There is a special election today in georgia, special Congressional Election to fill the seat vacated by tom price when he was appointed as health and Human Services secretary joined by greg , Greg Bluestein who is political reporter for the Atlanta Journal , Greg Bluestein, tell us about this election. This is a field where there all are a lot of republicans running and one democrat. Theres 18 candidates, five democrats in the race but one whose rallied the support of both the democratic party, thats jon ossoff. He just transformed this race that a few months ago was thought to be weeping all republican affair where a lot of people, all republican runoffs and the topic will be trump. We were right about it being trump, we were wrong about it being at all republican affair. Jon ossoff has raised 18 million, policy groups and he is seen as an early referendum on trumps popularity. We expect 8 million coming for mister ossoff and where is the money coming from for the republican candidates . The bronze, the tremendous bulk of the money is coming from outside georgia. One, only one in 20 of jon ossoffs 2000 donors live in georgia in the actual Congressional District and the same thing with the outside spending from National Washington groups, from washington political groups. Very little super pack spending is coming from georgia itself so this is definitely an example of a nationalized race and you could see a lot more like it in 2018 the Congressional District has been held by republicans in 1979, where is it and whats it like this and mark. The district right now, we are the district spans from east Dekalb County and the suburbs always to north Dekalb County and the eastern suburbs. Its very affluent, highly educated and also a very red district but its establishment friendly. This is a district that john mccain and mitt romney won overwhelmingly in 2008 and 2012 but that donald trump one by a point and a half so it speaks volumes about the districts skepticism for donald trump. This is a race that as i understand it, the winner of today, somebody has to get 50 votes today or this is going to a special election, when would that be . Guest all 18 candidates regardless of party, no one gets over 50 percent of the vote we are headed to a june 20 runoff. Its looking like ossoff has guaranteed a spot in that runoff but he is trying to win it outright, that my might be his best chance for a victory and hes raised more than 6 million, 8 million at this point into the race to do that. Voters who have have very rarely voted in any sort of primaryor special election have reported giving one, two, three , four flyers on his campaign and democratic groups. They are trying to change the metrics with this district. Host the rest of georgia is congressional delegation, whats the makeup . Is it both republicans . Guest its overwhelmingly republican delegation. There are four democrats on the delegation but this is a, its a very red state. Trump still wanted by five points despite losing most of core and metro or atlanta which is another big shocker, he lost Dekalb County and gwinnett county, to suburban strongholds, republican strongholds in the republican camp since jimmy carters era. He lost both of those in november so this is still a red state but Metro Atlanta is starting to turn a little bit more purple. The president weighing in with tweets yesterday and this morning reading today that democrat jon ossoff would be a disaster in congress. A very weak on crime and illegal immigration, bad for jobs and want higher taxes. Whats sort of the thing on President Trump early in his presidency there and in that district and in the atlanta suburb region . Trump is weeding deeply into this race. He sent five tweets over the past three days about this race and he recorded a robo call attacking jon ossoff. This is seen as a defeat for the democrats, for the republicans here would be seen as an embarrassing rip rebuke to Donald Trumps presidency. I dont think theres any two ways about that because ossoff has named his campaign a make trump furious campaign. He has vowed left and right that he would stand up to donald trump. Republicans in the field, 11 of them have struggled with the trump inspector. Some of them out to be a trump loyalist, they say they will be trumps most ardent allies in congress and others they dont mention his name very much. They say they would be an independent check on trump in congress and that appealsto a segment of the republican electorate here who voted from trump but did so holding their nose. Host Greg Bluestein is a reporter for the atlanta constitution, you can read more and follow his reporting probably today on twitter. Thanks for the update. Guest thanks for having me. A group of students aged 9 to 19 is suing President Trump over the us governments Climate Change policy which they claim puts their future in jeopardy.
