Many notable Senate Investigations held in the historic caucus room, from the 1912 titanic inquiry, to the causes of the 1929 stock market crash and subsequent financial reforms. I am donald ritchie, the senate historian. We are in the caucus room. Before cspan started covering the senate in 1986, this was the most famous room in the capitol and complex because this is where the major hearings had been televised going back. Testified in this room and that got a huge amount a very private banker. No one had ever gone into the morgan bank at that point. It was here, in may of 1933, the beginning of may, that morgan is testifying. Happenedbailey circus to be in washington and a circus promoter brought along a little person who identified himself as a circus midget. During a break, the senators withdrew to check something over. Morgan was sitting at the witness stand. The circus promoter dropped the midget into his lap and he thought it was a little girl at first. He said, i have a granddaughter who is bigger than you. She said, yes, but i am older. He realized it was not a little girl and he quickly dropped her out of his lap. It. Yone had a picture of the committee came back and they asked the press not to print the picture. Of course, it was on the front page of pretty much every newspaper the next day. There was a symbolic picture of these bankers being humbled to what was going on in congress.
