And the destruction of our large battleships. We are grateful with the help of our allies we brought the ensuing war to a Successful End and all animosities have faded the passage of time. Faded with the passion passage of time. We prayed the lessons we learn from that day regarding our nations safety will never pass away. We confess you gave us a Wonderful World large enough and productive enough that all of us can have a good life. We have made it into a world where violence and wars are common. Today, we humbly pray that you would hasten the day that your prophet isaiah promised, when your children will live together in peace as brothers and sisters and there will be no more war. On december 7, 1941, without warning, japanese warplanes to this on the american Pacific Fleet, catching it by complete surprise. In the aftermath of the bombing , ships torpedo attacks and aircraft burned and 2103 americans lay dead or dying. It was the worst enable disaster s history. Try americans awoke to fear, confusion, and anger. President roosevelt assured, comforted, and embolden the American People. Today i share some of those words with you. Mr. Vice president , mr. Speaker, members of the senate and of the house of representatives. 7, 1941, adecember date which will live in infamy. The United States of america was suddenly and deliberately forcesd by naval and air of the empire of japan. On thek yesterday Hawaiian Islands has caused a Severe Damage to American Naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that Many American lives have been lost. The people from the United States have already formed their opinion and will understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation. As commanderinchief of the army and navy, i have directed all measures be taken for our defense. But always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us. No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated people, the american and their righteous might will , win through to absolute victory. So help us god. [applause] i believe i interpret the will of the congress and the people when i assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the outermost, but make it very certain that this form of againry shall never endanger us. Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory, and our interests are in grave grade grave danger. With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbound thing determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph. I ask that congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by japan on sunday december 7 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the japanese empire. Within the hour, Congress Declared war on japan. On december 11, hillard declared war on the United States. The following day congress , declared war on germany and italy. 75 years later, it is difficult to appreciate the gravity of what had just occurred. The attack on pearl harbor thrust United States into a struggle that would end our data with either end in our victory or conquest. The struggle for the lives of the American People and their descendents, born and unborn, with live with dignity, liberty, and rule of law or under the forces of tyranny, oppression, and genocide. States, these tremendous the decision by japan, germany, and italy to go to war with the United States reflected a fundamental misunderstanding of the american character. At the most basic level our enemies underestimated the blooded and sorely tested commitment to freedom that forms our union. Understanding this and knowing that no totalitarian state can match the spirit and the human that theenergy patriotic republic had released. Fdr never wavered in his confidence the United States would prevail. In the aftermath of the attack, the mood who was notable for the steadiness of resolve in the absence of hesitation. In her weekly radio broadcast, Eleanor Roosevelt reflected the feelings of the American People. Andnow what we have to face we are ready to face it. Whatever is asked of us, i am sure, we can accomplish it. We are the free and unconquerable people of the usa. In subsequent months, the military will transform itself from a combat power transferring trailing back of romania into , a battle hardened superbly led fighting force and more technologically capable than any other in the world. The American Economy would transform and expand into a colossal engine of war. Clothing, feeding, arming, and fueling not only the american military, but the militaries of britain, the russians come the free french and others to gradually overpower the actions that which cannot approach the overwhelming american output. For those like me who received , the unearned gifts of freedom paid for by the service of all , americans during world war ii, our obligation is to remember and honor those who gave their lives at pearl harbor and the subsequent battles of world war ii. Our obligation is to remember and honor all those who sacrificed for our nations cause and uniform. Our obligation is to preserve into the future the delicate experiment that is this republic. Before asking congress to declare war against japan, fdr concluded his remarks on an with an invocation to the providence of the almighty. We see the many factors at decisive to victory which lay beyond our power. The mistakes of our enemy, the critical fortitude of the british and the tremendous tenacity of the russians. The separation afforded by the oceans, which provided the United States with the necessary time to mobilize and the resources. Of all the worlds belligerence, the United States was the only country with the breadth of access, industrial capacity, and agricultural capacity, the scientific base and critical raw material such as bauxite and petroleum to wage a sustained world war. Recognizing gods silent agency, we are humbled acknowledging the , limits of man and our dependence on a just, loving god. We are grateful, knowing it is by his grace we live in freedom. And we are committed, conducting our affairs with virtue and wisdom so that our creator will bless our future as he is blessed our past. As at other critical junctures in our nations history during , world war ii, gods hand was on our shoulder. May it be always. [applause] John Sidney Mccain the third, the senior United States senator from the great state of arizona. [applause] im honored to be here today with all of our members of our greatest generation and all of our friends and supporters. So it is a privilege to be here and join you in commemorating the events of december 7, 1941 to pay our respects to the sacrifice and heroism displayed that day. And to remember the day america entered the Second World War and began our leadership of the free worlds, which have continued now for three quarters of a century. 1941. Er 7, one of the dates on which history swung on its great hinge and the world was forever changed. For some of us, it is a personal memory, as it is for me. It is one of my earliest memories. I was five years old, playing in the front yard of our familys london, connecticut. A black sedan pulled up in front of the house. A navy officer in uniform roll down the window and shouted at my father that the japanese had bombed pearl harbor. My father left immediately for the marine base for he was stationed and i rarely saw him again for the next four years. He commanded submarines, surviving depth charges and other terrifying under sees encounters with enemy. My grandfather held commands in the pacific. First of all landbased aircraft and the Guadalcanal Campaign and in the last year of the war he commanded a vast carrier task force. He stood on the deck of the uss missouri as the japanese formally surrendered. He came home from the war, exhausted from the burdens and died the same day. During the war, and whenever my father was at sea, the job of raising my brother, sister, and me felt my mother alone. She gave us her strength, love of life, and her deep interest in the world. I wouldnt be here today but for her character and example. In about two months we will celebrate her 105th birthday. [applause] Many American families were changed that day. Many endured the pain of separation from loved ones, and many suffered the pain that time never completely heals. The loss of children, parents, and siblings. America was changed forever. The events of that infamous a day. The day that saw the might encourage of the American People and the beginning of our countrys rise to its preeminence among the nations of the world. A preeminence we maintain to this day to our benefit and the benefit of humanity. It began when the officers and sailors of the Pacific Fleet were awakened shortly after before 8 a. M. , by the alarm. A , little after eight the first torpedo bomb struck a gun to her it on the uss arizona and glanced off the deck without seriously damaging the ship. A minute or two later, another bomb struck the ship and detonated its ammunition magazine, starting a holocaust that would send the arizona and 1100 and 77 men, over half the casualties suffered that day, to the bottom of pearl harbor bay where she remains to this day as a military cemetery. The arizona was a flagship of a friend of my grandparents, parents who raced to the bridge at the first warning. The arizonas last skipper, captain ben franklin falkenberg joined him there. But then fall directly and perished in the fire. Countless acts of valor and selfsacrifice were witnessed that day on the arizona. And on other ships of the fleet. , and bellesld field, in the cockpits of outgunned hocks and war hawks and dont listen dive bombers. We were defeated by our enemy for a moment. Diminish the nobility of the sacrifices made by americans that day for the sake of duty, honor, or country. Neither does it obscure the magnitude of their real achievement. We fault the first battle and set the first example in a Long Campaign of americas leadership of the free world. Many battles followed. Many challenges were offered and met. With our allies, we defeated our enemies in the pacific and in europe. We defeated our cold war adversary and we will prevail over the challenges we face today. [applause] but it began with the courage and faith of those americans who answered their summons to duty, as pearl harbor who gave all the , duty asked of them. Its important we keep the memory of their patriotism alive. Guardimportant that we against the complacency that is always a threat to our security. Say, hot oilthey from the hold of the arizona bubbles to the surface. It is not only a living testament to the destruction on december 7, 1941. It was a warning that freedom is never cheap. Live in this brave nation, must do our duty to be watchful and provide for the common defense with the resources at our disposal so that the best men and women in america will not be forced to provide for it with their lives. Thank you all for remembering and inviting me to join you. [applause] thank you, senator mccain. [applause] ladies and gentlemen at this , time we will have our brief presentation. Presentation. Please remain seated as our world war ii veterans be prepared with the wreaths. In that time, well have chaplin commander humphrey give the benediction accompanied by the United States Navy Ceremonial band. Let us pray. Saveal father, strong to whose arm hath bound the , restless waves and who binds our hearts and spirits one to another across the years in the miles. As we remember with profound gratitude, the devotion to duty and the heroism of so many at and near pearl harbor on that great and terrible day 75 years ago. And as we prepare to go on from this historic occasion and sacred place, we ask your blessing on our nation and all her people. Bless us with the humility never to take for granted their selflessness in the face of the devastation and the danger. And give us grace to draw inspiration from the heroes of pearl harbor, as we face the challenges and dangers of our own time. Grant us hearts to love liberty, and guide our bodies, minds, and souls towards the true and lasting peace that is the fruit of moral strength and righteous courage. Greater love has no one than this, the one laid down his life for his friends. Thus, always, always, always we remember pearl harbor. And so hear us when we cry to the for those in peril on the sea. Amen. [band plays] [applause] senators, and representatives, i have the distinguished honor of presenting the president of the United States. [applause] Vice President , mr. Speaker, members of the senate and the house of representatives, ye 1941, a december 7, date which will live in infamy, the United States of america was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the empire of japan. States was at peace ath that nation, and solicitation of japan, still in conversation with its government looking toward, the maintenance of peace in the pacific. After japaneser air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American Island of oahu, the japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleagues delivered to formalretary of state a reply to a recent american message. Itle this reply stated that seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiation, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack. It will be recorded that the distance of hawaii from japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned, for many days or even weeks. During the intervening time, the japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope to our continued peace. On theack yesterday Hawaiian Islands has caused Severe Damage to american
