each boy has his own memory of the ordeal. For some its on their minds every day. This was the moment they were discovered just over a year ago. But their survival still tends to by tragedy this tiny the seal diver died during the rescue operation. Honored by the team for giving his life to save their lives. I want to say thank you thank you very much to sergeant some grown up without him we might not be alive today. And he wont be soon forgotten a statue has been erected in his memory. I still have him in my heart all the time i feel like this to walk together. Over the weekend thousands came to a marathon near the rescue site running in the footsteps of their National Heroes. And a reunion of sorts for a team of divers who helped rescue the soccer team you know i wouldnt say that 4 or 5 survive the way that it was not many tours you could have survived the way they did so we have to respect them for that. And their escape from the depths of tom long cave a Daring Rescue that had the whole world rooting for a miracle. And a year later people in thailand are remembering that america he gave us Charlotte Shelton pill isnt she and right following the story for us and she joins us hi charlotte good to see you so how have people been remembering what happened a year ago. Seanie hi yes the real highlight today has been getting the opportunity to see those 12 boys and that coach they held a press conference here at the cave site earlier today and it really was an insight into how the boys are doing and how theyve responded to what was clearly a hugely traumatic ordeal for them now their privacy has been very strictly guarded so its extremely exciting to see a number of them here at the site talking to was one of the really interesting things that they said is that they actually 2 of them want to become navy seals themselves that is a mark of respect for the tight diver who lost his life jaring that rescue hes commemorated just behind me now it wasnt just the press conference that the type ways were taking part in that was also a religious ceremony here at the cave buddhist ceremony monks that were blessing the boys and asking that their lives be long and happy so that was extremely nice to see that was a ceremony that took several hours and then later on the boys went home to play football with some of the medics who treated them in hospital in a friendly games they really has been. Quite a lively day today here at the cave this is actually one day on the anniversary of the boys going into the cave that was yesterday that anniversary took place so more vents hey that was a fun run that was a bike ride so its been a very Lively Experience in charlotte what do you think the story of their skate this miracle has resonated with so many people not only in thailand but also beyond. Well has to be remembered seeing me that people here in thailand this really was a Success Story a lot of the divers that weve spoken to said that they didnt think for a long period of time for weeks in fact that the boys were going to be pulled out alive they said they thought it was going to be a recovery rather than a rescue mission so this really is considered a miracle here among the locals and as such this is become a Tourist Center a lot of people wanting to use this site to commemorate the heroism of a lot of the divers a lot of the cave ins who was involved in this rescue in fact one of the officials a local officials here said in high season up to 2000 people coming here to get a taste of the ordeal and check out check out the site thats despite the fact that the cave itself is actually close we dont know yet whether it will open but there is some talk about it becoming a Visitors Center at some points they seem if you wanted to drop by you might in fact at some point be able to take a tour of the cave itself. Now to the conflict in afghanistan the United States and representatives from the taliban will hold fresh peace talks this weekend in qatar it will be the 7th round of negotiations between the 2 sides the goal is to end afghanistan 17 year war but its an uphill battle afghanistans government isnt involved in the talks and on the ground violence is surging again as the taliban has pressed on with its insurgency the United Nations says nearly 4000 civilians were killed in afghanistan last year the deadliest year yet for civilians the violence has torn apart communities and left deep scars it has also left a number of land mines and unexploded mortars on the ground and all too often theyre found by children we need a family now that was devastated by an explosion one year ago. No child should bear. 10 children from the same family were on their way to school when they spotted a bomb on the ground a common sight in afghanistan. The device went off 3 children were killed. 7 survived but they lost at least one limb each. More than a year later they are struggling to adapt. The bloody demo of it will the day when the blast took place so it was a bad day. But if i dont i thought. I saw my brothers and sisters soaked in blood lying on the ground their mob a good water because my entire family was destroyed as. Well. The children are tutored at home but sometimes they have to go to school for exams its not an easy journey. Listers form where the artificial limbs rub their skin a painful reminder of their new reality. Marred my cue when the explosion took place i tried to stand up and go home but when i tried to walk i noticed that i didnt have my leg i know. This was a year ago after the blast the changed everything their story the reminder of the war that still rages on even though the taliban are in negotiations with the us for some sort of peace settlement. A resolution seems far off the decades of conflict have left the nation strewn with landmines and other deadly munitions. The u. N. Says more than 900 children were killed in 2016. Another 7000 were wounded. But if peace comes will be very happy theyll be no problems and everyone will. During that business without any tension even if we have a disability at least well have security and pace every day theres no im still fighting and its my life terrible but in mine you have the Afghan Government and the taliban must sit together and agree on piece of the children do not get killed ok disabled in this wall. Oh my lad and i won. And though her childhood was taken away robbia hopes that other children in afghanistan can still enjoy somewhat of a normal life.
