I really thought he meant stuff like still other stuff one other woman he was sending selfies to when he was back in congress. Oh, no no, no, this is new stuff. This is stuff that came out within the last year. Hes been at it again with a 22yearold woman, who of course, you know, maybe she shouldnt have done it but duh what were you thinking . Well, it came out yesterday at this News Conference but Anthony Weiner he said i told you so. I have said that other texts and photos were likely to come out and today they have. Frankly were in a lot better place today or i would not have run for mayor. Bill he does admit, this is stuff thats happened since hes been out of congress. Some of the things happen before my resignation. Some of them happened after but the fact is that that was also the time that my wife and i were working through some things in our marriage. Bill we thought they had worked through those things in their marriage. By the way, Anthony Weiner was doing this under an alias. She knew who he was. And she knew he was a former congressman but just in case any of this got out, he was using the name carlos danger. So funny. What does that mean . Carlos danger. You couldnt write a funnier fake name. You really couldnt. Bill poor huma abba dean, beautiful woman his wife, deserves sainthood for what shes gone through. And for him to drag her out yesterday, i just thought was cruel but she did it. She stood by his side. And gazing up at him lovingly and then said yep im here with anthony all the way. I love him. I have forgiven him. I believe in him. And as we have said from the beginning, we are moving forward. Bill well, good for her but you know, i forgive him but i could never support him again. Number one i think this raises serious questions about the mans judgment. I think hes got a real problem. I think voters of new york would have to think twice three times, four times five times about whether this is a guy they can trust. How could you trust this guy to make the right decisions . This is so obvious that he should not have been doing this. And secondly, i gotta say, there are other great candidates up there. Weve talked to one of them on our show, bill de blasio who is the best from the liberal point of view, the best progressive in the race. Bill thompson is another one. Also a great progressive in the race. He would an fantastic mayor and so would Christine Quinn. I would have voted for Anthony Weiner frankly. I liked his style. I kind of like his combative political style but i think at this point the guys got a serious problem and he ought to drop out of the race. He should drop out of the race and work on his marriage and his family and work on his sexual aberration or whatever. Or disease. It very well thats a good way to put it. It could be a disease. It is an addiction. An addiction to the power that comes with having these sorts of sexual relationships. He lost everything. Bill take his cell phone away. We have to do something about the 11 million and some of them are valedictorians. My answer to that is by the way their parents brought them in. It wasnt their fault. It is true in some cases but they arent all valedictorians, werent all brought in by their parents. For everyone who is a valedictorian, there is another hundred where they weigh 130 pounds and calves the size of cantaloupes because theyre hauling marijuana across the desert. A republicansponsored republicansponsored amendment which will block the nsa from getting the keeping track of the phone records, all of our phone records and every phone call we make as revealed by Edward Snowden. You know, hes gotten a lot of flak and a lot of people have accused him of being a traitor. Most members republicans and democrats in the senate have said that. The white house said Edward Snowden brought back here. Both republicans and democrats a little bit of different attitude. They say no, no, no, the nsa has been going too far. The patriot act never gave them the right for such a massive spying operation. And there will be a vote today on an amendment which again will strip nsa of the money they need to continue collecting that kind of data. That is going to be very, very interesting to watch here. Its the full court press on a wednesday morning. July 24. On another front politico has done a big study give credit to them. Looking into the i. R. S. In other words they went beyond the scandal right . All of the idea that the i. R. S. Under directions of the white house, was out to get conservative Tea Party Groups only and being unfair to them and declaring war on them. Politico has looked into that and found out it just is not true. That the i. R. S. Was in fact, kicking the tires if you will, checking applications for taxexempt status from many, Many Organizations particularly those that came into being after the Citizens United decision by the supreme court. And they were rejecting many of them because they were purely political but they were rejecting progressive liberal Democratic Organizations as well as tea party organizations. So this was not a witchhunt. It was not directed only against the tea party. And this whole scandal which so many people bought into, not i. I kept telling you, this was not a scandal. So many people bought into it. Politico now proves that this was totally phony. The headline, not just the tea party. I. R. S. Scrutinized liberal groups too. It starts out with a one group in texas. They asked the i. R. S. For a tax exemption. They got a lengthy timeconsuming list of questions like they even had to provide minutes for copies of the minutes for every Board Meeting since the organization had been formed. This is stuff the tea Party Complained about having to provide. Another group that was turned down completely, this one from california because the i. R. S. Concluded it was set up primarily for the benefit of a political party. And these groups, one of them was called progress texas. Its a liberal group from texas and the other is emerge america a liberal Democratic Organization from california. So that whole i. R. S. Thing, all of those hearings, darrell issa, what a phony total phony all of that stuff, all of that screaming, all of that whining. Amounts to nothing. Its amazing. People fell for it. The media fell for it. People jumped on it so quickly and it dominated the news for a large a couple of days. Bill oh, yeah, at least a week. The briefings we got so much about fox news made this their number one cause. Absolutely. The definition of blowing smoke. Bill on other political news you will be pleased to know the governor of virginia yesterday, Bob Mcdonnell who is in a little hot water for having accepted 145,000 in loans or gifts from a very wealthy virginia developer and not reporting those loans or gifts. Still the number one issue on voters minds. It is really refocusing the white house and trying to focus all of washington on something voters are already focused on. Bill are they really going to i think is the number one issue. No doubt about it. President always says when he talked about it, we made progress, still a long ways to go. Are they going to stay on it . Are they going to maintain the focus . What do you hear people telling . Through the fall, they are. I stat down with the white houses chief speechwriter who talked about the plan. It calls for six speeches. Each on a different topic. Whether it is Retirement Security or poverty or College Affordability. I would expect you to hear a lot about College Affordability this fall both government help but also pressure on colleges to rein in cost. Theyll stay on it for at least six speeches. Well see if they translate into any kind of action. He has a limited number of things he can do without congress. Bill it seems to me that sometimes they seem to get off message but they dont have to. I dont mean to be too esoteric. Immigration reform. If youre talking about it, you can talk about that as a jobs bill. Sure. And they have, in fact. Bill obamacare also a jobs bill. There are ways of tailoring everything into that message. Right now one of the things we will definitely hear sales pitches for both of those on those grounds. Obamacare is a little bit dicier. People are still trying to figure out the net impact and whether or not the Short Term Impact and medium term impact and longterm impact will be similar. Youll hear more about Immigration Reform but it is not being given its own separate speech. One of the things the white house talks a lot behind the scenes is how frustrated they are with the second term being consumed with things they have no control over whether it is syria, snowden egypt those sorts of things. So theyre pretty frustrated. This is one area where they think they can retaining the initiative. Bill you sat down with the speechwriter. Im curious did you talk about the process of big president ial speech like this . How long have they been working on this . That was the most interesting part of the piece. He found out he had this assignment in mid june when the senior white house adviser dan pfeiffer strolled into his basement west wing office and said hey were going back to this place knox college. Bill where the president gave a major speech in 2005. It was the first obama speech on the economy. Bill he was a senator. He had just been elected. So they wanted to go back. That was the seminal speech. Hes going to go back to his roots in a way. We talked about what happens. How he goes to the oval office with the president in a laptop and the president riffs for 20 to 30 minutes. He takes a lot of notes and turns that into the first draft. It landed july 14th. Cody keenan told me the president ripped it up pretty well. Bill ten days ago . Yep. Bill whoa. Okay. Cody keenan told me the president rips up first drafts pretty well. He showed me all of page four was crossed out. So talked about the input that different people in the administration have whether it is the obviously the Economic Policy people are heavily involved in. Benefit rhodes, a National Security person, National Security who has some input and some interesting ideas. Very collaborative process but ultimately, it boils down to the president and cody keenan drafting this speech together. Bill and the speech so it goes to knox college. Give the same speech in missouri and the same speech tomorrow in jacksonville. The audiences are basically the same but some of the substances are different. Galesburg used to have a maytag operation there that eventually closed and left a lot of jobs. There will be slightly different pitches. Bill part of the criticism already is the white house you were at the briefing day before yesterday where jay carney practically admitted dont expect anything new. New policies. New proposals. Not in this speech. This is being described as a framing speech. That is to say trying to set the parameters of the debate for the next series of speeches. So you probably wont hear a lot of new things from the president in terms of new policy. Going forward, cody keenan told me they would have a lot of aggressive, new ideas. Bill this comes at a time the lead story in the New York Times this morning is the headline, house g. O. P. Sets a new offensive on obama goals which basically and the republicans unveiled their august strategy yesterday. Saying that their members mainly for the house but their members ought to go back to their districts with the message we are fighting not were fighting in washington for you but we are fighting washington for you and basically were out there to stop everything obama wants to do. Starting with obamacare. So when youve got that, were against everything on the part of the republicans and the white house saying heres what we want to accomplish to get this economy moving. What are the chances anything is going to get done . The chances are poor except unilateral executive action. It is fun to watch the president and the speaker of the house of representatives each saying that theyre going to basically campaign against washington. News flash guys. Where do you work . What do you do . Oh yeah. But you know, the white house is pivoting back to the economy. House republicans are pivoting back to attacking the president s policies. I feel like it might be 2009. Bill and this is theyre setting this up for 2014 that this is going to be the test in 2014. You have a bunch of tests this year on things like raising the debt limit things like that. There will be a fight over spending bills thats brewing and that looks like it will be pretty bad. Youre right. The ultimate, the mediumterm goal is to position themselves for the midterm elections of 2014. Bill do you get the sense in the Obama White House that theres any hope of really accomplishing anything in the second term . Sure. Immigration reform. This has not been an unambitious second term so far if you look at the at least the president ial rhetoric. You have Immigration Reform where they have a mixed role because they feel that the more involved they get the more in danger of the process. But also, you know, if he really follows through with this idea that hes going to convene a conversation on race, not lead it but you know, bring people together to talk about it, that would be fairly ambitious. I dont know what will result from it but that would be an interesting thing. But also the white house is perfectly happy to point you to the first term legislative achievements and say weve done a lot of things here. And theyre content to say look bill we did so much in the first term, we dont have to do anything. Not quite that but they want to see Immigration Reform happen. They really do. But in a lot of other things, you know, i sat down with somebody the other day who said it is so frustrating to have such a limited input on things like syria, on egypt. There is this horrible tension with russia, Edward Snowden the fallout from the snowden revelations. It sounds to me like they just got tired of being spectators. No, it was not. We did an analysis some months ago that found that several progressive groups, a number of groups were targeted as well. The important thing the really important thing to remember about all of the things, every time you hear about an Inspector General or some other accountability structures like the Congressional Budget Office or the Government Accountability office, all of these they have to follow the rules that are set for them. So if a house chairman says give me a report on the targeting of conservative groups, that is what they will produce. They will not exceed those boundaries. I wish more of our colleagues would consider that particular perspective. It looks like the i. R. S. Was going after lefties. Bill so they were equal opportunity offenders if you will. Which they should be. Because if our tax dollars so somebody in the group is saying we should not be paying taxes you have to make sure theyre legitimately serving the public and not just one political party. I have said that other text and photos were likely to come out and today they have. Bill again he admitted that this is postresignation from congress. Weve put it behind us. I put it behind me. Frankly, were in a lot better place today or i would not have run for mayor. Bill would not have run for mayor. It looks like he didnt put it behind him. He hadnt put it behind him. We thought he had. He hadnt. Im not so sure that this defense well, i told you more was going to come out. We put this behind us, is going to work because the idea that he said that more of this stuff was going to come out the assumption was that these were sort of while he was in congress. I never shame on me, but i never thought he might have been referring to stuff after he had allegedly gone and sort of addressed his issue and need to have the online relationships. He knew he was a former member of congress. And she thought she had no problem with that. But anyhow, just so other people didnt pick up on who he was in case they saw the photos, selfies he was sending. He was using the name carlos danger. Which says a lot. Thats just such an awesome name. Bill yeah. You couldnt do any worse than that, i dont think. Carlos danger. Bill the question is, seriously now does he deserve yet another chance . I dont think so. I think weve had it with Anthony Weiner. I was one of the first ones to come out and say look, he made a mistake. So what. Hes a good man a good fighter. He believes in the right causes. He believes in i agree with him on almost every issue. Dont know any policy issue ive ever disagreed with him on. Give him a Second Chance, he would make a great mayor of new york. Im not willing to give him a third chance. Two things. I think it raises serious questions about his judgment, about his maturity, about the trust we could have in him and two, there are other candidates running for mayor who are really good people. Bill de blasio would make a great mayor. Bill thompson would make a great mayor. Christine quinn would make a great mayor. New yorkers have other choices. Let Anthony Weiner work on his problems. Bill are you nationwide . We are. Were now owned by cocacola and so distributed off of the cocacola trucks. More than 100,000 stores around the country. Thats why we did this experiment in all 50 states. Bill so congratulations seriously. So you did this experiment in all 50 states and how did you go about checking the honest tea level . We wanted to do a social experiment. How honest are americans when they think no ones looking . Will they do the right thing . And so we put up freestanding racks of bottled tea and the sign says honor system, 1 a bottle. You pick, you pay then we stepped back. There was a loose box, people could put money in the box. Bill you did this downtown areas. Downtown crossings and then we just stepped back and watched what happened. And what was i guess refreshing to see is 92 of americans put money in the box. Bill no kidding. When we asked people before we did the experiment, whats your expectation, how many do you think . People were like maybe 65 70 . But 92 . Thats higher than i would have thought. Bill thats higher than i would have thought. Theres nobody standing there to no uniform personnel no cameras. Bill you had to have cameras, no . We had some people looking but what we did is we had people from our Company Without any uniform and an ipad marking tabulating the results. Bill kind of standing close enough to see. We did it here in d. C. I actually walked by Dupont Circle. I didnt see it initially. Then i realized they were there. They were look casual, wearing yoga clothes. Just being incognito. Bill cool. Now, did anybody put in more than 1 . Some people put in more than 1. Some people put in winning lottery tickets you know. They had won 2 in the lottery up in maine so they put that in. One person in South Carolina didnt put any money in and then felt guilty afterwards and sent us 2 in the mail. No way im from South Carolina. Im proud of that. It was interesting to see the way people behaved. Bill were there some states that behaved better than others . There were. So two states had 100 honesty rates. Frankly, it is surprising. Bill if i had to guess washington, d. C. Vermont. Bill vermont. Hawaii. 100 and alabama was 100 . Alabama. Those two states are so much alike. I can honestly see how that would happen. And then in indiana and maine were 99 . Of. Wow. Interesting. Bill new jersey had to be at the bottom. [ laughter ] new jersey was 96 . Remember 92 is the average. Better than average. My first thought on the worst would be bill and the mafia rhode island had to be rhode island mafia. [ laughter ] lets see. Rhode island, look up the results here. Bill carol is going to kill me. Good luck with that. As soon as i saw the least honest, i thought immediately it would be washington, d. C. Rhode island is 92 and unfortunately, youre right about d. C. We did the worst . I knew it. Bill d. C. , 80 . Shame on us. Weve done the experiment and it definitely fluctuates. Varies by location. There is a dynamic and so we did it at Dupont Circle in d. C. I was standing around watching and theres sort of it is selfreinforcing behavior. Some people see some people taking without paying, others will follow. Bill oh, really. That seems to be what happened in d. C. Bill so, in terms of the Beverage Business now what is happening with getting away from the high sugar drinks . Its happening pretty quickly. If you look at the trend the share of carbonated soft drinks has continued to decline year after year and the companies have to diversify. They all recognize that. So theyve certainly moved to diet and lower calorie drinks. If you look at what happened in schools, the Beverage Industry has pulled out of selling sweet drinks in schools. I have an 8yearold and a 5yearold. My 8yearold has never had a drink of soda in his life. Even if im like have a drink. Hes like i dont want any. Kid these days are growing up with. When his friends come over, they dont know about soda. One of our fastestgrowing parts of our business, a drink called honest kids a lower sugar drink pouch. You know whats funny, if you were to do a taste test, we would lose because it is much less sweet. But when you put it in a kids lunchbox and thats all there is, they drink it. They get used to it. It gets harder to drink that. Bill so this is 100 calories. Per bottle. Bill compared to if i had a can of cocacola probably about by ounces, it is about twice as many calories for a soda. So were a lot less sweet and thats where we have seen so much interest is just less sweet compared to whats been out there. I also found with sodas a lot of times just the sodium thats in it sometimes doesnt even leave you it still leaves you thirsty after you drink one whereas with tea thats what you want it to do. Bill in this little sipping cup or whatever it is, okay is my ice tea. I center a very i have a very complicated recipe for making this ice tea. I put four tea bags in a pitcher of in a Glass Pitcher and set it out on the back patio. Sun tea. Bill sun tea right. Whats wrong with that . Nothings wrong with that. You know, its great. Bill it doesnt have the flaifs that this does. It might be better than sun tea. Thats a fine way to make tea. Obviously you cant always take that around with you. Bill right. No exactly. What gets me now is still in stores, when i order an because i dont drink coffee but i drink ice tea. If i order a tea theyll say sweetened or unsweetened. Why . Sugar delivery device. Thats why we call it honest tea. Lets just taste the tea and take away the sugar. Bill thats why i love the name of it. Sweet tea of my youth would make your cheeks tingle after you take a couple of sips. Your teeth start to hum. Theres so much sugar. Bill seriously when you get a sweetened tea it is loaded. Loaded with sugar. So where can people find honest tea. It is honest tea. It is sold all around the country. Sold in stores like target and safeway and kroger and giant whole foods of course. Bill honest. It is a great play on words. It is honest tea. And now we know the honest tea level of all of the states. But im proud of us as americans. Nice to know. Bigtime. I hurt a lot of people. When you dig yourself a hole, you need to do something positive. The sheriff of wall street is back. Former governor of new york running for new york citys comptroller office. Make sure your money goes where its supposed to go and make sure the wall street firms that want us to invest two them. So if you are hearing negative noise out there, and you will, keep in mind where its coming from. Look, when i made billion dollar corporations pay back low wageworkers, when i pushed to give exploited undocumented immigrants a real chance, when i would take not wall street firms that were cheating millions of middle class investors, it was all about the same thing. Everyone no matter who you are deserves a fair shot. Im asking voters to give the same to me. Bill it is a damn good spot. Hes a damn good politician, you know. It is nice to have him back just to have a cold, calculating politician out there again. It also reminds me of the movie 8 mile where eminem has so many things going wrong in his life. He comes out and lace everything out so his opponents have nothing bad to say about him because hes said it himself. Bill some are so uncomfortable. He just talks like he would if you were having a beer with him. He definitely knows what hes doing. It will be tough for Scott Stringer who i actually met who . Exactly. Poor guy. He could be out for 100 games. They could announce that this week. Bill arod. Hes in trouble. Bill he isnt even playing now, is he . It is sort of on and on because hes rehabbing. He hasnt been playing much. Bill he wont be. And the Police Officer who released photographs of the boston bomber in a heated response to last weeks Rolling Stone cover is back on the job but in a restricted capacity. The police placed sean murphy on desk duty for sending the bloody photos to boston magazine. He did serve one day unpaid suspension. Some argue what he did may hurt the case against the bomber in court. Bill i think theyve got a strong case against that bomber. Theyve lost the case now. [ laughter ] yeah. Bill i wouldnt worry about that one at all. Hes going to walk now because we saw photos of him in the boat. Bill George Zimmerman right . What is it about new york politics here or what is it about new york politicians dorsey . They seem to have a problem here. Im from california, you know. Thanks for pointing that out. You live in new york. Im learning about how these new york politicians work. It is very interesting. It is a complicated game. Bill i was one of the first ones when Anthony Weiner came back. I always admired him. Great fighter in congress and everything. He wants to run against him. Everybody deserves a Second Chance. I really thought he had this stuff behind him right . Yeah. We had an article i think ruby cramer, one of our reporters wrote it about how sex therapists were saying hes not cured. They did the analyst from like 20 yards away but still figured out that things were not over with weiner and this kind of scandal. Here it is again. Bill he told us more stuff was coming out. But i thought he was actually talking about we were talking about this earlier stuff that happened more, other women we hadnt heard about yet while he was in congress. Right. Bill this is within the last year. Hes back at it again. And then with the ultimate aphrodisiac promising promising promising this young woman he could get her a job with politico in washington d. C. Hey honey, i know dylan byers. Who knows if he really knows them. Bill i know. Im going to start using that pickup line. Hey, do you know who john allen is . Bill didnt bill clinton promise monica a job at the pentagon . Gosh, i dont remember what the promises were for that. Bill how long have you lived in new york . About five years. Bill do you think new yorkers are ready to give Anthony Weiner yet a third chance or this may be one time too many . After this one, i dont know. Its like it is the lying thing is going to be tough to overcome because you know, he was very strong personality. Lot of people like that. Promote himself as a fighter. He didnt really do a lot. But he was on tv making noise and i think people were really excited about that coming back. I was excited about it coming back. I think he was going to tone things down if it was successful again. But now you know, i havent seen any of the instant polls yet. It doesnt seem good. Bill the important point here is there are other good from a democratic progressive point of view at any rate, there are other good candidates. De blasio, quinn. I kind of had a feeling that quinn was going to kind of like pull ahead once we got in the homestretch of things even if Something Like this came out. But now it just seemed like inevitable that hes just going to fade away. But he wont. He will stay on tv as much as he possibly can. Bill dorsey shaw here from buzzfeed covers cable news. She got in a little hot water which john stanton was happy to remind her of last night in 2008 where she endorsed, as a woman endorsed barack obama over Hillary Clinton. She talked about it last night a little bit. I think they understand, you know, that it wasnt like i endorsed a good ole boy against her. We had two historic candidates. They were both amazing. It was a hard thing to do. Because a lot of the women were upset with me. Having said that, i couldnt be more enthusiastic for her to be president now. And i cant wait to work as hard or harder for Hillary Clinton as did i for barack obama. I think i heard dorseys glass clinking in the background i think i was actually pulling my hair out. The audiovisual problems i was having. Thats another story. Shes getting back on board with the clintons, right . Well, you know, it seems like thats the candidate she would have to endorse no matter what. Everybodys going to line up behind hillary. Good timing. But you know, the things that she said back in the day. Little tough. I dont expect to see her on the campaign trail too much with hillary if thats whats going to happen. Bill is she optimistic about getting anything done in the senate this year . Ya know, thats a question for somebody that covers the hill. Bill okay. Did you get that impression watching her last night . I got the impression that she is definitely thinking about making moves, you know. In the future. Who knows what thats going to be. Shes a personality. You know. She definitely showed it last night. She could definitely go far. Bill she knows the social media, too. John was bringing that up how she was actually the reason that he got on twitter. You know, he started using twitter because of her tweets from inside the senate chambers, like tweeting stuff she wasnt supposed to tweet about harry reid and you know, he said that reporters were telling him you have to get on this on the services, this new thing the kids are using and he kind of like resisted but said once he got on, it was amazing and she was really great at social media. Really early adapter and took to it naturally. John has now mastered twitter by the way. Bill as the master of Cable Television, is jeff zuiker going to be able to move into cnn and get cnn back on top . Or at least over msnbc . It seems like it is working so far but its so hard to tell because most of the big ratings bumps that cnn seems to get are from, you know, huge trials, huge events, when it is like day to day politics, the grimes, well see what happens when 2014 starts up again or 2016 whenever that is which could be any minute. Thats what im waiting to see. So far things are going well for cnn. I think theyre happy with whats happening. Beating out fox is going to be tough for anybody. Right. I think the goal, like you said bill between the two of them. Be a solid number two and then the next level bill msnbc seems to be dragging after what they were doing like last year. Why . Is it because people are not interested in politics or theyre not putting up good programming . I think it is a lull in politics, you know. And also with these other huge events that are happening. Trials and crazy people during offelection years want to watch fluff and have fun and not necessarily getting the politics right away. So i dont know. I think msnbc could pull it out once the election starts again. But it is pretty rough right now. Bill they made changes in the lineup.
