Narrator the home of the californiacs was the first state park. Back in 1965, the government gave her the yosemite alley. Which was a state park until it went back to uncle sam again in 1890 to become part of Yosemite National park. At the turnofthecentury, she made a second effort, buying 9000 acres of redwood forest and created californias redwoods state park. Redwoods, the tall tapering giants of the tree world, are largely responsible for the fact that the golden state has a state park system, one of the finest in existence. During the world war, and extraordinary organization, the save the redwoods fleet, was brought into existence chiefly to save the Virgin Redwood forests along the coast of the state. Out of the work drove the movement for a series of parks to create liberal samples of the best of californias natural beauty. Three to one, california voted in 1929 to give 6 billion to parks. The bond required that if that 6 million has been spent, california has obtained mountain and sea, valley and desert, canyon, stream, and waterfall with quite a majestic world filled with giant ferns countries that rise 300 feet to the sky. It is saved forever from the axe. Behold them who with awe and reverence. California redwood state park, consisting of some 10,000 acres, mostly redwood forest, 2. 5 hours from San Francisco in santa cruz county, was the first state park created when the golden state set out to create a system of state owned recreational areas econd to none. It is a magnificent monument to those stately giants of the orest world. The park is splendidly equipped to serve the requirements of the visiting public, and in the Summer Season is constantly thronged with pleasure seekers. The members of the civilian conservation corps under the ecw plan speeded up development that will take many years to omplete. Additional roads and trails are needed, for it must be remembered that the park covers lmost 16 square miles. The trail building is not easy, for there are timbered canyons to be encircled and traversed and mountains to be climbed. Bridges are being put in, instructed entirely of bold native material. Timbers are easy to procure and therefore inexpensive. The conservation corps, under the expert direction they are given, are able to handle every etail of the work. The park is a larger system that is well known and intensively used for the minor details of the park equipment in every way. There are lots of Outdoor Cooking or capstones, and the odds with which they are built by the conservation corps enrollees, are concrete fabrication plant. The camp equipment is designed by draft equipment and designed o the camps. The chief concern is fitness in relation to the forest environment. Along and near the south fork of the eel river and its tributaries and in the regions traversed by the redwood highway are outstanding beauty spots of stream and valley andscapes. A popular resort, humboldt county, Humboldt State redwood park has always needed the work that has been made possible by inauguration of the ecw plan with its army of civilian onservation corps workers. It was imperative the beauty of the area as a whole should be preserved by extending the boundaries of the original lands comprising the park. Clearing dense undergrowth from the big redwoods for fire revention and freer growth provides lumber for any kind of construction job that may be desirable. The conservation corps boys make everything from heavy bridge timbers to park signs. Many of the trails being built have exceptional scenic beauty. They wind for miles over for an clad over fern clad slopes to reach mountaintops. Around the core campsites, the traffic set up by the new work project make constant roadwork necessary. Increasing the Telephone Communication system in these big forest areas is an invaluable conservation measure in which the enrollees are working. Timber fires have not got the chance that they had some years ago. Here are some of the most impressive and earliest known groups of big sequoias. The stanislaus river, one of the most beautiful of the many californian mountain streams, flows near the groves. In forests where necessary thinning provides the goal, the extension of telegraph and telephone systems is not difficult. Miles of fire lanes are being cut. Trenching and the improvement of the San Jacinto Mountains outline characteristic of the sierras. Here more than 50 square miles of beautiful wilderness, virgin timber and rugged mountains. One peak rises well over two miles. The summit of the range affords an impressive view of the surrounding country for hundreds of miles around, and from hidden lake, one can see the desert so weirdly and mysteriously bearing on the very edge of this amazingly fertile alifornia. In recent years the world over, there seems to have been an awakening to the joys of a more rugged life outdoors. Thousands of men, women and children are tramping the countryside, not merely riding hrough it. Our Larger National parks are more popular than ever efore. San jacinto is one area where the beauties of nature will never unfold themselves completely to those who think of scenic sightseeing a job for automobiles. Foot roads at the end of motor roads. One conservation camp was established way up in the clouds. Lumber had to be carried up on the backs of horses and burros. From the winding trail, the customer can see a widely changing view of beauty spots. Countless wonders which nature alone can create. Here is a lot of work to establishing the kind of camp in which more than 200 people can live for an indefinite period winter and summer in comfort and with safety to their health. In this mountain country, the same rocks that make grading difficult have their virtue in providing splendid material for foundations wherever building strength is essential. Building additional trails as a part of the enrollees work at san jacinto. Some of them look like hasms. Culverts and supports are made from granite rocks quarried right on the job. The first chow call of the day is at the early hour of 6 00 in the morning, but no one is ever late for breakfast. His appetite wont let him. Looks like ham and eggs. Luncheon is sometimes served in the field, for the boys frequently work many miles from camp, and the workers must have ot food three miles a day. Types a day. Dinner or supper if you prefer the term is served about 4 30 in the afternoon. Every man, his own ishwasher. Rubicon point is a scenic area on the shores of lake tahoe, one of the highest and the largest of the sierra lakes. The lake itself, because bodies of water of this size are rarely found at high altitudes, is an attraction of itself. Here is an expanse of 193 square miles of cold, crystalclear water purged almost a mile and a and a ed almost a mile quarter high in the mountains. Many of the Motion Picture celebrities from Southern California have traveled along its shores. Within easy motoring distance of sacramento and San Francisco, the Rubicon Point park attracts many visitors. Campsites particularly on Rubicon Point are popular. The conservation corps boys are doing much of their work in the forest, cutting new trails and establishing additional campsites. Sometimes they find it necessary their period of usefulness and interfering with the development of the park as a whole. One of those not infrequent examples of eroded rock is a point of interest. It is called the balanced rock. Not enough is known of the civilian conservation or conservation of civilians part of this unique nationwide recovery plan. More than a million young men and war veterans have been participants. Few have failed to absorb it values even greater to them than the money given. These boys here are being taught many things about tree and plant life, insect pest control, which they can apply in later ife. Prairie creek in humboldt county is a magnificent redwood ark. Rocky ocean shores with stretches here and there of sandy beach and to the charm of the region. Think of the piece of a camp like this where a trip 300 feet from the springy turf with the incense of redwood, pine and fir. At patricks point, forests give way to meadows, and meadows to the sea. One stretch of beach is being cleaned of debris to provide fine ocean bathing. Undergrowth is luxuriously deep, and the trail building is being carefully done to preserve t. One of the interesting activities of the boys here is the making of redwood signs to mark trails and places of interest. Unusual talents along widely varied lines have been uncovered among the enrollees. From roads along the tumultuous big sur river, there are vistas of turning for rivers, waterfalls, stately forests, meadows and lofty mountain peaks. Just before it plunges into the pacific, the big sur traverses a Beautiful Valley about 250 feet above sea level. 600 acres, including this alley, are comprised in this outstanding state park area, variously named from the big sur river, pipers woods and pipers point, which are in the same icinity. Mountain streams in the california region are unusually swift and powerful. When they start for their ocean destination from elevations much greater than those common along the atlantic seaboard, they move with speed and determination. The distances they traverse are relatively short. The drop is much more precipitate. They are really a part of one great waterfall from the peaks of the sierras to the expansive and powerful pacific. The park is in monterey county, about 30 miles south of armel. With its western boundary about six miles from the junction of the big sur and the pacific ocean, which is on a fine state highway and easily accessible to travelers en route between los angeles and San Francisco, the two largest cities in the state. Its scenic features are diversified. Manuel peak and post summit are bout 3500 feet high. There are mountain canyons well worthy of the name. The juan gigera waterfalls are of exceptional beauty. Generally speaking, Building Construction work done by the conservation corps enrollees is incidental to the program being carried out. Theyre usually built for them before they arrived in camp. This garage for tractors, trucks and so on is a conservation construction. Much of the trail and road work being done requires nothing more than the good old pick and shovel. But in some instances, the most modern of motorized equipment is eing used. There are seasons of the year when the big sur becomes quite unruly, and the part of the work that is on the riverbed, easing the flow of water. With 200 active Young Americans on hand, good baseball is an almost inevitable result. Miles of babbling brooks, just the sort of place people from the coast cities like so ell. Roads and trails will open up new spots and frequently require retaining walls, coverts, and short bridges. A circumstance is that sand and gravel are available, able to steam trucks and shovels busy or days. Useful and attractive as incense, cedar. Careful of the trees that are already dead is helpful, not hurting the forest. Cedar is able to split into good rails, which has lasting qualities. He fence you see being erected is near the core camp. Grasshoppers are noticed in the field. They are stopped with poison. Here are the boys who are doing the job, answering the bugle for assembly before the days work egins. On morro, where morro rock is an outstanding scenic attraction, it also is being expanded and developed in a manner that will make it useful and attractive to everybody. The conservation corps camp has been established near the site of the old cabrellio country club colony. A fine natural beaches being approved for bathing. The old wooden pier is being replaced. Roads near the beach are being relocated to provide picnic grounds and parking areas. There will be the usual outdoor ovens, freshwater outlets, tables, and benches. The state Park Commission is interested in a purely conservation measure, the development of a wildlife efuge. Dikes are being built to shut out the ocean. A freshwater supply will be provided for small lakes and lagoons to attract waterfowl. Russian gulch and Mendocino County is richly closed with redwoods, rhododendrons, uckleberry, and ferns. It is sharply cut by inlets in which ocean tides lash wildly to create everchanging spectacles. Conservation corps boys are patrolling the beach, clearing it of ocean wreckage that comes with the tides to interfere with the bathers full enjoyment. Deep in the forest, they are modifying natures handiwork, roads are being made safe and asy for motorcars. Careful and intelligent work is making a sluggish brooke and even more delightful haunt. Fallen timber that constitutes an ever present fire hazard is being removed. Housing of the conservation corps and their equipment has called for a considerable amount of construction in the park. The boys at Russian Gulch are fond of the manly art, and a surprisingly large number of boxers participate in boxing ournaments which are held. These negro lads prove the development of the basic conservation core idea, working in the fresh outdoors in sunshine, good food, plenty of sleep and an easy mind. Ooks like a real goal. A wellconstructed squared circle, gloves light enough to feel the sting of a punch and a jauntily worn bathrobe. A cheering and enthusiastic udience. These trophies, paid for by the boys themselves, will recall some of the happiest days in the lives of these fine americans. Narrator one million unemployed young men and war veterans were enrolled in the civilian conservation corps, in the first two years of its existence. They are taken by a first basis. Population percentage basis. Their personal care are in the hands of the United States army, the countrys most experienced organization. Each state park corps camp is set up according to a carefully organized plan. The superintendent employed by the state Park Division of the National Park service, is in charge of the work. Skilled equipment requires supervision. The enrollees serving as helpers. The basic fee for enrollees is 30 per month. 25 of which is mailed directly to his declared defendants. Everything the enrollee requires is supplied to him. Clothing, comfortable barracks, good food. Doctors are in regular attendance. Direction of this unique and fundamentally sound program to preserve and develop the nations resulted of a plan that places i value on manpower and is in the hands of some of the countrys most important individuals. We asked members of congress about which parks in their states have the most significance for them. Senator wyden oregon has so many special places, for example Haystack Rock on the oregon coast where my wife and i were married, and it is a treasure to s. I think from the standpoint of parks, i mentioned crater lake National Park. This is a real treasure and enjoyed by people not just from the United States but all over the world. It is 14 years older than the park service itself, and the water is absolutely incomparable. Its just surrounded by spectacular recreation and wilderness. This is a place like no other. The solitude, for example, is something that is treasured by all. A couple of years ago there was an effort to fly helicopters over crater lake and i stepped in and blocked it because of citizen outcry to helicopters was so great. I also believe that if we protect our parks and celebrate and recognize that recreation and tourism is a huge economic engine for our country, it produces 61 million worth of revenue every single year, and i just looked forward to celebrating with friends and neighbors and guests from all over the world because this will be a very special time at a very special place to recognize what is best about our country. This of course is the big party, the 100th anniversary, and its because we have said in our country that our parks are special places, i was especially struck during the Government Shutdown when there was debate about the services that are most important to americans, and our people said just dont mess with mericas special places. This past thursday the National Park service celebrated its centennial. This is American History tv. Nly on cspan 3.
