Good morning, everybody, president obama continues his divide and compromise strategy today. He is invited paul ryan to the white house for lunch, also invited is chris van holland, who is the Ranking Member of the committee. Todays meals comes on the hills of the dinner the president hosted last night. The post meal feedback the press was all positive. The goal of course is to find a way to end the sequester. The white house confirms that the president will go up to the hill next week to meet separately with the Republican Democratic caucuses. Congressman ryan has a new Budget Proposal he is expected to reveal on tuesday. But it reportedly contains the same old cuts that his last two budgets did, like the medicare voucher plan that voters came to know and dislike. And it includes none of the Revenue Generating tax reforms. And remember that 716 billion in medicare savings that ryan and romney both called cuts well thats also in the ryan budget again as well. After the lunch today, the president and Vice President are going over to the department of the interior where the president will sign the reauthorization of the violence against women act. Stephanie we have heard all of the rhetoric we just talked about what john baner is john boehner is saying. Yeah, bottom line the republican budget and it really is their budget is doubling down on the theory that austerity will get us to the promise land. This budget does not have it doesnt have a growth agenda or a middle class opportunity agenda. What it is doing fundamentally is doubling down on grinding down on the middle class, and its so extreme that the republicans have abandoned a principle that has been vital to their self indication for the past 50 years, and that is a strong military. They are even allowing the military cuts to go into place. Which im okay with that but they are also attaching 44 of the cuts to 14 of the budget. Thats the education programs, research programs, environmental programs, and defund obamacare. And they are defuncting they are defunding doddfrank. Stephanie right. Representative its like they are trying to relitigate fights they already lost. Thats true. Thats exactly right. So theres really a battle in this country that continues, but the Tea Party Majority in the Republican Party in the house is still dominant, so instead of making distingions about you know what, we need to cut here and we can save here, but we have got to invest there, they are not doing that. Any cut is a good cut, that is really the philosophy. And they think they can cut their way tos and austerity. Stephanie right. Most americans dont realize that the deficit has gone down under president obama . Yeah. I think one of the challenges for the democrats is to acknowledge that this government is not standing up and doing what it needs to do for the middle class. We voted yesterday basically to cut further into any kind of middle class opportunity programs in the budget on the same day that wall street hit a record high. A record high. So what we have in this country, which is challenge to our continued prosperity is we have got the highest level of profits for corporations since 1950, and thats good that corporate profits are strong, but it coincides with the lowest portion of that wealth going to workers since 1966 and i think more and more americans are thinking that what were doing here in washington is just not on the level. It was middle class and main street who had to pay for that bailout five years ago when wall street had to beg for a bailout, and they got it. And not a lot of us wanted to do it, but it was a real threat to main street and the middle class, because the banks were too big to fail, but the middle class is saying these guys are back, their bonuses are bigger than ever, and the banks are bigger than ever, we paid for this, and yet our wages and incomes are stumbling along. Stephanie you mentioned corporate profits, and im reading a piece today that economists are predicting this is going to hurt the economy. Thats right. Stephanie in the Housing Market and job market thats right. Stephanie and again, its hard to imagine any other sen arrow, except that the republicans want this to happen so they can blame the president. Its true. And its hard to understand because all of the evidence about austerity is that it fails. Which is not to say were unconcerned about the deficit but the way we have gotten involved in deficit challenges before is with a growth agenda not an austerity agenda. We have a deficit in this country, its real when you are talking about infrastructure. The transportation secretary says america is one big pothole. We dont have the broadband build up that many of our competitors have and we need broadband. Our airports are slow and not on time, so theres a huge infrastructure deficit, and were starting to cut into education, and there is an absolute correlation between Educational Achievement and incomes. Thats getting tougher for white men, but it still remains to be very true, so why we basically refuse to invest in what will be the [ inaudible ] of the future is just a historic mistake. Stephanie right. Representative take us from the inside in terms of what is happening. The president has talked about us lurching from one crisis to the next. What happens now march 27th what what is going to happen now with all of this . Well, what is going to happen is were not going to shut government down by march 27th. The republicans did pass quote, a continuing resolution here in the house. It gave flexibility to the pentagon, but put the domestic programs in handcuffs, so they couldnt use discretion to figure out how best to mitigate the pain of these cuts. That will be acted on in the senate, and it will probably come back from the senate as a lessbad bill. But on the other hand were not going to have a budget that makes lot of sense, and in addition to the grinding down of the middle class, thats what the substance of this budget fundamentally does. What is really disgraceful about the process is we have allowed this sequester that 100 of the members of congress are against to go into effect. Even if you are for cuts you want some discretion on how to do it. So this is a meat axe approach. So the congress are putting their vote on the line item of what they want to cut. Stephanie is there any relief from the sequestration . The only way were going to get relief is through in effect a grand bargain, and the president is reaching out now. He has been criticizes from the house and senate and he had that nice dinner at the jefferson hotel, and made nice with the republican senator, and hell be coming over to the hill next week. And i think thats a good thing, but we also have seen no matter what you do what you say or how you say it there is a Persistent Group among the republicans that will just say no. They were willing to have us default on our debt, and they want to cut cut cut. So im a little bit pessimistic stephanie thats where we were before because i think someone said john boehner had to deliver a pizza. Yeah. Stephanie so i dont know they can try to blame the president all they want i was reading the Time Magazine piece about republicans absolutely are to blame for this. Right. Stephanie there are no two sides to this issue. The blame issue is something that i think is important for the press to weigh it and assign responsibility where it belongs, but i do know that what is really threatening to the economy is our inability to make decisions here. Stephanie yeah. And the concern i have the stock market is coming back, and if you were lucky and had a lot of money in the stock market you are starting to do better the Housing Market is coming back a bit, but what is not coming back is wages. And the main street economy is still very tough for people because theres wage stagnation. The things that people need seconding their kids to college, health care has gone way up and a lot of peoples potential raises get gobbled up with increases in healthcare premiums, so there has been a lock of focus in my view in congress on trying to rebuild that middle class, and provide that infrastructure that has been helpful to it in having more opportunity.
