Necting with a couple of stories were doing whether here or at home. The culture of rape keeps coming back up, in our military, local high schools or now in india. We wanted to cover that. Anna is here to give us some of the stories. We start in india. Oftentimes when we talk about rape abroad, we talk the severe injustice. There is injustice in the United States, as well. Lets start with india. A 23yearold woman was brutally raped again and again on a bus for hours and then tossed on the side of the road. Now, five people have been charged with rape, and murder in this case, because she died from severe internal injuries. We have more. Lets take a look. The demand for justice is familiar now. The sign holding a mock funeral for the victim of the december 16 gaining rape case, the Tipping Point for a country which largely ignored crimes against women. Rape is the Fastest Growing crime in india according to National CrimeRecords Bureau data. A rape trial can take up to nine years. The government appears to have given in to pressure from the streets to set a fast track course and speed up a criminal case which has captured the nations attention. Cenk nine years for a rape trial . This is what happens and so some degree, im glad theyre out in the streets to a large degree. If you dont have just the court system, people are going to try to look for justice elsewhere. Thats why youve got to have adjusts system functioning. You need people to take to the the streets to bring awareness to a severe problem in society and this is a problem. You have politicians now calling for castration for people found guilty of rape. Cenk i wish they wouldnt jump from one extreme to another. Too extreme. Yes agree with the Death Penalty in the United States, i certainly dont want it abroad. A lot of times there are mistakes in the Justice System and dont want innocent people dying as a result. Its important to reflect here. We also have injustice when it comes to rape, which is why anonymous is getting involved to draw attention to a rape that happened in ohio. A 16yearold girl went to a party where Football Players were doing underage drinking. She participated in underaged drinking and allegedly someone had put a date rape drug in one of her drinks and she was unconscious. After that happened, Football Players and students from the school raped her multiple times literally took her from one party to another and continued to rape her. Its a disgusting story because of the fact that only two of the Football Players faced any charges. At first they were going to be tried as duties and then it got changed to juvenile instead. They will be charged at juveniles. The whole reason this is happening is because the town is very much in favor of the Football Team and they dont want to face consequences. Cenk how sick a culture do we have that we protect a Football Team instead of our own daughters. In a lot of ways its the same thing in india and here. This is ridiculous. When you hear the details of the case and what these guys did to her and the sod my and all the different things, it makes you sick in your stomach and then to get lenient treatment im glad anonymous put a light on it. I know anonymous faces criticism because of getting involved, but in this case, anonymous is doing excellent work. One of the students or foamer students michael nodonos was apparently involved in this rape because anonymous leaked video of him talking about it and confessing to the rape. Lets take a look. How do you feel on a dead girl . Are you serious . [ laughter ] im attached. [ laughter ] shes better than a door mat. They peed on her. [ laughter ] come on. Were going. Right now what theyre doing, theyre trying to help a dead girl. Thats like trying to help wood turn into stone. Thats like rape. It is rape. Did you do it . They raped her. He raped her harder than that guy raped marcellus wallace. What if she was pregnant and gave birth to a dead baby . You know, cenk, later he talks about how it wouldnt be his own daughter. He basically has no remorse over what happened. Cenk no, just that one minute was Crystal Clear it turns my stomach every time i see that tape. All right, in you were going to bring in an expert, the director of peace over violence, and patty, look, what is the thing that connects all these different cases. We got the military rape situation, as well. What allows people to be on tape like this and so brazen . Theres an enormous amount of education that has to happen all over the world not just in the United States, obviously in india, the congo, south africa, our own military where there is an extraordinary amount of rape by our military against our own military. I think the most compelling thing to think about is the status of women and how women and girls are thought about how theyre treated in our own neighborhoods and in countries around the world. If its ok to demean a woman in any way then the next thing its ok to rape them. And i think it has to do with accountability, as well. These kids in steubenville called themselves the rape crew out in the open and it seems there are not consequences. In the military, there was an issue of consequences. In india, nine years for a trial. Lack of consequences. I think will see got to be consequences now. Violence against women act amazingly did not pass. The House Republicans blocked it recently, because they said wait a minute, wait a minute, we were in favor of the original, but now youre trying to protect native american women and lbgt well and undocumented aliens. Why are they different . A woman in brooklyn, in so you had l. A. , new delhi now is it different what it comes to being abused in this way . Cenk the native american aspect, why are they stuck on it . Why shouldnt they get as much protection . That is a terrific question. I would love to oh get a logical answer from someone. What this added dimension of the act was allowing is for the transcribes to have their own traditional, their own court take care of the situation and prosecute if the person who is the abuser or the rapist or the offender is somehow connected to the tribe either they work on tribal land or they are married or they are in a relationship with the victim. And that has been a i guess giving oh i think it has to do with some idea of jurisdiction, but it doesnt really make sense. Look, sometimes the rape cases that involve native american women in this country take just as long as they do in india. We should be up in arms over that. Weve got to resolve this right away. I think men getting involved is the key. I was heartened to see how many men were protesting in new delhi. We need to have more men engaged in our own country and around the world to solve this problem. All right patty anna, thank you. Cenk when we come back remember how all those c. E. O. S were eager to get this fiscal cliff deal done . Why were they so eager . Im going to tell you when we come back. Their message six enough, dont go there. Some of the nations top c. E. O. S urging washington to avoid the socalled fiscal cliff. Cenk now everybodys talking about how people making over 450,000, should have been 250,000, people making over 450,000 are paying more taxes. The tax increase not getting attention is the payroll tax. That of course hits us all. That was the payroll tax cut was taken away. How much does that affect us . You are paying an extra 80 a month, almost a thousand dollars a year. That only affects 160 million of us. Now, meanwhile, you are not going to be surprised to find out turns out some corporations got a tax break a tax cut, not a tax increase in this deal. Stay with me. Of course that might begin to explain why those c. E. O. S at the white house the other day were so incredibly cooperative with the government. Some of the nations top c. E. O. S urging washington to avoid the fiscal cliff. They were meeting with president obama. I think youll start to see the president exercise some more leadership here and be more out front on everything, getting across that point about how we need to work together. The business round table, a lobbying group of the countries c. E. O. s began running print radio and web spots for democrats and republicans to set aside their differences. Why do they want to raise taxes a little bit for the top bracket . Because in the deal, it turns out, they were given an incredible tax break in so many areas. Led me start small. Nascar lobbied, 300,000 worth and International Speedway corporation spent 1. 1 million. The loophole they got in return gives them 141 million through 2007. You might spend 1. 1 million too if you would get that back. Hollywood, huge donor to the Democratic Party got a loophole, 150 million worth. Give a little bit of money to the democratics, you get a lot more money back. Usually to the republicans, but obviously it works for both parties. Again, both parties agreed that there should be a pass through exemption applying to a small amount of companies. That sounds technical. How much was that worth . 1. 5 billion. Thats 1. 5 billion out of our pockets and into the pockets of some of those top corporations in america. Gee, i wonder why the c. E. O. S were so eager to get a deal done . They were about to get 1. 5 billion in their pocket. Were not done yet. Then youve got the tiffining exemption. That sounds very technical, as well. This only applies to 20 companies. You know what kind of a tax break they got . 11. 2 billion, just for two years. 11. 2 billion. Right out of our pockets and into their pockets. Thats why they were ecstatic about this deal. Oh yeah, are we not merciful, well let you raise the top bracket just a tiny bit. Give me that 11 billion bribe heres your donation to the republican and Democratic Party. Thats how were getting robbed day in and day out. Meanwhile, the c. E. O. Of Goldman Sachs at the same time was going out there saying no, no, no. You got to share the pain. Going to have to undoubtedly do something to lower peoples expectations, the entitlements and what people think that theyre going to get because theyre not going to get it. Look at this smug guy. You got to lower your expectations. Know your role. At Goldman Sachs lowering their expectations . No, they raised them. Did they get a goody in this . Of course they did, 1. 6 billion worth of taxfree financing for the socalled york liberty because they happen to oh be building a giant building. Pain for us, 1. 6 billion for them. If you allow legalized bribery this is the result you get. Weve got to get the money out of politics. Ill tell you were working on that wolfpack. Com. Fight back. When we come back, well talk about how different the Democratic Party and politics is and civility is in washington between when he was working for mcgovern and kennedy and it is to now. Dont miss that. Im sitting there smoking a cigarette and drinking a merlot and heres the president of the United States drinking ice tea and chomping on cicorettes. Like mango jalapeno shrimp and parmesan crunch shrimp. Two delicious shrimp selections on one plate all with salad and unlimited cheddar bay biscuits. 30 shrimp, just 11. 99 for a limited time. Wow, thats a lot of shrimp. Im ryon stewart im the ultimate shrimp lover, and i sea food differently. Cenk senator Robert Francis kennedy died at 1 44 a. M. Today june 6, 1968. With senator kennedy at the time of his death were his wife, his sisters, mrs. Steven smith miss Patricia Lawford brotherinlaw mr. Steven smith, his sister in law mrs. John f. Kennedy. He was 42 years old. Cenk and that is frank making an announcement, an important moment in history the press secretary for bobby kennedy, one of the first heads of National Public radio served at gorge mcgoverns Campaign Manager and happens to be the father of ben. Frank, great to have you here. Part of the reason we wanted to talk to you is to get a sense of perspective on our politics. It seems that its very divisive now, much more partisan. Is that true . It is, but we have to understand, its not the institution that has changed. Its the Republican Party that has done that to the institution. We never had any resemblance in either plyical party to the tea party and they now run the Republican Party. So lets move the whole political structure to the right, but it hasnt affected the democrats very much. And the media has gone with them. The media says congress cant do anything. Its not congresss fault. Its the republicans fault. Cenk thats interesting. Back in the days that youre running the governments campaign and with r. F. K. , thats what the media was super objective and always call it 5050. Is that no the true, do you think the media called out reality a lot better back then . No, i think politics was much more convivial much more willingness to accomplish something by perhaps giving up a Little Something you wanted and hoping the other side will do the same. You dont see that now. Republicans dont want to give up anything. And the conversation is taking place in a whole farther to the right. Exactly. And so, do you think the Democratic Party now you made an interesting point pap lot of people in the media would say ok, the republicans went right and departments went left. Theyve had to make some more accommodation, because the republicans are leaning and they want to get something done. That they wanted to limit the failures of the bush tax cuts to people under 250,000. They had to go to 450,000. Thats a concession they had to make, because the alternative was to put the country into recession, and the republicans didnt care about that. They were willing to do it. What do you think changed the Republican Party to make them this unreasonable . I dont know. I think they discovered that extremism paid off and so you found by 2008, 2010, you had real not just right wing, but people who didnt care about the country getting eelected to congress in large numbers and all of them republicans. Cenk thats really interesting, because heres a person who ran a campaign against Richard Nixon and youre saying the Republican Party is far more extreme now. Much more. Richard nixon started affirmative action and hiring and government contracts. Hell he went to china. Nobody in the Republican Party would stand for that today. The republican suggestion for secretary of state in a Republican Administration would say we should get along with china, the president would be impeached if you stood by him. We need people who are not in the political photo that we take. Theyre not on the same agenda. Cenk thats interesting. You know, nixon started the e. P. A. Too, of course. Thats right. Now that would be unimaginable even for a democratic president to start a government agency. Nixons only problem when you get down to it was that he was a crook. He was a felon and he should have gone to prison. Cenk that gets to the heart of the issue in my opinion. Im curious to hear what you think. I think we took the crooks and now it has become legalized bribery. We stacked the Supreme Court with the Citizens United decisions and it certainly moved a long way in that direction. Theres no question that money has much more to say about politics and the result than it did, partly because of decisions like Citizens United, partly because people like the Koch Brothers and even karl rove discovered that you can do things with anonymity but also because of television, because money bias television time. Thats why you recognize money. Thats an enormous difference. Thats a huge, huge difference. Cenk one last thing here. From time to time on the show, i say wrong again bob and people dont know who bob is, but you do, because that story is actually about you. Can you tell us that story . The bob is the late robert novak, bob novak. I think your phrase comes from a moment when we were having some argument, i was accusing him of something or other. He wanted to get into the j. F. K. Premier. Oh, is that what it was . Thats right. He said to me i thought you were smarter than that, frank, and i said to him wrong again bob. Cenk i love it. I wish we had all day to talk to you. Thanks for joining us. Because hes my dad in 10 seconds, also the peace corps and how many guests of the young turks fought in 1945. Fighting the nazis not a bad thing on your resume. That will stand up for a while. Great to have you frank. All right eliot . Nope all right. [ laughter ] but trust me, Eliot Spitzer will be on next. Before we do that, were going to have the elbow of the day for you and its a republican who richly deserves it. Well sow you when we come back. Cenk well, the 112th 112th congress was historically unpopular a 5 approval rating, so theyre going to start the 113th 113th congress with a little more of a popular bill Michele Bachmann is going to lead off. She said i introduce the first bill of the 113th congress to repeal obamacare in its entirety. Were going to do this
