Seventy two mass shooting in Northern Ireland and one of the worst episodes of the Northern Ireland conflict british troops gunned down civilians in what became known as the bloody sunday massacre and a winding sex scandal grips the south koreas Music Industry k. Pop star face Police Questioning after admitting that they shared that nonconsensual for not worth. Im burnt off to our viewers on p. B. S. In the United States and all around the world welcome well tonight perhaps the answer to briggs it is more time british lawmakers have voted in favor of delaying the countrys departure from the European Union by at least three months the government motion passed today by four hundred twelve votes to two hundred to all twenty seven other e. U. Member states will still need to agree to the delay the Prime Minister now plans to have another go. Were getting the deal that she agreed with through parliament that will be in a vote next week if m. P. s back that deal the government will request a three month extension if they reject it one then will try to seek a longer extension. Or lets take the story now to our correspondent Barbara Faisal she joins us from outside the houses of parliament in london good evening to you barbara so far weve had three nights of votes and was minister now it looks like were going to try to get more is there any proof that more time is going to be the fix for the bricks in chaos. And who of course not brant but its just the latest news from the great Breakfast Show ongoing in london years since the beginning of the week and something i can promise going to be continued next week stay with us because our next tuesday of what will happen now is reason may will bring that was drawled deal thanks to parliament for the third time after having been resignedly beaten twice once this week such memories are short so she will try again and at the same time she promised that this is what the news is she promised that she would go afterwards to play to the European Council to the other twenty Seven Members off the European Union and say please can we have a short delay us three mines that is if she gets the deal through if she doesnt get the deal through yes then were going to let me on shot at waters because then shes going to us all for what nine months a year two years nobody knows who barbara kurtley if im wrong but the e. U. Was looking at this and they want proof that more time will actually fix this problem and there isnt proof theres no breaks a deal is there. There is no proof of course if she gets the deal through on tuesday next tuesday then of course things will be relatively easy for her then she can go to brussels and say listen it was difficult but i managed to do it in the end look at this this is like a majority in parliament for the deal please give me three months to get the laws and the legal side sorted ill change whatever loose ends are out there or maybe she even if she only needs two months whatever that will be the easy side but if she loses again next week then nobody knows what will happen for it to be delayed indefinitely britain will probably have to participate in the european elections in may and so it is completely open its completely up in the air and of course itll be definitely the end of her career because what happened tonight are ready with this prolongation was this extension is that one hundred eighty eight of her own parliamentarians voted against her so she got this extension vote with the votes of the opposition and her position that has already weak that is already in shreds is weakened even further barbara people around the world there will probably be scratching their heads and asking if if the brakes a deal that theresa may go she has already been rejected by Parliament Twice how can it be presented for a third time next week and how can anyone expect it to pass. Maybe three times to keep current however what she is really doing is shes putting the gun up to the heads of her hard line for exit years in her own party and telling them ok folks now look at this you can get rex it was a short extension thats not too painful you dont want to look too painful if you vote for the deal if you finally sort of jump your shadow and vote for the deal however if youre not going to do that then we lose we will go on. Talking about breaks that fall months and months and maybe years and years to come it might never have met all so what would you rather have that is just im sure blackmail whole effort it might work it might work yes. But as you said last night maybe weve reached peak briggs and you know Barbara Hazel on the story for us tonight in london barbara thank you. And for more on this now im joined here at the big table by derek scully he is the berlin correspondent for the irish times its good to have you on the show so what do you make of the possibility that next week the parliament is going to be asked a third time to vote on the brics a plan that its already rejected twice i know im sort of reminded of those horror films i used to overdose on as a teenager you know the monster isnt quite dead just so you turn away the monster gets up in the break the monstrous coming out for a third time with recently is kind of hoping on like a horror film that actually things will usually the sequels does improve shes hoping the quality of the vote will go in her favor and she can go to brussels in a weeks time and say yes theres still opposed but the numbers opposed to my dealer dropping can you do anything for me the u. S. Said no were not reopening the deal so its up to finding some sort of legal way or legal trickery to bring at least some of the doubters on the side the people in Northern Ireland who are starting to speak and sort of move more conciliatory language and they have the past theyve really oppose anything that would sort of cut them off as they see it from the rest of the u. K. And i think the break the tears the heartbreak the tears in london they just dont want any of this they just want to get out but maybe the Northern Irish can be brought on side they we might see that in trees and they can say look were making were getting there its very very slow but were getting there the people in europe is that look we need a credible justification for an extension so she has to find something that looks credible or is window dressing there was a need to because the media what does she do shes good as they were you heres the plan thats already been rejected twice but you know third times the charm thats what shes going to have to tell brussels this is in german hope dies last and then it dies but yeah i mean what can she do at this stage she is just trying to get something across lines something anything and shes looking to seize or absolutely anything left that the European Union can do for resolution on the irish border that backstop the whole dilemma that has been in the center of the brics that chaos knell for more than two years that has been resolved no but i mean. Im from arlen im in the r. s said into this and sixteen do you want to resort is that first because this is going to be really tricky and it was pushed back and pushed back and pushed back. And thats where we find ourselves now i mean this is a shot in florida we do not want this to be a problem we do not want to be in the news we do not want to stop britain seeking a bright new hopeful future outside of the European Union but as our politicians an arm of said we believe that peace is more important than politics and we this is our island and we have had twenty years of peace and its just the risk the chance the slightest chance that this could be a provocation border controls or anything that looks like that so thats why they want the status quo in stone and thats what the british have never really had on the radar as before and thats starting to come back and haunt us now if its a yes or no will the e. U. Agreed to a three month delay after one thousand days whats three more months just a good way to look at it with the irish times we appreciate your insights thank you. Well heres some of the other stories now that are making headlines around the world hungarys Prime Minister has asked the leaders of the european parliaments conservative grouping to reconsider their proposal to expel them his own Political Party in his letter to the European Peoples Party Victor Orbach apologized for causing offensive feelings or insults with his anti even anti immigrant Billboard Campaign despite this mr obama said that he would not change his political positions especially on immigration authorities in slovakia have charged a multimillionaire businessman with ordering the murder of an investigative journalist and his fiance last february. Who owns a Dozen Companies has been in custody since june on suspicion of fraud and of the shooting death of young black and martina close near over in their home shocked the nation it also led to public protests brazilians have paid tribute to the black rights activist mario franco who was gunned down a year ago today in downtown Rio De Janeiro the anniversary comes in a week that has seen the arrest of two former Police Officers in connection with the counselors murder its also been revealed the countrys new far right president president wilson r. O. Knows one of the suspects. Now to the United States the senate has voted to terminate president Trumps National Emergency Declaration over the situation on the border with mexico the final vote was fifty nine to forty one with twelve of trumps own republicans crossing party lines to join the democrats in rebuking the president tried his pledge to veto this resolution it would be his first veto he declared the emergency access billions of dollars in funding for a border war with mexico which he says is urgently needed. Our for more on this lets go to washington now our very own Helen Humphrey is on the story for us tonight good evening to you helen and so i mean it is is it looks bad for truong how bad of a setback is it for his wall project brant i would say that its a setback that the president himself knew was coming when he declared this National Emergency on the lawn of the white house a matter of weeks ago he said that he anticipated resistance that he anticipated this to go through the court system what is a setback for the president is the number of republican senators who essentially broke ranks we saw twelve senate says that wasnt enough though to rule out the possibility of a veto when the president says that he will veto and about twenty minutes ago i did just see a tweet from the president just in capital letters just saying the word veto so what we can expect now is this to go through the legal system potentially all the way up to the Supremes Court itll be really interesting that because this is about the separation of powers but at the same time the new chief Justice Brett kavanaugh has said that he is in favor of an expansion in president ial power as at the same time of course this border wall is a key promise from trumps president ial Campaign Today six hundred days to go until the twenty twenty a leg and he knows that this is something he has to do to deliver on. For the past two years weve talked to bill drum support in the Republican Party being almost monolithic are we seeing now the breakdown of trumps clout among republicans. This is interesting because the white house had reckoned that it could limit the number of quote unquote defectors to around a handful ten today we saw twelve some republican senators have been very vocal about this for weeks now Susan Collins for example mitt Romney Marco Rubio but at the same time we do know that the president does keep something akin to i dont know a list of whos been naughty whos been nice and for example we did see senator thom tillis who actually or fit an op ed in the Washington Post last week saying he was so outraged about this declaration of a National Emergency and yet today he did not break ranks he knows that hes got a key primary election coming up which will be difficult so although we did see some republicans break ranks still there is you know some concern perhaps about how the president would view such a move you know its a very good point how the whole thing on the story for us in washington helen i think you go on to venezuela now a german journalist there is being held in prison in the midst of a National Power struggle electricity failures and Food Shortages the freelancer believed six has been under arrest without charge since november and he is now on a Hunger Strike germany has reduced his diplomatic staff in the country and the journalist family says that they fear that billions being forgot. Us. Journalist billy six before hes a wrist reporting on his you tube channel about the rising cost of living in venezuela thirty two year old german has been imprisoned in caracas since november last year accused of espionage rebellion and violence back home his parents are demanding the German Government do more to secure his release. Letters to the seven hundred nine members of the German Parliament only about thirty five have replied to half of those said they thought the German Foreign office and the embassy were doing a good job. So. Six has worked for right wing publications and his reports show his political leanings his parents have found support from the far right. Party other International Journalists are also imprisoned in venezuela but the f. T. C. Says. Germany the colombian and spanish governments have demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the journalists. Because thats the germans have not done so. Reporters without borders says its concerned about the journalists well being. To ation in venezuela is very unstable basically two rival president s. German ambassador has had to leave the country and we dont have hope that this situation will change anytime soon. And we know of no valid charges that have been brought against him. Without charges he should be released immediately if. The German Foreign office says it has recently visited billy six in prison. His parents continue to campaign for his freedom. Well prosecutors in Northern Ireland have charged a former british soldier for his part in the bloody sunday massacre forty seven years ago january thirtieth one thousand nine hundred seventy two british troops fired on an armed protesters in london derry then covered up what had happened thirteen people died in what became one of the worst episodes of the Northern Irish troubles a families of the victims they are still searching for justice. Families and supporters of the bloody sunday victims marched the head of the decision on charges against former british soldiers then the Public Prosecutor made the announcement one person would be charged and decision has been taken to prosecute one former soldier soldier af. For the murder of james ray on for the murder of william mckinney. Charges will also be brought for the attempted murder of joseph rated michael quinn. Patrick odonnell. On sunday january thirtieth one thousand nine hundred seventy two British Army Paratroopers opened fire on people protesting britains detention of suspected irish nationalists in a mainly catholic neighborhood of londonderry killing thirteen and wounding fifteen thirty eight years later a government inquiry determined that the paratroopers fired without warning and none of the victims had been armed or posed a threat. Victims family said they were disappointed that after forty seven years only one soldier was being charged you know the Public Prosecution service of a long long time to consider the evidence and we believe the evidence that theyre going to. Slip by. Basically. We believe and weve always believed that the evidence is there to convict its an every soldier who murders. Only stretch. Some Army Veterans who served in Northern Ireland assailed the decision to bring charges against a soldier f. Think its appalling absolutely appalling that after all these years the bring these charges up. On the soldiers just doing their jobs its a very difficult job and in a war like situation youve got to make it split second decisions. Under very trying to circumstances bloody sunday was one of the darkest days of the Northern Ireland conflict. Whether this trial will bring anything like closure is an open question. If more on this im joined by brian dooley Senior Advisor at the in geo human rights first in an expert on civil rights in Northern Ireland its good to have you on the show brian i mean were talking about criminal charges coming forty seven years after the massacre is this just is better late than never or are we looking at a new attempt to deliver justice in whether or not. Well that justice has been delayed for so long that you have to say really for most of those families and most of the people who survived being shot just this is largely denied and youve heard the disappointment from many of the families but thats not to undermine the massive achievement rating which the families have managed to secure in getting at least one prosecution i mean really i. E. Years ago i full independent investigation came to the conclusion but those who had been shot had all been armed and posed no threat and the logical extension of that was well if they were shot and they were posing a threat to the soldiers should the soldiers be prosecuted its taken i. E. Is to come to this day and it looks like only one soldier will be prosecuted so i heard the families today talk about this being a bittersweet day being you know both a mix of achievement and disappointment but the families i think of reacted in a very restrained and dignified way saying that justice for one family is justice for all of them so on the principle of will all the soldiers get away with it well well have to wait for the verdict to the trial but it certainly looks like now theres a genuine attempt to convict at least one as on the stand that piece decision can be appealed so the families are going to look to make the director of Public Prosecutions. Part of Prosecution Service look again to see if they might widen that to the charge more so because its a big moment in the history of the irish troubles that i yeah and i think the fact that were talking about just one soldier it does on the outside it does seem troubling because it could be perceived as token justice here and not an attempt really its a fine of the perpetrators to bring them to justice but from what im hearing from you do you get the sense that this will continue and more people will be charged because obviously there had to be more than one soldier who was you know who could possibly be a suspect right. Right so seventeen soldiers under consideration. Seventeen soldiers who were there that day who apparently played some part in what happened and who are still alive today under consideration and so its a disappointment only one of those were charged i think if we if you will from what i heard from the lawyers and those close to the families in the last few days they were hoping that the trail for a more my act that might be enough evidence to push charges against those one clearly isnt enough although you know for the families and for the survivors and for the community i mean the convictions they go beyond those people who were killed and shot i mean the damage done to the community did damage them to Northern Ireland. So its really a measurable but yeah and one isnt enough they might be more likely to be more prosecutions old former british soldiers in other cases but again i wouldnt i wouldnt want to depict this is as any sort of failure by this new Long Campaign by the families and the survivors really to have won a big victory. In securing what would have been unimaginable forty five forty seven years ago and get in a british soldier charged with murder you find with the n. G. O. S human rights first helping us understand a complicated story that has a fifty almost fifty year history as well fran thank you thank you well south koreas k. Over the first time in thirteen years there will be no german clubs in the Champions League quarter finals byron munich dortmund and shaka all crashed out english clubs in the round of sixteen its raised questions about whether Bundesliga Clubs have what it takes to compete. Twenty thirteen barring munich and brasil dortmund faced off in an old german Champions League final six years later not one Bundesliga Club will compete in the quarterfinals its been a gradual decline and one which has many wondering if german clubs can remain competitive at the highest level. Justice and the fact she didnt achieve what i had in mind was certainly also off fault and well but above all its due to liverpool who bucks the sand attacked early and we werent able to break free this ng of his mistress thats why we didnt make it so we didnt deserve to win well finish for the incident. Byron were surprisingly toothless at home in their second leg clash against liverpool but theyve won six straight bundesliga titles highlighting the lack of world class opponents they face in germany furthermore the bundesliga lacks the financial clout of top european clubs but its a time to panic. Both biron and dortmund during transitional phases under new coaches who are rebuilding their teams with promising young talent dortmund midfielder Thomas Delaney believes the future is bright despite day for nail aggregate loss to tottenham. As far as i see it its still comparable teams in the way we want to play football and the biggest difference may be that tottenham this is three years ahead of us as a team theyve been together for a long period that we yeah we also want to add more to keep the ball squad and we have to play a set that will grow and we will be a bit a team. Money certainly talks but with time and Good Management its still possible that blondeness league clubs can return to the top of european football.
