Host we are joined by Rebecca Rainey, a b business reporter, a Labor Department reporter for Bloomberg Law and Rebecca Rainey thank you for joining us this morning. Guest thank you soin much for having me. Host we have the jobs numbers on friday with 315,000 jobs added in august, the unemployment percentage, 3. 7 . What is overall the state of the labor market, the job market in the economy especially as we head into an election season here in just over nine weeks . Guest so looking at the top line number we did see unemployment pick up just slightly in august. This may be i a good thing. The reason being is we added more workers to the labor force, more people came off the sidelines interested in participating come searching, actively searching for a job which overall is a good thing. When it comes to the state of the labor force, i think workers have seen considerable gains since the beginning of the pandemic. Keepingg in mind the absolute devastation a lot of people dealt with having absolutely no job and being laid off while in some industries where that work would never come back. I think because of the health and safety risks workers had to navigate during the pandemic and employers have had to offer higher wages. Workers have discovered newfound in that it we seen a huge burst of Workers Organizing especially among lower wage workers who have been set up by the stagnant pay they have seen over the years prior to this pandemic and also just the lack of benefits. Again i cant say this enough how much coronavirus really peeled back the risk that workers faced when it comes to their health. Host do you think that newfound leverage you talk about is as strong with whitecollar workers as it is with bluecollar workers . Guest its interesting. Prior to the pandemic i i hada theory we were seeing a burst of organizing among whitecollar workers simply because they have the financial ability to better take risks at work. As in if youre trying to unionize your workplace and you get fired or retaliated against for doing that, i whitecollar worker who may have a retirement account or more savings has a little bit more Economic Agency to do so. However again, the pandemic and all of these risks that were revealed made that calculus a little different for some lower wage workers who were realizing they were not seeing a lot of risk on the job. Weve seen dozens of r starbucks workers seeking unionization. Theres been a Successful Union drive in new york by the amazon labor union. That was a worker started union. We are not talking about these legacy powerful unions that we seen for a while. I was completely worker led. They didnt have typically the money or the attorneys or the lawyers are the power that a wellestablished union would have. That is a huge bellwether for what could,. Host is a Labor Department showing or is this in other data, are the effects of the aid provided by the pandemic relief aid both during the Trump Administration and the Biden Administration, is that still being fed felt i should say, in the f labor force . Guest i would say largely a lot of the effects have dwindled out. That money weather was used for savings or for rent, its been several months since workers have seen those cash infusions. I would say its safe at this point that is no longer propping up the economy in the way that we saw. The Unemployment Benefits the extra stimulus money did keep people out of poverty for a little while at least during the pandemic into until the ecd in the. Host you mentioned the starbucks workers and some amazon workers gaining a union victory. Do you think those benefits, those games, those victories happen because thess Biden Administration is obviously more poor union more prounion . Guest unions were so excited with President Joe Biden just a dream the word union in nearly every policy proposal he brings up. As far as a journalist i was skeptical. Okay, this person is saying a word. What we are starting to not only this growth in people seeking Union Representation of the bipolarity of unions across the board is a highest its been since the 50s. Right before this Labor Day Weekend gallup put out a very interesting poll showing this growth over the past year. So during, at the end of august they found 71 of americans were prounion. That is up from 64 before the pandemic. That seems to be a large majority of people who say unions may be a good thing for workers. Host Rebecca Rainey is bloomberg lost Senior Department reporter.
