Located in surrey, virginia, Bacons Castle was occupied Nathaniel Bacon supporters during the 1676 political uprising. Originally called arthur allens brickhouse, we learn about the structure and virginians who called it home. Jennifer i am jennifer hurstwender, the director of the museum. Today we are Bacons Castle. Bacons castle is on the National Register of historic sites. We are the oldest brick dwelling in north america. It is a very rare architectural style. Its called high jacobean architecture and there are only three examples of this in the entire western hemisphere. The other two are in barbados. This is the only one in the united states. This room would have been directly above where visitors would have entered into Bacons Castle in 1665, until the 1854 addition was built and the entrance was moved. It is from this room you can really get a fantastic view of why we specifically refer to this house as being in the style of architecture, and that would be if you look out the window you can see the flemish gables and the triple stack chimney on either side of the house. They are on a diagonal, and there are Three Chimneys on each side of the house and on the opposite side we have a chimney on the garrett, on the second floor and a kitchen fireplace. This is where we have the chance to get up close and personal with the architectural style. 2015 is the we are very excited that we are able to save preservation efforts in order to keep it around for another 300 and 50 years.
