Committee took senate john mccains advice from the other night and theyre going to hold a hearing in september. What change snd. This announcement took a lot of people by surprise. It was announced at a Health Committee hearing today which was supposed to be just about nominations. And i think now that the repeal the latest iteration of repeal and replace has failed in the senate, i think this drove republicans to realize that in the interim where theyre not going to get 50 votes on a repeal and replace, they should try to stabilize the existing Insurance Markets under obamacare. I want to show the tweets that Lamar Alexander put out ie mule train yously as the announcement was made before the Health Committee. Lets take a look at those. The senator, the chairman of the committee saying the Health Committee will hold hearings september 4th on Actions Congress should take to stabilize and strengthen the individual Insurance Market so that americans will be able to buy insurance at affordable prices in the year 2018. He tweeted well hear from patients, Health Care Agents saying that Committee Staff will work with all Committee Member to prefair for these hearing and discussions. From Lamar Alexander, the reason for these hearings unless Congress Acts by september 27th, millions of americans may find themselves with zero options for buying health nrnls in exchanges in 2018. There are a number of issues with the American Health care system. But if your house is on fire, you want to put out the fire. And the fire in this case is the individual Insurance Market. Andrew desideridesiderio, it soe the senator was working that up for a while and itching to get that hearing underway. Thats right, he was for sure. He issued a stark warning to President Trump. He said he actually encouraged President Trump to continue allocating what are called the cost sharing reduction payments under obamacare which would give funds to insurers and poor americans under obama care. That is in and of itself a market stabilization measure. The president has threatened to cut out those funds. Insurance bailouts < essentiall is what they call them. But senator alexander, many republicans, even senator john tlun said that the president should at least in the short term continue these payments while those here in Congress Work on a solution to stabilize the markets. The existing markets. And senator patty murray tweeting a short while, with trump care rejected in the senate, she tweets, im glad to get to work on health care with senator alexander. Weve tackled tough issues together before. What about Senate Leadership . We saw some video a moment ago of Mitch Mcconnell. What have we heard from Mitch Mcconnell and from senator schumer about this effort . Mitch mcconnell has been mum on thissest. But senator john thune, he was definitely encouraging the president to continue allocated the csr payments under obamac e obamacare. Senator schumer has been saying the same thing. After the failed vote in the early hours of friday morning, senator schumer was saying republicans and democrats needs to come together right now. This is what the democrats have wanted all along, a, the repeal and replace effort to fail and for b, the republicans to come away from that and come to the table and start negotiating with them. For democrats, as long as repeal and replace was on the table, they were not coming to the table. This was crucial to the democrats, making sure that the structures in place under obamacare are staying put at least for the time being. Lets have some clarity on the week of september 4th. Thats when we hear the effort is going to start. Is it a hearing, a single hearing or a set of hearings, because it sounds like senator alexander wants to get a lot done. Yeah, senator alexander said pleural, hearings and he said bipartisan hearings. And he said we want to hear from all of those who want to be involved, that includes state insurance chiefs, doctors, patients, Health Insurance experts, you know, governors who obviously have a huge say in this. Many governors were successful in swaying their home state senators away or toward these latest iterations of repeal and replace. Seems to me theyre going to have a lot of hearings. Starting september 4th. Theyre looking to strike a deal by mid september. And as you mentioned in the opening, they need to get something done by september 27th or a lot of americans who get the subsidies wont have many options in 2018. I dont want you to speculate on this, and the house is out for the august recess obviously, but is there a parallel effort perhaps going on in the u. S. House . None that we know of. The Problem Solvers Caucus as its known in the house, a group of moderate democrats and republicans, about 40 of them, i believe, came out with a proposal earlier this week. But its not seeming to at least gain much steam. And with the house out right now, i cant tell you how theyre feeling about it. But i imagine well see a lot of people from the House Freedom caucus, the hard line conservative group inside weigh in on that pretty soon. We look forward to hearing from you the week of september 4th as the hearings get under way. Andrew desiderio from the daily beast. Thanks so much. Thanks, bill.
