Do it . Absolutely not. His mom would have had a fit and thrown him out of the room. Now, you tweeted out after that hes grounded. How long is he grounded for . And what will he be doing during that time . Well, if anybody needs help having their snow shovel removes this weekend, please let cal now. Hes still negotiating the length of his term. Hes asking for a president ial pardon after this weekend. So well see how he goes. What was your reaction . What were you thinking when you saw what was happening . I really was clueless. I really thought he was sneezing. I had no idea what he was doing. And then someone mentioned the word he was dabbing. I had no idea what the word even meant. So i guess the speaker and i both learned a new term. Thats right. Tell us why you decided to run for congress. It was always a lot of reasons but we had our first grandchild about two years ago was born and my wife and i had the conversation of whats next in life. And we were unfortunately convinced that we werent leaving the country better than we found it. My grandson was not going to have the same opportunities that i had growing up, a free market, a chance that no matter where youre born, where youre from, that you can make it in america. I just thought that we were drowning in regulations from the government and taxation policy and frankly our military was not as strong as i was comfortable with. National security was becoming an issue in kansas. Were in the middle of the country, and housewives in cancel told me they were fearful for national security. And in this conversation my wife looked at me and said you like to fix things, its time for you to go to washington. So here we are. You had what you call a surprise victory in the primary battle against former congressman tim huelskamp. Why did you find it surprising . I think whenever youre taking on a sixyear incumbent, a person that controls the system, controls the party and all those angles, hed been a professional politician for 12 or 14 years in the state house, so a rookie, a novice in politics, and frankly he had millions of dollars being spent before we even came out of the chute trying to help him out. So we knew we were taking on a big beast with a lot of money behind him. You with no political experience. What were you doing before you decided to run for office . Im a physician, im an obstetrician and gynecologist. What about that experience leads you to believe that what can you take from that to be a member of congress . The most important clinical skill a physician has is their ability to listen. The best physicians can listen. And if you listen to a patient long enough, theyll tell you whats wrong. But more importantly, they usually tell you how to fix it as well. So ive taken that same mindset touring my district, weve traveled 30,000 miles, been to 100 different communities, county visits, and listening and listening. And i believe the people most impacted by the problems usually have the best solutions. Ive taken all those solutions. Take health care, for instance. I think ive listened to people with their Health Care Issues from people that like the Affordable Care act, not many of them but theres a handful that did, people with preexisting conditions and know this was a hope for them. So i know how to Pay Attention as we replace the Affordable Care act i think i have a much better idea what to replace it with, whats going to work. What would you keep . What do you think should be kept from the Affordable Care act . Right. I think were very comfortable keeping kids on their family plans till age 26. And what we have to do is help people with preexisting conditions. I think we have to supply highrisk pools, which most statesv and the federal governments going to have to help fund those to keep those people with preexisting conditions, to keep their Health Care Costs down and not have a 12,000 deductible policy like they have right now with the aca. What is your district like . You said you traveled 30,000 miles its the size of south dakota people tell me. Its the largest agproducing Congressional District in the country. Were the countrys leading producer of wheat sorghum, the third leading producer of cattle. We have the Largest Dairy heard growing in the state as well. So very much ag driven, but oils also very important to us. Wind energy is a big issue. Were growing solar energy. A very diverse portfolio of energy. Theres more sunny days in kansas than florida. Its hard to believe that. And of course were known for wind. The wind energy is booming there. We are an exporter of energy and that exporting is going to grow. Those industries that youre talking about, were they supportive of your run for office . Very, very supportive. Im going to start with agriculture. Kansas farm bureau, kansas livestock association, all the other groups, corn, wheat, sorghum, all these people helped us immensely. The ethanol people. All these people helped us a lot with the ag community. Then of course wind energy very supportive as well. We had probably 90 of the organizations across the state supporting us. Health Care Association thats were behind your bid. You talked about health care and what youd like to do. On those other aspects, policy, where would you what kind of legislation are you look at . We certainly hope to get on the agriculture committee. Kansas is first and foremost an ag state and we want a voice back on the ag committee. As far as health care, i hope to influence it through a doc caucus. Speaker ryan definitely listens to the physicians. And my relationship with speaker ryan, dr. Price is a very good friend. Certainly support him as hhs secretary. Hes one of the kindest, wisest men ive ever met. So i think having his ear, listening to him, dr. Price and i have been throwing ideas off each other now for almost a year and eph question ive had dr. Price has had a great answer. Just to expand, i think first of all i want to reassure the American Public were not pushing anybody off the cliff. Were not going to pull your rug out from under you. If you like your aca policy and the 12,000 deductible, great, keep it. But we think when we let free Market Forces move ahead that well have a better, more affordable insurance policy. There are some very, very simple things we can do. Number one is transparent prices. I think if there were transparent prices that thats going to drive the cost of health care down. Expand Health Care Savings accounts. Make them look lake an i. R. A. Let anybody have access to them. Let Health Insurance be bid across state lines. I already talked a little about the highrisk pool, to help those people that need the help. Those are some real simple examples but were not pushing anybody off the cliff. Another policy area, talk about your prolife stance. Sure. So as an obstetrician i truly have delivered over 5,000 babies. Decided many, many decades ago that i would always be pro life. I was thinking of my last day in office and as i was talking to a mom and she was pregnant, maybe, oh, four or five months along, she hadnt felt the baby move yet. But we put the doppler on her, i could hear the baby moving. And there was a sister beside the mom. And when the sister talked the baby would move even more. I dont know how anyone could abort a live human being. And i just always very hard in our clinic to help pregnant women who didnt want to have an abortion, single moms, that helped the adoption process, made sure women have free Quality Health care, access to the hospital and all the social services working with catholic social services, which do just a tremendous job in my community. So very committed to it. My staff is very committed to pro life. Talk about your family. Oh, wow. My wife lena, weve been married for 33 years. Absolutely the most beautiful woman ive ever met, inside and outside. Shes given me four wonderful children. A daughter whos the mother of our grandson, the apple of my wifes eye. Three wonderful boys. So laurens the girl. Victor, matt, and cal are the three boys. Victor just finished his mba. Matt is a senior at Kansas State University at the k state beta house where i was also fortunate enough to be the president there. And young cal is a 17yearold senior at great ben high school, allstate football player, straighta student, taking calculus and chemistry and still being a leader on the field and off the field. So so so proud of all them. How lu balance life here and life back in kansas, the family . Thats a great question. The president elect certainly has a very challenging schedule for us here. He expects us to work. He expects us to start monday morning and work till friday afternoon. Just like all kansasns do. Most of us work saturdays as well. Well have to figure it out. I have a little apartment here. Very comfortable there. Ill fly back and forth as often as i can. I bet my wife will come visit me once a month here, try to get back tore cals swim meets. Ive got k state season tickets for football. So certainly plan on going back for those games. And hopefully ill have another son at k state next year and a reason to see him. Congressman marshall, we appreciate the conversation with you. My pleasure. I enjoyed it. Happy new year. Im a white male, and i am prejudiced. And the reason it is is something i wasnt taught but its kind of something that i learned. I dont like to be forced to like people. I like to be led to like people through example. What can i do to change, to be a better american . That was a remarkable moment. I didnt really realize until i kind of stepped off the set, because there were more calls after that. We just had to keep rolling. How powerful it was. There was something in his voice that touched me. You can hear it. Its so authentic as he searches for the words to Say Something to a National Audience that most of us wont admit in our homes. Im prejudiced. Sunday night on q a, heather mcgee, president of the Public Policy organization demos, was a guest on cspans washington journal in august of 2016 when gary sivatello called. She talks about that interaction and her followup with mr. Sivatello. Part of the reason for that is you have to remember this is august. We had this sort of racially charged summer with Donald Trumps campaign, with black lives matter, and the police shootings. And then the tragic events in baton rouge and dallas. It was really a time when people felt like all they were seeing on
