Government shutdown and what the people of capitol hill have been doing in the background to keep that from happening. Reporting this morning, saying multiple people said finding a path to adverting a shutdown would begin in earnest, once lawmakers descend on washington because there have been not active negotiations over the august recess. They spent several weeks working the phones, leadership will work this week to decide if keeping the government open is good for the party. Adding that complicated leaderships desire to pass appropriation bills this week is a threat from the caucus, embers of the hard right group have demanded cuts to all 12 appropriation bills, reversing government funding and enduring the agreement on spending levels, that was reached earlier this year in a deal to raise the debt limit. That was in the Washington Post this morning. When it comes to that inquiry, it is punch bowl news, reported out of this morning. Launching an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden is the next logical step in the gops probes of the president and his son, hunter biden. Mccarthy and House Republican leadership scheduled a closed door session for thursday morning so the members could get an update on the investigations led by the House Judiciary Committee chair jim jordan, and mccarthy plans to say that the two chairs have uncovered enough information that necessitates the house formalizing the impeachment inquiry in order to obtain the bidens bank records and other documents. This of course, punch bowl reporting, a huge step because it remains to be seen whether there are 218 House Republicans who vote to authorize the impeachment inquiry, several moderate republicans have been skeptical of the need for impeachment inquiry. He said this on the hill in an interview, it comes to how you prioritize your time, i dont know of anybody who believes Chuck Schumer will take it up and actually have a trial and convict a sitting president. Earlier this year, democrats and republicans reached an agreement on next years spending levels as part of our work to avoid default. These bills honor that agreement. Reaching bipartisan consensus on these bills certainly wasnt easy and it took plenty of compromise, lots of negotiations and understanding that neither side would get everything it wanted. Each of these bills received unanimous support in the committee. From republicans and democrats, so thanks to the leadership of jim murray, vice chair collins and appropriators from both sides moving forward. This is what functional legislative body looks like, disagreements dont paralyze the process. Now as we process these Appropriations Bills through the floor, Congress Must also avoid a shutdown later this month. I cannot stress enough that fumbling into a shutdown right now would not only be entirely unnecessary, it would cause immense harm to the American People, it could undermine so much of the progress we have made to lower costs and restore the tens of millions of jobs lost during the worst days of covid. It would also derail converse from our work on so many important things like lowering the cost of insulin and prescription drugs, aiding our fellow americans who were hurt from financial disasters, and competing the Chinese Government and so much more. This would be undermined by a government shutdown. Lets start with the number of days that congress has to come to some type of decision before the government shuts down. Where are we . We are running out of time. The house comes back for the first time in more than a month today for their first we are obviously barreling down the password to shut down. Both chambers have not begun in earnest to talk about how they are going to get out of this. The consensus is a shortterm passage most likely. Weve got 11 or 12 legislative days left. The outlook remains cloudy. As far as what has been going on in the background and coming up with at least a framework or plan that republicans can support what has been going on on that front . I think that is what we are going to look for today to see we are expecting the House Freedom caucus to have a press conference this afternoon. Laying out how they see the landscape shaping up as you were alluding to in the last segment there is a meeting of the rules committee this afternoon. They are trying to take up one bill as part of the spending package. We will see if they can even do that. That might be a harbinger of where things stand in the house in terms of moving the appropriations packages. There has been an effort i think Speaker Mccarthy voice support for trying to move a continuing resolution more time to negotiate a comprehensive framework. So far we have not seen yet by and from the rankandfile that would indicate that approach is going to be successful. Obviously time is running short. Talk about the House Freedom caucus what are they looking for to agree to some type of funding deal . They are frustrated of course with the deal between Speaker Mccarthy and President Biden earlier this year as part of the debt ceiling. They would like the spending levels with the debt that deal to come down. Those were negotiated obviously it is going to be a nonstarter for the senate and President Biden. It remains unclear what exactly they could want that Speaker Mccarthy could possibly give them given the fact we do have a democratic held senate obviously President Biden is in the white house. So i think in terms of the outlook here about what can be given im not really sure what it looks like. I suppose we will see those demands laid out in clearer terms today. But certainly Speaker Mccarthy will have a tough hand here in terms of trying to do something that will placate the far right version of the caucus as well as moderates and of course having to get the senate and white house to signoff pics mac is it the speaker himself reaching out to the Freedom Caucus to come to some type of resolve . Majority leader Steve Scalise doing that . I think we are going the house is going to come back together for the first time as i said in more than a month. We expect to see a lot of those conversations happen in person. Even to the extent these conversations happen remotely when they are out of washington certainly getting back together has a way of bringing those emotions at the forefront. I expect what we will see this week obviously time is short. I think those conversations are going to happen quickly. I think that is why we are going to be so anxious to see the Freedom Caucus the rules Committee Representative matt gaetz there are a lot of potential headaches for Speaker Mccarthy. To the extent the people are able to voice those concerns upfront i think that will be helpful in determining what the outlook here looks like. At least from a health perspective. You brought up the house but how are Senate Republicans looking at that activity or lack of activity may be some would say in the house when it comes to these efforts . It is a split screen. With the senate. The senate will be taking a procedural vote today their first package of three of these bills. As if they are proceeding more or less under regular order. That is something the senate is taking great pains to try to highlight. And they are trying to pass these appropriations measures. That is going to run up against the fact theyre going to need merged these products together to get something that will hit the president s desperate if you were to look at the senate right now you could not be as stark a contrast to the house. They are proceeding as though this is how things normally go every year. We have been talking to our audience about this idea asking the comment either on the spending issue or the impeachment issue. Could that potential inquiry complicate efforts when it comes to funding . I think that remains an open question here. I think how exactly that impeachment potential impeachment inquiry plays in terms of the remains an open question. Whether or not that actually get you some votes on the right maybe that loses you some moderates. Obviously close to 20 House Republicans that President Biden won in 2020. It is uncertain how and impeachment inquiry whether they would support such an inquiry. Certainly how that will play. So im not sure we yet know. Getting you a boat im not sure. But we are certainly going to have to see. Certainly that may be something that Speaker Mccarthy has in his hands as he is looking to rally the votes to get people behind some sort of approach that will keep the government open.
