Shipbuilders of essex is a 1947 film documenting the design and construction of the st. Rosalie, a 65foot wooden fishing trawler. Following the progress from plans on paper to the launching ceremony, the handmade methods depicted in the film had changed little since the 19th century when essex, massachusetts, was a leading supplier of wooden sailing vessels for Atlantic Fishing communities. Exactly the right angle has to be drawn for every rib if the ship is to be seaworthy. Old will knows that. He picked the lumber for the ship. And the grain, that quality of every piece of wood, estimated for its particular use before one piece is cut. The heel is the backbone of the vessel. From here on, youre building up. You see a ship come to life. The ribs, the hull, come into place. When you see the ribs line up, you can figure how important it is to have accurate design. Then you can see the weeks and weeks of work. The vessel takes shape. Now you can tell how she looks. Maybe its because every man in the shipyard takes part in so much that the men have never wandered down the road to the big industrious cities. In the factories, theyre building too, i guess, but i suspect no factory working can sense the satisfaction that essex Ship Builders feel. Of course, the work at the factories has to be dope, done, and the folks in essex and all over the united states, for that matter, enjoy the things made. But the men in essex choose to live differently. Somehow, they dont figure modern speed is so important. Theyre received serving a need to us fishermen, who want wooden ships, and that means work by hand. [singing] youre watching American History tv. All weekend every weekend on cspan 3.
