First the Campaign Rally with senator ted cruz in des moines, iowa, thats live at 7 00 p. M. Eastern and Carly Fiorina speaking to voters at a steakhouse in waukee, iowa, live at 8 30 p. M. Eastern. With just a few days of campaigning before next mondays Iowa Caucuses, what is the state of the race . A new republican poll out today by Quinnipiac University showing it essentially a dead heat between donald trump and senator ted cruz. Joining us from des moines is peter brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University poll. Thank you for being with us. My pleasure. Walk us through the numbers. Well, its pretty simple. From a race that started with 16 candidates, you know, in the spring, were now effectively down to two in iowa, ted cruz, the texas senator, and donald trump, the new york businessman. Mr. Trump has 31 of the vote, senator cruz has 29 of the vote. Thats well within the margin of error. So its a dead heat. In fact, this twopoint lead for mr. Trump has been static for the last three months, but again, two points is a tie essentially. And as you well know, the key question, who will show up on caucus night, so my question to you right. Who did you survey . Zwh we surveyed likely Republican Caucus goers based on intention to go and history of attending. But heres whats really going on here, is that we in the media and all the politicians in the state of iowa and all the political types who make a living out of Politics Around the country, who converge on iowa every four years are all waiting to see who shows up, and whats most interesting is four in ten voters, four in ten likely caucus goers in our survey say they might change their minds by monday night. Thats an enormous figure. Now, whether they do or not is a different question, but the fact that theres that instability makes you wonder about everything thats gone on the last several months and iowa has a history of candidates coming from nowhere to win the caucuses. Remember, we had president Rick Santorum four years ago, relatively little known candidate, organized and organized and organized and got hot at the end which is a formula for victory in iowa and he won the caucuses to everybodys surprise and not to a lot of peoples surprise, basically his Campaign Just fell apart, and he obviously weve not had a president santorum. Iowa is known for separating the weak from the chaft and thats really its function. And has often been said there are three tickets out of iowa, so lets talk about your poll and senator marco rubio far back at 13 and the other candidates in the single digits. With regard to senator rubio do you sense any momentum . Well its hard to know exactly. Tell me whether the endorsement of the Des Moines Register is a plus or minus in a Republican Caucus, because thats a serious question. Among, you know, among republicans the register isnt always that well favored. But clearly mr. Rubio, senator rubio is in third place. 13 is a lot better than anybody else is getting. Everybody else is insingle digits other than trump and cruz. Can mr. Rubio make up the almost 20 points he trails . Unlikely, but anything i guess is possible. Senator rand paul, former governor jeb bush, dr. Ben carson, governor Chris Christie all in the single digits. Any sense that these candidates will break out of the pack . Not a lot of evidence. Were talking with peter brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University poll. When you look at numbers what are the issues that are driving them . Well in general, senator cruz is doing best among people who describe themselves as being very conservative or being Tea Party Sympathizers or members, et cetera. Mr. Trumps ideological support is a little bit more diverse than mr. Cruzs. Hes pulling from all, you know, not just hard conservatives but moderate conservatives and moderates, but that assumes that this year, which has been a very unusual year, that voters will vote based on ideology, and its not clear theres real evidence that thats the case. That there are other things that may be at work. Clearly mr. Trump has attracted a lot of people who are by their own description pretty unhappy with the status quo. And the question is, does that caught cross ideological lines . There seems to be some evidence that it does. I mean, to some degree the unhappiness with the political establishment in the Republican Caucuses, which have mostly benefited mr. Trump, is not hugely dissimilar to what youre seeing on the democratic side with a dissatisfaction with the status quo. The status quo is represented by secretary clinton, and the outsider, the new, fresh face is 73yearold bernie sanders. A breakdown of all of these polling numbers Available Online atty nipiac. Edu. Peter brown, the assistant director, joining from us des moines. Thank you for your time. We appreciate it. My pleasure. Have a good day. Nancy and i are pained to the core by the tragedy of the shuttle challenger. We know we share this pain with all of the people of our country. This is truly a national loss. Sunday morning at 10 00 on road to the white house rewind a look at the Iowa Caucuses, including howard deans 2004 speech featuring the dean scream. And the conference on the history of the Iowa Caucuses whose speakers include retired Democratic Political adviser tim kraft, who was the Iowa Caucuses Campaign Manager for jimmy carter in 1976, also two panels with former Campaign Managers and political reporters, and at 8 00, journalist brawl brandeis on his book under this roof, the white house and the presidency 21 president s, 21 rooms, 21 inside stories. He explains how president s from George Washington to barack obama have left their imprint on the executive mansion. Heres what i find interesting about the theater. If you look at record of what the president s have watched over the years, tastes are obviously very eclectic and everything and they reflect the tastes of the president s, they reflect the times in which they lived and everything but theres one movie, this is a quiz section of our evening here, theres one movie that really resonated with more president s than any other one. Can you guess what that one movie might be . For the complete American History tv weekend schedule go to cspan. Org. Former Virginia Governor and republican president ial candidate jim gilmore talked to voters at the the first in the nation town hall hosted by the New Hampshire Republican Party in nashua, New Hampshire. He focused on his military service and his plan to expand u. S. Military capabilities if he was president. Afterwards he took questions from the audience. This is about an hour. Thank you, jennifer, good, thank you very much. I am. This is impressive. I think maybe i should be doing a fashion show out here. This is very interesting. I am so glad to be here back once again at the first in the nation here in New Hampshire. You know, its funny, im from virginia, so i had to come north to New Hampshire to avoid all the ice and the cold and the snow. All right, were on a timer so im going to get started here because i have a lot of things that i want to say to you and maybe if we are fortunate here, i can save a few minutes for questions and answers, which i very much look forward to. Im pleased to once again be back here. Ive had a chance to be here very often. This i think is my 19th trip to New Hampshire. Lot of the candidates, of course, have chosen their own strategies and some are starting in some other states, but i have selected and chosen to start here at the first of the nation in New Hampshire at this first in the nation primary. This is what ive chosen to do and im very proud of it. 19 times here, just the day before yesterday i was up in north conway and yesterday i was down in portsmouth but its just been wonderful. The people of New Hampshire take this very seriously ive noticed. Yes, they do, and ive noticed this, when you go and shake hands with people in lunch counters and so on like that, when youre interrupting their lunch nobody is disturbed about it. Theyre all happy to see you because they sort of expect to see the candidates do that, but im pleased to be here. In the sam cataldo of the state senate in New Hampshire is the chairman of my committee. Hes hiding in the back room but hell be out later, a sui assur you. Many of you know me. Ive met most of you probably one time or another in the past year and a half. Let me run through this quick. Im a regular guy, a regular normal person, my father was a meat cutter for has years at safeway, my mother was a church secretary, she finished her careers for the first methodist bishop i went to the Public Schools no silver spoon and after i finished the Public Schools i was admitted to university of virginia and at uva thats where i got my lifelong love for Foreign Policy and National Security and started even back then beginning to study those issues, took a degree in russian area studies. Then after that, i joined the United States army and became Army Intelligence agent. I was trained as a soldier, ft. Camp bell, kentucky, trained as an intelligence agent in arizona, trained in the german language at the Defense Institute in monterey, california and attached to a Naval Intelligence unit in west germany. Im proud to be a United States army veteran. Im proud of that. [ applause ] and im the only veteran in the race. The time comes to talk to veterans inment has ham and across the United States of america theyll want to know if somebody on the republican ticket has had the experience of serving in uniform. Well technically i wasnt overseas leading in uniform but leading up to it it was and serving overseas on behalf of our country. I went back to Uva Law School and eventually elected to be chief prosecutor, prosecuted cases, large staff also, then i was elected to be the attorney general of virginia, then the governor of virginia. The congress came to me and asked me to chair several major federal commissions. The one i think im most proud of was when i chaired the National Commission on terrorism and weapons of mass destruction on behalf of the United States. We issued our reports and in 1999 we issued our first report and told the congress and the administration that a chance of an attack in the homeland of the United States was quite certain and that we had to do something to prepare and get a strategy. It was ignored of course and then in 2000 we issued a second reported and said you dont understand what we told you last year, an attack on this country is inevitable. And we have to be prepared and at the end of the third year, what happened . The 9 11 attack. Ill tell you a quick story and i dont want to burn up all my time. I was the governor of virginia during that 9 11 attack and the chairman of the National Commission. I was in the Governors Mansion when we turned on the television, we saw the First World Trade Center on fire. Roxanne and i watched the Second Attack and at that point i knew i was a war grn and had to do something there. I picked up the phone, activated the Emergency Operations center. I notified the state police if there was evidence of gun play that the central headquarters had to be notified immediately to take action. I activated the National Guard and got to my office to found out the second state attacked that day was virginia because the pentagon isnt in washington, d. C. The pentagon is in virginia. And i did what was necessary. I spoke to the people of virginia by broadcast that night. I visited the wounded in the hospital. I went to the pentagon and saw it on fire, supported the fire and police and rescue as they did what was necessary. This is the real Life Experience that i have had in National Security and Foreign Policy that i believe sets me apart from the other potential candidates, that you will choose to offer to run for president of the United States to the american people. Well, we now are in a dreadful situation in this country. We have seen the failed owe pa ma policies over the last eight years. Weve seen the continuation of the added taxation and the slow economy thats robbing our young people of their opportunities for the future and endangering our workers across the country. We have seen now the advent of a Democratic Party which seems determined to offer a socialist candidate for president of the United States. Now, there was a time when you wouldnt Say Something like that, but its okay. You ask bernie sanders. Hell tell you that its a socialist party right now, that theyre offering. Hillary clinton, of course, is the same, cut from the same cloth, exactly from the same cloth. Its just a little more deceptive, i think, in terms of what her presentation is than bernie sanders, who gives it to you straight risky. This is a slow economy and it has to change, and the international dangers to this country are more significant than weve seen in my lifetime. When i was a soldier stationed on behalf of nato in europe there was this russianamerican balance we were trying to maintain to prevent war. Today the United States is challenged from russia, from china, from north korea, from iran, and then Something Else of course again as well and that is the international guerrilla war were all facing today. These are very serious challenges we have. The iranian deal is supposed to keep us at peace for a period of time, but yet our sailors are assaulted, taken prisoner, put on their knees, held as hostage briefly, put into videos. Dont you think that that image is meant to be real across the iranian world, the islamic world as they humble the great you state of america . And i say to you its time for a change. Its time for the republicans to offer someone who actually will stand up and provide real president ial experience and leadership on behalf of the United States of america. [ applause ] he so leaning, what kind of country have we become . You know, we in 1776 set down the proposition that citizens were actually individuals with rights, the declaration of independence set this down. We hold these truths to be selfevident all men are created equal, theyre endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights among which are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and governments are constituted to secure those rights, not to grant them. But over the 20th century as we saw world war i and the great depression, weve seen now the country become a country of regulations. Can we deny that our rights could be impeded on right now by the Supreme Court . By the congress . Our gun rights . Our individual rights of speech . The world has changed, and i say to you that its time that we republicans lead this country into a real society of liberty in the United States. Were seeing the country become a society of people who need to be managed. We have seep regulations bind us up into an iron cage. Weve seen people become recipients of information, not really participants so much in as like we are here in this room, and mass media gives information and controls information on behalf of the people of the United States, and they, by their broadcast, are doing financial donations and contributions to their selected candidates without any type of restriction on them whatsoever, and this will change in a gilmore presidency, i promise you this. I am running to build a country that once again is based upon our individual liberties and rights, but first we got to have a country that is protected. The first things first. We have to protect this country. We have to recognize the dangers that were seeing from russia, china, north korea and iran. We have to recognize these dangers of the international guerrilla war, and i have the background to address these issues and ill tell you what i will do. As president of the United States, the sequester will come off the defense budget. Were going to rebuild the army. Were going to build new surface ships for the United States navy. Were going to give the combat brigade back to the United States marine corps and the people around this country will know that the United States is serious about protecting our people and our National Interests in this world today. [ applause ] and in terrorism we will support our special operations people. We will rebuild our military and we will recognize the exceptionalism of america. We will do whats necessary to fight this international guerrilla war, but i will tell you something maybe a little different. The war is in the minds of people and its important for an american president to stand up for the values of western civilization, and to say that people who would put someone in a cage and burn them, behead people, enslave women, that these are crimes against humanity and we have to say so forthrightly and strongly. [ applause ] and one more thing. If we expect our military people to protect us in this time of crisis, then we have to remember our veterans. We have to remember veterans in the United States of america. Did i mention i was the only veteran in this race . Did i mention that . I forgot. Did i . Our veterans, i tell you now, a gilmore presidency is committed to their having the same standard of medical care that all of us have in the community. We will recognize post Traumatic Stress disorder as a real thing and the danger of suicide that it creates. We will recognize things like agent orange and oil, fire, burnings that theyve seen on the battlefield. We will have a reasonable reform of the appeals process, so that veterans who are turned down can have a chance to have their say in this bureaucratic system and not be taken advantage of. We will give genuine respect to our veterans and they will know when they come off of active duty that they will be treated with respect inside the United States of america. I say to you ladies and gentlemen, this is a time of great danger, and it is no time to put an amateur in the white house in this time of danger. Second of all, we have to begin to develop once again the Financial Freedom of the people here at home. We have to have a country here at home worth protecting in the first place and that means we have to rebuild our economy. We cant have a lost generation of young people. We dont have a chance to get their careers started. We have to rid ourselves of all these terrible regulations, and i will tell you what i will do as president of the United States. We will repeal the bad laws which are causing such slow growth, the increased taxes that weve seen on jobs and investment. We will reduce these terrible regulations that we see from the Environmental Protection agency. Nobody in this room wants dirty air or dirty water. The epa has taken it upon itself once again through regulation to control the lives of the american people. This has to stop. It has to change, and it will stop. And education. Education. Way of either controlling people or enabling people. I tell you now, ladies and gentlemen, i disagree with disa of the other republican candidates. I tell you now there is no place for a federal common core edgele indication in the United States of america. [ applause ] we will implement the growth code, reform the tax system to give 15, 25 of tax exemptions. We will do whats necessary at this point to take the commercial activities and chargele them 15 and eliminate once and for all the death tax on america. [ applause ] if we do these things, the economy will grow at an appropriate rate. We have deliberately hobbled the american economy. Its time for somebody running for president to say what he will do to correct the situation. I am that candidate. One more thing. Its time to remember the empowerment of the individual. You know, i am a National Board member of the National Rifle association. [ applause ] thank you. I promise you this. I will stand for the individual rights of americans to keep and bear arms under the second amendment. If gun control legislation comes to my desk as president , i will veto it faster than it takes Hillary Clinton to eliminate her emails. Now, let me say as i close, this final thing to you. We are living in a Society Today where the media are controlling our political situation. They are controlling this and the Republican National committee in one of the great crimes of the time outsourced the nomination to the media people, to fox and cnn and to mea msnbc and the networks. Thats what they did. They bequeathed the ability to those people to say who will be in the debates. You havent seen me in the debates. Freezing out a candidate means he doesnt get the exposure, the poll numbers, the exposure, donations and they know this. They know this. This is a distortion of the political system. Look at one of our candidates the other day taunted people. Actually taunted people and said i dont have to spend money. Im getting free broadcast time. Thats the reality of what we are see ing in america today. I tell you now, it ises wrong for the mass media to donate to any candidate and give them free money without regulations when we americans are limited in what we can do. That has to change. [ applause ]
