Conference. Next we present the results of the strong poll. Theres only one pollster that always gets things right. Its jim mclaughen. Dont worry. We have a very special relationship between cpac and the Washington Times. I hope you all read the Washington Times and gets all their notifications. I know when news breaks on the Washington Times, i usually hear about it from a lot more people across the country because i think conservatives know its the right place to find out whats going on and i want to thank them for sponsoring this poll. I want to thank jim for making sure that this poll is beyond reproach and i think youre going to love hearing whats inside it. So i want to say once again thank you to the Washington Times for always playing a special role at cpac. Thank you to larry besley. Thank you, matt. Since 1973 cpac has stoked the flames of conservativism and the Washington Times have been covering it. Were proud of covering real news for real americans reporting on washington for people outside of washington and were proud to furnishi a forum for a vigorous debate that helps fuel the conservative movement. Three years ago david keen joined the times as our opinion editor. He brought an intellectual and thoughtful tone to the commentary that runs online and in our paper, as well as a host of columnists more than i can name who every day give readers ideas to consider and arguments to make. Id like to take a minute to thank david for all the work hes done over the last couple of years on behalf of the Washington Times. As he prepares to step down, david is leaving us, but hes not getting away. Hes going to continue to write a column and im going to be regularly calling on his counsel. Now i know that what were here for is the poll and thats what youre waiting for, but i want to take a minute to introduce a person weve chosen to carry on davids work and thats charlie hurt who is come right off the hunting fields to join us. I do want to Say Something about charlie. Give us a spin. Charlies been killing things in the finest conservative tradition. I thought i was going to have time to change. At least theyre not leather chaps. So stop and think about it. Thank you, chris, first of all and its a tremendous honor to pick up where david has left off. I hope i dont disappoint. Think about it. Right now as we sit here, the federal government has never been more powerful. It has never been more involved in more intricate aspects of every aspect of our personal lives. It has never gobbled up more of your money that you make than it does today and it is at a time when the house of representatives, which is supposed to be the body, the branch of the government that is supposed to be the closest to us, because both parties, they have surrendered more power than ever in our history. If theres ever a time when we need we dont need fake news. We need we need real news. We need people covering things that actually matter to people and things that are actually important to the republic. For 35 years, the Washington Times has been that voice and has done that and i look forward to another 35 years at the Washington Times doing thatened a i look forward to being part of that. Go vote and have your voice heard again and have a great afternoon. All right, charlie. Thank you. Jim, take it away. Thank you. What a great panel and theres no way i can follow these guys pants. Last year i wore sneakers. Its saturday. You guys are dressed way better than me. Last year i wore sneakers. I got killed on social media. Next year the sneakers are coming back. Its an honor. Ive got to tell you every year ive been coming to cpac way before i had gray hair. Matt and i used to have dark black hair. This is i think the first cpac was 34 years ago. When i come here, i get energized. I love all the young people here and its fantastic. I love doing this poll because this poll isnt about me. Its not about polls. Its all about you folks. Its about everything that matters created here and its about your opinions and were just going to give you some of the highlights. Dont worry, another day or two well have everything that was in that poll, it will be all released like they always do, but heres some of the highlights. I think youre going to find am so of these results really interesting. First things first. Would you say things in the United States are going in the right direction or have they gotten off on the wrong track . Its 44 right direction, 47 wrong track. Twothirds of americans were telling us things were off on the wrong track on election day. With republicans it was 80 . This is saying things are getting better, but theres still work to be done and it comes out in your responses here. Do you approve or disapprove of du donald trump. 86 approve. Only 12 are telling us they disapprove. In many ways donald trump is the conservative movement right now. The conservative movement is donald trump. Is President Trump realigning the conservative movement . 83 agree with that. Only 15 tell us they disagree. What youre going to see, as popular as President Trump right now, his agenda is more popular. Its rare where we get 86 approval job rating. One out of two are saying Economic Issues are the most important issues and 29 are National Security and 13 are saying social and cultural and 11 saying honesty. Its not that those honesty issues arent important, they have a lot of confidence in the Trump Administration to do what . Drain the swamp. You got it. You got it. Drain the swamp. When we asked as a candidate for president , President Trump made several promises and we asked what they would like most like to see President Trump to. 33 said reforming the tax code. 28 said repealing obamacare, repealing and replacing obamacare. He had 17 saying building the wall. 12 temporarily halting immigration from terrorist countries. And 8 said infrastructure. So you see more than six out of ten are telling us they want the tax code reformed and they want obamacare reformed. By the way, that goes back to the most important issue because conservatives get it. You lower taxes, cut regulations, we make our health care more affordable, that creates jobs and gets the economy going again. Which of the following comes close to your own personal opinion . Republicans in congress should be doing more to support President Trump . Twothirds saying that. His agenda is extremely popular right now. They want the republicans in congress to do more to support him. Do you approve or disapprove of President Trumps appointment of neil gorsuch. 94 approve. 83 strongly approve. You dont see 94 numbers. I mean, folks are looking at this and theyre saying its a home run. Just listening to you, itobviouy its a home run. Would you be more or less likely to vote for a candidate of the United States senate who opposed the nomination of neil gorsuch . It would make our folks very upset. 86 said they would be less likely. What i thought was more interesting, 75 want him to do the filibuster and do the nuclear option. Jim, dont you think that also applies to these republican senators who arent supporting our cabinet nominees as well . Thats a great point. When you see a president with 86 job approval, you dont see those kind of numbers, and that his issue agenda is more supportive, they love his cabinet picks and were seeing it and they want those senators to support his cabinet picks. What the president s proposing cutting off funds to sanctuary cities, 91 favor it. [ applause ] theres a lot of intensity there. 79 strongly support that. Sometimes i think theyre beyond help. On the president s executive order, temporarily halting citizens from seven middle east countries entering the United States, 81 approve and 18 disapprove. Its interesting because i think again you see the out of touch nature of the elites and the establishment versus the grassroots. Cpac is the ultimate when it comes to grassroots. Last but not least, maybe my favorite question, do you approve or disapprove of President Trump using twitter to communicate . 70 approve, 28 disapprove. Why . Thats how he gets around the dishonest media, everybody but the Washington Times. Thank you. Its been a pleasure. We had a ton of respondents to the survey and thank you for your participation. Keep up the fight. That was great. Thanks. So when you see charlie hurt on television, which i know you see him all the time, and you notice they never show pants on television so he gets away with it more im usually not wearing pants on television. Tmi. When you think about what the many people in the press are driving, which is this idea that you have the conservative movement at a moment of conflict and all this division and we dont know what we think and were so distrustful of the white house, get them jims poll. Get them the cpac poll because what this shows is this, donald trump is actually doing the things that the conservative wants to get done. [ applause ] we all felt very respected by the fact that he came to cpac in his very first year in office in the first 30 days and these results will be on all of our web sites immediately so lets get it out to everybody whos driving that message because its not right. Thank you all very much. [ applause ] this part of the cpac gathering includes former u. S. Embassador to the u. N. , john bolton. Thank you very much. Thank you. Its great to be here. As you may have noticed, im not secretary of state or the National Security adviser
