The history of trenton, new jersey. Long history. S a for the united states, it is very old. It was founded in 1679. An important part in the American Revolution, then a long part in the industrial revolution. There are a lot of great thats what makes trenton special. It was a mix of old and new is what makes cities great. Thee took a driving tour of city with architect and Trenton Historical Society member john hatch. We are just going to head up to the corner then you will make a left. These barracks were built for the french and indian war, the building was built in 1758. There were i think three other barracks built in new jersey but it human one that is still in existence. Now its a museum, a great museum. They do reenactments in the front courtyard, including musket fire. [laughter] if you are not used to it that can because for concern, my office is right across the street so we hear it all the time. [laughter] this is west state street. We are approaching the statehouse the statehouse is right there. We are starting restoration work so thats why some windows are blocked up. The oldest part of the statehouse is from 1792, which remains the second oldest statehouse still in use. This estate 3, 1 of the main tracks. Really beautiful old houses along here. These were houses built by part of the roebling family. This is the Ferdinand Roebling mansion. Over there is need use it in new Jersey State League of municipalities. Whats had left along the river. Was this initiative important initially . Yes, it is what trenton is here. Theres evidence of native american settlement here form many thousands of years because it is the highest navigable point on the delaware. Because of the roots, the location on the river, and Later Development because of canals came through to connect with the delaware a canal system comes , than several trendlines. Trenton was a real transportation center. Seeing a lot of bridges, you cannot miss theres a big sign that says, trenton makes the world takes. Trenton was a very important in the American Revolution, site in themajor industrial revolution. In the 1830s, but the lower this canal was built. That is one Major Companies started to move to trenton. At a small sitting, trenton its peak had 130,000 people. It had a whole slew of major industries, including it was known for innovation with wire thats the john a roebling sons company. In im going to forget i think 1848. He broke the company here to trenton. The wireere they might rope for virtually made the the Manhattan Bridge come a Golden Gate Bridge come in between, that is where they spun the wire rope. They manufactured anything that you needed wire for at the roebling wire works. Did the bring a lot of people to trenton, once that economic room happened . It was. That was the Largest Company in trenton. The thousands of workers in trenton. Trenton was also a larger producer of steel, rubber, and number one of brought pottery instinet ceramics. Companies like the Lenox Company at itsted here peak there were 120 pottery and ceramic companies in trenton. It included what became american standards, toilets and sinks read all those companies started here in trenton. He mentioned the wire rope. Come aware are we headed now . Tore the roebling wire works. You will see, those Companies Shut down in the 1970s. Then the buildings were largely empty. We are involved with the redevelopment of those buildings. Some 40 have been redeveloped. I will show you some buildings worked on being worked on. Thats were pursuing across there, the roebling wire works, right over there. Oh, wow. This think its building is building 114, will be up to 100,000 square feet of just incredible office tech space. Building up here that is under construction, which is actually almost done, is building 101 which will be 138 blocks apartment. Where we heading now . To my neighborhood called, mill hill, the mill hill historic district. It was the first part of trenton that was settled in 1679. You can still see remnants in the park of the original mail that was built mill built there in the late 17th century. The neighborhood was developed, built there are a couple of 18thcentury houses, most of which were developed starting in the 1830s. It was taking advantage these were people that either were factory owners that lived there, professional people shopowners, factory workers altogether in this cool little neighborhood. Who lives here now . Now its a historic district. Again, its a really cool mix. Will make a left onto jackson street. Theres a really cool mix of folks that have lived in the neighborhood for a long long time. Ethnically diverse, racially diverse, economically and so its got these really beautiful for the most part, the oldest houses are maybe from the 1840s and they go up to the 1840s. Lovely. Its charming. Theres a parkway, mill hill park. This is where the second battle of a war took place. During the American Revolution it is an incredibly important site. Were theliterally second battle of trenton took place. The british soldiers were on the others peers of the creek that you could see running through the art. On the other side of the creek, thats were set up. On side, it stretched out about did look like this back back then, this is where the Continental Army was. Was righthington here. Theres the british mark back into trenton for the second battle pushed the american troops back over the creek. Thats what we set up on this side. There was a running battle over we stopped the british from crossing over the creek, killed i think 130 hessian mercenary troops. They then settled down on the other side of the creek, expecting to crush the americans. But instead, George Washington was a good come sneaky american, snuck out of trenton overnight, withdrew, and then marched up to princeton. Thats for the battle princeton took place. We are heading out to the battle monuments, the battle trenton the first battle. Make a right here, sorry. It is so interesting that it all happened in what is now the downtown area. Its in the city, not on the outskirts, it is right here. The time of the evolution was a small town. Fewer than 200 houses, and the battles both happen right into downtown trenton on the early colonial streets, we are about again. S over this creek this is the bridge though it looks different, it was an old foot ridge this is where the second battle of trenton took place. There are the remains of the old 17thcentury right there in the creek. We are heading up broad street. There were battles happening right here, especially for the second battle of trenton. Heading up broad street toward the battle monument. So the men, the statue on the top of that is George Washington, his direct and is nowry fire down what broad street important street. It was king and queen street at the time. We are coming down warned street i will come about point out a couple other sites. Thats the catholic cathedral here in trenton. On the left at st. Michaels that is one of the oldest churches in trenton. Parts of the church church, not the parts you see, were here for the second firtash first and second battle. British hessian mercenaries had been housed in their. Shot very close by here. So this is a very important site for the American Revolution right here. This is mixed in with the rest of the city. This is not this Furniture Stores next to where people live. Exactly, right, so there are apartments over there, catholic cathedral over there. State Office Buildings a block away. Smack here, in the middle lots of people walk by, what an important sites this was for the future of our country. The 1780s as the Nations Capital. Corner historic, this gorgeous bank building. There was a large cavern here, the french arms tavern. This is where the congress met both during the revolution and after the revolution. Coming was very closely our Nations Capital, washington, d. C. One out in a very close vote. We talk about the citys, lets talk about its presence. Great. How can it continue to revitalize . Umm. I think its a couple things, taking advantage of its history, the great architecture here, great things that have happened, then bringing in new people and businesses. Projects like roebling center, so much of trentons historic come has great historic buildings. I like to see more and more redevelopment of those great historic buildings.
